Connection getting slower and slower!

Hi all,
Over the past two or three weeks, my connection has gradually dropped from about 80KB/s to the current 16KB/s.  When it first started happening, I was getting speeds between 40KB/s and 60KB/s, and even sometimes 100KB/s!  Since yesterday, I noticed my speed has been pegged at 16KB/s (although it may have started at the end of last week or at any point over the weekend.)
These are the details off my router, which I rebooted a little while ago but generally leave alone, hoping it'll sort the speed out :

Although I didn't often check the numbers before I started having problems, I do recall the downstream speed being 1584Kbps.  Recently, it's been 480Kpbs, and today, it's 448Kbps.
My results from http://speedtester.bt.com/ taken a few moments ago are :
  Download speed achieved during the test was - 99 Kbps
  For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.

I have done several tests over the past few weeks, all of which should have been logged.
Is there any clue to what might be causing it?  I note that on the 6th, the router automatically updated its firmware.  Could this be related to the final drop to 16KB/s? (Although it doesn't explain the gradual drop in speed.)

Thanks for your reply.
Should have said really about the master socket actually. Connecting to the master socket doesn't change the connection speed.
Although my line isn't the most silent I've used, it's not got noticeably worse over the past few weeks. I don't have a corded phone, so the noise I'm hearing is possibly from the wireless handsets.
And yes, I know the leave the router connected, in this case, I did a full factory reset of the router to try and remove the firmware update as a cause. (I was thinking perhaps the router hadn't rebooted properly after it was installed, etc.)  It's made no difference though.
