Time Machine shows i have back ups going back to 30 Oct 2007 but I cannot browse them. I did an OS reinstall and anything prior to that reinstall seems unopenable. Anyway to browse that info without complete reinstall?

We told you in the other thread that if you want CS5 to be the default program you'll need to reinstall in chronological order.
Short of that you can attempt to hack the registry, and no I can't tell you the correct key, but some other users have posted about it here. Windows, by itself, will not honor an Open With request for an earlier version of an executable wioththe same name (in other words, both CS3 and CS5 have programs named InDesign.exe, and only the one in the registry, normally the last one installed, will get called). If you want files to open in the version from which they were saved -- a different problem-- you can prchase a utility from Rorohiko.com called Soxy that is supposed to handle that. Works well on Mac, but I don't recall any reports about Windows. The other option is to open the correct version, then use the File > Open... command and stop trying to double-click a file to open it.

The make of the disk doesn't really tell us how your data is being backed up onto that disk. Do you know what software it uses?
For example Time Machine copies files every hour in a way that is not bootable, but you can extract those files & get all your data back into a working OS.
Carbon Copy Cloner duplicates a disk in a way that is bootable - it would appear when holding alt at startup so you could use that to boot & inspect the state of the internal disk.
It may also be Seagate's own software that does something different.
Please try recovery mode, if that works you can try repairing the disk in Disk Utility.

If that works, select Disk Utility & see if the internal disk can be repaired in the first aid tab.
Recovery mode can also download OS X & reinstall it, however you really need to know if the backup contains everything before that is attempted, otherwise you may lose data. The OS is also around 5GB so you may have issues if your internet is capped or unstable etc.

Search & ask around, you may find some help, try recovery mode first.

Files in Finder but won't open

I made a disc image the other day using Carbon Copy Cloner and when I mount it, there are a bunch of files that list in the Finder just like they would normally, with appropriate file sizes and their icons in tact, but they won't open in their respective applications. Every file, like a quicktime for example, if you double click it will open its associated application but then the app will report an error like "can't understand file" or something like that. Does anyone have experience with files that appear to be there but won't open? THanks.

According to your profile information, you are running OS X 10.3.x. If that is the case, you should post in that forum as you are liable to get incorrect answers here. If you are running OS X 10.4.X, I have read that CCC had some compatibility problems with OS X 10.4 - I do not know if they are resolved (I dumped CCC in favor of SuperDuper months ago). I only use SD (and before that CCC) to make bootable clones......

Firefox sent an email to me to confirm that I had asked the above question. The email had a link to click. When I clicked it from Firefox, nothing happened. Then I opened IE, signed into Comcast, opened the email, clicked the link, and it brought me here.

I have a new installation of Acrobat Pro, along with PS5. Computer is a mac w/snow leopard. Question is Acrobat 8 shows in the dock but won't open - says PS must be open for it to work - but PS is open(and functioning fine). So how do I get Acrobat working?

I opened an earlier version of a CS program (Illustrator 3). Acrobat seemed to find what it needed and opened. It now opens normally - even with CS3 applications closed.

I got your note and was able to complete the first part, but when I came to Finder, Go To Folder and I typed in both /var/db/receipts/ and /private/var/db/receipts all I get is NOT FOUND message. I tried several times, but no luck.
