Connection drops or extremely slow connection

Hello,
I have an Early 2008 Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.5. By the time I was running on 10.5.2 my Wi-Fi connection used to work perfectly, but when I updated to 10.5.3 I started to have so many problems with it that I even went back to 10.5.2 for a while.
I remember posting a thread in a forum and people answered me that it was impossible for a software update to mess up my connection. I proved it by downgrading and gaining full connectivity back. I've also found hundreds of people who have been having the exact same problem, but it appears as if Apple just doesn't care enough to give a definitive solution. Instead, I've tried tons of other so-called solutions from other people, that have not done anything good for me.
The problem is as follows: I can perfectly connect to my home network, but after 30 seconds- 2 minutes, my signal drops to just 1 bar (from full 4 bars) and I can no longer use it. To fix it, I have to disable my Airport card and then enable it back, to get another 30 seconds - 2 minutes. If I ever get to be connected for more than 2 minutes, my connection gets reaaaally slow (as slow that it can take me more than 5 minutes to download a 100 KB file).
Anyway, I'm 100% sure this is a SOFTWARE issue since the same computer running on Windows and resting at the exact same place doesn't have a single problem connecting. Of course, it has nothing to do with my router configuration. It is completely, entirely, 100% a problem related to Mac OS X 10.5.3 and above.
I love my computer in many ways, but this issue has been killing me bit by bit. What does a computer without a proper Internet connection work for? Then you can remotely understand my frustration.
Please, if you have had the same problem post it here. Apple has to do something about this, because I can't believe I bought such a useless computer!
Thanks.

Have tried both your suggestions ( and every other on Discussions). Here is this mornings console log:

  • Help needed to Replace existing routers due to connection drop with Extreme

    I currently have an old linksys router connected to my cable modem in the basement. I then have a second router connected via ethernet to the first router located upstairs since most of my computers are upstairs. I am having alot of connection drops with most of the computers. ONe of the computers hardly even connects to the network. Almost all of my computers are macbook pros/macbooks/imac except for 1 or 2 pcs. I would like to start fresh with the airport extreme/express. Should I set it up similar in that I have an airport extreme base station connected downstairs to the modem and then have a second extreme/express upstairs via the ethernet connection. I do have a printer upstairs as well that most of the computers use that is connected wirelessly.
    Any other tips?

    No,
    Express has only one ethernet port which acts either as WAN input if plugged into a modem or as LAN output, if plugged into an end device (PC, Printer), so it cannot be used for input and output at the same time. I'd suggest you do this,
    1/
    - If modem must stay in the basement and cannot be moved upstairs
    - Have modem in basement
    - Run an ethernet cable from the modem to your Extreme's WAN port upstairs
    - Have Express in the basement and connect it wirelessly
    let it join your Extreme's network over wifi, if there is enough signal in the basement
    - If there is no signal in the basement from upstairs' Extreme and Express finds
    nothing or signal is unreliable, then you need to run an ethernet cable
    from Extreme's LAN port (it has 3 in the back) and run it downstairs
    and plug into your Express.
    2/
    - move the modem upstairs and keep the setup same as in 1/
    - no difference, you still have to run the coax cable from basement,
    so you drill no matter what
    3/
    - keep modem downstairs
    - keep extreme downstairs connected to modem
    - keep express upstairs and join it wirelessly to your Extreme's network
    - plus side is - there would be no cables running upstairs
    - downsides of this setup are:
    you'll have router with only one ethernet port upstairs - so if you have"
    multiple desktops, you will have to rely on wifi
    Extreme's signal is stronger than Express's - I'd put it into a place where
    my family spends most of the time
    It all depends on your house setup, whether you have desktops or laptops only, ...
    As a preference, I like to keep Extreme close to my main computer as I connect to it via ethernet rather than wifi (much better speed). My wifi is only for laptops and iPods.
    Also, seing the Extreme's status light tells me what is going on without running to a basement when internet starts acting up.
    Rule of thumb - if you can drill, then drill and take advantage of the gigabit speed as opposed to wifi's 100megabit or whatever your signal lets you get up to. This is very noticeable when streaming movies via Netflix, AirPlay etc...
    If drilling is too much hassle, you live in an apartment unit or it's a transitory place for you, just use Wifi. If you are planning on living there for a while, cables will make you happier than wifi - no interference to worry about and better speed
    It's up to you.
    My apple TV is also connected to my Extreme via cable - speed is incredible. Wifi used to choke up every now and then.

  • Vigor 120 bridged with EA4500 extremely slow connection

    I've set up PPPoE on my EA4500 router with a Vigor 120 modem in bridged mode and it says an internet connection is established, but the connection is extremely slow on all my devices. When I run the speed test within the EA4500 firmware it appears fine, but I cannot load any web pages on my laptop or other decives because the connection is so slow. The connection is slow with both wired and wireless connections. I've tried changing the MTU settings with no success. I've also tried using a different router and connecting the modem directly to my laptop and using PPPoE within the laptop and these both work fine, so I think it's clear there is a problem with the EA4500 router itself.
    I asked about this on a different forum (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=112242) but no one could figure the problem out - perhaps someone has a better idea on this forum.
    In the meantime I'm just using the Vigor 120 to authenticate and connect to the internet itself, with the router in DHCP automatic configration mode. I think this is causing a double NAT.

    Reset the EA4500 to factory defaults and update to smart wifi firmware. After the upgrade is complete, reset the EA4500 to factory defaults.
    http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/ccc
    If you decide you want to try putting your Vigor 120 back in to bridge mode, make sure the vigor 120 has the latest firmware first. Then try MTU of 1492 on EA4500. Or follow this............
    http://homekb.cisco.com/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=386
    It's always possible that the EA4500 is not compatible with you ISP's PPPoE.
    You can also try these methods.......including bridge mode.

  • SRP521 Lan connections drop once wan is connected

    I have had this issue on the last 3 srp521's I deployed, all were pulled from service and replaced with a different model.  Firmware is 1.1.24 and I also tried on with 1.1.27
    With only power and 1 lan connection I start a ping to the router and a ping through it to the DG of the wan ip.  When I plug in the wan cable I get a single reply from the wan ip DG and then my lan connection drops.  I have to power cycle the router to get it to come back.  I have a static set on the WAN and am using 10.10.10.x on the lan side.  The link light on the router stays on for both lan and wan.
    Any idea on what to look at?

    Hi Sage,
    I'm not sure that I follow what you mean when you say the WAN goes down as soon as it is connected.  Could you provide more detail please?  Can you specify what address you are using for the WAN and LAN (with masks).
    Also, I'm not sure what you mean by:
    I plugged it into the its own switch and it went down as soon as connected
    Regards,
    Andy

  • Frequent wireless connection drops: how to re-connect?

    My wireless connection has become quite unreliable of late, and I'm not sure how to diagnose/fix the problem. Configuration:
    MacBook Pro4,1
    Intel Core2 Duo
    Max OS X 10.6.6
    When the connection drops, I first try to "Turn Airport On" with the menu bar, but this has no effect.
    Using Network Preferences to "Turn Aiport On" also has no effect.
    Turning to the command line, I try 'ifconfig -a', and get:
    en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
    status: inactive
    I tried bouncing the en1 interface using:
    ifconfig en1 down
    ifconfig en1 up
    But the status stays inactive. Any thoughts on what I should try? A reboot always
    resets things and gets them working again, but it's incredibly annoying to have to
    reboot when in the middle of something.

    bangaboo wrote:

    It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu.
    3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    5) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
    They may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them. If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.

  • Devices not connecting through Airport extreme wired connection

    Hi
    I just got an Airport extreme to use as an extention of my existing network, and to plug some devices in so that they can connect to the internet for updates (Sony Blu-ray player, dish network receiver, slingbox)...
    my wireless is from a linksys/cisco wireless router (4-port) wrt310n, that is connected to my cable modem. The airport is set and has the green light showing. The blu-ray player and dishnetwork receiver are plugged into two of the ports. The blu-ray player says it can't connect to the internet. The dish network receiver says it is connected, giving ip address/submask, etc.
    If I take my macbook pro and turn off wireless and plug into the airport it will not connect to the internet.
    What have I not done to allow wired connection to the airport extreme to connect to the net?
    thanks
    David

    Thanks for the clarification of your setup.
    Unfortunately, the bottom line here is that this is not going to work.
    The ethernet ports on the Extreme will only be active if you configure the AirPort Extreme to "extend a wireless network". But, it can only "extend" a wireless network from another Apple router. It's not compatible for this purpose with your Cisco router or any other manufacturer's router.
    If you are unable to connect the AirPort Extreme to your router using an ethernet cable, you might want to take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal.
    I should clarify that if you connect the Cisco and AirPort Extreme using ethernet, you would not use the "extend" setting on the AirPort Extreme. This is only used if the device is connecting to another Apple router.

  • Extremely slow connection to Music Store and Streams

    There have been multiple threads detailing troubles people have been having both with the iTunes Music Store and streaming music via iTunes. Extremely sluggish performance has been reported for weeks now.
    Over the past 3 weeks I've found that a search on the Music Store can take 30 seconds or more. Downloading a song can take minutes. Browsing is extremely sluggish. Sampling songs results in repeated rebuffering ("Network Stalled/Rebuffering Stream" messages), even if one sets the Streaming Buffer Size to "Large". I've tried reverting to 6.0.4 and shutting off the Firewall and Personal File Sharing, none of which had any effect.
    I experience the same sluggishness both at work, via a high speed office LAN/T3 connection, and at home, via a basic DSL setup. The friends and associates I've surveyed are experiencing the same sluggishness. No proxy servers are used at either location.
    I don't know about others, but I've found this sluggishness makes the iTunes Music Store completely unusable. It would be helpful if Apple were to give us some kind of indication as to what's going on if it wishes to retain it's dedicated customer base. If it persists, there are alternatives. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onlinemusic_store#Online_Music_Store_Comparisontable)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iTunes 6.0.5 (20)

    Yes it is sluggish at times but far from unusable. Why not select the "Loads ....before playing" option in iTunes prefs>Store to get over the rebuffering problem. I think it is slow due to the popularity and high volumn use that the iTMS gets. Try a different time of day. I use it late at night (USA time) and don't have all the problems that you are experiencing.
    Why not contact iTMS customer service directly as Apple does not currently pay much attention to the forums. The reponses here are from fellow forum users and not from Apple employees.
    By all means if you are dissatisfied with the iTMS then vote with your pocket book and go else where. Last time I checked it was still a free market place.

  • Access to Hard Drive connected to AEBS - Extremely Slow

    I recently bought this Airport Extreme Base Station, model # MB763LL/A which brings me up disappointments one after another. First its my bad that I did not know AEBS does not support NTFS which forced me to format it to FAT 32 since I only has P/Cs that runs Windows 7. Its obvious that FAT 32 is not gonna allow me to transfer files larger than 4GB. Leaving this first problem aside, second one is the real headache for me. I connected my 2TB WD external HD to the AEBS and it is recognized by my Windows PC but every time I click that Drive or any sub folders in that, it takes awful lot of time. To be precise, it takes at least 2 mins to open a folder or a even for a right click. This is a terrible terrible problem. I can't wait 2 mins every time I click a folder. Do anyone know any fix for this problem or I will have to live with it.

    It is possible that the Win7 "Windows Search" feature may be the cause of the delays in accessing the AirPort Disk (an external hard drive attached to the USB port of an AEBSn)
    To disable Windows Search:
    o Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
    o On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
    o Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
    o Press OK, close all windows and restart.

  • Extremely slow connection to Apple site on MacPro

    I'm connecting from Europe (Poland). I've got LAN connection (i work at university - so it's generally fast) and everything is OK until i try download anything from Apple.com - updates or movie trailers etc. (only from this site!) - it's SLOW (few kB/s)
    I've got few computers in my workplace, every one with different IP but in the same class (156.17.63.210, 156.17.63.135 etc..). Every PC with MS Windows works fine, and do download the same files as Mac but much faster (~1 MB/s). I think difference is only operating system - even broser is the same. I've tried to install fresh Mac OS X (tiger) or use applejack, but did't help.
    Anybody can tell me whats wrong?

    You ought to try just logging into this Apple Forum via Dial-up... talk about slow, 15 minutes some days!
    Might try some tweaks in Terminal, these will all reset to defaults on reboot...

  • Extremely slow connection In Kesgrave - mainly dur...

    Hi,
    Since the 8th March, I have noticed that my connection after 4 - 5pm is incredibly slow (see below for more details).
    I have checked my speed at 7:30am, just before work, for the last two mornings and my connection resumes at the normal 6.5 - 6.7MB speed. Before the 8th March I would get these speeds during the evening, albeit a little slower as it's peak time. I can appreciate that exchange speeds reduce somewhat during peak times but it seems particularly strange that I'm losing 6mb at the moment.
    Interestingly, a colleague of mine lives a couple of minutes away and is connected to the same exchange (Kesgrave) as me. He receives approx 4mb but hasn't seen a dramatic decrease in speed like I have.
    I've checked the micro-filters, router settings etc as I work in IT, but as it's fine in the morning I wondered if there was a peak restriction on my line or poor contention. I'm always well within my monthly allowance so the first option seems unlikely.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Download speedachieved during the test was - 786 Kbps
     For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 2000-7150 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :8224 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 912 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
     IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps
    The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 2.45:17.09:80.59 (SBE:NBEBE)
    These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.
    The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes.

  • JDBC MS SQLserver extremely slow connection...

    Hello,
    I have downloaded the JDBC driver from Microsoft (http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?URL=/downloads/sample.asp?url=/MSDN-FILES/027/001/779/msdncompositedoc.xml).
    I ran it from RedHat Linux (7.2) with JDK 1.4, calling SQLserver running on WIN2000 server.
    Here is my code (very simple) -
    ===========================================
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class TestSQL {
    public static void main (String[] arg) {
         try {
         String query = "SELECT * FROM publishers";
         Class.forName("com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver");
         Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://192.168.0.22:1433", "alex", "xxxx");
         Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
         ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);
         while (rs.next()) {
              String pub_id = rs.getString("pub_id");
              String pub_name = rs.getString("pub_name");
              String city = rs.getString("city");
              String country = rs.getString("country");
              System.out.println(pub_id + " -- " + pub_name + " -- " + city + " -- " + country);
         stmt.close();
         conn.close();
         } catch (Exception e) {
         e.printStackTrace();
    ===============================================================
    The result looks fine (a total of 8 rows retrieved).
    But it took a total of (5.3s real, 2.8s user, 0.05s sys).
    In particular -
    Class.forName() took 1.5 seconds,
    DriverManager.getConnection() took 2.5 seconds.
    Did I do anything wrong? (my TCP/IP connection to the database server is fine, and i don't expect this being the problem.) or has anyone had similar experience?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    alex

    hi Max,
    I would advice you to try some other drivers also, before
    jumping into any conclusions.
    Check if there is some problem with your machine and connection setup, you can get at least the evalution
    versions of other drivers.. and do the test with them too..
    Some nice drivers are from Atinav, Datadirect, Inet etc they provide
    evaluation versions also i think ..
    and please tell us the results too...
    Cheers,
    -Jer

  • WRT54GR extremely slow connection 20kb/s or less!!

    I finaly got my WRT54GR to work on my wired desktop and my wireless laptop.
    but the speed on my wired desktop pc is terrible, for example downloading skype i was getting 20kb/s! thats totaly unacceptable seams i have a 10meg connection with my isp. I also tryed downloading other files from differant sites, same thing around 20kb/s.
    Does anyone have any advice?

    ohai yo!
    ...have you tried bypassing the router to check the connection through the modem?
    if you experience same problem through the modem, then its problem w/ the modem or w/ your ISP. If the connection is fine through the modem, then it might be a problem w/ the firmware. Try to reducing your MTU by 10. if that doesnt help, upgrade the firmware of the router...

  • Extremely slow connection from ipod to itunes

    Im not sure if this the right place to ask this, so i put it in two forum threads. Heres my problem, My ipod works fine, with an exception of few freezing moments while playing much, but thats not the problem. You see, when i transfer my songs from itunes to my ipod, it starts to go, but then my ipod clicks really loudly (for an ipod at least) and the transfer stops, then starts, then stops..and it repeats itself. I does transfer, just unbearably slow, anybody else have this problem? Thanks big time

    I am having a similar problem. I have not been able to sync my ipod since updating to 7.1.1
