"Connection was reset"; only fix right now is rebooting computer

Several times each day I get a "connection was reset" when visiting a particular site. I've gone through the forum and tried such suggested fixes as resetting Firefox, clearing cache, history, cookies, disabling antivirus temporarily, etc. All of these do not fix the problem; go back into Firefox and the "connection was reset" message comes up right away once site is visited. Only way to "reset" the error is to reboot the machine at which point the site will work for a bit but sooner or later "connection was reset" problem comes back again at which point computer gets rebooted once again. Thought maybe it was specific to the site in question but can open up Opera 25 and have no problems whatsoever with the same site. Any ideas? Only "clue" I have to this thing is that something about the system reboot allows the browser and site to work for a short time before error occurs again.

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

  • "The connection was reset" only in Firefox - why?

I have a site that consistently gives "The connection was reset" every three or four clicks. Refreshing brings the page up fine. Server logs show no errors whatsoever, the hits all show 200 responses with no errors logged by back-end code. This only happens in Firefox. IE, Safari, Opera all work fine.
I've tried clearing cache, cookies, etc.
    I've tried reinstalling Firefox.
I've tried reinstalling an older version of Firefox in case it's a recent bug.
    I've tried disabling DNS prefetching.
I've tried just about every other remedy I can find on the internet.
Is there any kind of HTML or JavaScript that would cause the browser to throw a fit for no apparent reason?
    Thanks.

I found this answer on this very site. I had the same issue and it was fixed instantly this way. It still does not answer why it happens though. I expect it will happen again sometime so keep this in the back of your mind for next time it occurs.

  • The connection was reset message only appearing on mozillas support and addons site

I received an error message involving a proxy when i tried going on netflix. I have the add on "media hint" which redirects the proxy through it, so i uninstalled it intending to reinstall hoping that would fix it, but i never even got that far.
When i went to the mozilla add on site, it said the connection was reset while loading the page. It said the same thing on the support forums (im on my phone now). I thought it was an https problem, but the irony is the only sites getting this error message were some mozilla sites. They work fine in other browsers.
I tried every solution i could think of or find on the internet and nothing has worked.

Are you now using a direct connection?
    Check the connection settings.

All my friends are playing and it seems I am the only one have this problem.

The "The connection was reset" error message can be caused by a bug fix for the BEAST (Browser Exploit Against SSL/TLS) attack that the server doesn't handle.

  • Itunes says that my network connection was reset how do I fix it?

So I can get Itunes to open but when I try and connect to the store it says your network connection was reset please make sure you're network connection is active and try again. But me r my brother can get it to work. what can we do?

    Hello courtneyfromcan,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368
    Troubleshoot issues in Windows
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store for more than a day (and other customers on our discussion boards aren't experiencing similar issues) a software or Internet service provider (ISP) configuration issue may be blocking your access to the iTunes Store. Find out which ports and servers need to be allowed for iTunes Store access.
Update iTunes to the latest version.
If iTunes Store appears empty and only displays the message iTunes Store, follow these steps.
Try the steps to troubleshoot iTunes Store connectivity in Windows.
As with all firewalls not manufactured by Apple, you may need to configure Windows Firewall to allow iTunes to access the iTunes Store. Follow these steps for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
Try disabling any proxies built-in to Wndows. You should avoid proxies because they can cause issues.
If you're receiving a specific error message, follow these steps.
If the issue still persists, contact your Internet service provider and confirm that these ports and servers are enabled over your network.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Why has Firefox 16.0.2 under Windows 7 started to give "connection was reset" error only when accessing Yahoo Tech Goups, except first access of the day?

On first access of the day to Yahoo technical groups, I can always retrieve the opening screen, but get no further. Almost all subsequent accesses in that day to Yahoo tech groups using this computer return a "connection was reset error", although I have very occasionally seen a successful access. Rebooting the computer makes no difference. No other websites that I visit give this problem.
I am running Windows7 (auto updates) and Firefox 16.0.2. This is a problem that started about 3 weeks ago, possibly directly after a Windows7, Adobe Reader or a Firefox update. I have tried clearing all cookies and the cache in Firefox. The problem is not seen on other computers running different operating system versions or different browsers that are accessing the Yahoo site through the same internet gateway.

Thanks again for your suggestions and links. I have gone through those, and am sorry to say I am not really any further forward. I have also gone systematically through the yahoo cookies, deleting one at a time. The only one that makes any difference is the T cookie, which must retain the login status as deleting it forces a login at the next access. After a login I get up to about a minute of Yahoo tech group activity before the "connection was reset" error pervades. All the Yahoo cookies are back in place when this happens. Using Private Browsing makes no difference to this behaviour.

  • When I open Firefox I get an error saying "Connection was reset". I went through the articles and did what they said for a situation like this but it didn't fix it. However you can help would be most appreciated. Thank you for your time. Tyron

It also says underneath "Connection was reset" "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." Despite doing what the articles said to do in this situation it hasn't solved it yet.

HI, and thank you for your reply.  I am a bit confused  however as I would have thought that once I turned off the engine of my car the transmitter and ipod would be also off???? Is there still power coming into the cigarette lighter when the car is off>????? i have a mercedes c class.  The cigarette lighter is still working and the transmitter is still working.  Are you saying that by leaving them still plugged in even though the car was idle and not running it still destroyed  the hard drive????  Also could this happen if a person leaves it docked in a radio cd player but is not listening to it, is it still charging and could this have burned out the hard drive.  (i always left it docked) until i bought the transmitter for the car.
Your thoughts would be much appreciated as obviously I do not want to make the same mistake again.
    kind regards

  • I get "The connection was reset" at times. I want this fixed for a future version of Firefox.

I am getting "The connection was reset" on certain sites, like totaljerkface.com at times. I really hope Mozilla employees get rid of this message and every website loads properly. I have never gotten this error on major websites like YouTube and Google. Can someone on this forum report this to Mozilla staff? Thanks.

Can someone help me with this report? I hate getting this error.

  • "The connection was reset" errors ColdFusion 10

    Hello,
I've searched net and Adobe forums before creating the thread. We have webserver using ColdFusion 10 and IIS 7.5, we are trying to retore our ColdFusion website on it. We are getting following errors:
Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset.
on some of the pages. The website is not live now so in order to access it you should modify your hosts file using the line : 198.61.145.21 6figurejobs.com www.6figurejobs.com .
The errror will occur when you try to go to any of the companies in Featured compamies section. example:

Very interesting ideas “you have”.  (That quoted part is a reference to the author’s use of “chickity china” as his forum name, for the sake of anyone who’s heard the classic audio clip of a phone prank. )
This will be great if it does indeed solve things for most folks. For those who may not just want to add the XML but understand what it’s doing, I’ve added some commentary here. I’d appreciate if the author would offer his concurrence that I get it right So basically you’re proposing 3 changes in IIS 7+ with regard to how 404 errors are handled.
And for the benefit of future readers, I’d like to add that you (I so wish people identified themselves) are showing it via XML changes, though one could also do them in the interface. In case someone may either be forced to make changes only in the interface, or they want to better understand what he’s proposing below, here’s how it seems (and I have confirmed by making the changes in the interface and confirmed that it ends up creating the same XML).
At a high level, he (?) is changing controls in what would be the “error pages” feature and then the “URL rewrite” feature. (And he starts out showing how to download the URL rewrite feature for IIS, but some may find that it's already installed, or can be added as a role/service. I can't recall which versions have it built-in.)
And he’s also mentioned making the XML changes in the web.config, which is supposing that the change be done for a given site, but readers should know that they could also be done at either the site or server level in the IIS interface using the “Error pages” and “URL Rewrite” features. (It can also be done at the server level in XML but by changing instead the applicationhost.config file. I will not elaborate here on doing that, but will show how to do it in the interface.)
So first, as for the error pages feature, he is doing the equivalent of removing the 404 handler from IIS for the given site, and he is changing the “edit feature settings” for “error pages” to change to “detailed”, for local AND remote requests. That latter point is very important. (That, too, is a subject worth further discussion, but now’s not a good time for me to elaborate.)
Finally, he’s adding a pair of “url rewrite” rules to handle 404’s differently (for http and https). For each rule, it will be a "blank rule" and an "inbound" one. You can see the values (in his XML) that you’d want to put in (if doing it in the interface) for the rule’s name, pattern, and added conditions (and their “input” and “pattern” values). And the “negate=yes” he shows means it’s a “does not match this pattern” check.
Further, logically, the conditions are saying “don’t run the rule if the requested file is the cffileservlet itself or any pattern starting with it, and don’t match if the requested file name is a file or folder name.” I suppose the latter is to simulate a 404 (the file requested name does not exist as a file or folder) and the former (about cffileservlet) is to help solve whatever has been perhaps the real crux of the problem. Can the author confirm? The last condition is about SSL vs not, and note that he creates 2 rules, one for HTTP and one for HTTPS.
As for how well this may solve the 404 handling problem people have had, I can’t confirm right now. I’ve not got the problem myself, but I have a few clients who do and I will point them to this to see if they confirm it solves the problem for them.
Hope that’s helpful for some readers. And thanks again to the writer, if indeed this solves the problem for folks. (Adobe has mentioned in the bug report about this, #3488063, that they are working on a new connector. It may be that after that fix is applied in the future, one would not need the special handling outlined here. I hope anyone working on that in the future will add further comment/confirmation.)
    /charlie
Message was edited by: Charlie Arehart I added comment on how the first download link refers to adding the URLRewrite tool, and how some may find that already installed.
Message was edited by: Charlie Arehart Also edited the comment to indicate that when adding rules in the interface, you would choose to create a "blank rule" and an "inbound" one.

  • I keep getting a "connection was reset error" before step 1 can finish.

I signed up for iTunes match today but everytime I try to match my library it gets to the very end of step 1 and I get this error message "We could not complete your iTunes store request. The network connection was reset. Make sure your network connection is active and try again. " My connection is fine, I tried restarting iTunes and my computer to no avail. Any suggestions?

Just wanted to document my own issues -- started getting this about a week back (Verizion FIOS user).  One system I was getting the connection reset as mentioned here, and another I was getting no errors but some downloads were showing up as either cut off or completely blank.  This was for downloads btw and not the actual Matching process.
I made two changes to these systems (both Windows 7):
1- Turned off iP6 (since I don't even use it right now)
2- Changed the DNS servers to something other than the FIOS defaults.
So far this has corrected the problem on both systems.  The DNS suggestion I found from a search so that seems to have fixed both systems.  Woot!

  • The connection was reset + Secure connection failed

Hello, I am using firefox on the web and I keep encountering the same error message that the connection was reset when I try to access webpages. Following the article at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1024256 did not solve the problem as it only fixed it for google.com and no other website, however when I hold down shift and reload the page it will reload, sometimes in basic html. Operating in safe mode will bring up these pages in basic text without graphics.
Sometimes, it will instead show the message Secure Connection Failed for trusted websites such as news agencies.
I have disabled my themes and add-ons but the problem still persists.
I woud like some guidance on how to go about fixing this problem. Thanks! :)

Check the date and time and time zone in the clock on your computer: (double) click the clock icon on the Windows Taskbar.
Check out why the site is untrusted and click "Technical Details" to expand this section.
If the certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided (sec_error_unknown_issuer) then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.
You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.
*Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"
Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".
*Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the <b>issuer of the certificate</b>.
You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.
If <b>"I Understand the Risks"</b> is missing then this page may be opened in an (i)frame and in that case try the right-click context menu and use "This Frame: Open Frame in New Tab".
*Note that some firewalls monitor (secure) connections and that programs like Sendori or FiddlerRoot can intercept connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.
*Note that it is not recommended to add a permanent exception in cases like this, so only use it to inspect the certificate.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
