Connection betw. Sound Pref/VoiceOver Level/Floating Audio Meter

In working with the Voice Over tool, and trying to get my levels right, a few questions came up:
1. Do the settings in Apple Pref > Sound > Input need to be checked/verified each time a recording is made? (They seem to be reverting to some default setting on my system between recordings.)
2. How do the "Input volume" and "Input level" in Apple Pref > Sound > Input affect the "Level" in the "Input" section of the Voice Over Tool, and FCE's general "Floating Audio Meter"?
3. What's the relationship between the "Level" meter bar in the Voice Over Tool Bench and FCE's general Floating Audo Meter?
4. In the Voice Over Tool under "Headphones": How does headphone volume/db affect overall levels/mix?
*Thanks for helping me get a consolidated view on how these elements interact.*

Well...
if you make sure scrubbing is on, that would help.
You can also turn on the waveforms in the timeline tracks.
That should help too.

  • AHH!  FLOATING AUDIO METER FAILS TO REGISTER EACH FRAME'S LEVEL!

I have a problem regarding the floating audio meter - ie, the small 2 track meter that usually sits next to the tools strip in the standard window setup. For some reason, when I scroll along clips in my timeline (using the left/right arrow keys) it doesnt show the levels of each individual frame, nor does it produce the sound that should be heard from that specific frame. This is a huge problem for me, as I am trying hard to sync up clips to music, and I am now stuck with just guessing where I should cut it based on intuition. Also, along with the floating audio meter, the actual audio mixer doesn't register the levels either when trying to move frame by frame. I must make it clear that when in preview(play) mode, the audio does register and can be seen moving along with the sounds produced, but when i press space(stop) it(the level of audio) simply stays put, and does NOT change from the time that I last stopped playing the sequence.
If I am being to confusing, I am trying to be able to (while moving frame by frame with the arrow keys) see and literally hear each individual frame in efforts to make synchronizing a **** of a lot easier and more practical.
This has never been a problem before, and has just recently burdened me. I have tried restarting the settings/preferences, starting new projects, looking in the manual, etc. No dice. Can someone please help me restore FCP's ability to hear each frames audible material, as well as witness each specific decibel level of the individual frames as I arrow across?

A small update to this issue....
I have been trawling the forums to find an answer but to no avail...
And... I've tried exporting and bouncing individual stems and the full session, either by muting all bar the stem or soloing the stem.....and still nothing.
Same problems.....everything is audible in audition but nothing plays on playback.
Since the 'prelisten' channel strip is Solo safe this would indicate that you have a track or channel strip soloed somewhere else, out of sight. Are the Mute buttons on your channel strips blinking?
To view all objects in your mixer, click the button. You may have to scroll sideways to check the whole mixer.

  • Why do some have to click twice on floating audio control to start sound?

We are finding that for some users, a floating audio control within acrobat reader has to be clicked twice to start the audio.  When the audio button "Play Audio" is clicked, the floating audio control is opened and the play button is activated but the sound does not start on some machines.  The pause button is available to click, indicating the play button has been activated.  No sound occurs, and the progress indicator does not move.  However, if I click the pause button and THEN click the play button, the sound starts and the progress indicator begins to move.  So far Adobe support has not been able to answer this issue.  Has anyone else seen this happen?  Problem seems to happen on about half the computers we have tried it on.  Thanks in advance for any ideas and/or solutions.

Same thing - have to click twice even though default settings.

  • No Audio Pref in /Library/Preferences/Audio

    Hello
I have no sound in iChat and can not change the settings in Sound Pref Pane. I read the tips about deleting the files in /Library/Preferences/Audio
My problem is, they don't get built anew.
    Any idea?

I have the same issue, my system sounds don't work!
Solutions that I see in the threads and don't work:
    1. Check the System Preferences > Sounds > Play user interface sound effects;
    2. My volume in "Alert Volume" was in the high level possible;
    3. I Delete the /Library/Preferences audio relative files and restart SEVERAL TIMES;
    4. PRAM 4 times and nothing;
    5. Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner and nothing.
    6. Seems that nothing work
The another sounds, like youtube playback and iTunes, QuickTime are all work normally, but the system sounds not.
I try everything! I even reinstall the 10.6.4 update combo with no sucess, please someone help me! All the system sounds: empty trash, move documents, remove application from dock... all that system sounds don't work, only the volume up volume down thing.

  • Newly installed leopard-HOW TO GET LINE IN OPTION IN SOUND PREFS?

    Hi,
Have just installed leopard and garageband 09 onto my PwrBk15" 1.33ghz and
usually, on panther and tiger, when i wanted to put a minidisc thru to record into garageband i had to go to system prefs>sound
and change the audio to line in input option and now there is no option there - just 'built in mic'
and in gb prefs there is 'built in' option and 'system settings' which doesn't really do anything. Connection of the minijack and playing the minidisc in2 it is not getting into the computer at all -
not even in the sound prefs rec volume bars...just the sound coming thru the built in mic.
I opened an old GB and it's the same so i guess it's a leopard thing not a garageband thing essentially.
Any offers for solutions or info? is this usual for leopard?
    Thanks

    Found answer trawling thru threads!
    For anyone interested -
go to Applications>Utilities>Audio Midi Set up>change the input source there to line in - if the option drop down table has it!
In GB prefs change input to 'system settings'.

  • Startup Sound Pref Pane killed Startup Chime...

I made the mistake of installing and trying out the Startup Sound Pref pane from Arcana -
    http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/StartupSound/index.en.html
I'm running 10.5.6 on an Al Intel iMac. What it seems this pane will do is allow you to turn the startup chime down, but not adjust it back up...if you mute it, it's muted permanently. I've tried uninstalling the pane and flushing caches, and zapping PRAM (though I can't tell if it actually zapped). Still no Startup chime.
I want the Apple default back...how do I fix?..

If you want to start from scratch I would download 1.1b2 and run the Uninstaller that comes in the .dmg, which should remove all vestiges of Startup Sound.pref from your Mac.
Normally the System Volume controls the volume of the Startup Chime if it is the last thing that you adjust before you Shut Down your Mac. For example, if you set the System Volume to the level at which you want to hear the chime and then Shut Down your Mac, when you Restart your Mac, that should be the volume level that you hear the chime. Likewise, if the last thing you do is mute the System Volume and then Shut Down the Mac, when you Restart the Mac, you should not hear the Startup Chime.
The one caveat to this is if your Mac has been sleeping. If you waken your Mac and immediately Shut Down, when you Restart the Mac, the Startup Chime will be muted. To insure that your Startup Chime is not muted, after you awaken your Mac, either play a sound intentionally or adjust the System Volume, then Shut Down your Mac and when it Restarts the Startup Sound should be the level that you have set.
On my iMac Intel, even though I have external speakers, the Startup Chime plays through the internal speakers. On my old iMac G3, with external speakers connected, everything plays through the external speakers.
The Startup Chime is your Mac alerting your that it has passed the POST (Power On Self Test), and that the Test has found usable RAM installed at startup. iMacs, based on the model, have a series on Alert Codes, chimes, beeps or flashing power indicator lights, that alert you when the POST encounters problems.

  • Connecting a sound bar to Toshibia 50L1450U: Can it be done?

I am trying to connect my iLive sound bar to this TV but there doesn't appear to be an audio out option. Is it possible to connect the sound bar via usb or some other way?

Unfortunately the Time Capsule is missing the circuitry that the AirPort Express has that processes the AirTunes stream to get it out to your amp. So, whether the Time Capsule or your iMac is hosting the iTunes Library, in order for your amp to be able to use it, you will need the Express.

  • Sound glitch in portion of audio in timeline

I've recently been having a strange glitch in the audio portion of my FCE projects. Unfortunately, I didn't discover it until after DVDs had been burned.
This has happened when I have a timeline with nested sequences. When I scroll the playhead to the section of the timeline where the problem is, I can hear a loud popping/hum/static-y sound. The closest I could compare it to would be plugging and electric guitar into an ungrounded amp.
If I go within the sequence to play on the timeline within the sequence, I either get the same thing or it plays without a problem.
When I get to the part of the timeline where the problem is and play it within the timeline, it repeats a section of the audio from earlier in the timeline along with the audio that is matched with the correct video. It will play 1-2 seconds repeatedly.
I worked my way back to the anamorphized versions, the exported versions to the original timeline. I'm not sure if the problem happens upon export, since I don't usually listen to the outputted quicktime movies before I add them into iDVD.
Any ideas or has anyone else know how to resolve this?
    Thanks in advance

I was having the same issue. I thought my MAC had a hardware issue - When I would even try to lower or raise the volume using the F11 and F12 keys that popping sound would be there - It does sound like plugging in a line level mic with that popping sound. I did the Audio mixdown render prior to Exporting as a Quicktime format and it works. I did not have to do that when I had my old G4 Powerbook, but now I have to to this one extra step. Not sure if this is a fix that can be worked out in the future - Im still using Final Cut 3.5 - maybe there is a fix in a later version.
Final thoughts: Do a audio mixdown and your good to go.
    Cheers.

  • HELP!! No sound while recording thrugh M-Audio firewire 410

I am using Logic express 7 with an M-Audio firewire 410. I have my guitar plugged into the mbox and Logic is picking up the signal from my guitar, but I cannot monitor the sound while recording OR hear anything else at all. When I unplug the mbox, however, I can hear everything that i just recorded along with everything else in the song fine. I just need some help figuring out how to monitor the sound, PLEASE!!!!

Logic always uses the same audio interface for input AND output, so I suppose your problem is that you do not have any speakers connected to you M-Audio interface. Try adding a pair of speakers to it. If there's still no sound, go to Logic's audio settings and see if "software monitoring" is active or not.

  • Level out Audio clips to -6db without going into SoundBooth.

    Hi,
I'm trying to level out Audio in my Premiere Pro CS 5.5 timeline.
Here's what I've done so far, and it sounds OK.
I laid my 12 minute on a timeline. I then went into Soundbooth from Premiere Pro. I wemt to Process ------ Hard Limit.
It brought up the levels a lttle bit.
I saved it, wemt back in Premiere Pro and clicked on my AudioTrack, I went to Audio Effects and raised the volume to 6 DB. It was still a little low so I added another volume effect from the Audio Effects folder onto the Audio Clip in the timeline. I then raised that up to 6DB as well. Now it sounds good.
The first time I did this I put the clip on the timeline, went into SoundBooth and put a Process ------ "Equalize Volume" on the clip.
I went back into Premiere and when I played it back, the levels were perfect, but the audio would go up and down when someone was not speaking. It was annoying.
So that's why I did the "Hard Limit" I described above.
    Now my question:
Is there a way to level out all of my Audio to -6 without going into SoundBooth? I would like to do it only in Premiere if possible.
If not, How can I get the best possible sound that is level and does not go up and down when someone is not speaking?
    Thanks in advance.
    Premiere Pro CS 5.5
    Soundbooth 5

Apply an effect in the MIxer ton the tracack that you want to contyrol.
You have t olook a little for the Effects Twirl down Triangle thingy.  Adobe HIde this stuff a bit. ( Check the Manual).
Next . It s perfectly normal to "ride" the levels of any  audio.  ( Music,FX and Voice). Do it in the MIxer.THe MIxer in PPRO is morte powerful than many realise
.BTW - Sound Booth is a dog - compared to Audition or ProTools or even Premiere (for most people)

I have read almost everything but CANT FIGURE THIS OUT, PLEASE HELP ME OUT HERE :-)
My PCI Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio is conected to my Sony DTS/DD Reci'ver using a Mini Jack to Toslink cabel connected in the blue Digital Out minijack on the sound card and to my Optical?Toslink input on my reciever.
I have enabled SPDIF out / Digital Output Only
I have tried whit and whitout the Bit-Matched
I have treied the different sampling rates 44, - 96 KHz
I have tried playing from MS Media Player and DivX player. (dvd, mp3, radio li've, nett tv)
    Im using Vistax32
I believe i have the correct settings and the correct cabel, but cant get no digital sound out, whats wrong?
First I tought I neede the Digital I/O module from Creativ, but I have read that this is?NOT necessary.
PLEASE ANY THING THAT CAN HELP ME SOLVE THIS WOULD MAKE ME REALLY HAPPY :-)

YOU DONT NEED THE I/O accesory, or rather it is not essential. (unless your reciever only has digital optical(toslink) in?My experiment worked! alss ya need to connect from the sound cards digital out to your recievers coax digital audio?in is: "mono" mini (/8 inch) male to rca style male coax cable. you may have to choose digital only and somy other tricks from a given creative software(?they vary)?and or select the correct input for a given reciever....my Harman Kardon avr 00?and avr 300 series?are particularly tricky. • Optical Input on Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-E with Logitech z-5

So i plugged in my Optical cord into my new sound card the Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-E and it worked only in the Front right, Front left, Front centre, and the subwoofer. Now i hear i need a external decoder... but then again that my sound card should decode it as well... the place i bought my card recemended a optical cord for my card?with the?speakers i have?(the?Logitech Z-5500) How much are decoders? What should i do next? Creative seams to have limited support especialy on optical inputs.

I must have answered something like that in another thread sometime ago, but here goes:
A single SPDIF connection, optical or coaxial, will only transfer stereo in analog form; no rear or centre channels!
There are two ways you can get all speakers playing via such a connection:
() Get your speakers to upmix the audio source to play on all fi've of them
    (2) Output a Dolby Digital (AC3) or DTS signal. These contain the multichannel information encoded in the stereo signal. A suitable decoder (such as the one contained in the Z-5500) will be able to analyze the signal. Unfortunately, this is something you can mostly find in movies.
So, to sum it up, no natural everyday multichannel sound over one SPDIF (e.g. no EAX, directsound3d etc.)
