Connection to the server failed in Gmail

Hi,  I just got a replacement iPhone 5 and I Restored from a Backup after an unfortunate accident.  Almost everything is there in the backup except the passwords (as i did not ecrypted the Backup).
My problem is that now I cannot access My Gmail email, calendar and Contacts.  The phone keeps giving me the error "connection to server failed"!!
Has anybody had this problem before and how was it solved?
Thanks.
Carlos.

Encrpyting or not encrypting the iPhone's backup has no effect on this.
I have never encrypted my iPhone's backup and when transferring the backup for an old iPhone to a new iPhone, the passwords for my email accounts were transferred with the backup.
Have you tried deleting and recreating the Gmail account on your iPhone?

  • HT2480 Ipad mini - exchange email stopped working randomly  Error: "Cannot get mail. The connection to the server failed."

I got an iPad mini over Christmas and have had no issues setting up/managing my email until yesterday. I've had my Exchange email working for almost a month, and yesterday I stopped getting emails and getting the error: "Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server failed."
I tried resetting the device (multiple times) and deleting and recreating the Exchange account (multiple times). This is getting annoying because it worked fine up until yesterday. I'm not aware of any updates to the device, or any changes that have occurred since yesterday.

Due to a screen issue, I had my iPhone 5 replaced two days ago. I repeated deleted the mail account and kept adding it but this did not make any difference. When I attempted to setup the new phone with my Google (Gmail via exchange active sync) accounts I was receiving this same "Cannot Get Mail" error. From what I was able to gather, this problem should be affecting Gmail accounts set up via Exchange. When originally purchasing the phone I was assisted and directed to set up my Gmail account through Exchange because it had the ability to use "ActiveSync" and push not only mail and calendars, but all of my contacts as well. I found this article regarding the subject.
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413283,00.asp
What it came down to was having to delete my Gmail via Exchange account and separate it into two different accounts, a regular gmail account for my mail and a CardDAV account for my contacts.
Here is what I did. Google is changing their system and for new registrars Exchange ActiveSync will not work so you will be unable to register your account via Exchange and have your mail, calenders, and contacts all pushed together. I find this change really annoying. If you are having problems accessing your contacts after deleting the mail account, like I was, here is the work around.
To circumvent this issue go to Setting > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other > Add CardDAV Account: Under server ender google.com, then your email user name and password, then click next to verify the information.
    I hope this helps.

  • Exchange Server Error - The connection to the server failed

Since two days ago, one of my GMAIL accounts on my iPhone stopped receiving emails.  I use Exchange Server, and have been getting the following message: Cannot Get Mail.  The connection to the server failed.
I have tried multiple things as stated over the forum(s) but nothing seems to be working.  This is only affecting one account (the most important one!), while the remaining two GMAIL accounts on the same device are working fine.
Can someone tell me how to fix this problem and continue to receive emails using exchange server?
    Thanks

OK - 5 of us at work, all with iPhone 5's, all 32Gb. 2 of us can sign into Gmail using the Exchange Server with no problems, the other 3 (including me) cannot get emails to push. When set to push it comes up with "cannot get mail the connection to the server failed". (If set to Fetch then it does work) So we deleted all our accounts and the two that could connect with push tried it on our phones that wouldn't to see if it was a Gmail thing but they couldn't connect either - same message. I tried on on of the other phones and hey presto, it works! We are all running the same OS (iOS6.1.2) So it has to be device specific - what is going on here???? !!! Really, really hacking me off now - wish I'd never bought the bloody thing. Rapidly going off Apple...

  • HT4623 I have an IPhone4 S which when using Outlook suddenly displays the following warning: CANNOT GET MAIL.THE CONNECTION TO THE SERVER FAILED

    Hello,
I bought a used Apple IPHONE 4S about 6 weeks ago. For all this past period, it was working beautifully. This morning, I started having poblems with connecting JUST on OUTLOOK or Hotmail and on Microsoft Exchange. All other programs, such as Gmail, Yahoo as well as other apps, such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Facetime, are ALL working properly.
the One problem I am having is when I try to log onto my Outlook ( ex Hotmail) account, I get a window with the following warning:
"CANNOT GET MAIL. THE CONNECTION TO THE SERVER FAILED"
I have done everything to solve it from taking out the card to switching it off to resetting the network to deleting my account to re-starting ..NOTHING worked.
PLEASE can you advise me what to do? The Network server was working great. So what happened and how can i fix it?
    Thank you
    Nina ...

The issue isn't with Apple/iphone or your network.
The issue is with Hotmail, there have been a ton of threads on this already with other user having issues.
You'll have to wait until hotmail resolves the issue.

  • Getting:  "cannot get mail the connection to the server failed"

I have been getting this message -
"cannot get mail the connection to the server failed"
for about a week now. iPhone is 3G,16GB, version 2.1.
When I try to connect to my companies Exchange server.
Was working great. Then all of a sudden this happened.
I have tried from both the 3G Network, companies internal wireless, and my wireless at home, all with same result.
I have several friends who have the same phone and they reported getting the same thing, but theres is more extensive... not able to get to Gmail accounts either...
I have done some research on this, and find that others are getting the errors as well, seems to coinside with some update, I checked with our exchange admin and they have made no changes to the Exchange servers.
We also tried to delete the accounts from the phones, and recreate, no change, still same error.
Anyone know why this is doing this?

We ran windows updates on the mail server a weekend or so before this problem on the 28th. One of the updates was a DNS fix that expanded the dynamic port range dns is using. Problem was, in it’s infinite wisdom, MS allowed this range change to include 2883, the AUTD or active sync port. So we had to do a registry change to exclude the port for Active sync only. • Live Mail (Hotmail) Connot Get Mail The connection to the server failed

So i have a hotmail/live email account(s). the hotmail account is a paid account. I set it up and it works great, then after sometime i get the dreaded Cannot get mail error. I can delete the account and reconfigure it and the sec it checks for mail i get the error message. All my other accounts work: Exchange x 2 and gmail.
I tried a @live.com account and it doesn't give me an error message, it just doesn't show anything in the inbox.
I have an IPAD 2, 32 gig verizon 3g. Same issue regardless of wifi or cellular.. Firmware is 4.3.5 (8l1)
Any help as this is very frustrating.

I to have encountered the same problem.. When i add other adresses via the Windows Live tool in the menu 'E-mail' everything works.
Though with my standard e-mail nothings seems to work.. Always get 'Connection to the server failed'!

  • IMAP fine in Mail; "Connection to the Server Failed" on iPhone?

So on my Mac, I have both GMail (works great on iPhone) and an IMAP account for my work's Exchange server set up.
Both accounts work just fine on my Mac; I don't even need to connect to the VPN on my Mac to read Exchange email via IMAP through Mail.
The problem is that the iPhone gives me the "connection to the server failed" whenever I try to connect on either EDGE or wi-fi to read the IMAP Exchange email. The settings in both Mail and the iPhone are identical.
If I turn on the VPN on the iPhone, I get the same message...but at this point, I'm thinking the VPN on the iPhone is worthless.
Can anyone think of a reason why the iPhone can't connect to IMAP even though the laptop can? I'm wracking my brain here trying to figure this out. The purchase of 2 iPhones for other staff to use depends on me getting this up & running! I can tell you that the others will NOT accept "setting up a Yahoo!/GMail account for forwarding. They want their email coming in & responses going out with the company's headers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

This morning, I was able to fully "unlock" and "open" the correct ports (I believe), and now I'm able to receive email from the IMAP Exchange server. According to the IT guy who's helping me, we opened ports 143 and 25 on the ISA server (firewall), and I'm able to receive. Does this sound right to you?
The only problem now is sending. I cannot send any mail through this work account on the iPhone. Mail just "hangs." I can still send/receive just fine on my iBook Mail account for Exchange (IMAP), but no dice on sending.
The Incoming Mail Server and SMTP/outgoing Server addresses are identical. Works fine on the Mac, but not the iPhone. I do believe the 143 port is now fully open...I think.
Am I still missing something? Thanks for your help!

  • Connection to the server failed appears when synching email through Microsoft Exchange.

The message, 'Connection to the server failed', appears when synching Groupwise email through Microsoft Exchange on my IPhone 4S. A long string of numbers and letters appears where INBOX should be. The downloading 'wheel' keeps spinning, and the battery is drained quickly as a result. I also get numerous no sender emails with the date 12/31/69 that cannot be deleted. Calendars also are not synching. The exact same settings work for my IPad2. The server works for other IPhone users. It is very strange and frustrating.

What device does your husband have?  What email server does he use?
All I can tell you is what Microsoft is saying right now.
If any other email systems (like gmail, yahoo) work on your device, odds are that your device is fine.

  • Mail Connection to the server failed

I cannot connect to my gmail on my iPad.  It says connection to the server failed.

Cannot get mail the connection to the server failed

  • ""Connection to the server failed" on Iphone - but which one?

When I open the default Mail App on my iPhone 4S I get the error "Cannot Get Mail - the connection to the server failed". OK, but which one? I have six email accounts (all of which have worked at one time) so  which server is not connecting? It'd be nice if IOS told me! Any solution, please?

I may have solved the problem myself, only to find another one.
If I tap each of the accounts in turn, I find that it's the 'Exchange' one that's failing. trouble is, I can't recall what this does, or why I set itup, as i don't use MS Exchange. I suspect it's connected with syncing to either Outlook.com or Gmail, but I'm not sure.
BTW, I still think the error message should say which account is generating the error - Apple stuff is supposed to be easy and intuitive, and this isn't!

  • I am having a problem accessing my Yahoo email account.  It keeps saying, cannot get mail, the connection to the server failed.  Then I put my email in settings and it works but this happens constantly.  Anyone having this problem?

My Yahoo email asks me daily for my email password or says the connection to the server failed.  Is anyone having this problem currently?  I noticed old messages in chat mentioned the same problem.  I get into my Yahoo email fine on my desktop computer for several weeks without re entering a password.  But the IPad does not seem to be connecting daily with Yahoo without putting a password in again.

So, I didn't change anything and now it is working better. I still get the odd error though.
I have a feeling this has something to do with the SSL update Apple released and it was their server side.

    Hi StuNYC,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing an alert message when opening Mail on your iOS devices. Do you have multiple email accounts setup on the devices? Take a look at the article below, it provides suggestions that will resolve most issues that  cause an alert like that to appear in when starting the Mail app.

  • I have been receiving the message ' Cannot get mail. The connection to the server failed' but I am connected to WIFI

I have been receiving the message ' Cannot get mail. The connection to the server failed' but I am connected to WIFI.  I have also been receiving  'Cannot send mail, an error occurred while delivering this message.

Hmm, that's odd JeanEB. The error message referts to the connection to your email server not to cellular data or connection to wi-fi. Go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars> Select your account and type in your password again. If this doesn't resolve it, delete/re-add the email account.
