Connection failed the file server is running on your machine

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could potentially help me figure out an issue I have been encountering when connection to server via VPN Connection.
I can successfully connect to a VPN connection, however, when I try and connect to my server I am receiveing a prompt that "connection failed the file server is running on your machine"
Does anyone know what this means or has suggestions?
Thanks,
Alex

OK, this seems very weird & I can't figure out if the issue is in my new (simultaneous dual band) Airport Extreme or the Mac (iMac G5) I use to administer it.
When I try to connect to a USB drive connected to the Extreme from my iMac, & the iMac is connected to the Extreme by ethernet, I see the Extreme in the sidebar of Finder, but when I click on it to access the drive, I get a "connection failed" bar across the top of the Finer window. If I click on the "Connect" button at the end of that bar, I get the following message:
"This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally."
The volumes (the drive is partitioned into two volumes) are not showing up as local ones (in the "Devices" section of the sidebar), so I can't access them "locally."
BUT, if I turn on Airport on the iMac, I get the normal "Connected as ..." bar & the volumes appear as expected in the Finder.
The really weird part is if do not turn on Airport & I use the "Connect to server..." Go menu option & enter "afp://Extreme's_name.local" it connects & either or both volumes mount on the desktop as expected. ("Extreme's_name" is the actual name I have given the device.)
Weirder still, if I have one of these volumed opened in the Finder & click on the Extreme in the sidebar again, I still see the "Connection Failed" bar across the top +yet the volumes are there in the Finder window+, can be opened, & otherwise behave normally.
This behavior persists until I click the eject button in the sidebar, at which point the "Connection Failed" bar reappears & the volumes are no longer listed or accessible. Waaaaa?
FWIW, my MacBook has none of these symptoms. Whether connected by ethernet cable or wirelessly, clicking on the Extreme in the sidebar results in the expected "Connected as ..." behavior.
I tried researching the "running on your machine" message on the web & found some references the problem in connection with Windows (smb) sharing. Sure enough, looking in my keychain access file, I saw several passwords for the Extreme with the "where" info as smb://Extreme's_name. However, deleting these (& even all Extreme-related entries) had no effect.
I'm stumped. Any help or even just a clue would be appreciated greatly.

I seem to have eliminated the 'connection failed' problem & its accompanying 'file server is running on your machine' message as follows:
My Extreme was set up for its DHCP server to assign local IP addresses in the 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.199 range. This matched how my old SMC router had been set up for years. The SMC's DHCP server was set up to always assign 192.168.2.100 to my iMac's Ethernet MAC address. I did this because my iMac was set up as a webDAV server to publish an iCal calendar on my local network, using the address "webcal://192.168.2.100/ical/MyCalendar.ics." This worked fine with both the SMC & the Extreme.
I'm not sure why I decided to try it, but I changed the Extreme's DHCP server to assign local IP addresses in the 10.0.2.100 to 10.0.2.200 range. Obviously, this invalidated the address for the published calendar, but the iMac now connects to the Extreme's drive without any problems. (For those who care, changing the calendar's published address to "webcal://MyMac.local/ical/MyCalendar.ics." fixed that issue -- IOW, substitute the computer name for its local IP address. I probably should have done that to begin with, but hindsight is always 20/20, right?)
So my problem is solved, but I still would like to know why this worked. AFAIK, either IP range is equally valid for private networks. Any comments would be appreciated.

  • "This file server is running on your machine." Message on starting Classic

I am having a problem with Classic starting up. When it is almost done loading, i get the message "This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally." The only option is Ok, but upon clicking it the message pops up again. At first it would crash Classic after about three times. After disabling file sharing in OS9, it shows up about ten times before stopping, and Classic continues to run.
System specs are in the signature (the first one)

Have you ever had AppleShareIP installed on your OS 9 System?
When Mac OS X Server is installed, it tends to be perfectly happy with having the Server on the same machine.

It's often only a problem of the service dependencies. SCVMM starts to fast, SQL server on the same machine in not initialized yet. Here are working service dependencies to ensure SQL server is initializes before SCVMM starts.
You can set the service dependencies directly in regedit (as always: be careful modifying the registry ...)
Here is the content of a reg file setting the dependency.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

  • I am running 4.0 version, and each time I open Firefox, I get a software update that says "Downloading Firefox / connecting to the update server", but it just STICKS there??? Why is this happening?

I am running Firefox 4.0 version, but for some reason, it tries to download updates and then gets stuck on trying to connect to the update server. This has been happening the past few days. When I close the update, I can proceed in Firefox without incident (that I know of).

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)
Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.<br />
You may need to delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.
    C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;user&gt;\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)
If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Error "Connection Failed The server may not exist or is not operational..."

This is just FYI in case somebody else runs across this. On one user account, an error window would pop up every so often that said:
    Connection Failed
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
It turns out that the problem was caused by Screen Saver. The error popped up whenever screen saver tried to launch. On the problem account I had the "Pictures" folder selected for the screen saver, and apparently there must be an alias in that folder pointing to something on a remote server, because as soon as I go to System Preferences and open the Screen Saver panel, I get the error.
It has been driving me crazy for months but finally I thought to look in Console, where I saw the error "afp_mount[5045] CFLog (0): CFMessagePort: bootstrap_register(): failed 1103 (0x44f), port = 0x2d03, name = 'com.apple.afp_mount.ServiceProvider'"
Searching for that error led me to the Macosxhints forum at http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-53209.html where a user had posted the same problem. Changing to a different screen saver or a different folder for pictures resolved the issue.

  • '"Connection Failed" : The server "rrnas01" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again' message

'"Connection Failed" : The server "rrnas01" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again' message keeps displaying whenever I try to open any Adobe CS5 applications (except for Adobe Acrobat Pro). It displays until I click "OK" about 15-20 times or so and then will finally let my program open.
I have tried deleting files within my Library/Preferences folder and turning off/deleting login items within my system preferences as other forums suggested but nothing happened. Spending 3.5 hours on the phone with Adobe and completely uninstalling and then reinstalling the entire CS5 Master Collection didn't work either.
Also, it may be helpful to know that my programs worked fine for about three weeks then when we got internet and changed the password (the join, not the adminstrative password) with the wireless network "ScubaSteve" (which I've used with no problems at my old apartment) it started acting up. I have never seen "rrnas01" before so I don't know at all where it came from. I also installed the free 30 day trial of Suitcase Fusion 3 recently, but thinking that could also be the cause I have uninstalled it, and still no help.
Please help me! And please keep in mind I don't know all the computer lingo that a lot of the people in these forums seem to know. Thanks in advance for ny help you can give me.

It may not be possible .. there is a major bug between Mountain Lion and the TC where the TC disk goes off the radar of the computer.
Lion is also affected but not as badly.
7.6.4 seems worse than earlier firmware.. so back to 7.6.1 or 7.5.2 if that is possible.
Obviously that is not a solution for a later Gen5 TC.
Reset to factory after the firmware downgrade. .use all network names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
If the TC is the main router set the dhcp to a very short lease time.. eg 30min.. and see how it goes, or try a longer lease like 99days.
I prefer the very short lease but response has been mixed.
Use ethernet not wireless.. ethernet is always more reliable and stable than wireless.
And last .. a nightly electric timer that powers off every night at midnight for 1min.. would not be the first device we have suggested a fix that amounts to beat the unit to the punch by forcing it to reboot since it is unstable.

  • Error Message: The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your connection information and that the report server is a compatible version. The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.

I have a web page that contains a ReportViewer control.  I am trying to display a report, which is an .rdl file located on the SSRS server, in this ReportViewer control.  I have set the ReportPath and ReportServerUrl correctly.  I am
    getting an error message.
Am I suppose to use an .rdlc file rather than a .rdl file?  Does the web server configuration need to use a certain account?
I am getting the following error message:
The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your connection information and that the report server is a compatible version.
The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.

    Hi bucaroov,
The error "The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found." means the ReportServerURL configured in the ReportViewer control is invalid.
Please follow these steps to solve the issue:
    Logon the Report Server machine.
Open the Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
Copy the Report Server URL from 'Web Services URL'.
Logon the application server(in this case, it is the server that host the web page), check if we can use the URL we got from step 3 to access the Report Server. If so, please replace the ReportServerURL in the ReportViewer control with this URL. If it is
not available, could you please post the error message.
Additionaly, we don't need to provide the extension for a server report. The ReportPath should be like: /<reports folder>/<report name>

  • TS1490 i am running Windows Home Server 2011 and iTunes can't seem to connect to the iTunes Store nor run Genius on my Library.  What do I need to do?

I am running Windows Home Server 2011 and have installed iTunes on my dedicated server, attached to my router.  I can't connect to the iTunes Store nor run Genius on the server ONLY (iTunes runs fine on by two other PCs and my Apple TV and I share the libary that resides on the server).  I am running a very current version of iTunes 64 bit.  I have run the connectivity test and it failed.
My guess is that there is some setting in the Server software that i need to change to let iTunes access urls or computers on the internet.  Does anyone have any experience with this software combination?
    Thank you

Some guy managed to get this to work. The following link is for iTunes 10.5 but it should work for the current release.

I've been connecting my 24" iMac with my 15" MacBookPro either over the WiFi or via Ethernet for months to share hard drive space & to save time transfering files constantly.
But now, all of a sudden, I'm getting the following error message:

+The Server "MacBookProName" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.+
After this, I succeded in being able to connect via Share Screen and via Web Sharing. It is only not working when I access through finder. Also, it's not letting me click on "Connect As..." so I can't check if it's entering the correct info too.
Both Macs are 10.6.6 and both have software fully updated.

I've found a few treads and posts related to this error, but none of the answers seem to work. I have DPM 2010 U7 server backing up my file server (Server 2008 R2). The backup of the D: Drive(which hosts all shares) is failing with the following error:

I've ran SFC /SCANNOW on both servers, rebooted. Ran chckdsk /f on the D: on the file server, rebooted again. Still having the same issue. The BMR and System State backups run just fine, along with the backup of the C:
I am getting the following error on the file server for volsnap.
The shadow copies of volume D: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.
Which caused me to try moving the shadow copy storage to the C:, but then it just fails with the following error. Which makes since as the C drive is 136GB, while the D drive is 27TB.
The shadow copies of volume D: were aborted because the shadow copy storage failed to grow.
Lastly I deleted the entire replica and recreated the protection, with no luck.  I tried to just slowly create the replica by adding one small parts at a time, currently its failing while trying to backup ~300GB.
I've checked the VSS Writiers on the file server, everything looks correct. Here is the print out.

    Hi,
It is strange that the issue still exists after recreating backup.
Please try again to clear all replica, and specifically, move the folder involved in this error to another location such as Drive C and see if issue still exists.

  • I've been advised by Firefox to download a software update, but upon downloading, the bar with green lines running across it with the message 'Connecting to the update server' is just going on indefinitely; can you advise on this?

I was advised by Firefox to download and install an important software update. But the bar with green lines running across and saying 'connecting to the update server is going on indefinitely (about an hour now). Can you advise?
    With Thanks,
    Martin

Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.<br />
You may need to delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.
    XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;user&gt;\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)
If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.<br />
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
