Connection Timed Out and Airport Admin Utility Issues

Our lab has and Airport Extreme (802.11g). Intermittently (once a week to a couple of times a day) our airport extreme will stop allowing new connections. Here's what appears to happen. The airport still appears in the the list of networks in the airport icon in the menu bar, but when I try to connect it whirls for a while and then says connection timed out. If I go to the Airport Admin Utility the base station doesn't appear there even though all of the rest of the ones on our network do (I should at this point, mention that we both ethernet and WiFi layers on our network--the base station operates as an access point in bridge mode). The only solution is to power cycle the base station. A couple of extra tidbits.
* Base station firmware is current at version 5.7.
* We never have more than about 8 users connected to the base station.
* This inability to connect is independent of what computer is trying to connect and even occurs with iPod touches.
* This problem has occurred for a couple of years (multiple firmware versions).
* I also have similar problems on a network at home that has the new Airport express/extreme N arrangement on a cable internet connection.
* Sometimes this seems to fix itself after 30 minutes or so of just ignoring it.
* The restoration of the ability of the airport to accept connections after the power cycle is always immediate.
So couple of questions:
1) Do other people see this problem?
2) Is this some problem with the WAN network connection impairing the ability of the base station to establish WiFi connection that eventually resets itself after something times our or resets?
3) Any suggestions as to what to do about it?

Yes, I have the exact same problem.
It's intriguing because I share the connection with my landlord who is often away. The base station is connected in his suite and we seem to never have any problem when only my wife and I are connected on it. I use a iMac 21.5" and my wife a 13" White MacBook (5.2). When he is home (about 1 week per month), that's when the connection will randomly disconnect exactly as you described. He uses a iMac 24" and occasionally an old iBook.

I put this post last November, but no one seemed to have a solution to it, so I thought I would try again...

Two reasons I don't think that this is likely the issue. Both are based on my assumptions about how noise would affect the working of a WAP. If these assumptions are erroneous, please let me know.
The first is that I have tried both automatic channel selection and manual channel assignment based on an unused channel that was several channels away from other WAPs. Kind of circumstantial since other devices can emit noise in the same region of the spectrum (our phones are 5.8GHz and the microwave is no where near the base station.
The second though, is that I can stand literally a foot away from the base station with my notebook or iPod touch and still have the same problem. It would seem the the noise would have to be enormous to interfere with a device that close the the base station. Also, why would the other connected devices continue to work?
In the interest of providing a complete picture, I would say I have thought quite a lot about whether noise is a problem. This base station is installed in a lab, with lots of electrical equipment whirring away and to make matters worse, the base station itself needed to be installed right next to (Within inches) a circuit breaker box. I winced when I did this.
Interestingly, the thing normally does work and the signal strength & signal to noise (reported by airport utility) and transfer rates are quite good when you can connect.
    Thanks,
    Michael

  • AirPort Management Utility and AirPort Admin Utility

Is there a difference between AirPort Management Utility and Airport Admin Utility? I see that the Airport Management Utility has not been updated for a while while the Airport Admin Utility is more recent. Does the latter replace the former?
    Thanks!

Is there a difference between AirPort Management Utility and Airport Admin Utility?
Yes, the Management Utility gives you the ability to monitor some aspects of your Apple base station.
The AirPort Admin Utility allows you configure and control the Apple base station.
Does the latter replace the former?
    No

  • I tried to update my iPad 2 to ios 5. It starts out fine and once its done, it tells me the network connection timed out and that I should try again, even thought I have internet. How do I update my iPad without it doing that?

I need help updating my iPad to ios 5, without it telling me that the network connection timed out.

You can download the correct iOS upgrade manually to your computer and then apply it to your iPad using the iTunes app on your computer. After you have downloaded the correct upgrade press the Option/Alt key and click on the Check for Update button in the iTunes app. Browse to the file on your computer, select it and iTunes will do the rest to install it.

  • Connection timed out and problem forwarded.

Ok im having this problem that i cant download any purchases or make any new ones because the connection times out .So i made all the changes listed on help .Still not solved .So i ran a diagnostic and identified the problem that i can log on to the store but cant 'make a secure connection' to make any purchases .If anyone has the solution to this problem please write it here or make some suggestions .Also i forwarded the problem to apple through the diagnostic and it was written that they would evaluate it .Does this really help and they contact you or something ?Also whats an apple advisor and how to get to them for help ?.Please.....help needed urgently here,im not able to download anything.

My problem is solved now and i realized that this question has been asked many times so i'll write why this session timed out thing happens .Its because of the internet connection .You wont be able to access downloads if all your connection speed is sucked by applications like torrents(even when they are paused) .So shut them and make sure all the bandwidth is available for itunes and try again .Im sure it will work

  • Applescript and Airport Admin Utility

    Have you considered using Automator?

  • Upgrading to 4.2 iphone and ipad error "network connection timed out"

When trying to upgrade both ipad and iphone to 4.2 the download runs then stops with error message "network connection timed out" and says try again later. I have downloaded movies that take over an hour so I know it is not just time. I have trying turning off firewall and virus as well as empting cache and still no results. really believe it has something to do with windows 7 settings. any ideas?

I was having the same problem and after several weeks of technical support they basically gave-up and suggested I try installing Kaspersky KIS 2012 (not yet released, but available on their ftp download site as a "current version").
Anyway, I installed it and now I can update my iOS on my iPhone and iPad.  Voilla!  However, Kaspersky claim that this is not a common problem.  Yeah, right!
If you want to upgrade to KIS v12 (2012) or KAV v12 (2012), then here is how:
    1) Download v12 (2012) from the ftp site here:
    ftp://ftp2.kasperskyftp.com/consumer-products/Current_Versions/KIS2012/
    2) Disconnect from Internet (doh!)
    3) Stop Kaspersky (right click on the "K" in the tool tray and select "Exit")
    4) Uninstall Kaspersky from the Control Panel (Programs / Add-Delete Programs)
    5) Reboot after uninstalling old version
    6) After rebooting, install KIS/KAV v12 (2012)
    7) When it prompts for install key, re-connect to the Internet and enter the key code (usually on the back of the envelope the original installation disk is in).  The key code for earlier versions should work (at least it did for code with KIS 2010, two versions earlier).
    8) Reboot when done
Finally, if this works for you (or anyone else), please post here, since Kaspersky seems to think it is very rare case that it worked for me... ha!

  • SRM7.0- Connection timed out error

    Hi,
We have set up SRM 7.0 system (SP01) and we were able to created all the BOs without any issues. As per the inputs from SAP support, we have recently upgraded to SP03 level. Post upgrade, we are not able to create any BOs. We are getting "500 Connection timed out" and receiving error message "An error occurred while trying to connect to the provider".
Appreciate your help in this please.
    Regards,
    GM

    Hi GM,
Increasing the default value of the UWL property "Timeout Value for the Connected Systems, in Seconds"   to 300 secs.
i assume SSO configuration / UserMpping configuration between portal and backedn is fine here.

  • Airport Express not Appearing in iTunes/Airport Admin Utility

After upgrading to iTunes 7, Airtunes did not work, so I followed the tips on the forum discussions, on MacOSXHints.com (resetting the IPv6 preference) and so on.
However, now iTunes will not recognise the base station at all. I think this is connected to the fact that the base station will also not appear on the Airport Admin Utility list. BUT... I am able to access the Airport Express by entering its IP address and password via the "Other" button. This has allowed me to check the AEx configuration settings, reset the hardware, re-upload the firmware, and even re-configure the AEx from scratch.
I am able to use the Internet through the AEx, and the network appears in my airport menu bar list, so I can select it and other wireless networks in range... It seems that iTunes and Airport Admin Utility just cannot see it. I have tried every combination of 'soft reset', 'hard reset' of the Aex, trashing of various airport admin utility and itunes preferences, and restarting software and the whole computer but this problem still persists.
Any ideas?? iTunes 7 is great, but I want my Airtunes back!!
    Thanks in advance - Danny

you may be suffering from wireless interference.
download iStumbler and note the channels other networks in the vicinity are broadcasting on, then change the channel your network is using as far away as possible from those.
