Connection timeout on startup+parental controls?

I've been having a problem with my computer. Whenever I log into my account and try to start the internet, it takes a few minutes for the internet to work; if I try to access a webpage prior to this indefinite span of time, the internet ends up timing out. The same thing happens with parental controls; everytime an HTTPS website is approved, it takes a few minutes for the internet to start working again. I am currently running OSX 10.9, if it heps clarify things. This problem only appears to be happening on my account; the internet works fine on my parents' accounts. Help?

I've tried vchanging the service order, but that didn't work. What else can I do?

  • Safari, Secure connection to sites, and Parental Control

I'm setting up Safari for a child, and have Parental Controls enabled and am customizing the list of sites that can be visited. I'm allowing Netflix.com and have multiple http and https Netflix URL's allowed. However, when I test accessing this site, Safari gives an error stating that it cannot establish a "secure connection".
The same computer, with a different account, can access the same URL without the error. My assumption would be that since I specifically allowed several Netflix.com URL's, that this would work just fine. By granting specific access, you are bypassing Parental Controls in a controlled way.
What's causing this to not work?
    Thanks for your help.

Netflix only provides HTTPS when loggin in or visting the main site, not for the content or it would have to encrpyt the video stream (expensive).
It also sends one to another site (with another name "movies.netflix.com" here) to view the content, perhaps you have to access the account from another machine, grab the URL it directs you too and enter that into Parental Controls.
Silverlight also has to be updated, check your Flash too.
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
I did see the thread about using the IP address for HTTPS sites, but wouldn't there be a large number of IP addresses associated with a Netflix type of site due to all of the streaming video feeds available?
If that wouldn't be a problem, does anyone know how to determine the IP address of Netflix?
The video streams are not encrypted, and IP addresses are just the physical buildings of the servers themselves, the buisness name (URL) can change locations and that's what the Domain Name Server is used for to resolve those IP numbers for you in case they do change.
Netflix log in and content delivery have different IP addresses, the content delivery may use IP's of servers closer to your location, so it would not assist you for me to give those out.
You can install Firefox web browser and a add-on called FlagFox, which displays a little country flag in the URL address bar of each website you visit which you can right click and "Copy IP" if you so need it.
I don't advise using the IP, as that can change, use the URL so the Domain Name Server of your ISP can provide the correct IP address so your comptuer can connect.
Also Firefox has more add-ons for control and a nearly completely customizable web browser that may be a better choice for children/special needs (big buttons, type etc) than Safari.
There is Public Fox which can lock down certain aspects of the browser (prevent downloads for instance or changing things.)
Theme Font & Size Changer which can enlarge the type of Firefox itself, there is NoSquint which can auto-zoom all web pages etc.
There are Firefox Personas and Themes that can dress up or "childize" the browser so it's more fun for children.

  • Safari can't connect to server with parental controls on

I have one user with admin rights and one user plus guest with parental controls turned on. Recently when parental controls are turned on, I get 'safari can't connect to server' error. When I turn parental controls off again I can connect to the internet again. Why is this?

    Hi and welcome....
Unfortunately, Parental Controls can only be enabled on a non admin account.
See if there's a proxy set up for Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click "Change Settings" next to: Proxies.
That will launch System Preferences / Network - Proxies.
If there are any boxes checked under: Select a protocol to configure, deselect the box then click Ok.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
See if Safari can connect in a parental controlled user account.

  • FaceTime will not connect (but rings) for parental controlled user.

I have a parental controlled user setup on a brand new mac mini running Lion. When initiating or receiving a FaceTime call as the parental controlled user, the connection rings, but after trying to connect the call fails. When the mac mini user is a normal user (not parental controlled), it works fine. The parental controlled user has their own apple id / email address. Under the parental controls it is set to unlimited web access.
Any help here would be great.
    Thanks,
    David.

  • Turning off parental control

Parental control will not let me connect to various websites. (eg. Met Office) I've updated my DNS TWICE and turned Parental Control off TWICE, but it still won't connect me, because of Parental Control! Received an email from BT saying that I have CANCALLED Parental Controls, then I try to get a regularly used website and still get this message "
You're seeing this page because BT Parental Controls is active and you are attempting to connect to a DNS server outside of our network.
You may have selected a different server in your network settings or installed an application that uses an alternative service."
Ready for throwing the computer out of the window!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You will have to actually uninstall Parental controls, and not just turn them off.
Also make sure that all devices get their DNS setting automatically, or make sure the DNS setiings are set to 192.168.1.254.

  • Parental controls interferes with iTunes Store access

My daughter's account is set up to use Parental Controls. Under Tiger, she had no problems getting to the iTunes Store. Under Leopard, we get an "unknown error" (with a "-4" in it somewhere), every time.
If I turn off the parental controls for her account, she can get to the iTunes Store. If I turn them back on, she can't.
(On a related note, toggling Parental Controls seems to lose all of your settings... That is, the workaround to my iTunes Store problem might be to disable Parental Controls when she wants to access the store). That's a pain, though, because all of the "allow" / "don't allow" settings that I've established are lost, every time.)
She's got access to iTunes (and iTunes Helper, whatever that is), so it's not like I've prevented her from using iTunes. Again, worked fine under Tiger.
Is there a permanent fix to this?

    Same problem.
Here is a workaround that works for me: I go to the iTunes Music Store and enter a search term in the search box, "The Monkees," for example. The search takes me to the Search Results screen. From there, if I click on an Artist or Album link, to "escape" out of the Search Results screen, the navigation path at the top has the home icon, music, genre, etc. buttons available. If I click on the home button, I get the long wait followed by an error. But I can click on the next level below, Music, and get pretty much everywhere in the music store.
And I've also temporarily turned off parental controls to debug this and lost all the allow / deny settings... very annoying.
The most difficult thing about trying to solve the parental control problems is that it is not always clear what is causing the problem. For example, amazon.com works fine when allowed, but once you go into secure mode most parts of the site fail to load properly, no matter what you add to the allow list in parental controls. Something about parental controls "fails to establish a secure connection." Turning off parental controls fixes the problems, but then you have no parental controls.

  • Safari can't establish secure connection in parental controls managed user account

    Hi,
Safari can't establish any secure connection in parental controls managed user account. Normal web sites open OK, but secure connections, like Gmail which requires https doesn't work. This is what I get instead:
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false& continue=http%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3Fui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl&bsv=llya694 le36z&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&from=login” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.google.com”.
Any ideas how to overcome this?

Do you have anti virus software installed, or Peer Guardian?
"https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. For this reason, encrypted websites must be explicitly allowed using the Always Allow list. Encrypted websites that are not on the Always Allow list will be blocked by the automatic Internet content filter."

  • Safari can't connect to server on only some applications (lumosity) and only under parental controls

Under parental controls with the "try to limit access to adult sites" selected, some sites (such as lumosity) give me the can't connect to Safari screen,

    Other websites work just fine.
When I use my own login, all of the sites work just fine.

    Hey Nana1048,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing connectivity issues with your iPad 2. The following resource may help to resolve your issue:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    1. Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
    2. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
    3. Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    4. Restart your iOS device.
    5. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    6. Tap  and Forget this Network.
    7. Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
    8. Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
    9. Update your device to the latest version of software.
    10. Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Wi-Fi disconnects or signal strength is less than expected
    1. Move closer to the Wi-Fi router (access point).
    2. Check for sources of potential interference.
    3. Remove any case, stand, or other accessories from your iOS device and see if signal strength improves.
    4. Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including
              - previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
              - recently used Bluetooth accessories
              - VPN and APN settings
    Thanks,

  • Connecting to Http Proxy on Lion under parental controls

    Hello.
Ive been looking for a couple of days for a fix for this. The issue im having is running parental controls on an account (any settings enabled/disabled, even with no web access permissions) and using a proxy (http, https, ftp) to connect to the internet. Connected as a standard/administrator user I can connect to the internet fine, but as soon as parental controls are enabled i cannot. I can't even connect to a local address without an error in the browser.
I have tried this on multiple lion computers with the same outcome.
    The error im getting is:
Chrome: is no data received, no server data was sent.Error 324
Firefox is the default connection was reset error
And safari dosen't even give an error just a white screen.
And external programs don't seem to work.
    The computer is 100% uptodate.

Parental controls use an internal proxy which ignores the proxy set in Network Preference.  By making the internal proxy non-executable to the user with parental controls request can be passed to the external proxy.
You can run the following command from Apple Remote Desktop as root (or locally with sudo).
    chmod a-x /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/FamilyControls.framework/Versions/A/Resources/webfilterctl
Note: This also works in 10.8 which has the same problem.

  • Parental Controls - Browsers can not connect to server.

    Hi,
When using a Parental controlled account, the user can not connect to any server when using a web browser. Tried repairing permissions, safe mode, root admin an created new parental controlled account and same results. Tried converting account to standard account and browsers will connect, but when account is converted back to parental controlled the problem returns.
Is there a way to delete the parental controls preference file and where is it located?

  • Enabling Parental Controls creates a cannot connect to serve message Safari

Any time I enable Parental controls in the System Preferences that account gets a message that Safari is unable to connect to the server no matter what URL is selected. All web browsers are checked and unlimited access to websites is allowed. This even happens when I have Guest Account enabled; no internet access. What gives?

    Hi Desperata,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're not able to view web pages in Safari, first reset the program. From the main Safari menu, choose Reset Safari.
I'd recommend choosing "Remove all website data." See this article for an explanation of the other options in the Reset Safari menu:

  • Parental control = lost connection to server

If parental controls are enabled -- even if child's use (for example, in Content) is not actually limited -- why do Safari and Firefox lose connection? Error message is "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at [url]" for accounts that are "managed," that is, for which parental controls are enabled. Firefox works fine for all other accounts whether "standard" or "admin." This also happens in Safari: "can't connect to the server "livepage.apple.com"."

The FTP server returned the following error message: 'com.sap.aii.adapter.file.ftp.FTPEx: 421 Timeout (120 seconds): closing control connection.'. For details, contact your FTP server vendor
    Thanks,

    Hi venkata,
I think this time out setting is at the FTP side and not in your control.
The setting on the FTP site may be in such a way that it will disconnect any ftp request which is taking more than 120 seconds(In your case).
As specified in the log, contact your FTP administrator to increase this parameter.
    Regards,
    Ravi
