  • Powerbook had to shut down?! [USB ADSL Modem] .

    Hey,
My Powerbook just arrived today so I decided to try and surf on the net, so I could update my software and other stuff. But I'm having trouble with the preferences for the USB ADSL programn and after I've tried multiple times to connect to the Internet.. I had enough and I pulled the USB (of the modem) out of my laptop. When I do that with my desktop pc (Windows XP) there's no problem at all... My computer just displays that the modem is disconnected, but my Powerbook on the other hand... Stopped working and showed a dark grey box which said (in 4 languages): "You have to restart your laptop now. You can do this etc etc... "
Does anyone know why my Powerbook has to restart when I unplug the modem USB and if it's bad for my Powerbook?! Since I'm new to mac and I don't want to demolish my Powerbook right away....
And if anyone has tips for connecting a USB ADSL modem to my Powerbook... They're welcome
    Powerbook 15" 1.67 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

USB modems do not work with Macs. Get an modem with ethernet. What you experienced is a kernel panic as explained here.

  • 10.3.7 USB ADSL Modem blues

    Hi
I have a SpeedTouch USB ADSL modem that works beautifully under OS 9, but - in spite of downloading the OS X drivers - I can't get the darn thing to connect under OS X...any ideas?
The modem seems happy (all lights up and steady) so the prob seems to be with the mac connecting to my ISP's server...it uses a PPP server connection, so username and pass plus the ini strings are all the info I have...
    HELP!

Just to add my 2 cent's to ADSL Nations excellent advise.
For whatever reason $$$ Many of the UK and Europe Internet Service Providers opt to use USB Modems and as already stated they are and can be a nightmare.
I suggest you 1st get in touch with your Internet Service Provider and see if the will furnish you with a Ethernet ADSL Modem.
If not they are readily available from just about any computer store.
I do suggest you spend a little extra and go for a Multi-port and if you have the need you can also go for a combined Wireless Modem Router.
    Hope this helps

  • Conecting to bt broadband with a USB ADSL Modem :s

Hi! I really know nothing about computers so would be very grateful for some help
My grandma recently bought me a iBook G4 to take to uni with me. I have never used any kind of mac until now so have spent the last few months getting used to it. However, I am still having trouble conecting to the internet. We have a pc at home which uses broadband (a bt voyager 105, USB ADSL modem box thingy) and I have been trying to get my iBook to connect using this but it just doesnt seem to want to work at all! The iBook doesnt seem to realise that the broadband box thingy is plugged in although it is powering the BT modem box, its all very confusing to me. I have tried using the Network Setup Assistant but its got me no where.
I dont know if they are compatible or not or wether I need to get a different connection device or what! Any advice/help would be much appreciated
    Many thanks, Amy

    Hi Amy
    Get a Netgear DG834 http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=DG834
Or if you need wireless Netgear DG834GT http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=DG834GT

  • USB ADSL Modem fails to install on Equium P200-1ED

    I have a Toshiba Equium P200-1ED; Model Number# PSPB5E-003004KS.
I wish to use my Thomson SpeedTouch 330 - a USB bus powered USB ADSL modem - to my Toshiba Equium P200-1ED and have downloaded Release 4.1 of the Windows Vista driver from this web-page:
    http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/codepages/content3.asp?c=7&ProductID=471
... however when the Vista modem driver is executed, the software fails to recognise the Thomson SpeedTouch 330 ADSL modem when the driver software prompts me to connect the modem.
The Thomson SpeedTouch 330 ADSL modem works perfectly when used with my old Toshiba/XP laptop (which was how I downloaded the Vista driver for the modem for the Equium).
    What is wrong?

    Problem Solved!
Un-installing all USB modem device drivers, disconnecting all USB devices and removing all USB host controllers and hubs from the Vista device manager and then rebooting the notebook MADE NO DIFFERENCE.
However when I received the new Thomson SpeedTouch 330 USB ADSL modem drivers on CD-ROM from the manufacturer the modem installed immediately.
I can only assume that there is a problem with the download of Release 4.1 of the Windows Vista driver for the SpeedTouch 330 from this web-page:
    http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/codepages/content3.asp?c=7&ProductID=471
... as the drivers on the CD-ROM from Thomson work - but their web download of the driver for the SpeedTouch does not.
The problem was with the driver for Windows Vista - the laptop and modem now work correctly - as they should have done at the first installation attempt!
    Thanks for your help.

  • USB ADSL Modem Driver for Huawei MT841 for Solaris Express

    Hello Everyone
After initial hiccups of installing Solaris Express in a multiboot system and partition mania,i finally installed Solaris Express on my system.First i installed Developer Edition and upgraded it to Express thinking that Developer Edition doesnt have networking capabilities.
All said and done now i'm unable to access the internet.I'm using Broadband USB ADSL Modem from Huawei, type MT841 with four ethernet ports and one USB port.I dont have ethernet card so i use USB port to connect.
The thing is the modem cd doesnt have a driver for Solaris, but for linux it does.
Where can i find the driver for ADSL modem and how to install it,if i find it?
Is there any alternate way?Expecting a reply(because my last post about multiboot didnt)
    Thanks in advance

  • Networking with USB ADSL modem (and AOL)

    hi there,
just purchased first mac (macbook), and want to get it online.
i have a windows desktop connected to AOL with a USB ADSL modem, and would like my Macbook to be able to be wirelessly connected to the internet.
I understand that having AOL and a USB modem can be problematic in setting up a wireless network.
Can anybody offer me any help, i.e what routers to buy and how to set it up? or even just link me to a similar topic?
    thanks very much in advance.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.83 Ghz, 80Gb, 1Gb mem

    Hi andwhy
as Duane suggest you need to replace the usb modem.
You can get a wireless adsl router for about £50.
USB modem cann be networked unless you use your pc as a gateway. This would involve install router software on the pc, then you would need to get a wireless access point connected to the pc.
So it is much simpler and more cost effective to use a wireless ADSL router.
I would check out the adsl routers you can get from http://www.solwise.co.uk

  • Tiger Upgrade - No recognition of USB ADSL Modem

After upgrading to Tiger I had some problems with my internal hard drive (discussed elsewhere). As a safety measure I decided to make my external drive a boot drive and successfully installed Tiger. During installation I used the option to transfer all of the files and settings etc from my original boot drive and everything appears to have been transferred correctly except that the USB ADSL modem no longer synchronises (only the power light is illuminated on the modem, no DSL light) nor is recognised by 'Internet connect' or the System Preferences 'Network' settings. These show only the internal dial up modem and offer as alternatives only firewire or ethernet (not USB). On inspection, all of the relevant files appear to exist on my external drive (ie seems to be an exact copy of my internal drive) but I cannot connect to the internet. When I restart using my internal boot drive, everything is back to normal and I am immediately able to connect to the internet. I want to erase my internal drive to clear its problems and reinstall Tiger etc, but don't dare to do so until my external drive is functioning properly (including the internet connection). Any ideas?

    Allan,
Many thanks for your help. I did not specifically upgrade the modem driver, but there is not a problem with my internal (normal) boot drive, so the driver seems to be okay. The only problem is that, even though I seem to have an identical set of software on my external boot drive, I cannot get to synchronise the modem (no DSL light) when running on the external drive.
However, all this will cease to be a problem once I connect my new router using ethernet. Unfortunately, I do not have any instructions on connecting using ethernet and have not used ethernet before. I uderstand that it is important to do things in the correct sequence, but do not know what that sequence is. I do know the connection code and password for my current ISP, but as they are not the suppliers of the router, they may not be able to guide me on the connection sequence. Are you able to help?

  • Connect MTNL ADSL Modem to Airport Extreme

    Hey All,
I have a MTNL ADSL WIRELESS MODEM ROUTER. The range from that router is not great and therefore planning to get another router (adsl or non) and thus make use the connectivity to the maximum. My problem is that in my house i do not get good connectivity due to concrete walls.
i want to buy AIRPORT EXTREME (N-dualband) because i can then connect my mac, ipad and iphones seamlessly and also create a NAS with a HDD attached to Extreme via USB.  I want to use the airport extreme to connect to the MNTL WIRELESS ROUTER  and extend the network with connecting the LAN cable to the MTNL MODEM ROUTER .I have read that  i need to work around some techincal aspecs for this (DHCP, PPPoE, reconfiguring IP, etc.). I am not a pro at all this therefore need a simple solution. Please do advice me on how to go about this procedure as i am really confused about this whole thing.
    What i need is :
MTNL Modem Router + Connect Airport Extreme, so that i can use the capabilites of the Airport Extreme rather then the MTnl rOUTER.
WOULD REQUEST AN URGENT HELP ON THIS BECAUSE I STILL HAVE NOT BOUGHT THE AIRPORT EXTREME AND IF THE SOLUTION COMES ACROSS THEN WILL BUY IT. OTHERWISE WOULD HAVE TO GO WITH SOMEONE ELSE (WHICH I DONT WANT TO).

Sorry, but I cannot tell from the information in your post what it is that you want to do.
You mention both an AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme in your post. Will the AirPort Extreme connect to the modem/router using an Ethernet connection and provide a wireless network that the AirPort Express will extend?
If yes, how will the AirPort Express "extend" the signal from the AirPort Extreme?  Will it connect using wireless?.....or.....Will it connect using an Ethernet cable connection?

have you searched the forums? There are a bunch of threads on the ath9k module not working correctly with the latest kernel.
That's why it works in the live cd environment but stops working once you update and login to your actual installation.

  • USB ADSL Modem and Airport Extreme?

I have an ADSL modem that I use to connect my Powerbook, using a USB connection. I have now got an Airport Extreme Base Station. I have only managed to connect to my ADSL modem directly to my computer (sitting on an uncomfortable floor) if I want to use broadband; OR connect wirelessly to the internet with Airport but using the dial-up phone line.
Main Q: How do I connect to broad band wirelessly?
Q1: Do I need to buy an ADSL modem with an ethernet port connection to connect into the base station
Q2: if so, which one should i get?
    OR
Q3: Can the USB port on the base station be used with my current ADSL modem?
Q4: Am I asking the impossible or missing something?
Sorry if I haven't used correct language, as I am still new to all this!

You will need a new ethernet equipped modem to connect to any router, either Apple's or another manufacturer. USB modems cannot be networked. There are adsl modem/wireless router combos, or you can get an ethernet adsl modem and connect it to any wireless router, or ethernet router with an attached wireless access point.
Q1: Do I need to buy an ADSL modem with an ethernet
port connection to connect into the base station
    Yes.
Q2: if so, which one should i get?
These guys provide excellent Mac support, including AirPort:

Q3: Can the USB port on the base station be used with
    my current ADSL modem?
    Definitely not.
Q4: Am I asking the impossible or missing something?
If you intend on trying to network using a usb modem, you are asking the impossible. Wireless networking is easy, given the right kit.

  • USB ADSL Modem Driver Needed?

    Hello Everyone
    I have multiboot system with
    1.Windows XP
    2.Windows 2000
    3.Solaris Express.
Also i connect to the internet via ADSl modem provided by Huawei Technologies -Model MT841 with 4 ethernet ports and 1 USB port. Unfortunately i dont have ethernet card,so i connect using USB port. This works well in XP and 2000.
I installed Solaris very recently(yesterday) and its now working.Problem is it doesn't recognise my modem,so i'm unable to connect to the net.I'm very new to this architecture. Can anyone explain why its so and the solution for it. I tried the CD that came with modem, but it doesnt include USB driver for Solaris only for Windows,MAC and Linux.
    Thanks in advance

  • Configuring Airport express to connect with ADSL modem

    Background:
I'm in the UK and I'm using a different modem than the one supplied by my ISP because Airport requires a ethernet connection (as opposed to the USB connection on the modem supplied by my ISP.
My DSL modem has a solid green light for ADSL and Ehternet
My Airport express which was bought in the USA has a solid green light
    Issues:
I can't connect to the internet using airport express and need help with the configuration, using either the PPPoE or Ethernet settings.
I've entered in all the acccount details provided by my ISP but it seems that the airport 'cant find the PPPoE host.'
I've been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

  • Problem w/ WRT54G connecting with ADSL modem...no Internet even when 'wired' connected

    Hi ladies/gents,
need help...not sure what to do...
i have ADSL modem, and i have a cable running from the modem to the "internet" port of my Linksys router.  i have another cable from Port 1 (or whichever) to my laptop.  modem works/is connected, router works/is connected, cables are good.
YET, i am getting NO internet...forget wireless here...i am just talking about the simple wired connection here and it is not giving me any Internet.  If i disconnect the modem cable from the Internet port and connect directly to laptop, then Internet works fine....frustrating.
i do know that the ISP says that they use Automatic DHCP (or something like that)
    Any ideas!?

This is not really a fix, however, what I found out from having the same problem (Limited or no connectivity) is for some reason my verizon modem (Westell 6100) and the router (Wrt54g) had the same IP address.  I changed the router IP address several time and it would alway end up with the same problem.
What I ended up doing (mind you its for no other reason than I wanted to connect to the internet and was sick of the problem) was connect my modem to the #1 port of the router and use the other three ports for my computers thinking that if they had the same IP address maybe it would work that way.  I know very little about how this stuff work but it did fix my problem.  I have been hooked up that way for months and haven't lost speed or connection since.  I hope this helps and maybe someday someone who know why it works will tell me so I will know.
    Good Luck !!
