Connection classes

hi
i wrote a conenction class some time ago that used oracle's connection cache. this worked great, creating and releasing resources as required be it for jsp or a swing application.
i am now trying to write a more generic connection pool class that is not tied to an oracle database and after many many long nights i'm stumped!!
i have written 3 classes to accomplish this. one implements DataSource, the other is ConnectionPool class itself and the third is DBConnection, a kind of go-between which i also used (obviously modified) with the oracle connection stuff.
so i create the pool for x number of connections and all works fine (pool class is ok as far as i can tell), with calls to retrieve connections made via the DBConnection class. when i used the oracle stuff, my DBConnection class would remain 'static' (though not declared as such) througout the life of my application without explicitly passing the DBConnection object along all my classes. so any call to new DBConnection() from another class would use the existing pool of conns and i would reuse from there.
implementing my own pool now has every call to new DBConnection() actually creating a fresh pool of connections as the boolean value that is set when the pool is created is obviously false for a new instance of that class.
my question is therefore, how do i contruct my DBConnection class such that new calls to it, do not create a new instance entirely and hence a new pool?? i don't know how oracle does it with their cache classes but it works incredibly well without passing the object around all the classes. or even how could i construct my DBConnection class such that it remains as one instance throughout the life of the application - again without passing the object reference around??
any help on this would be most appreciated. thanks
John.

The way I have done it is this:
ConnectionBroker: a singleton class that serves as a repository for java.sql.Connection objects. Clients get access to the single instance of ConnectionBroker through the static getInstance() method. They then call the getConnection( String dbName ) method, passing in the name of the database they wish to connect to (each db that the broker knows about is given a name). The connection is flagged as "busy" by the broker until it is returned by the client. Clients are required to return the connection to the broker when finished by using the returnConnection() method. This is typically done in a finally block to ensure that connections are always returned to the broker.
DBConnection: a wrapper around the Connection class that adds a boolean "busy" flag. Its constructor takes a DBProperties object as an argument, and it handles the creation of its java.sql.Connection object.
DBProperties: encapsulates the information needed to connect to a database - driverName, url, uid, password, and name. Name is a string used by the ConnectionBroker and its clients to identify a database.
properties files: There is one master properties file, which contains one entry for each database the ConnectionBroker will provide connections for. The key of each entry is the database name, and the value is the name of another file that contains driver, url, etc. information for that db. These files are read using Class.getResourceAsStream(), so they can always be read provided that they reside somewhere in the system classpath.
The ConnectionBroker is not dedicated to a single database; it can be used to pool connections to an arbitrary number of databases. Connections are created in response to user requests only when there are no non-busy connections available to the requested database.
usage example for a database named webdb:
masterdb.properties:
webdb=webdb.properties:
webdb.properties file:
driver=sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver
url=jdbc:odbc:webdb
uid=
password=
client code:
DBConnection dbConn = null;
Connection conn = null;
try {
    dbConn = ConnectionBroker.getInstance().getConnection( "webdb" );
    conn = dbConn.getConnection();
    // sql stuff here
} catch ( SQLException ) {
    // error handling here
} finally {
    if ( dbConn != null ) ConnectionBroker.getInstance().returnConnection( dbConn );

  • External Connection Class

    Hi,
    Paul Buchkowski mentioned an External Connection Class in framework. Does
    anyone know whether this class has been documented somewhere ?
    Thanks,

    My understanding is that a virtual pipe is opened up between the two
    hosts(client and server [server usually being Forte]), and that will
    ensure separation of data that may be inbound to the server from
    multiple hosts. I am not sure what happens if the one client makes
    multiple connections to the host, perhaps a unique handle is created for
    each connection and this will keep the data streams seperate.

    Subject: External Connection class Question
    I have read where Forte suggests that for inbound external
    connections, you
    create a single listener task, and for each connection request it
    returns a
    new ExternalConnection to process. My question is fairly simple :
    does
    this mean that in Forte's infinite wisdom it can distinguish between
    two
    different read/write sequences happening at the same time and needing
    processing differently? In essence, are we assured that two different
    streams of data, writing to what they see as the same port, will be
    going
    to the correct processing thread? If so...Cool.

  • 'class' or 'interface' expected" on Connection class in java.sql.*

    I am currently getting an exception "Main.java:20: 'class' or 'interface' expected". I had the database connection working, but then I tried to add something else and I feel like I might have changed something. I am wondering if there is a problem importing the java.sql. library; since that is where the Connection class is located. Thanks for your feedback.
    package javaaaplication2;
    import java.sql.*;
    public class Main {
        /** Creates a new instance of Main */
        public Main() {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            Connection con = getConnection();
            System.out.println("The connection is: " +con );
        private static Connection getConnection()
                Connection con = null;
                try
                    Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
                    String url = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/patients";
                    String user = "root";
                    String pw = "qwerty";
                    con = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, pw);
                catch (ClassNotFoundException e)
                    System.out.print(e.getMessage());
                    System.exit(0);
                catch (SQLException e)
                    System.out.print(e.getMessage());
                    System.exit(0);
                return con;
        }

    You closed your Main class with a bracket, so your getConnection() method isn't in a class
    public class Main {
        /** Creates a new instance of Main */
        public Main() {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            Connection con = getConnection();
            System.out.println("The connection is: " +con );
    }That is your entire Main class. Anything below it isn't in the class.

    What is the Oracle database version? What is the JDK version? Various versions of classes12.jar are available.
    Please download classes12.jar from

  • Connection Class

    Hi guys, I have just started using java recently can you help me, I'm doing this Connect class to connect to DB (DB2) or (Oracle) so i want to just to call this class in any other classes that will need to conect to DB can you help me how can I do it?
    thanks

    I did that, and i did a class defined as below:
    public PropertyFileRetriever(String propertyFilename) {
    properties = new Properties();
    try {
    //InputStream input = Connect.class.getResourceAsStream(propertyFilename);
    //properties.load(input);
    properties.load(new FileInputStream(propertyFilename));
    }catch (Exception e) {
    throw new PropertyFileNotFoundException();
    but the is runtime error complaining about the property File can not find. The property file is in the same directory as the main program..

  • Packaging a Database Connection Class

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a database connection class, which allows me to establish a database connection and subsequently uses this connection to query the database.
    The code for the package is as follows:
    package com.mycom.javaloader;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.driver.*;
    import com.mycom.javaloader.*;
    public class DatabaseConnection
    // Database connection objects
    private Connection DatabaseConnection;
    private Statement DatabaseStatement;
    private String ConnectionString;
    // Object constructor
    public DatabaseConnection (String HostName, String DatabasePort, String DatabaseName) throws SQLException, IOException
    ConnectionString = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@" + HostName + ":" + DatabasePort + ":" + DatabaseName;
    public boolean ConnectDatabase () throws SQLException, IOException
    try
    DriverManager.registerDriver (new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    DatabaseConnection = DriverManager.getConnection (ConnectionString, "psicpk", "psicpk");
    DatabaseStatement = DatabaseConnection.createStatement ();
    System.out.println ("Database connection OK");
    return true;
    catch (SQLException e)
    System.out.println ("Database connection failed");
    return false;
    public static void main (String args[]) throws SQLException, IOException
    CustomFile LogFile = new CustomFile ("LogFile.txt", "Output");
    DatabaseConnection PSIConnection = new DatabaseConnection ("10.80.45.93", "1521", "psicpk");
    PSIConnection.ConnectDatabase (LogFile);
    LogFile.CloseFile();
    The odd thing is, when I compile the above as a program (by removing the package statement), it works fine. But, when I compile it as a package and instantiate the class in another program, I get the following error:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: oracle/jdbc/driver/OracleDriver
    at com.mycom.javaloader.DatabaseConnection.ConnectDatabase(Datab
    aseConnection.java:35)
    at TestPackage.main(TestPackage.java:35)
    I didn't think it is any problem with my CLASSPATH setting, as the program runs well on its own.
    Is there any code I need to change when accessing JDBC connections in a package?
    Please help.
    Thanks and regards,
    SiowLing

    No, you don't need to put all the required classes in the same directory. Just include them in the classpath and it should work.
    You can check whether you required classes are in the path or not, as follows,
    commandPrompt:\>javap <full.path.ClassNameofTheClasses12.jar> <enter>
    this should show you all the public methods, variables etc. if the Class is in the path, otherwise "Class /<full.path.ClassNameofTheClasses12.jar>' not found" will be displayed.

    I want to be able to call certain things from the GunMan class,But you don't. So it's irrelevant to the following question:
    but when I run it in the applet viewer, it says "Start: Applet Not Initialized"... unless you're trying to run the GunMan class in the applet viewer. If you are, then don't, because it isn't an applet. If you're actually trying to run the Game class in the applet viewer, then look in its Java console to see what exceptions the init() method is throwing.

    String dbName = "connectiontest";
    String driver = "com.mysql.jdbc.Driver";
    String userName = "root";
    String password = "root";
    try {
    Class.forName(driver).newInstance();
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url+dbName,userName,password);
    System.out.println("Connected to the database");
    conn.close();
    System.out.println("Disconnected from database");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    it is fine till now, but if i will remove the main method (As we are not going to use main method here) the problems starts pouring in.after removing the main method it is giving the following errors in the error console:

  • Error(2): Unable to find class for bean: connection defined by tag...

    I created a project, and a JavaBean that connects to the database and I want to use it in a JSP page that exists in my project.
    Bean:
    package BeerPackage;
    import java.sql.*;
    public class ConnectionBean
    JSP:
    <%@ page import="BeerPackage.*" contentType="text/html;charset=windows-1252"%>
    <jsp:useBean id="connection" class="ConnectionBean" scope="session"/>
    Then I get the error:
    Error(2): Unable to find class for bean: connection defined by tag with class: ConnectionBean
    When I try to build the JSP
    Any ideas?

    Seems even though I have an import, I still have to specify the package name in front of the useBean.
    What am I missing here?

  • Closing connection

    Hello, I work with jdeveloper. I had 10.1.2 which used java version 1.4.2 and I used a simple connection class to call stored procedures in an Oracle db. I have jdeveloper 10.1.3 which uses java version 1.5.0 and the same class fails when I try to use ResultSets. I use to close the connection then return the resultset to whatever called it, now it tells me the connection is already closed when I try to access the resultset. I know this is why it's failing now, because it works if I don't close anything.
    Can someone tell me how/why this has changed, and what I can do about it?
    Thanks
    Classes that use to work:
    public class dbConn {
    public dbConn() {
    public static Connection getCon()
    InitialContext ctx = null;
    DataSource ds = null;
    Connection conn = null;
    try {
    ctx = new InitialContext();
    ds = (DataSource) ctx.lookup("jdbc/app1");
    conn = ds.getConnection();
    catch(Exception e){
    System.out.println("Connection Error");
    e.printStackTrace();
    return conn;
    public static void closeCon(CallableStatement proc, Connection conn)
    try {
    proc.close();
    conn.close();
    catch(SQLException e){
    System.out.println("Error closing connections: "+e);
    public static void main()
    public static ResultSet GenResSet(String uname, String procName)
    Connection conn = null;
    CallableStatement proc = null;
    ResultSet rs = null;
    String callString = "{ call "+procName+"(?,?) }";
    try {
    conn = dbConn.getCon();
    proc = conn.prepareCall(callString);
    proc.registerOutParameter(1,OracleTypes.CURSOR);
    proc.setString(2, uname);
    proc.execute();
    rs = (ResultSet)proc.getObject(1);
    catch(SQLException e) {
    System.out.println("sql error");
    e.printStackTrace();
    finally {
    dbConn.closeCon(proc,conn);
    return rs;
    }

    Ok thanks. So I can learn.. what exactly is my
    misconception about how it works? My beginner view is
    you stored a cursor set from a database query in a
    result set then you could iterate through it. Why
    does it have to be stored in a collection first? I
    was closing the connection before I returned it, or
    so I thought. It went through the finally code to
    close everytime, but I could still use the results.
    Maybe it wasn't closing them?That's exactly your misconception. After you close the connection, your ResultSet is not valid. In simple words, you need a live connection to fetch values from the ResultSet. In your method, you close the connection in the finally block and return the resultset. You will need to hold the results in something else, which would be some suitable collection.

  • Difference between connection = null and connection.close()

    is it correct
    connection = null means connection object is eligible for garbage collection and does not return to connection pool
    and f or
    connection.close() means the connection object return to the
    connection pool
    is there any other difference between this ....?????

    "connection = null;" is just like any other similar Java statement, it removes that reference to the object. If that was the last reference to the object, then it becomes eligible for finalization and garbage collection, with no guarantee that either will actually occur. However, normal connection pool implementation will have a seperate reference to the connection and if the connection has not been returned, will most likely consider the connection to be "leaked" - allocated but never returned, and unusable.
    connection.close(); is a normal JDBC connection method; it (usually) closes the associated objects and releases the connection; it's not uncommon to explicitly close statements and resultsets instead of depending on connection.close(). A connection pooling implementation that works by extending the Connection class MIGHT change the meaning of close() and instead of actually closing, return it to the pool instead. Personally, I would consider such an implementation to be evil and a blight on good programming practices; changing the action of such standard methods is bound to cause trouble, IMHO. More normally, if you were using connection pooling, you would NOT close the connection, but rather call some special method to return the connection to the pool.
