Connection to Oracle 8i personal default DB
Hi I am trying to connect to the default database on my laptop whcih is running Oracle 8i personal.
I use
connection = DriverManager.getConnection(
"jdbc:oracle:oci8:@", user, password);
for my connection, but get the following error:
Failed to establish connection java.lang.unsatisfiedLinkError no ocijdbc9 in java.library.path
Does anyone know how to solve this?
Cheers
Andreas
You don't have the Oracle Client software installed :-)
If you don't want to use it, you need to specify a different protocol which does not need the client software:
jdbc:oracle:thin:@(hostname):1421:(sid)

How to connect to Oracle 8i Personal Edition from another app like TOAD?
I downloaded Oracle 8.1.7 Personal Edition; and the download went like a breeze.
I installed Oracle and can connect to the database using SQL*Plus without specifying Host Name.
I am very much familiar with TOAD (Tool for Oracle Application Developer). But I am unable to connect to Oracle 8.1.7 Personal Edition database from TOAD. I get a ORA-12541: TNS:no listener error when I give the global database name as the database name.
Can anybody help me? Your help will be appreciated very much.SQL*PLus does not use the listener to connect to Oracle8i Personal Edition. That is why you are able to connect with SQL*Plus and not TOAD when the listener is not started.

Oracle shared server default connection
We are currently trying to use shared server on an Oracle 11.1.0.7 standard edition database.
We don't have any problem regarding parameters or performance yet. We can connect either with dedicated or shared connection.
Our problem or issue is with tnsnames.ora.
trdb =
(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = X.X.X.X)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = orcl)
We do not specify if this connection is shared neither dedicated. Connection defaults to dedicated and we would like to force that users connect to a shared server connection.
It would be really usefull to avoid having to go client by client on remote sites. We do no have any centralized management tool to change the file (not on remote sites).
We could, of course make the application to distribute a new file, but since every client is unique, it could be risky.Try to use SERVICE_NAME instead of SID in tnsnames.ora and make sure this service is mapped to a dispatcher in database init. file.
Example with 11.2.0.1:
1. DISPATCHERS parameter
SQL> show parameter dispatchers
NAME TYPE VALUE
dispatchers string (PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=DB112XDB)
max_dispatchers integer2. TNSNAMES.ORA:
$cat tnsnames.ora
DB112 =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = lx01.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = DB112XDB)
)3. Test with SQL*Plus:
sqlplus system/xxx@DB112 @tss

Connecting two machines using personal oracle
I have a personal oracle 8.0.4 installed on my machine, I tried to connect another machine to use the same database, as a networking both machines were able to access the other but upon trying to connect to oracle I always get TNS message.
Would you please advise.Make sure that your listener is started along with the oracle version. use lsnrctl command to start view listener status
lsnrctl> status tells status
> start to start
> stop to stop listener
now you need to configure the tnsnames thru net8 easy config or manually. it works
good luck

my question is a bit outdated but please do not mind me because i am just new user...
i have install oracle 9i personal database on my local computer with windows xp professional. now when i start sql plus it request for the user name and password and host string.. what the user name and password.? when i enter the default user name sysman and password oem_temp it gives up an error ORA-12560 TNS protocol adapter error.
same is with Enterprize Manager Console. giving option of standalone and the other... what i should do... is there any configuration required for the first time we install oracle.... or i need to connect to a server... please guide me ...
thanksHi..
While installation of oracle you would have entred the password for the sys user, which you can use for login.
username:- sys as sysdba
password:- that you provided
For ORA-12560 TNS protocol adapter error, Start --> Run --> services.msc --> OracleserviceSID --> start it.
when i enter the default user name sysman and password oem_tempAre you sure its a 9i database.You don't have SYSMAN user by default in 9i, its only from 10g database where SYSMAN user has SYSAUX tablespace as the default one.

Issue Connecting from Oracle Business Component Browser - adf-config.xml
There are similar posts in the forum to this, but I wasn't able to glean from them what I should do.
Essentially, I tried Connecting by:
right clicking on a node under a Model project, and selected TEST.
When the Oracle Business Component Browser - Connect Dialog window opened, I clicked CONNECT.The Oracle Business Component Browser (Local) seems to have opened fine, but in the message log I see this:

matt.techHi,
the adf-config.xaml file is not created by default and not needed by default. you need this to define custom skins or ADF Security.
For an example of adfs-config.xml doe skins see SRDemo sample app

First Login to Oracle 9i Personal SQL Plus after installation
I downloaded the Opacle 9i for Windows NT/2000/XP,3 ZIP
fiels andI extracted them into 3 special folders disk1,
disk2 and disk3 according the instructions.Also I
installed the JRE which is required for that.After the
installation of Oracle 9,when I wanted to use the SQL Plus
I could not do it because I had no the first login User
Name and Password.
For example,in Oracle 7 Personal for Windows 95 and in
Oracle 8i Personal for Windows 98,the first login User
Name is "scott" and the Password is "tiger".
I shall be great thankfull to you if you will let me know
how to perform the first login to the SQL Plus of Oracle
9i (User Name and Password).
With Great Respect
Menahem Sharonin oracle9i all default users account are lock by default. so if you want to connect
first when you open sqlplus in user name type "/nolog"
sqlplus will open with no connection then issue the command.
conn / as sysdba
alter user scott account unlock;
conn scott/tiger
that is the procedure -

- is Oracle really running on the default port, 1521
- is the installation SID really "orcl"
2) lots of possibilities, but only a couple are likely
- is TCP/IP configured and running on your host
- is there a persoanl firewall rpduct running? perhaps it's blocking the connection
3) Is Oracle running?
Is the listener running? -
Excel-2007 cannot connect to Oracle ODBC data source, Control Panel can.
<p>
I cannot make an ODBC connection from Exce-2007 to Oracle work. I am an expert Excel and VBA user (since 1994) and I have frequently used Excel to access ODBC databases, including Oracle (I have done this with Excel-2003 both with worksheet queries and have written VBA ADO-connection routines). And even though in Excel-2007 a worksheet ODBC query is supposed to be easier to create than in previous version of Excel, my connection fails. Any suggestions and all help are welcome and much appreciated.
DETAILS
</p>
<p>
1) <strong>What is my system?</strong> I am using Excel-2007 on Windows Vista x64 and Oracle server v.11g on my computer (all this is on my computer, no network issues).
2)<strong> Why use Excel with Oracle at all?</strong> I use Excel-2007 to access Oracle rather than Access-2007 (or any other application like TOAD, etc.) because I do engineering calculations with the data stored in Oracle. These calculations are easier done in Excel (I suppose that one alternative to this could be to use some sql or Access to get the data from the database, then store it as plain vanilla CSV file, then open this file in Excel, then do the math (the math involves complex optimisation algorithms), then save the results as CSV, then use some sql or Access to put the data back into the database. Howwever this does not strike me as a quick or neat solution. And after all Excel has been designed to access ODBC databases, so why not use it?)
3) <strong>What do I do in Excel-2007 that won't work?</strong> I create an ODBC link to Oracle that does not work. In Excel-2007 this is straightforward:
</p>
<ul>
<li>define an ODBC connection (Data tab --> From other sources --> From data connection wizard);</li>
<li>define a query on the worksheet -- that's it, this is all!</li>
</ul>
<p>
I start with creating an ODBC connection:
a) I choose an ODBC data source type: <strong><em>ODBC DSN</em></strong>
b) Excel-2007 displays the list of the available ODBC data sources. I see in it <strong><em>my Oracle database name</em></strong> and I select it.
c) Excel-2007 displays the Data Link Properties:
- the "Provider" has a list of the OLE DB drivers with preselected "<strong><em>Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers</em></strong>". I keep this default selection.
- the "Connection" tab has a connection string "<strong><em>DSN=<my database name></em></strong>" which I keep, it also has fields for the <strong><em>user name</em></strong> and the <strong><em>password</em></strong>, which I fill with the correct credentials.
- Finally there is a button "Test Connection", which when I click produces the following error message:
<strong><font color="#ff0000">"Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider.</font></strong><strong><br />
</strong><strong><font color="#ff0000">Unespecified error"</font></strong><strong>
</strong>
4) <strong>Additional food for thought:</strong>
a) In the above walk-through the only data, which I type, are the user name and password, everything else is selected from lists offered by Excel-2007, hence any possibility of typos being the cause of the problem can safely be discarded.
b) I can test the ODBC driver in the Control Panel and it shows that it can connect to the Oracle database:
- in <strong><em>Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Data Sources (ODBC)</em></strong> on the "User DSN" tab I can see the list of the available ODBC data sources (same list as in Excel-2007, point 3b above) with the name of my database in it;
- selecting the name of my database from the list of the sources and clicking "Configure" button opens a tab with <strong><em>Data Source Name</em></strong> (same as in Excel-2007), TNS Service Name and User ID. I enter <strong><em><user name>/<password></em></strong> and click "Test Connection" button. A message "<strong><em>Connection successful</em></strong>" appears (just for a test I enter <u>incorrect user credentials</u> and "<strong><em>Unable to connect</em></strong>" message appears)
BOTTOM LINE
</p>
<p>
The procedure for using an ODBC connection from Excel is very simple, in the past I have created and used such connections numerous times with Excel-2003 and earlier on Win-XP and earlier. But now on Excel-2007 and Vista-x64 I cannot make it work.
Also, testing an ODBC connection driver is really easy and simple to be done in the Control Panel. There testing the same ODBC connection, which fails in Excel-2007, results in success.
I am frustrated by the simplicity of the problem and yet the persistant error. I have lost now two full days in failed attempts to make the simple procedure work and in searching the internet for answers.
All help is highly appreciated <img class="emoticon" src="images/emoticons/happy.gif" border="0" alt="" width="16" height="16" />,
Plamen
</p>Did you find the solution to your problem?
If not, I think I may know.
Excel 2007 is a 32-bit application.
When installing 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment, the "default" location is:
C:\Program files (x86)\...
Excel then launches from this location.
However, when it connects to Oracle and passes the name of the calling program, Oracle attempts to "interpret" the value of (x86) as if
the value within the parenthesis are being passed as a reference. Of course, iOracle doesn't find anything, so the result is (),
and then it cannot return the connection info back to the calling application.
I corrected it by installing Excel in C:\Program Files\, and once launched from that location, it works the same as on the 32-bit machines.
However, at my location, they are FORCING Excel to be installed in the(x86) location.
What I'm trying to discover now is:
Is it possible to flag Oracle to NOT process the embedded variables?
Or, is it possible to assign a variable in Oracle such that x86 = "(x86)", so that the end result is viable?
Have you had any luck with your installation?
thanks,

Forms 6.0/Oracle 8i Personal
I have Forms 6.0 installed from Developer 6.0 CD on a Windows 98 desktop. I recently installed Oracle 8i Personal Edition. I had to install 8i in a new Oracle Home because the UOI is not compatible with the installer used for Developer 6.0. I am now trying to connect to the Personal Oracle 8i database from the Forms Builder 6.0 . Is this possible? I have tried editing the tnsnames.ora file in the oracle home where the Forms 6.0 lives, but haven't had any luck.
It is easier to use developer 6i. 8i and 6i can find each other without having to change anything in the listeners or tns.names.
Greetings Huub Bos

Error creating connection to Oracle Application Server 10g(10.1.3)
Hey
Im using Oracle JDeveloper 10g and when i tried to create a new connection to Oracle App Server 10.1.3 and test it, I received the following error message
Error while parsing OPMN dump in XML format: XML Parse Exception: tag=[null] Ran out of data, content []
I have no idea what this means and any help on this will be highly appreciated. Thank you
ArjhunOK, in short:
Cause: Wrong OPMN request port used to configure the connection (third step of "Create Application Server Connection" wizard). You might have kept the default (6003) but your OPMN is configured with different request port.
Solution: Check $ORACLE_HOME/opmn/conf/opmn.xml file and look for entry like this:
<port local="6140" remote="6240" request="6040" />
Create the connection using OPMN request port that is set in opmn.xml file.
Thanks

I have looked up the errors on Oracle forums and could not get any valuable help anywhere.
Can someone kindly help out where I am going wrong?
Thanks,
Ram.Hello kgronau,
Thank You very much for your recommendations. I removed the parameter HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = 255.
I added HS_FDS_FETCH_ROWS=1 and also HS_NLS_NCHAR = UCS2
Tested my sql statement, which yielded the result as follows:
SQL> select * from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink;
select * from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
㈵″㠵6
SO I thought I would give a try of removing the line HS_NLS_NCHAR = UCS2
and again tested my sql statement and it worked like a charm!!!!
I tested a count(*) and got the results back.
SQL> select count(*) from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink;
COUNT(*)
600
I really appreciate your valuable pointers and help.
Thanks once again!!!

Help needed in connecting to oracle database in unity
Hi,
I have been trying to connect to Oracle database in my codes. I have tried using OdbcConnection and OleDbconnection. But both did not allowed me to connect to the database. The database, testDb, can be accessed using SQL plus as well as the SQL developer. I even tested the connection successful using ODBC data source administrator.
the following is my code for the connection string:
OdbcConnection connectionString = "Driver={Oracle ODBC Driver};Server=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP )(HOST=127.0.0.1)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=Te stDb)));Uid=scott;Pwd=password;";
the error i got is [ODBC Driver Manager] Data Source name not found and no default driver specified.
for the driver parameter, i have tried using "Microsoft ODBC for Oracle". It gives me another error stating that the oracle and network components are not installed.
I even tried "Oracle in OraDb11g_home1" which was specified in the ODBC Data Source Administrator. The same error came out.
Below are some of my specifications:
Platform: Windows 7 64bit
Oracle: Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (64bit)
Unity: 4.1.2
Can someone please help me with this? What is it that i have done wrong?
Thanks.1008737 wrote:

whenever localhost (127.0.0.1) is used, this means that no remote client can ever connect to this system
The problem involves ODBC configuration & has nothing to do with Oracle. -
ODBC connectivity between Oracle 11G and MSSQL Server on Solaris 10
When we were running in 10G, I was able to successfully configure hsodbc using unixODBC and freeTDS to allow for an ODBC connection between Oracle and MSSQL Server.
A few weeks ago we upgraded to 11G and I've been struggling to get the connectivity (dg4odbc) working.
In our 10g environment unixODBC and freeTDS were compiled as 32-bit. I have recompiled them as 64-bit and switched over to an 11G listener and I am getting the following error:

Can anyone help me see what I'm missing?Thank you for your response.
I modified the envs LD_LIBRARY_PATH parameter in my SID_LIST_LISTENERODBC to be:
(ENV="LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/freetds/lib:/usr/local/unixODBC/lib:/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/lib:/
u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/hs/lib")
and bounced the listener, but I'm still getting the same error.
I do not have a lib64 directory in my Freetds installation, but all the files in the lib directory are 64-bit.
Here is a listing of my DG4ODBC init file:
