Connections over firewire and ethernet

Can i force specific users/groups use different network interfaces?
i want 2 macs to be connected to server via firewire 800 and other people via ethernet.
how? as soon as i connect these 2 macs to network hub, then all traffic goes through ethernet..

Certainly.
In the network control panel I set Built-in FireWire to the top of the service order list, followed by Built-in Ethernet.
Next, I set Built-in FireWire to Configure Manually with the address 192.168.1.xxx and the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.xxx, making sure the Subnet Mask is set the same on both machines and that the IP address is different on both machines and different from the Built-in Ethernet addresses.
I applied the settings, turned on Sharing on both machines, then mounted whatever shared drives I needed by connecting to the other machine using the FireWire IP address.
Now I am able to share drives using FireWire 800 - which works great when used with Time Machine - and still use my normal ethernet to surf, etc..

  • IP over Firewire and ethernet at the same time?

Is it possible to use both IP over Firewire and ethernet at the same time?
I want to use my TB hard drive attached to one Mac via Firewire 800 to backup another Mac also attached to the same drive via Firewire 800. I can only mount the drive on one machine at a time so I need to share it out to the other Mac. It works great if I set it up to do strait IP over Firewire, with static IPs, but that means I can't connect to the internet because my ethernet connection on both machines becomes the secondary connection method. Similarly, if ethernet is primary then I can't connect via Firewire. Is there a way to set it up so the Macs will know which method to use depending on the IP address?
I am using 10.5.1 on both machines.
    G5, 1.8 GHz, 15.GB RAM
    MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM
    Thanks!

  • IP over Firewire AND Ethernet  connected cluster?

Does anyone have any experience with IP over Firewire and Qmaster? What I'm trying to do (for now) is to have a file server connected to a bunch of Firewire HD's, then that connected to two other macs via IP over Firewire, and all that be a cluster.
The file server is the controller. Or I want it to be at least. Connected to this cluster are two workstations, connected to the file server via Ethernet.
So it's File Server with several external Firewire HD's connected to it with the video data. Connected to this file server are two macs via IP over Firewire which will be services only nodes. Connected to ALL of this over ethernet are two editing workstations. Qadmin can't seem to see the two mac nodes connected via IP over Firewire.
The problem is that Qadminstrator can't see the two macs connected to the file server via IP over Firewire. I'm wondering if for some reason data can't go from Ethernet to IP over Firewire and back again.
Any tips or suggestions? I'm just about out of ideas for now.

I was also NOT ABLE to use both nodes connected in a MIX of ETHERNET and FIREWIREover IP.
I WAS able to get a 4 x NODE cluster working using SHAKE & COMPRESSOR/QMASTER using all GbE EThernet - I went out and bought a cheap 8 x PORT ethernet GbE hub and all my problems went away.
HEre's what I had initially and what I did and it DIDN'T work consistently..:
    Hardware Initially:
    • g5 QUAD and 2 x MBP Dual Core 15's + 1 x MBPDC 17inch.
    • G5 QUAD GBE1 connected to #1 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable
    • G5 QUAD GBE2 connected to #2 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable
    • G5 QUAD FW0 connected to 1 x MBPDC 17 on its FW1 with 6 pin FW cable
    • G5 QUAD is set as CONTROLLER+SERVICES
    • MBPDC's are all SERVICES ONLY.
    • thus 3 x SUBNETS
    SETUP#1- problem symptoms
    • via QMASTERADMIN - G5 CONTROLLER could see MBPDC 17 and ONE of the MBP15;s but not all of them.
•tries various configs on each FW and EN0 for boths FW and EN paths.. never consistent view..
    • removed some FW disks from FW400 path that were attached to CONTROLLER G5 host ... could then see ALL as a MIX of THERNET and FW. (Same happens using FW800 - although avoided this because of sperious DISK issues wth external FW800 disks on G5 QUAD).
    • created cluster (not a quick cluster)- sent simple long I-FRAME based DV-PAL to smaller DVPAL) codec test to compressor and set the CLUSTER to the QMASTER on I defined.
    • set QMASTER controller sys pref to use ALL NETWORK PATHS and disbaled the AIRPORT subnets on each MACHINE)
    • PROBLEM was only G5(controller+services) and TWO of the services nodes (MBPDC's) were processing - NEVER all three! It didn't seem to matter what IP path was onnected (EN or FW).
    • - all the above was a NO go waster of time. (aggh)
    so..
HARDWARE SET UP #2 and what worked first time!
    • purchased 1 x GBE Ethernet hub (8xport) w/P/supply and four 1m ethernet cables
    • g5 QUAD and 2 x MBP Dual Core 15's + 1 x MBPDC 17inch.
    • G5 QUAD GBE1 connected to GBE HUB
    • #1 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
    • #2 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
    • #1 x MBPDC 17 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
    • G5 QUAD is set as CONTROLLER+SERVICES
    • MBPDC's are all SERVICES ONLY.
    • thus 1 x SUBNET....!
    WORKS EVERY TIME First time
    • all machines work to render or transcode.
    • for SHAKE RENDERING, each CPU has a process.. so there seems to be as many as (4 x 1)+2 + 2 + 2 rendering processes at any one time.
    • less for COMPRESSOR as one per HOST (4 in my case)
    Also.. in QMASTERADMIN - always:
    • have the SOURCE and TAGET disk volumes|directories ou need MOUNTED (NFS works for me) and
    • set to NEVER COPY.
    • set QMASTER sys prefs/Advanced/"USe NEtwork Interface = EN0 (or whatever one you want to use. 'd imagine that a FW hub would also do the job (IPoFW).... but for me I had all free ETHERNETs NICS so I used them.
    • oh .. enable all your airports NICS.. .. in the above QMASTER wont use this subnet.
This speeds the WORKFLOW up enormously because the source material does not have to be COPIED to each host (well I think that what it means).
So the solution in my case was to have ALL the HOSTS on a SINGLE subnet..
    works for me.
    hope that helps

  • IPod no longer connects over FireWire

I have a 20 GB iPod with click wheel, which I think I purchased in 2004. I sync it with a Power Mac G5 dual 2.5GHz. I've never been able to sync it over USB, and according to Apple that's a known problem with this iPod and a G5...but up until a week or so ago, syncing over FireWire worked fine.
Now it doesn't. If I plug the iPod into my G5 with its FireWire cable, it starts to charge but the machine doesn't mount it. I get the same result plugging it into my MacBook via FireWire, but it works fine with USB. Initially I thought it might be the cable, but I got a replacement cable and the same thing happened.
Any idea what might be going on?

Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode.

  • MB Air cannot see TC 1T '09 while connected via WiFi and Ethernet.

I have a TC 1T 2009 7.4.1 that I have set up successfully with MB Pro and MB White. However I cannot set it up with MB Air v.1 which is connected to TC via WiFi AND Ethernet cable. Internet is fine (Safari) but no TM - when I run APU 5.4.1 it cannot discover the TC it is connected to.
I tried connecting after hard-reset (poke/power on), it would see the TM but then hang forever reading the configuration. So I set it up with MB Pro and MB White and both are now working fine with TC/TM. Then I tried MB Air and it failed.
The TC is connected via ethernet to Sagem router (bridged mode) which supplies WAN and DHCP, it has its own WiFi as well.

And by the way, Hi Everyone, how rude of me not to greet you in the post.
    Thanks for any help!

  • MythTV - Getting Motorola DCT 6200 box to connect over FireWire

I have a fresh 64-bit install of Arch and I've installed MythTV. I plugged in my Motorola DCT-6200 HDTV set top box via FireWire to my HTPC. MythTV does not list the FireWire as a capture option. And, to be honest, I have no idea what else to do at this point. I understand this is probably going to take a lot of effort but if I could simply get pointed in the right direction, that would be great. Thanks!

I've used an old 500GB HD I had and it works fine. Many drives will work other than what's listed on Verizon's list.  Stay away from "Green" drives, as they may power down at times which you do not want.
I kept trying to connect this drive multiple times, thinking it was not recognized because the space available did not change. It took me a while to realize that a new 2nd tab appeared for the 2nd drive!  Toggling over to the right to select this tab would then show the available space on the external HD.  My prior provider, Cablevision, did not work this way.  Their software combined both HD's into one total storage display amount.  So, check to see if you've got the 2nd tab.  If not, then it is not being recognized.  Might be worth trying another cable.

  • Canon MX340 wireless printer no longer connecting over wireless and coming up with "a communications error has occured"

I have a Canon MX340 wireless printer and have only recently started having trouble printing over the wireless connection. No settings have changed on my MacBook Pro, the printer, the router or the wifi connection and it is strange how it has just stopped working. I have tried things like restarting the laptop and removing the printer from the laptop and re-adding it. It sometimes seems to work for maybe one print but then it goes back to saying "a communications error has occured", when I try to print again.
Any help would be great. Thanks

I had the same MX340 problem.  My printer was working fine over WiFi connection to my Airport Extreme for years and then suddenly, about a month ago, it stopped printing after the first print job.  I can print once and then I have to power-cycle the printer to get it to print another time and then I have to repeat the power-cycle.
The printer seems to be "forgotten" by the network or lose its connection after the first print job.
On my MacBookPro 10.6.8 I get the error code 300...yadayadayad... On my iMac 10.5.8 it just says :communications error".
HERE IS THE FIX - I got it off this link - http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=24681
You have to connect to the MX340 using the printer cable that came with the printer (or any USB printer cable) and set up a hardwired USB printer queue.  Then print a couple of print jobs - I use TextEdit and type in "1234".  Then try the same thing but select your WiFi print queue - I just type another line on the same sheet of paper with TextEdit.
The WiFi connection should work again.  I did this a few more times and then disconnected the USB cable and now it continues to work without the USB print queue being used.  I can also print to the WiFi queue with my iMac.
If you still have problems I suggest you set up the printer again on the WiFi router using the "print cable connection" method.  Here's a link to a webpage someone kindly provided instructions for the process:

  • HT201514 I recently updated the Imac software, now i can't see my Wd back up drive in 'time machine' Its connected via firewire and i can see its connected if i check firewire on my mac.

I recently updated my IMac software to the latest version, now i can't see by WD back up drive in time machine. its conected to the firewire port ok and i can see it if i check firewire connections. The drive works ok on an old windows laptop. Any ideas.

    leedssparky wrote:
Is it possible that i did this whilst updating the OS software whilst leaving the WD drive connected.
It's a good idea to eject and disconnect external HDs, just in case, but that shouldn't cause a problem.
Why when setting up time capsule, does it only look for WIFI drives through airport.
I think you're confusing Time Machine (the backup software) with a Time Capsule (Apple hardware combining a wireless router and HD).  Unless you have a Time Capsule you want to back up to, there's no point to clicking the Set Up Time Capsule button, if that's what you mean:
I've attached the Firewire bus from system profiler, dont understand why i can see it there but not in TM.
There seems to be some sort of problem with the drive, since Disk Utility thinks it's fixed, but immediately the problem returns (per the first sample you posted).
    How old is the drive?
If it's within the warranty period, you might want to contact WD or the place you bought it.

  • Ethernet over Firewire - possible?

Say you have a gigabit ethernet port on a gigabit network... is there some piece of hardware, router, anything which would let you get to the network via a firewire port?
I ask because I am working on a Powerbook with a broken ethernet port which needs access to a gigibit network. Since FW800 is comparable in speed and is capable of IP sharing, is there any way to use it to connect to a network?
    Thanks!
    Rey

Hi Rey, I have networked an iBook and a PC via Firewire so in my humble opinion I think it'd be possible, have a look here.
    http://developer.apple.com/devicedrivers/firewire/ipoverfirewire.html
"Customers can immediately enable IP over FireWire and then connect two or more Macintosh systems by FireWire for file sharing, Internet sharing, or the use of any other IP-based service".http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1845.html I'll have a bit more of a look around and get back to you.

  • IP over Firewire Clobbering

Hi, I'm using an iMac DV running 10.4.6. It has a fried Ethernet jack, so I used to use a PowerBook G3 and do IP over Firewire Internet sharing. This worked great until I purchased an external Iomega 250GB HDD drive, and started using that as my iMac's boot disk. Now when I try to do this, the iMac locks up when the laptop is connected via Firewire and won't stop until I've unplugged the laptop. How can I get this setup to work and/or what other solutions do I have?
Possibly Relevant Fact: Before I was using the external drive as a boot disk, when I would plug my iPod into my iMac (using Firewire) while I was using Firewire Internet sharing, it would appear on the laptop, not the iMac.
iMac DV Special Edition   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, I did this when I didn't have the external Firewire boot drive, and it worked correctly. My problem is that it freezes the iMac when I go to connect the two machines via a Firewire cord, regardless of whether Internet sharing is enabled. This is probably a more hardware/firmware-oriented problem, but I'm not really sure how to classify it.

  • IMac G3 sees 5G USB connection as firewire???

    Anyone seen this issue?
Distress call from my neighbour who has an iPod 5G 30Gig video, an iBook G4 and an iMac G3 CRT (2001 slot loader).
The iBook G4 belongs to the school where she teaches, so she wants to have all her music library on her G3 iMac.
The iPod is running version 1.2.1 software.
The iMac is now running OSX 10.4.6 and iTunes 7.02
When she tries to connect the iPod to the iMac's USB 1.1 port she receives a message saying that connection over Firewire is not possible????
The same cable (and we've tried a couple of "known good ones" of my own as well) connects fine to the iBook G4.
Is there an issue with the iMac CRT for this? Any known OS incompatabilities likely to cause the issue? I'm about to try the 10.4.8 combo updater, followed by a restore of the iPod if it doesn't fix it. Thoughts on other possible solutions?
The only other device connected via the USB ports on the computer is the original Apple keyboard/mouse.
    Cheers
    Rod

Thanks Tony, but the problem here involved a little more than the normal USB 1.1 only issue. In this case, when connected to an iMac G3 USB 1.1 port the computer reported that a firewire connection could not be used. The computer was NOT connected to a firewire port at the time.
The iPod was replaced under warranty and the new one connects to the same iMac G3 without any problems (at USB 1.1 speeds, of course) . This was a hardware defect which prevented use of the particular defective iPod under USB 1.1 altogether, not simply a matter of putting up with slower transfer speeds.
I posted the information about the "solution" for the benefit of any others who may find themselves confronting a similar issue.
I'm afraid you can't use an external drive as a 'bridge" between USB2 and FW in the fashion that you hint at. USB 2 and FW are simply not "bridgeable" in this fashion, and "Combo" HD boxes simply operate on one interface or the other at any one time , not on both simultaneously.
    Cheers

  • HT1341 Printing over firewire causes mac osx crash

I have had my Epson R2400 connected over Firewire to my MBP (10.8.3) for many months with no problem. Now whenever I print a document the MBP crashes and reboots without a message. I have tried a repair disk permissions, clearing teh caches, resetting the printer, reinstalling the driver and plugging the FW cable direct to the MBP (was via the Thunderbolt display) and neither had any effect. The printer does work over USB but that uses a USB port I can't spare.
Any suggestions on what might be the problem?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Are you using a FW 800> 400 adapter? Your printer is older and most likely only has FW 400 capability.

  • Internet sharing from mountain lion to tiger over firewire

Hi, I have just purchased an imac g4 from ebay and am having trouble getting it to connect to the internet.
My internet connection comes from teathering my iphone over wifi to my MBP. I have been trying to share this connection from my macbook to my imac over firewire but haven't had any luck.
I've tried connecting direct to my phone over wifi but I don't get an ip address, the same happens when I share the connection from my laptops wi-fi.
I have connected to a hotspot with the imac so i know that the wi-fi works and i can get a connection over firewire that says "You are connected to the internet via built in firewire" but when i try and load a webpage i cannot load anything.
When connected via firewire my macbook shows up in the network tab of the finder, my shared itunes library shows up and my laptop comes up in the list of devices in my VNC but when i try to use these connections it always fails, i cannot even get a ping responce from my laptop.
Im not sure if it is a compatibility issue with M lion and tiger, an IP address issue or something els entirely.
All help would be greatly appriciated
    Thanks in advanced
    Jake

If you use your MacBook Pro as the "server" connected to the Internet. you can connect 27" 2011 iMac to your MacBook Pro via a FireWire 800 cable. (assuming your MBP has a FireWire output, I don't own one).By using Target Disk Mode (Hold down the "T" key until you see "spinning gears" on Restart or Start-up).
Your MBP will appear as a Hard Disk on your 27" display or your 27" iMac can be displayed as a Hard disc on your MBP display.
    Switch the firewall off on both machines (if it was on) to see if it helps;
    Try to connect using a different device to the shared connection (another computer, smartphone, iPad, etc.);
    Use an open connection first (no password), before trying with WEP;
Reverse the roles of the two computers (i.e. try sharing the connection from the MBP to the iMac).
Also, more details might help (OS X version on the machines, whether you are trying to share a wired connection, installed software which might interact with the network connections, etc.)
Hope this helps in some way.

  • Both thunderbolt display and ethernet stopped working at the same time

I use recent Macbook pro 13inch retina.  I use both of thunderbolt ports on ethernet and display.
I was messing around with application, and I found chess game. I played it for while than my display and ethernet suddenly stopped working.
I do know ethernet and display is working fine because My roommate still have access to the ethernet, and My xbox still works on my display monitor.
So, I suspected its thunderbolt problem, and I reinstalled Mavericks twice and reseted SMC and NVRAM, which didn't solve anything.
Do you have any suggestion before I take this computer to Apple store?

So the ports still work, and the display still lights up when you use it with your xbox? Are you sure about the xbox part, I didn't think the thunderbolt display worked with an xbox.

Do you have the LED Cinema display? Look at the back, do you have 3 USB ports or 3 USB ports, firewire and ethernet?

  • How do i connect a printer via ethernet?

    greetings.
i run an imac 20 inch late 2006 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.7.4 and i would like to connect a sharp al-1655cs printer/copier/scanner directly to the mac.  first off, i know sharp doesn't have a mac driver for this machine; but i'm hoping i can come up with some sort of "plain vanilla" solution.  i've tried to establish the connection via usb and ethernet with no results.  via usb, the mac identifies the sharp, thinks it delivers a print job, and 10 minutes later declares the job complete with no actual output.  via ethernet, i'm not able to add an acceptable ip address (the one given on the side of the machine 080014 6d3efc -- which i've tried in groups of two, three and four separated by periods or colons).  i do have a wifi router and could patch the printer into that but, frankly, i'd like to avoid buying a 20' ethernet cable.  i've looked far and wide across the interweb and am not finding any help specific to direct ethernet cabling a printer to a mac running running 10.7.4.  i'm pretty tech-capable, so don't be shy suggesting solutions.  any help to get this going would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the software is only for Wintel machines. Sharp does state in its manual that the AL-1655CS can be used by Apple machines via the USB 2.0 port. But in reality, you need to be running Mac OS 10.3 and above to use the printing, network, and scanning applications native to OS X or through 3rd party applications, like Photoshop.
