Connection to a remote speaker almost impossible

I’ve just bought an Airport Express few weeks ago and it’s still almost impossible to get a reliable connection to the remote speaker from within iTune 5.01.
The Airport Express is connected as remote station to an Airport Extreme base using WDS.
When I’m trying to connect to the remote speaker, I’m getting the message that the remote speaker is already used by another computer. Since I’m also using a PowerMac G4 (running 10.3.9 and iTunes 5.01) at home, I’ve switched off this machine, switched off and on the Airport Express : most of the time I’m getting the error message.
After this few weeks period, I would say that rate of successful connections is less than 10 %. I wasn’t able to determine why the connection is suddenly working…
Any clues are welcome
Cheers
Pascal

But the issue is I need to connect to the remote
server and not my local machine. What am I doing wrong
in the connection string? What you are doing wrong is assuming you can use a "remote DSN". If you're connecting to a DSN it has to be on your own machine. You may be able to make that DSN refer to a database on another machine, though.
You also mentioned a "remote server". You're also making a mistake in assuming such a thing exists. Other databases have servers but Access doesn't.
The simplest thing to do, probably, would be to map a drive to the machine where your remote Access database is located and then to use a DSN-less connection to it. I don't recall just how you do that but if the forum search facility is working then you should be able to find out, as that information is posted here frequently. Or you could use Google, and it will usually give you links to this forum.

I can't get my itunes to connect to the remote speakers via airport express anymore  - I did not change any settings - but did update iTunes to 10.2.2 and now things are not working and I get his message - "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker “Living Room”. The network connection failed."
Does anybody have a fix for this problem?
    thanks

Same problem for me. Ever since I upgraded to 10.6.3 and iTunes 9.1, about once per week I'll get the error message when trying to get iTunes/Airtunes to connect to my older Airport Express (running firmware 6.3) "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker <insert speaker name here>. The network connection failed." (No error codes are given.)
Airport Utility sees the offending Airport Express just fine (and there's a green light on said AE).
Curiously, a newer AE-n, elsewhere in the house (running firmware 7.4.2) does NOT exhibit this problem.
Simply restarting the offending AE does NOT clear the problem. Restarting the main router - a Time Capsule DOES clear the problem. Alternatively, toggling off the Airtunes functionality on the offending AE, restarting it, then toggling Airtunes back on, and finally restarting it DOES clear the problem (as an alternate to restarting the router). No matter how the problem is cleared, it returns within a week. It's frustrating that the problem cannot be recreated immediately.
Probably not relevant, but the computer on which I'm running iTunes (a Mac Mini) is connected to my TC via ethernet, not wirelessly.
I've tried the suggestion of disabling ipv6. No effect.
I fear the only solution will be to scrap my older Airport Express and replace it with a newer n-model. But before I resign myself to the $100 fix, any more ideas?

  • An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "...AirportExpress

An error occurred (-15000). still getting connection error when trying to connect to remote speakers since upgrading to iTunes 10. anyone else having this issue?

I have this issue now and then. Everything will work fine, and then one day, nothing connects. Since my home has multiple computers and iPhones and one APE, I have narrowed it down to one MacBook Pro, running 10.6. Everything else works fine. It could be that there is something wrong with the computer, but since it works sometimes, I don't think that is it. My hunch, after trying everything that everyone has recommended and finding that things automatically start/stop working at will, is that it has to do with the DHCP numbers assigned to the computer from the ISP. If those are getting reassigned, iTunes can no longer communicate. For example, it can no longer connect to my APE speakers. It can no longer connect to the Remote on my iPhone. It can no longer do Home Sharing with the other computer. I have been trying to figure it out for a year. Why it works one day and not the next is beyond me.

  • ITunes - An Error occured while connecting to the remote speaker. (-15000)

I have been using airportexpress for the last 9 months with no problem. I used to use Windows Vista (32bit) to play itunes music and stream the music to the airportexpress which connects to my living room AV system.
Couple of days ago, I rebuilt my machine now running Win7 (64bit). Since then, I am not able to stream the audio to the airport express. Whenever I select the remote speakers, wait for about 30 secs and I get this error : An error occurred while connecting to the remote speakers "livingroom". An unknown error occured (-150000).
Does anyone experience this ? From the same machine, I am able to connect to the airport express using the airport utility. Wireless is working fine. I just not able to stream my music to it.

moehadi, Welcome to the discussion area!
This is typically caused by a firewall or Internet security software running on your PC. Please read the comments in "Error -3256 or -15000 when streaming to AirPort Express base stations using iTunes".
Also there is "iTunes 8: Unknown error -15000 when attempting to stream music to devices connected to AirPort Express with AirTunes".

  • Airport Express error (-15006) when trying to connect as a remote speaker?

I use an Airport Express (g) to port music to my stereo.
Recently it stopped working and although the green light is on (ie connected) when I try and connect iTunes to it gives me the waiting bar and then error (-15006).
I've tried doing a 'hard' reset on the unit and reconfiguring it but no change.
Is it broken or is this a software/setup issue?
    Thanks,
    Dan.

After reading dozens of reports about this issue in this forum I found my solution and I want to thank everybody for their contribution. Here is what I did. I think this can help many of you that are having your airport not recognized by airport utility:
1- connect your aiport express to your computer with an ethernet cable
2- while mantaining your aiport express connected to your computer by this cable do a factory reset (see apple support to learn how to do this simple procedure)
3- at this time you will see a steady ambar light in your airport express
4- launch airport utility and wait 30-50 seconds
5- airport express should now appear with factory settings ready to be setup
If you have an Airport Extreme base station and want your airport express joining your network follow the above procedure and TURN ON airport in your Mac in order you can access your airport express through airport utility.
I hope this help you. My airport express (n) is working again with firmware 7.4.1 that many people claim to have a bug as is air tunes. My house is a 2 story building and this airport is on the top floor where te network could be problematic but it is not.

    Jose

  • An Error occured while connecting to the remote speaker

    The Network connection was reset.
Anyone got any suggestions why neither of my 2 laptops will connect to Airtunes?
    Both Wireless of course.
One of them used to but the harddrive crashed and I had to put in a new one, new Xp etc, and now it won't connect either.
    Fix me!
Airtunes has been up and running for about 4 months now.

Most common cause for iTunes failing to "see" or connect to an Airport Express - a firewall running on the PC. This includes any of the following:
    - the firewall built into Windows XP
    - third-party firewall or "internet protection" software you might have installed yourself
    - VPN client software, which often installs its own firewall

  • Remote Speaker (AirTunes) Error - "the network connection failed"

I am getting a strange error message when I try to stream music through an AirTunes remote speaker. iTunes tells me this:
*An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "NN". The network connection failed.*
I can't say what has changed for this error to occur. Last time I used the system it worked fine, now it doesn't. I do know I have upgraded iTunes a couple of times since, though.
I am connecting to an 802.11g AirPort Express running firmware version 6.3.
Both our computers (MacBook & MacBook Pro) run Mac OS version 10.5.8.
In my system, the AirPort Express functions solely as a wireless speaker client, as the WLAN network itself is based around an 802.11n AirPort Extreme.
The AP shows a green light, and reports no problems in AP Utility.
When I change the device's "iTunes Speaker Password" setting in AP Utility, iTunes in both our computers immediately reflect the change, so apparently the various parts in the system do speak to one another just fine. They just can't transmit music, for some reason...
Anyone have any idea what might be going on, here?

I have a similar problem. I use AE(g) with a Powerbook G4 and always get this error, which kind of bugs me, since all the settings appear to be correct. Unlike you though, I didn't make it work, not a single time — closing lid, opening and closing iTunes, resetting AE, yet no luck. Tried it all only with current versions of software.
However, the AE does sense when I unplug the speakers, since it first says "no speakers found", and then "the network connection failed". Strange is that the error has no number, nor does Console provide any clues. Sometimes it is pretty annoying when OS X just says "error". What error, where, why... Feels like good ol' windows times.

  • -3256 Error - Unknown error, cannot connect to remote speaker

I recently bought time capsule and have set that up as a base station. The input to time capsule is the linksys modem + router. I have disabled the linksys router capabilities and am only using that as a modem. When i connect airport express to the time capsule network, i get a error message stating -3256. Unknown error cannot connect to the remote speaker. Before time capsule, linksys network was able to play airtunes, but time capsule is not able to. I have disabled the firewall on both time capsule and linksys.

It might actually be the firewall on your mac rather than the other hardware. I mysteriously started getting this same error when trying to use the Multiple Speakers function with AirTunes (had worked perfectly for over a year). I modified the Security/Firewall settings in System Preferences and it started working again, no error: I simply added iTunes to the "specific services" firewall list to allow incoming connections. Of course the firewall is set up quite differently in 10.4.x.
You'd think that checking "look for remote speakers" in iTunes preferences would take care of this for you, or prompt you to make the changes yourself (I remember getting OS messages that used to say "if you want to do such-and-such, make sure you open port xxxx") but apparently not!
I also read somewhere that checking "share my library" in iTunes prefs can help with this sometimes, but I can't verify that - I already had it checked; it was the OS firewall tweak that worked for me.

  • Intermittent Remote Speaker

I have a MAC and two PC computers that run iTunes 7.0.2. Each computer (one at a time) has been playing to two remote speaker systems in the house just fine for some time.
Just recently (possibly after upgrading to 7.0.2), even though both remote speaker systems and computer speakers are seen by iTunes in all computers, if I try to play more than one remote system (Airport Express for each remote) from the three selections see by the each computer(computer, living room, tv room), the two remote selections won't play. I can select "computer speaker" only by itself or only one remote at a time. If I select more than one remote at a time, or a remote and computer, I get, "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "xxx". An unknown error occurred (-3256).
    Any ideas what's going on?
iMac and PC   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   PC's have Windows XP and Professional

This is a firewall issue most likely. I was having the same problem. And I went to my firewall (norton internet security) and disabled it, and it worked.
Then I went in and gave iTunes the permission to do everything and it worked fine as well.
There is an apple support ticket that almost covers it, but brings up UDP as the culprit.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303157
However, my firewall had allowed UDP, so it might be something else that the firewall is blocking.

  • Cant connect AppleTV as remote speakers

AppleTV will no longer connect as a remote speaker from iTunes. I always get the following even though my iMac and AppleTV are active on my home network: An error occured while connecting to the remote speaker "Apple TV". An unknown error occurred (-15000).

This is really frustrating... Why does Apple refuse to acknowledge this issue as it appears to be a problem for many!
I'm in the same boat with the following config:
MacBook Pro (Early '08) <-wireless-> AirPort Extreme 802.11g <-ethernet-> ATV
Why is it that ever since late December, I've been unable to stream from iTunes to my ATV?
Firmware on everything is the latest, using iTunes 8.0.2, AppleTV 2.3, OSX 10.5.6, I've set the firewall to "Set access..." and allowed iTunes, I've tried the iPv6 on/off trick, yet NOTHING works!
Is this a 10.5.6 issue? I noticed that it tanked right around the 12/15/08 release date...

  • Remote speaker error - 3256

I continue to get the following error message every time I try to use remote speakers:
"An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker '**'. An unknown error occurred (-3256)."
This first started happening about a month ago when I upgraded to iTunes 8.01. Before then, I had three years of trouble-free Air Tunes use.
I have since upgraded to iTunes 8.02 but the problem persists.
I use a PowerBook G4, Time Capsule, Airport Extreme Base Station and five Airport Expresses (all 802.11 b/g variety). All software/firmware is bang up to date on all equipment.
I have tried the "Solutions for AirTunes Issues in iTunes 8
Posted By : Roy B -- 10-Sep-2008 12:24" at the top of this discussion forum to no avail. I have also followed all of the advice on this forum from other users to no avail.
I have tried Apple Support who indicated that they knew there was a problem for older portables such as the PowerBook G4 that should be addressed in the iTune 8.02 upgrade. It too has failed.
Does anyone else out there continue to have this problem?
Does anyone have any other solutions than those already posted?

I have tried everything mentioned on this thread and others I've found online. My network sees the Airtunes. iTunes recognizes the remote speakers through Airtunes. I've tried it with wireless and ethernet, not that it would make a difference, just to rule out wireless issues. Neither worked.
    My setup:
    G5 Dual 2.3 GHz
    V 10.5.6
    Airtunes 6.3
    iTunes 8.0.2
    Airport Utility 5.3.2
    I've tried enabling / disabling / re-enabling iPv6 > no go
I've tried changing firewall settings from "allow all incoming connections" to "Set for specific..."
I've restarted iTunes after each change made.
Sometimes I get the -3256 error mentioned above, other times I don't.
    Any other ideas? Please?

  • Itunes remote speaker using Airport Express and Extreme

I have purchased an Airport Extreme and Airport Express, so I can listen Itunes music on my stereo system. For some reason, there is simply no remote speaker selection button on the bottom right of the Itunes windows. Does it has to do with the fact that I am using an old Mac OS X?
My Macmini has no airport card, so I connected the ethernet to the Airport extreme, and plugged the Airport express few feet from the base. Nothing but an orange tilting light comes out of the little box. I can surf the net perfectly but the Itunes is ignoring all my investment on the couple of Airport boxes i purchase...What I am doing wrong?

Yes, I thought that purchasing the Airport extreme as
the ethernet interfase directly connected to the
MacMini, was almost the same as having the airport
card inside the Mini. Where did I get lost?? I have
the extreme directly to the mini, and an express
plugged somewhere close and nothing happens...
The problem is that the mini can only stream iTunes to an Airport Express via Airport. While you have connected it to an Airport basestation, as far as the mini is concerned, it is working via ethernet because that's how the data is leaving the system. It doesn't have an Airport card, thus it can't stream iTunes content to an Airport Express.
