Connection lost and slow gtk apps

Hi,
I have a wireless connection (zd1211 chip). I am always connected to the router, but when it losts internet connection (telecom italia sucks), gtk apps (not qt) freeze for about 20 seconds before they start.(seems like a connection timed out) I had ubuntu before and I hadn't this problem...
Suggestion?

*Which* GTK apps?  I suspect not all of them.  Do you have mounted filesystems on NFS or something similar?

    hello
my ipad is desactivated, i forgot my passcode, i'm connecting to Itunes to restore but connection lost and i'm asked to add a passcode

Then you will have to use one of these two methods in order to unlock your device
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.

  • Xfce4, gnome, and my GTK apps???

What should I do here? So far I have done a fresh install of arch linux. I installed the light version of gnome, no extras. I did install a few gnome programs, like gnome-system-monitor, file roller, etc... functionality reasoning. I also have skype and audacious installed atm, pretty bare bones as u can see.
What I did was change DE's, I now am stuck on xfce4 and want to drop gnome from this arch install. What should I be worried about and how would you go about removing gnome without ruining the arch install? I really like my setup and my GTK apps, I do not wanna destroy it. Any advice???

  • Connectivity Issues and Slow Speeds Since Service Start

Hi there. I changed ISPs on 01/06/2015 from Sky to EE. Ever since the broadband service has changed over to EE, from day one, the connection has been unstable. We were getting constant disconnects, usually at pretty set times of day, but they could also be rather random too. The disconnects were most often happening at around 11am, and then from 11pm until 2am. Which was all quite odd. I've been in touch with EE home broadband customer support who have run multiple line tests, sent out two separate BT engineers and an EE engineer, all who have found no fault with the wiring and are unable to identify any faults on the lines, even though when I call, I'm more often told that as a result of line tests they've found faults on the line. This conflicting information is rather frustrating. Would also like to add that the router is plugged into the test socket and that's made no difference. For the past couple of days we've only had an occasional disconnect, so it is better in that regard, but in its place the broadband speeds have been noticeably slower. Upon running speed tests via browser, I'm getting information like: Download speedachieved during the test was - 9.19 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 11.79 Mbps Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.69Mbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps  Which all seems fine. However, browser pages are extremely slow to load if they load at all, PSN shareplay won't connect as 'the connection is too slow', videos take an age to buffer, online gaming is hit and miss whether I can actually connect to the server or not. I'm connected to this exchange: https://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WSLAK And the details for my router are as follows: STATUS   Configured CurrentLine Status -- UPLink Type -- Interleaved PathOperation Mode Automatic G.992.5 (ADSL2+) DATA RATE INFORMATIONUpstream 1022 (Kbps)Downstream 13742 (Kbps) DEFECT/FAILURE INDICATIONOperation Data Upstream DownstreamNoise Margin 4.9 (dB) 6.0 (dB)Line Attenuation 16.8 (dB) 31.5 (dB)

Again, looking at the time connected time, it relates back to the last disconnect which was in the afternoon. Again, the router hasn't been manually reset, restarted, etc. The connection dropped out (the adsl light on the router blinked out of existence and took several minutes to start flashing back on again, before going a solid green, as per usual), and was left to its own convenience to return. Note: Just as I pressed the post button, we lost connection again, but I'll stick with the stats I've already pasted here.

  • [Tut] Smooth KDE4 + FF3 (and other GTK apps) integration (Oxygen!)

This is a very simple tutorial, but this problem stumped me for a little (finding gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme), so I thought it might help others. Most normal KDE4 +GTK guides tell you to use  gtk-qt-engine by itself, which some stubborn apps (Firefox especially) don't play nice with. Most Firefox guides tell you to install QtCurve, which is nice, but not nearly as nice as Oxygen IMO, especially since even KDE apps will change to QtCurve.
I used KDEmod, but normal KDE should work too.
1.) Get the KFirefox theme here: http://ramonantonio.net/kde-firefox/ This will change the main look of Firefox. to integrate well.
2.) Get gtk-qt-engine, and install. This will let you set a KDE style for GTK apps. Unfortunately, "Use my KDE style in GTK applications" does not work in some stubborn apps, like Firefox, and you're normally forced to "Use another style" that's not as nice as your main KDE4.
3.) Get gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme from the AUR, and install. This is one of those "other styles", but it's very Oxygen-like.
4.) Go to the KDE System Settings, Appearance, and GTK Styles and Fonts. Select "Use another style", and then 'kde4-oxygen'.
Done! You may need to restart Firefox and/or KDE. Enjoy =]

Hello I'm the creator of the theme. Could you provide more information and test latest version?
Sure.  I am using Minefield 3.0 and I just loaded your theme and it seems to work fine. Looks like you got whatever was causing the problem to work properly.

  • Ongoing Broadband connection drops and slow speed ...

Over the last few weeks i seem to be having random issues with my Broadband connection and teh connection has become very unstable and unreliable
The connection will randomly drop and re-establish, often at a much lower speed that it should be. I regularly get around 3 - 4MB download speed which is good for my area but often find that when it reconnections i get around 1MB. To resolve the issue i usually have to restart my hub (BT HH2) which then usually gets me back to the normal speed.
Luckily I do have a SamKnows box which shows this issue in a graphical form. Note how unstable the connection and speed seems to be! Surely it is not be like this?

Since I updated both my apple products to Io6 I'm not able to do any face time over wifi with my family in india from the UK. My family in india had io5 in their iPad 2  and it was working perfectly fine until the io6 was installed . Can you please let me know if this is a common issue with io6. Thanks

    1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?

  • DSL connection spotty and slow after security update

I updated both the latest security patch and firmware for my Intel Mac Mini a few days ago, and since then have had notably slower DSL internet service. Frequent time-outs in locating servers etc. Skype connection is much much worse than before the update(s).
Anyone have similar experience and/or suggestions?
Mac Mini 1.66 Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

There are two distinct problems that can occur with internet connections, giving two different symptoms.
If, for example, you click on a link or enter a URL in a browser and it takes ages to start the process of loading the page, but once started it loads reasonably well, the issue is with the DNS lookup. On the other hand, if the browser finds the page and looks ready to start loading it pretty quickly, but then takes ages to render the page, the problem is far more likely to be an issue with data timing out.
In the situation where there is an apparent delay in locating servers, the problem is most likely related to the DNS settings in the system. DNS (Domain Name Service) is the means by which the system translates the addresses we find easy to remember and work with (such as www.yahoo.com) to the numbering system the internet itself uses (such as 69.147.11.210 in the case of yahoo). When you send your system off looking for an internet resource by name such as yahoo.com, it first checks with whatever DNS server you have told it to use, what the IP number is, and if that DNS server is slow to respond, the process of accessing the page/resource will appear to hang, sometimes for many seconds.
You can test is the system has a DNS issue by opening a browser and typing http://69.147.11.210 and hitting enter. This should, after a very brief pause, load the Yahoo home page. If doing it this way gives you a markedly faster page access time than usual, go to your network preference pane and open the ethernet configuration (if using ethernet - the airport for wifi or modem for dialup) and in the DNS servers section, manually enter the DNS server addresses used by your ISP. There are usually two or three and they may be listed in the ISP's help pages on the internet, in the documentation that they sent, or in your router.
Actually any valid DNS server IP addresses will do, so you can actually doa search for DNS server addresses and use any that you find. Bear in mind of course that a DNS server in your own locality, or region will be likely to be quicker to respond than a DNS server on the other side of the world... though not always!
Give that a try if the problem is with the system accessing a page to begin with.
If it's that the page loads very slowly once started, the first thing to do is clear the browser's caches (in safari, try 'reset safari' which sets it back to first-used state), which can often help. After that it may be necessary to delve into the depths of the system's IP configuration since some ISPs don't seem to have particularly Mac-friendly service configurations.

    Did the interrupted download finsih?
    How do I check?
If reconnect will it continue from where it left off?

Before doing anything else, I would try what KT mentioned. Afterwards, if you still have problems, then I suggest you do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed.

  • Internet connection tempermental and slow

    Hi,
For about two week now my iMac has been dropping connection quite regularly, or running incredibly slow for a few minutes at a time. It's a problem that exclusively affects my Mac (my mobile and tablet work flawlessly at all times on the same network). When the connection cuts out completely the Wi-Fi menu bar icon remains black, suggesting it's connected even though it isn't.
I can resolve the issue by turning the Wi-Fi off and on, or resetting the router, but the problem will usually come back within 30 minutes. I think the chances of it cutting out are increased when I try doing something network intensive, like downloading a large file or streaming video / watching YouTube. I've tried renewing DHCP lease (whatever that does) and yes, I've tried turning it off and on again. I've ran a wireless diagnostics test if there's anything useful in the file anyone can use.
I'm using a mid 2010 iMac 21" running the latest version of Yosemite (10.10).
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

They will. But given the fact that it is so difficult to reliably reproduce this issue, it is very hard to classify it.
The more people sending in detailed feedback, as in step by step instructions on how to re-create the issue, the easier it will be for Apple to reproduce the issue, in-house. And once they can do that, they can begin to address the issue. And put out a fix.
I am willing to bet my computer that Apple want to fix this issue just as bad as anyone suffering from it ;-)

  • 3G only connects Whatsapp and not other apps (NOT a carrier issue)

    Hi.
Starting around 10 days ago, the 3G connection on my iPhone 4s suddenly stopped working. I cannot check email, browse anything, open any social media BUT Whatsapp, or play games online. Here's what I have done to try to fix it:
    1. Turning on Airplane Mode for a few seconds and turning it back off. Result: not ok.
    2. Resetting the network setting. Result: not ok.
    3. Contacting my carrier. Result: was suggested to change the APN.
    4. Changing the APN. Result: not ok.
    5. Rebooting the phone before Airplane Mode & Reset Network. Result: not ok.
    6. Rebooting the phone after Airplane Mode & Reset Network. Result: not ok.
    7. Reset All Settings. Result: not ok.
    8. Changing the sim card (same carrier that has data plan). Result: not ok. Meaning the issue is with the phone?
    9. Restoring to factory setting. Result: STILL NOT OK.
    10. Comparing setting with other iPhone 4s in the same area with same carrier & data plan. Result: all settings are exactly the same.
    11. Trying my sim card on another iPhone 4s. Result: works perfectly. So it's not a carrier issue, right?
If I recall correctly, it started happening after I synced my music. I reverted the sync mid-way, because it was about to copy some songs I don't want to copy. Then I re-synced.
It should NOT be the problem, but it cannot be a coincidence? Because I never changed any other setting or do anything unusual.
    Additional details:
    1. My phone is NOT jailbroken.
    2. I always purchase legally.
    3. 3G works to chat on Whatsapp, but I'm not able to download the media shared on Whatsapp no matter how small the size.
    4. Notification from Facebook and Echofon works fine.
    5. Sometimes when I open Echofon after a reboot tweets show up. Media on Whatsapp also already downloaded. But they don't continue showing up/not updating in real time.
    6. I have just updated to iOS 6.1.3, but the problem started before I updated and I think I only skipped 6.1.2, meaning my 3G did not work with 6.1.1 (the supposed correction to 6.1 with 3G issue), so I don't think it's an iOS issue.
I'm so sorry for the long post, but I need to make it all clear. So... help? I'm desperate.
    Thanks, guys!

    UPDATE #2:
I chatted with Ashley from Apple Support yesterday and she suggested me to restore the phone and set it up AS NEW, NOT restore from backup.
    And it worked!
Of course, you have to back up everything, but I have my contacts, notes, and pictures on iCloud. All I did was merge them back to the phone from iCloud Setting.
One downside: you'll lose all text messages. But it's worth it.
    So, thank you, Ashley!

I have tried updating and diagnostics but they all come back fine.
    Can anybody help?

Try to rollback OS to earlier time using system restore tool. Maybe some Microsoft update has screwed up WLAN functionality. Very often WLAN driver is listed as option for update.
    Try this as first step.
