Connection keeps dropping out

I'm trying to connect my 10.7.3 mac book pro '13 with 10.6.8 mac book pro '15 via facetime. I've changed DNS settings to 8.8.4.4 so I could actually sign in to my Apple ID and when I call the other mac (which is on the same home wi-fi network) both laptops ring, but when you answer, it either answers the call and then looses connection almost immediately or the picture freezes and the call drops off after a few seconds ???
Appreciate any assistance possible, please.
Thanks so much.
David

  • 3G connection keeps dropping out after 4.2.1 update

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone could help me.
I have the iPhone 4, and it was working perfectly... until I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1.
Ever since then, my 3G connection keeps dropping out, and I'm just left with vodafone UK (with usually 3-4 bar signal) but no 'o', 'E' or '3G' symbol.
After about 20 minutes of no cellular data, I'd get the 'o' symbol, then 10 seconds later it would change to '3G'. But then after 5 seconds it would lose it. The cycle would continue in this way.
Strangely, when at home, the 3G would stay connected. But when I go anywhere, I lose 3G.
When I turn 3G off, I get constant 'o' connection where ever I go. It doesn't drop out.
I've tried resetting the phone, and resetting network settings.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I'm having a similar issue with my new iPhone 4 (w/ 4.2.1)... It continually cycles through the following sequence:
    AT&T / 3G
    AT&T / No Data
    Searching…
    Searching… 3G
    AT&T / 3G
    (loops…)
Here is a video of the cycling. Note the iPhone 4 is just sitting on a coffee table in my house.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7186070/ip4fw421searching.mov
Also worth noting, I just got the iPhone 4 and I updated it to 4.2.1 right away. Previously, I had a 3GS which did not exhibit any of this behavior in the same location in my house. Also, my girlfriend still has a 3GS and has FW 4.2.1 without these issues. I have a video of her phone in the exact same location taken just after the clip above and her phone maintains 3-bars / AT&T / 3G the entire time.
I picked up the iPhone 4 while out of state over the holiday weekend and did not observe any of these connectivity issues, in fact the 3G throughput of the iPhone 4 was significantly better (consistently got >4 Mbps down / >800 Kbps up) than what my family members were seeing with their 3GS models.
I believe it is a baseband issue introduced with the 4.2.1 update for iPhone 4, but I also strongly believe there is some tower component to this problem (ie, software revision at the tower or configuration).
Like others here, I also performed a restore to 4.2.1 through iTunes and setup my phone as "New" and I continue to see the behavior. The phone is unusable in my house unless I manually disable 3G. As a final data point, when I'm able to maintain a 3G connection long enough in my house I get the following throughput from Speedtest.net: 1863 Kbps down / 543 Kbps up.

  • Facetime connection keeps dropping out

    Hi folks,
I'm having an issue when using facetime. If I talk to my girlfriend the facetime connection (using iPhone 4 and 4s) is dropping out every few minutes. We both have 30mb fibreoptic broadband (Virgin UK) so it's certainly not the connection. I have a strong wi-fi connection in the house so I don't have that issue either. She tells me she has full bars on her phone also. Its the same when I use my iPad mini so it doesn't seem to be the phone. However when I'm at work (on a ship) the connection seems to be better even though my internet there is very slow. Any ideas what it might be?

you can try downloading inssider2 (istumbler if MAC) and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. If you then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.
you can also try changing the wireless from b/g/n to just b/g

  • IMac (Early 2009) Bluetooth connection keeps dropping out

I have an iMac (20-inch, Early 2009) that I love.  I've used this machine for the past 3 years for absolutely everything.  It's my primary computer.  There is one issue that is driving me absolutely insane though.
On this machine, at random intervals my bluetooth keyboard or mouse will disconnect while I'm using it.  Then, if I click the mouse or press a key on the keyboard for a few seconds, the device will re-connect.  I have a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse (both Apple-branded) connected at the same time, but only one of the devices disconnects at a time.  If the mouse disconnects, the keyboard will stay connected  If the keyboard disconnects, the mouse stays connected.
This has happened on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.7 Lion, and 10.8 Mountain Lion.  It has happened with the new aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard and the white plastic Apple Wireless Keyboard.  It has happened with the new Magic Mouse and also the older Mighty Mouse.
I've re-installed the operating system several times, and I'm running the latest software for both the Bluetooth chipset in the iMac and the keyboard/mouse.  I've also completely replaced the RAM in the machine, so it's not an issue with bad RAM.
The keyboard and mouse work on my MacBook Pro (same OS, same processor, same amount of RAM, same age) without any issues.  The keyboard also works with my iPad.  In the same exact area of my home, this problem only occurs on the iMac.  When the iMac is in different locations (or even at another home or office) the problem still occurs.  I don't think it's a problem with interference, nor is it a problem with the keyboard/mouse.
I know that when the batteries get low, this problem can happen very frequently, as that's happened to me in the past.  Whenever this occurs, the keyboard and mouse both have battery life above 75%.  It even happens when brand new batteries are in the devices.
For a while it seemed that this only happened when there was a lot of network activity (like if I was using the Finder to copy multiple large files over the network from my file server or another Mac to this machine), and the mouse tracking would start to get really, really slow before it would disconnect.  It was pretty easy to predict when the disconnect was going to happen.  Now, however, it happens at random.  I can be in the middle of dragging something from one window to another and the mouse will disconnect.  I can be in the middle of typing a sentence and the keyboard will disconnect.  There is no warning, and it happens even if there is very little activity on the machine.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.  My iMac is no longer under Apple's warranty, and I don't have AppleCare for it.  I plan on keeping this machine for a few more years, and am probably going to have to open it up at one point because the LCD has some faded vertical stripes that, while not a huge problem, are kind of obnoxious when watching a video or working on things that have a dark colored background.  Is the Bluetooth chipset and the WiFi chipset removable on this model of iMac?  From what I can remember, back in the iMac G5/Power Mac G5 days, the AirPort Extreme card had WiFi and Bluetooth on it, and it was removable.  Is that the case with this iMac, or will I have to replace the entire board?  Or, does anyone have another idea on how to resolve this problem?
I love this computer and I want to keep it for a few more years.  I also like keeping the original peripherals (or at least peripherals from the same manufacturer and time period) with my machines, so switching to a Logitech or Microsoft keyboard/mouse set with its own USB dongle isn't that appealing to me, and it's getting much harder to find USB keyboard and mice (from Apple) that are brand new or in decent condition.  I also don't know if it's possible to add a USB dongle to this machine if it already has an integrated Bluetooth chipset.
Any suggestions or assistance would be very much appreciated.

  • Why do I keep getting a "Safari can't find the server" message? Why does the connection keep dropping out?

When I open Safari and browse, I often get this message: "Safari can't find the server". I will then wait for at least 5 minutes, try the site again, and it will open, but then it just keeps happening on just about all websites now. These are very stable sites. I have had two technicians from my ISP try and fix the problem but with no success. I went to the Apple store, they told me to reset Safari - which I did - but that didn't work either. I am at my wit's end with this. Can someone please help?

Check to see if the firewall is turned on.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall
If the firewall was turned off, try this DNS server.
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • When in sleep mode my wifi connection keeps dropping out

Since updating to iOS 6 on my iPad 3 when I but my pad into sleep mode I loss wifi connection. When I wake the pad the wifi connection comes back.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Not likely an infection at all.
Wake from sleep is usually some problematic USB or FW device.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for Sleep/Wake problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Wi-Fi connection keeps dropping out on my iPad mini since downloading the latest update

Has anyone got some advice please on how to fix the issue of connection issues brought on by the latest update IOS 8

  • IChat Connections Keep Dropping Out...

I'm using iChat to connect to both my AIM and GMail chat accounts... I'm able to log into both and everything works fine... for about a month now or so, I'll randomly lose the connection on one or both of the accounts and it'll tell me that the connection was unexpectedbly lost...
I've tried purging all the iChat.plist files but for some reason, it remembers what accounts I've got configured... I should note that no one else in my house (connected to the same router) has this issue...
Any thoughts on what I should do? It started on my Quad G5 and continued on my Mac Pro - I did import the ichat.plist files...
    Thanks!

I've been getting connection errors in the last week too. My router hasn't changed in at least 5 years, so I'm doubting that it's my router. I have a wired connection.
This weekend, I setup 2 Macs, an iBook G3 600 and an iMac G5, both wired to a D-Link router. The Internet connection was over DSL. We were able to run the iChat for 10 or 15 minutes, then it started to slow down. The frame rate went below 5 and audio started to skip some. We then got a connection error. We then tried again, but almost immediately started seeing low frame rates.
I suppose we were connected via the AIM server, as we were both using our AIM accounts.

  • Internet Connection Sporadically Drops Out

This problem has been ongoing for several months now.  Usually one or more times a day the internet connection will drop out, usually for a few minutes at a time.  Sometimes I get the yellow triangle in the taskbar, other times I don't.  I've gone back and forth with customer service several times.  Earlier this week they replaced my router to no avail.  They now tell me there are no connection drops or errors in the event logs and have tried to blame my computer/NIC.  I explained to them that it's not the connection between my NIC and the router that is breaking, but rather the connection between the router and the internet, or the connection between the router and the FiOS box.  Either way it's on the other side of the router.  I don't know why it doesn't show up in the event logs, but it is just about a daily occurrence.  So far the haven't even offered to sent a tech out.  I've gone back and forth like four or five times now, and I know the customer service reps are just trying to help, but so far it hasn't done any good.  The issue obviously needs to be escalated, so I figured I'd try here first.  Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be?  Has anyone else ever experienced this problem and been told there's no flags or errors in the event logs?  Thank you for your help.

  • Internet connection keeps dropping at night

I'm having a bit of a weird problem with my internet connection. I connect via an ethernet cable and the connection keeps dropping. It generally starts after 7pm and seems to be every 40 minutes. I have changed the microfilters and ethernet cable but I'm still getting this problem. The really weird thing is that all four lights on the hub are blue but the computer cannot connect to the router. Sometimes the connection will just drop other times it will say limited connection. I've finally had to resort to windows diagnostics and sometimes even that doesn't work. I swapped my black hub with the old white one and  I didn't have this problem of the connection dropping but my connection speed dropped to 1.5 - 2mb.
I was thinking maybe there was something wrong with my ethernet card but now I think it must be something in the black hub because the white one worked. Am I correct in thinking I need a new router?

  • External HDD keeps dropping out (without ejecting itself) ~ due to 1 bad partition

    Hi,
As stated above, my faithful WD 1TB MyPassport HDD keeps dropping out by itself, ie. icon disappears from my desktop and I get left with a 'eject before disconnect...' message.
At first it would appear to be a cable/USB/corrupt disk issue, BUT..........this is only happening since I tried to delete a partition using DiskUtility, (I have 2 partitions, I'll refer to the one I was trying to delete 'Partition1'), halfway through this  my Mac froze. I'm using a macbookpro[Alu][intel][OSX10.8.4] and an iMac[10.8.4 again].
    Symptoms....
    1. On reset I found that Partition1 showed up in gray in DiskUtility, but not on the desktop.
    2. Partition2 shows up fine, on desktop and in DiskUtility.
    3. After a minute or so both partitions dissappear and I get my familiar 'you should have ejected' message.
All I want to do now is repair the permissions, verify the disk or delete Partition1...but because the drive keeps disappearing I'm a bit stuck. If I can just get the data from Partition2 before it all drops out then I can cope with binning the rest of the drive.
    I've tried....
    1. different equipment [cables, different macs (macbook and iMac), hubs and USB ports]
    2. using DiskArbitrator to allow the drive to stay connected
    3. using KeepDriveSpinning for the same reason
    4. smashing my head against a brick wall
    Please help....
    Thanks in advance,
    Grant
    Str0ke5

It certainly may be. I do not trust Western digital external drives. I've have several of them fail and it was not the physical drive that failed it was the enclosure electronics. Once I removed the physical drive from the WD enclosure and connect it with a IDE/SATA to USB adapter the actual drives were fine and I'm still using all of them.
It also might be your Mac as these WD Passport drives are USB powered and Mac's are notorious for not putting out enough power on the USB ports to complete power up some of these type drives. There are numerous thread on how a warning will come up thjat the USB port has been disabled because something it drawing to much power from it. And that is with nothing at all connected to any of the USB ports.
Only way to test it to take the drive out of the WD enclosure and use one of those IDE/SATA to USB adapters and see if the same thing happens.

  • Problems with my new phone (wi-fi, all cell reception keep dropping out)

I recently brought my apple iPhone 3GS (last 2 weeks) and pretty much since day 1 I've the same problem. The phone network I have keeps dropping out for no reason at all, wi-fi connection too (I maintain little or no coverage, but as I've taken the sim card back to the company for inspection, they've said the sim is fine and I shouldnt be having this problem) any ideas on how to resolve this issue???

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
I'm afraid i'm not familiar with mHotspot but it sounds like it's not providing correct DNS settings over DHCP and that you need to enter them manually in the phone. You can do this under Settings -> WiFi -> [tap and hold the network] -> Modify network -> Show advanced options -> IP settings -> Static. But for information on what settings you should use you need to check with the support for mHotspot. I suspect you should either use the DNS from your ISP or enter the IP of the virtual interface created my mHotspot.

After updating to IOS7 I have lost a years worth of pictures and my wi-fi keeps dropping out.  Anyone have any similar problems or suggestions?

    Re wifi:
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.
