Consequences of including Windows.pvm file?

i had an issue with my parallels virtual installation on my MBP and realize I was excluding the .pvm file from my backups which I would like to start /including/.
is there some issue with the fact that this is a 40 or 50 GB single file as it relates to doing incremental backups? i mean, i guess i am asking if this is going to take up a very large amount of space very fast for some reason.
there was some suggestion on the parallels boards to set parallels to store the data as a set of 2GB files which might cut down on the size incremental backups take up but I don't want to do anything unless i absolutely have to.
can i back up this file without huge increases in the amount of space it takes up??
TIA

OK. Thank you.
Can I just ask here if anyone knows if this is pretty straighforward in Parallels? I mean, I guess there is some Option that tells the software to store the data in 2GB pieces and that this does not have any consequences or deleterious effects...
Thanks!

    I have a Windows 7 laptop using I tunes 64 and all my music files are
    on an external disc. I rarely use I tunes and at one point moved all my files
    (including the music files) from one external disc to another without
    considering what affect this would have on the I tunes library. When I eventually
    attempted to use I tunes, every selected a song from the library resulted in a
    message stating that the file couldn't be located. After following some of the procedures
    explained in this community I was able to reconnect the library back to where
    the associated music files are presently stored. However, there are still 2
    problems that need to be corrected. 1) Every song file now has a duplicate. One
    file works and the other file will result in the same message stating that the
    file couldn't be located. Before there were 4,000 songs in the library, now
    there are 8,000 songs. I need to eliminate the 4,000 dead song files. 2) All
    the playlists are still associated with the dead song files which makes the
    playlists unusable. Can the playlists be reconnected to the usable files
    without manually having to recreate them? Thanks in advance for the help.

    So am I understanding correctly?
    You used your iPod as a hard drive (drag and drop) instead of having iTunes install the music?
    If you used drag and drop your choices are different than if you used iTunes to transfer.
    Good luck!

    in addendum to Tom's reply …
    to convert wmv and wma into Mac-friendly formats, you need the PlayerPro from
    http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac/
    for 29$
    The other versions are only needed, if you want to convert TO wmv.
    There're are orther converters avail, some for free, but wmv is a Microsoft-owned format, which costs licences.

  • Windows 7, file properties - Is "date accessed" ALWAYS 100% accurate?

    Hello,
    Here's the situation: I went on vacation for a couple of weeks, but before I left, I took the harddrive out of my computer and hid it in a different location. Upon coming back on Monday (January 10, 2011) and putting the harddrive back in my computer, I
    right-clicked on different files to see their properties. Interestingly enough, several files had been accessed during the time I was gone! I right-clicked different files in various locations on the harddrive, and all of these suspect files had been accessed
    within a certain time range (Sunday, ‎January ‎09, ‎2011, approximately ‏‎between 6:52:16 PM - 9:06:05 PM). Some of them had been accessed at the exact same time--down to the very second. This makes me think that someone must have done
    a search on my harddrive for certain types of files and then copied all those files to some other medium. The Windows 7 installation on this harddrive is password protected, but NOT encrypted, so they could have easily put the harddrive into an enclosure/toaster
    to access it from a different computer.
    Of course I did not right-click every single file on my computer, but did so in different folders. For instance, one of the folders I went through has different types of files: .mp3, ,prproj, .3gp, .mpg, .wmv, .xmp, .txt with file-sizes ranging from 2 KB
    to 29.7 MB (there is also a sub-folder in this folder which contains only .jpg files); however, of all these different types of files in this folder and its subfolder, all of them had been accessed (including the .jpg files from the sub-folder) EXCEPT the
    .mp3 files (if it makes any difference, the .mp3 files in this folder range in size from 187 KB to 4881 KB). Additionally, this sub-folder which contained only .jpg files (48 .jpg files to be exact) was not accessed during this time--only the .jpg files within
    it were accessed-- (between 6:57:03 PM - 6:57:08 PM).
    I thought that perhaps this was some kind of Windows glitch that was displaying the wrong access date, but then I looked at the "date created" and "date modified" for all of these files in question, and their created/modified dates and
    times were spot on correct.
    My first thought was that someone put the harddrive into an enclosure/toaster and viewed the files; but then I realized that this was impossible because several of the files had been accessed at the same exact time down to the second. So this made me think
    that the only other way the "date accessed" could have changed would have been if someone copied the files.
    Is there any chance at all whatsoever that this is some kind of Windows glitch or something, or is it a fact that someone was indeed accessing my files (and if someone was accessing my files, am I right about the files in question having been copied)? Is
    there any other possibility for what could have happened?
    Do I need to use any kinds of forensics tools to further investigate this matter (and if so, which tools), or is there any other way in which I can be certain of what took place in that timeframe the day before I got back? Or is what I see with Windows 7
    good enough (i.e. accurate and truthful)?
    Thanks in advance, and please let me know if any other details are required on my part.
    P.S. The harddrive is NTFS.

    Never mind.  Someone else already answered this for me:
    "I use last accessed-created date time stamps all the time when troubleshooting-investigating software installs, its been very accurate in my uses of it in NTFS file systems.
    Since some of the dates are while you were gone, I assume it was several days to a week, I would say someone did access those files.
    These timestamps along with other data are used by computer forensics teams to reconstruct what a user did on a computer.
    Experienced Hackers use software to alter these time stamps to cover their tracks when breaking into computer systems."
    http://superuser.com/questions/232143/windows-7-file-properties-is-date-accessed-always-100-accurate/232320#232320
    Additionally, I just now found out what happened. Someone else found the harddrive and thought it was theirs (since it was identical to one they had been missing), so they put it in their computer and scanned it with an anti-virus software. They realized it
    wasn't theirs and then put it back in the place I had hidden it.
    In my original question, I stated a possible theory that someone may have copied the files, but I later realized that copying in itself doesn't affect the "date accessed" of the original/source file, but rather only the "date accessed" of
    the copy.
    Thanks to all those that may have read my question.

  • Reading Windows text file in Fortran?

    Is there a way to make the f90 compiler read Windows text files properly? I made a simple test with a text file created on a Windows system containing these three lines:
    This is a Windows text file.
    It has some extra control characters.
    Unix does not have those.
    The output I got was:
    <-ext file.
    <-e extra control characters.
    <-se.
    Kevin

    That makes more sense. The problem isn't with the Fortran program, but with the Unix terminal (xterm, or whatever you're using to display the output). If you pipe the output through od like this you'll see all the characters, including the ^M:
    bash-3.00$ fortranread | od -c
    0000000       w   i   n   f   i   l   e       i   s       -   >   T   h
    0000020   i   s       i   s       a       W   i   n   d   o   w   s
    0000040   t   e   x   t       f   i   l   e   .  \r
    0000060
    0000100                                           <   -  \n       w   i
    0000120   n   f   i   l   e       i   s       -   >   I   t       h   a
    0000140   s       s   o   m   e       e   x   t   r   a       c   o   n
    0000160   t   r   o   l       c   h   a   r   a   c   t   e   r   s   .
    0000200  \r
    0000220                               <   -  \n       w   i   n   f   i
    0000240   l   e       i   s       -   >   U   n   i   x       d   o   e
    0000260   s       n   o   t       h   a   v   e       t   h   o   s   e
    0000300   .  \r
    0000320
    0000340                   <   -  \n
    0000347When the terminal sees the ^M character, it does a carriage return. That means that the next character gets written in the first column. Since the characters after the ^M are spaces, that makes the beginning of the lines appear blank.
    If you want to see the output you expect, you need to pipe it through "tr -d '\015'", or you need to make the Fortran program itself delete the ^M characters. For example, you could write "myline(1:len_trim(myline)-1)" to always strip the last character of the line.
    We should consider making formatted reads strip the ^M by default. I don't know whether any program would actually want them.

  • How to include Windows environment variables in e-mail action scheduled task

    Hello Support,
    Is it possible to include Windows environment variables such as %username% or %computername% in the subject line or body of the "Send e-mail" action item of the Task Scheduler?  For example, I would like when I setup a scheduled
    task to perform a certain task and send an e-mail message,  the email should include either the user name or computer name in the subject line and body of the e-mail.  Is that possible?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    You can create a new Scheduled Task preference item to solve your requirement.

    I created a scheduled task and that does not provide what I need.  The scheduled task will simple send an mail, but I want to know from which machine or user triggered the email.  I also tried adding the batch file to the scheduled
    task and that did not work even though the scheduled task has the following settings.
    User Configuration >> Prefence >> Control Panel Settings >> Scheduled Tasks
    When running the task, use the following user account
    NT AUTHORITY\System
    Run whether user is logged on or not
    Run with highest privileges  HighestAvailable
    Configure for: Windows 7

  • #include windows.h

    Hi everyone,
    Need some assistance from this growing community. I have
    finally finished coding my C++ application which uses a API dll to
    communication to an external system. This project uses this API dll
    and therefore I must include its header file which refers to
    windows.h for some Data structures, e.g DWORD, HANDLE, BYTE etc.
    However, when I compile it in Alchemy, I get errors about not
    finding the windows.h. Is there a way to compile it in alchemy with
    a #include <windows.h>?
    Are there any special g++ arguments I must use? I have set up
    Alchemy in cygwin.
    Thank you in advance,
    Johnty
    Thanks

    before you go any further you do realise that air won't be
    able to talk to this dll? or is it the code for the dll being
    compiled into a swf with alchemy?
    Either way you've got to remember the alchemy mantra: if you
    can't write the same code in actionscript you can't use alchemy to
    do it (i.e. if it performs system calls that don't map to
    actionscript apis or if it uses wacky inline asm then it won't
    work)

  • Windows Find File can't find Camera Raw.8bi though it's there

    Hi everybody,
    Must be my age, but here it is:
    Windows Find File (the search utility from the Start button in XP) can't find Camera Raw.8bi although it's sitting perfectly inside:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plugins\CS3\File Formats.
    Even *.8bi didn't find it (or any other .8bi file for that matter). The obvious search strings *did* find the couple of archived ACR files I backed up, including the latest, but not the one sitting in it's normal spot.
    I then tried my second PS machine (the laptop) and there the same happened (no ACR file found although its there).
    On both computers ACR 4.3.1 is working correctly. I was just checking their location, because sometimes after a camera file ingest session, Bridge shows some Raw files as generic icons, which also have no metadata, and have "no" after "supports XMP".
    The latter problem aside, maybe someone knows what I'm overseeing in the file find thing.
    No folders or files in the above path are flagged Hidden or System, or anything.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Ok, That's ready (pffft!)
    Now the file find problem. I put a check on the "hidden files" box, an now it actually finds it.
    But it's not "hidden", nor "system". Just "archive".
    So then I looked to see if any of the folders in the path "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plugins\CS3\" was hidden, but no.
    Fine. Heck, I got other things to do. It's not important. Faggettaboutit. Thanks for thinking with me!

  • Trying to restorer a Parallels .pvm file crashes

    Maybe I'm not supposed to let my Time machine backup the Parallels 5.0 windows-xp folder?! Anyway, I can't get Windows XP, in Parallels, to run suddenly. So I decided to try and restore from any previous dates.
    Whenthe Restore process starts, it stalls out in a minute and says error-36 ... and that parts of "WindowsXP.pvm" can not be read ... this is for any previously backed-up Parallels windows-xp.pvm file I have.

    You are correct.
    To Time Machine, the Windoze system is one gigantic file, and TM will likely choke on it, in addition to backing the whole thing up anytime there's the smallest change.
    You need to exclude it from Time Machine (see #10 in hte Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum), and use a Windows app to back it up.

  • Include an HTML file that needs parameters??

    I have a JSP that includes an HTML file template.
    Lets say I don't know all the contents of the HTML at the time. How do I add it?
    Simple Example:
    myHTML.html
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
      <TITLE>myVariablePassedFromJSP</TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    <BODY></BODY>
    <HTML>myJSP.jsp
      String title = "My Title To Display";
      <%@ include file="myHTML.html" %>
      etc...and the result should be
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
      <TITLE>My Title To Display</TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    <BODY></BODY>
    <HTML>

    If the included file can be a JSP instead of a plain HTML file you can use the <jsp:include> tag with parameters. The parameters will become request parameters in the included JSP. You can use them anywhere in the JSP.
    e.g.
    *** 1.jsp ***
    <jsp:include page="2.jsp" flush="true">
    <jsp:param name="title" value="the window title" />
    <jsp:param name="someBody" value="something for the body" />
    </jsp:include>
    *** 2.jsp ***
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <title><%= request.getParameter("title") %></title>
    </HEAD>
    <BODY>
    <%= request.getParameter("someBody") %>
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
    Be careful with includes because you can end up with multiple conflicting tags. For example, if 1.jsp has <html>, <head>, and <body> tags, and 2.jsp does, too, then you may run into a problem.

  • HT1473 External Hard Drive (windows media files)

    Just bought a MAC and I want to "import" my Window Media Files from an external hard drive (western digital) into my iTunes.  I own and copied all of my
    CDs onto this external drive and it works just fine with my Windows PC.  When I connect the external drive to the iMac everything appears as it should.  When I try to "import library" from itunes it doesn't do anything.  No attempt to convert to the Apple format at all.  I can play the music using "Flip4Mac" but this doesn't help in trying to add it to my iTunes.  Any help would be grateful.
    Bill in Wyoming.

    iTunes for Mac doesn't play Windows Media Audio Files. Neither does iTunes for Windows, but it does include a feature that will convert WMA according to your current import settings. Convert your files on your old Windows box before moving them to the Mac.

    Okay, i have 2 bugs with maverick.  First, when I delete a file within a window, the files deletes but the preview doesn't delete until I close the window and reopen it.  Second, I work on a network of computers and the search feature is now buggy...  When I search for a file, A) it asks me if it's a name, or it wont produce anything, and B), its slower than in prior OS versions and in some instances I have to toggle to a different directory and go back to my original directory in the search: menu bar or the search wont produce anything...  Very buggy.

    It appears to me that network file access is buggy in Maverick.
    In my case I have a USB Drive attached to airport extreme (new model) and when I open folders on that drive they all appear empty. If I right click and I select get info after a few minutes! I get a list of the content.
    It makes impossible navigate a directory tree.
    File access has been trashed in Maverick.
    They have improved (read broken) Finder. I need to manage a way to downgrade to Lion again.

  • I have converted most of my windows media files to itunes. However I had to close it down about 3 quarters of the way through. It then processed the album art. How can I convert the files that it didn't finish doing the first time? thanks

    Hi there,
    hope you can help me. I helped my sister convert her window media files to itunes and set up an account for her. Unfortunately her computer is really slow and it was really late and we had to turn it off. It processed some of the album art for the files that it had converted. However, some songs were not converted and because there was quite a few left, I don't really know which ones did not get converted as I selected  all of the folders. How do I find out which ones I have left to convert and put the rest of the songs onto itunes for her please? Or are they on the itunes still as they showed up initially on itunes in the list to be converted.
    Thank you!

    You could convert them all again and then dedupe, or use a Windows search to reveal all the WMA files and then try to work out which still need to be converted. If you're lucky iTunes would have processed the imports in alphabetical path order so it would just be a matter of working out where it had got up to...
