Connection woes - disconnects every 1-2 minutes

Hello folks, I'm having some frustrating issues and am hoping someone may be able to help. I'll try explain it in some kind of logical order. Problem: Everyone in the house is effectively losing connection on average every one or two minutes for around 15-25 seconds each time. This is wreaking havoc with anyone trying to use VOIP, do any gaming, stream videos etc. Setup: BT Infinity running through an Openreach modem and a Home Hub 3, with ethernet to the five bedrooms in the house via an 8-port switch. Observations: I'm using a wired connection and can see that my ethernet card isn't showing any issues when the disconnects occur. The connection / duration time in the ethernet's device settings does not indicate any disconnects. Neither does the Home Hub's. The Home Hub's lights are all blue when the disconnects occur and I've been in the room to check it (not near my computer). The IP leases don't appear to be getting renewed over-frequently (which I thought could be an issue). The connection's normal (50-70Mbps down / 5-10Mbps up) in between these problems. Disconnects are frequent but don't follow a regular pattern. Attempted solutions: Running my computer in safe mode with networking. Connecting the ethernet switch to a different port on the Home Hub (although it affects wireless devices too). Power-cycling the modem and hub. Coarse language. Meditation. So... the problem appears to be something from the hub onwards towards BT's end. I still don't know if these are actual disconnects or the connection effectively dropping to near-zero bandwidth. I have Mumble (VOIP) running and it makes it pretty clear when these disconnects occur as it tells me when it's lost connection and reconnected, as does not being able to browse the internet. Thanks for reading. Any suggestions or solutions will be gladly received!

Ouch, the forums ate my formatting for that first post!
Thanks for the reply Ray. I should mention that this is a shared house, not a family home, so I cannot always access the devices. I'm the one on the ethernet connection and I've gone into my ethernet adaptor's settings to change my IP address to a static number just below that of the DHCP range whilst leaving DHCP enabled for everyone else. After restarting my computer the connection's still dropping.
Haven't had a chance to reset the hub yet, if that's necessary, as other people are using the connection at the moment.
I do have the admin password for the hub but I'm under the impression a static IP address would have to be set from the devices themselves which I can't access - or can I use Home Network > Devices, check "Always use this IP address" then disable DHCP?

  • WRT54GS wireless connection becomes unreachable every 3-6 minutes

I just got signed up with COMCAST (TV, Internet, and VOIP). The Linksys WRT54GS is connected to the COMCAST Internet-VOIP box. Everything is working fine except the wireless. I bought the Linksys WRT54GS and when I run "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" from my latop via the wireless the connection becomes unreachable every 3-6 minutes. When I "refresh the list" from the laptop the connection is working. The wireless is using WEP security, the strength during the test is 3-4 bars. The problem has been seen in the same room (7 ft away) with 5 bars. I've not yet contacted COMCAST because at this time my thoughts are that I've misconfigured the Linksys. Allen

    Allen:
If you purchased the router elsewhere, save the call to Comcast. They won't help you.
Try changing to different channels in the router. There may be interference in your area that causes the drop. I would point out that a dropped ping occasionally is normal, although when it negatively impacts your ability to stay connected, you'll want to find the issue.
The default channel on the router is 11 I think. Try going through all the channels from 1 on up and running each one for a period of time. Your wireless card doesn't need any changes made; it should reset itself to the new channel within a few seconds.

  • URGENT: WLAN disconnecting every 10-15 minutes on windows 7 laptop

    hi there
i have 2 laptops, one runs xp home and other one runs win 7 ultimate, both machines have pretty much the same stuff on.
the difference is that with the XP one wireless works great with the web authentication and never disconnects, with the win 7 machine instead, it disconnects me every 10-20 minutes or so, i came up with a trick that is to keep a streaming radio on the background, that way sometimes im connected also for 2-3-4 hours but looks like it times out again after an XX amount of time.
so should i change the MTU value on the win 7 machine? that seems to be the workaround it by reading here and there....happens the very same with either firefox 3.6 and internet explorer 8.
on the win 7 machine i installed TCP-Z driver...... > TCP-Z, Best TCP/IP Patch from http://deepxw.blogspot.com/ i tried to disable it and run some tests, but nothing changes.
help much apperciated, please answer here or to my mail gabrio81ATgmail.com

Yes, attached to the Westell 6300 is a D-Link wireless router WBR 1310. I don't have a house phone. I have a separate telephone line for the fax machine, and it has a DSL filter attached to it. I don't know what a micro-filter is.
    Thanks!

Been happening to me the last few days. I've tried to research my problem, but nothing that I've found has been able to solve on my issue. DSL light on my Westell 7500 dies every few minutes, internet goes after that. Internet light is also constantly blinking if that helps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your circuit is in poor shape. With a line like that, you should be able to get any speed you want. 7Mbps, 15Mbps, etc. You're barely holding 3Mbps which should be running at 3360kbps/864kbps sync.
To start, please locate your NID for us and connect your modem up to the NID's test jack to see if the statistics are any better. The NID should be located in most cases, near your electrical meter or near your electrical panel. This is a demarcation for your home's wiring to connect up to Verizon's copper drop.
See this FAQ for some more info: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317
A laptop and an Extension cord is handy to have around in this case. Once you get the statistics from the modem at the NID, please post them up. We just need to see if this is a problem on your end or on Verizon's end.
Also, if you have a landline, does your line have issues with static, humming, buzzing, or other noises?

  • Ipod Nano 4GB Keeps connecting and disconnecting every few seconds

when i plug the nano into a usb port... it shows up everywhere and then disconnects and then reconnects and keeps doing this, therefore i can update my ipod?
Also... the ipod works fine on the xp pc next door so i have to assume its the USB on my pc.
    Running Windows Vista RC2

My 80 GB iPod Classic is having the same problem -- when I connect it to the computer, it syncs as it should and then when I attempt to disconnect it, it starts syncing again. It does this no matter whether I disconnect through iTunes or through the desktop (i.e., dragging the iPod icon to the dock to eject it). This never happened before a software update last week. I forget the update but it was something to do with the Intel processor, I think. My date and time was also screwed up but when I woke up this morning that was finally ok.

  • EA4500 disconnects every 2-4 minutes

Did anyone use EA4500 with L2TP connection? I really don't know what to do. I bought this router because I wanted to setup my home network with really high quality up-todate and efficient router. Previously I used Dlink DIR685. Everything was OK but lately my ISP increased internet speed up to 40 megabit per second and Dlink can’t establish connection at a speed higher than 20 mbit/sec. So I bought the best router – I thought so. Router appeared to be rather powerful – the connection was established at a speed ~ 34 mbit/sec, wifi broadcast occurred  to be also of high speed and long range. But the main and terrible problem is that the longest internet session for the last 10 days was about 30 minutes. And that is with "keep alive" setting activated. That is awful! My Dyn DNS service doesn’t have even enough time  to update my new IP in its DNS base. Of course that is way I can’t get external access to my ftp most of the time. I believe that its firmware ver.2.0.37 is very raw. And there is no any firmware on Linksys site so I can’t neither reinstall firmware 2.0.37 nor downgrade to 2.0.36. Hope this bug will be corrected soon. May be that is defect of this specific router? Did anyone faced something like this?

In order to take full advantage of the speed and range that wireless 802.11N has to offer, both router and adapter must be wireless 802.11N capable. So, check the wireless computers that you have are N-capable adapters with the updated drivers.
Launch Cisco Connect. Click on router settings and then click on 'advanced settings' and click ok.
This will open the router's web interface. Click on the wireless tab at the top. Then click on manual. After this, Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your routers main/ basic setup page). Here is the link for determining and setting up the correct MTU size: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=fbf8e8564632422eaa8ea80bf9dcba64_386.xml&pid=80&re...
     Then check the connectivity status..

  • ICHAT disconnects every five minutes...

My iChat disconnects every 5-10 minutes saying the connection was lost -- even though the browser still works! This only happens at my home with my wireless router.
Everywhere else I've used iChat (on other connections) it stays connected..
    HELP!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
A Browser and even the Mail app if you use it only use the internet now and then.
For Mail this is when mail is collected or sent.
For a Web Browser it is each time you change page (Some pages automatically refresh to keep the adverts up to date)
You may only notice a slight pause in a browser if it is waiting for the Internet to come back.
iChat is a truly "Always ON" app
With any Buddy list that logs in to AIM it will instantly indicate any change in status of a Buddy (On-line, Off line, Status message Changes).
As a result any issue with the Internet connection no matter how short will normally get the buddy list to fold (say Disconnected).
If this Home router is Wifi try changing the channel it uses so not to get interference from other nearby devices.

I got a new router and my internet and everything is working fine except for my iChat, which keeps disconnecting every couple of minutes. It's getting pretty annoying as it signs me off in the middle of a conversation. How do I fix it?

  • EA 2700 disconnecting every once in awhile. (30/60minutes)

    Heya,
I'm having issues with a newly bought EA 2700 router, I'm getting disconnected every 30-60 minutes. (It's a brief disconnect for about 10seconds, perhaps a huge packet loss or something?)
I've tried connecting directly to the modem and that seemed to have fixed the problem, so I think that it is a router issue...?
Perhaps somebody here knows how to fix this. Would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I'm connected with a wire. Also, my download/upload/ping is 35mbps download, 35ish mbps upload, and 8ms. (I have a 35mbps connection so that's fine) But when I connect my PC to the modem directly, my MS becomes 5, and my upload jumps to 77mbps. The download stays the same... I thought that was quite strange. ;o

Hmm alright. I've already reset it multiple times, also reverted it to factory settings twice. But I keep disconnecting every hour orso. The firmware is up to date as well. My NIC is running at 1.0 gbps, I'm not sure where I can see what the router is at however. But I assume 1gbps as well? I've tried disabling UPnP, disabling IPv6 at the network adapter. I also tried to set the router to Bridge Mode, that made my upload go up to 77mbps again and my Ping down to 5, but I disconnected every few minutes for a while, then the day after (I went to bad cause it was driving me insane) it seemed to work for a while, but then I started getting disconnected for brief moment again. So I put it back to automatic DHCP config.
Edit: I also tried to empty the %temp% folder, that seemed to help, but not for long. (Perhaps not at all.)
Edit2: I also replaced my network cable twice, but seeing as the issues went away when I plugged directly into the modem I figured that that couldn't be the issue either...
Edit3: I keep remembering things that I tried to do in order to fix this, I also reinstalled my network drivers. ;-)

  • Microsoft Messenger or Ebuddy connects and disconnects

    Hello
I've just bought my iPhone 4 a month ago. I'm very happy with it (formerly a BlackBerry user) but there's an issue that is driving me crazy. I've installed Microsoft Messenger and it connects and disconnects every 3 minutes. Also I've tried with Ebuddy but it has the same behaviour. It's quite strange because with BlackBerry I had no issues regarding this app
My carrier is Movistar (Colombia) and I have an unlimited data plan
Do anybody know how to solve this? I've read the Messenger's reviews on the Apple Store and it seems that a lot of people (in Latin America at least) are having the same problem
    Thank you

You need to contact Microsoft about a problem with their iPhone app and the same for the app developer for eBuddy.

  • Airplay disconnects every hour

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2 connected using AirPlay to an updated AppleTV.  I am NOT running battery power.  Using iPhoto I am playing a slideshow on the TV.  The slidewhow runs seamlessly but the AirPlay connection automatically disconnects every hour (exactly one hour).
It is not a networking issue associated with any latency or interference.  There are no other devices on the wireless network; the environment is free of other sources of competing RF energy.  I have no overlapping channels, competing radios or other sources of RF energy in the same frequency range (I live in the country and the nearest home is more than 1/2 mile away).  There are no operating microwave ovens, bluetooth devices, cordless phones, baby monitors or other potential competitors in the area.  Even if such interference were present it would not account for an interruption that occurs at exact 60-minute intervals.  To further prove this I have verified that the problem still exists when connected via Cat5e.
When the AirPlay connection is broken the slideshow continues to play on the MacBook.  If I stop the slideshow and re-start it the mysterious 60-minute disconnect counter does NOT reset; it still disconnects exactly one hour after the AirPlay connection started.  This suggest the issue is not a timer or setting in iPhoto.
I tried unchecking the "Automatic graphic switching" box in the Energy Saver section of System Preferences but this actaully caused a random freeze in the slide show.
I suspect there is a setting somewhere that I am unaware of or have overlooked.  Has anyone had this problem or can you suggest a fix?  There are lots of posts on the Internet of people having AirPlay disconnect at irregular intervals but I cannot find one that addresses a non-networking-related every 60-minute disconnect.
    Any insight will be appreciated.

It may be worth looking at what your DHCP lease is set for on your dhcp server. If it is set for a 1 hour lease it may be the cause. You could try setting up the ATV and the Macbook Pro with a static IP or set your dhcp lease to expire at a longer interval, say 4 hours to see if it goes longer than an hour. I have seen dhcp lease setting cause this type of problem in the past.

  • IPhone 4s connects and disconnects from Windows 8

Apologies if this has been asked before as i'm sure it has but I can't find a solution.
I have a new HP Compaq laptop using USB 3.0, when I connect my IPhone 4s to my laptop it connects and disconnects every seconds, I've looked in the device manager and can't find anything to do with Apple in there.
Has anyone found a solution to this?
