Consequences of purging cache and optimizing

I am running LR 2.5 on two Macs. I keep reading contradictory info about purging the cache. Most articles mention doing this and then have a caveat of but "I wouldn't recommend it." What is the worst case scenario of purging the cache?
Same with optimizing after a back up to another drive-any bad consequences with that?

Optimising the catalog simply tidies it up. I'm not aware of any bad consequences during or after using the Optomize command.
When you purge the cache you're deleting a second set of preview files that are used solely in the Develop module. In their absence the Library preview will be used instead, but it will take a second or so longer to fully render the image. Purging the entire cache will mean that each image will take a second or so longer to fully render. That being said, viewing an image in Develop module will automatically recreate the cached preview if none already exists. Therefore, the performance hit is temporary.
It's also worth noting that if you're Camera Raw cache is still at default size (1GB) and you have many thousands of images in the catalog then there's a good chance your dumping images out of it on a fairly regular basis. The larger the cache the less often this happens. I have mine set to the maximum size (50GB), but would much rather that limit was removed.

Bridge Freezing, Not Displaying Thumbnails, Says Disk Space is Low and to Purge Cache

I'm working in Bridge CS5 on a Mac 0S X version 10.9.2. I have 12 GB of RAM and the server has 240 TB capacity, 76.69 available.
Recently I've received the following error message while processing large photo shoots with both DNG and JPEG files: Bridge is running low on memory. It is recommended that Bridge is restarted.
I have also been manually caching large photo shoots and my cache preferences were set to Keep 100% Preview In Cache and Automatically Export Cache To Folder When Possible. My cache size was set to 500,000. Yesterday, Bridge started to freeze while attempting to open folders. The wheel would spin at the bottom with the message Compiling Criteria. The only way to close Bridge was a Force Quit. This happened several times.
Today, image thumbnails will no longer display, only the DNG/JPEG icons. I received the following error message:
I have tried restarting Bridge while holding the alt/Option key to reset the preferences and checking all three boxes - no luck. I have done the same thing with the boxes unchecked - no luck. I have tried manually purging the cache from its location in the library - no luck. I have tried resetting the cache preferences from the toolbar - no luck. I have tried deleting the cache files from the folders - nothing changes. I have tried purging the cache for each folder from the tool bar - nothing happens.
I need to restore the thumbnails and rebuild the cache for each folder. Does anybody have an idea what is wrong or how to help?

Okay, so I have a solution. If after purging the central cache on the server Bridge continues to not perform normally try emptying the trash. I did this and it worked.

Bridge CC is asking my to 'purge cache'. When I do this doesn't work and freezes my mac. Bridge is unable to work at all. Please help?

Hold down the Option key as you launch Bridge, keep it down until you see a dialog box, then click all three options in the re-set box that comes up.
If you don't see that re-set box, you're doing it wrong, i.e., you're not holding the Option key down fast enough.

Maybe a Preferences reset can help:

Our Bridge has been acting very strange. When I use the burn/dodge tool sometimes it drags and staggers and takes forever to complete whatever I'm burning/dodging. When I try to delete an image from the dock, it won't disappear but it won't display either.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Central Cache is the Bridge Cache.
It's referred as the Central Cache to differentiate it from the individual folder's cache or even the individual image cache.

You must have a Mac. Try this.
Quit Bridge, from user library (NOT system and root library) preferences folder find and delete the com.adobe.bridge5.plist file manual. Do this also in same user library caches folder (Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6) and inhere find and the folder called 'cache' and drag it to the trash.
restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences, then try again.

Bridge CC asks to Purge Cache but freezes when I try to do so

Am using Bridge on a MAC. Each time I open Bridge an error message comes up requesting to Purge Cache via preferences - But when I try to do this, it freezes.
In fact, even before trying to purge cache, if I try navigating to another folder on Bridge it also freezes.
Have trashed Bridge, downloaded it again and reinstalled - problem continues.
What should I do?

I created a new cache folder and deleted the other - and now it works!
I had to show hidden files via terminal to delete the previous cache folder.

HTTP Headers - enabling caching and compression with the portal?

Has anyone configured their web server (IIS or Apache) or use a commercial product to flawlessly cache and compress all content generated by the portal?
Compression and caching is critical for making our portal based applictions work for overseas users. It should be doable, just taking advantage of standard HTTP protocols, but implementing this a complex system like the portal is tricky, we seem to be generating different values in the HTTP Headers for the same types of files (such as CSS).
We are running Apache so can't take advantage of the built in compression capabilities of the .net portal. We are running the java vervion. 6.1 mp1, sql server 2000 (portal, search, collab, publisher, studio, analytics, custom .net and java portlets on remote server).
Basically our strategy is to compress all outgoing static and dynamic text content (html, CSS, javascript), and to cache all static files (CSS, javascript, images) for 6 months to a year depending on file type.

Does Weblogic platform 8.1 supports netscape? We have developed a portal which
works perfectly on IE but it dies in netscape. Is netUI tags not supported in
Netscape?

Like many others, I got the new iPad 3 and couldn't sync all of my photos. The best i got was 1,000 out of 15,000 to work. Today Apple released iTunes 10.6.1.7 and said the syncing issue was resolved. I erased my ipod cache and hit sync. Still locked.

Today Apple released iTunes 10.6.1.7 that , among other things, said it fixed the sync issue with photos. I excitedly, erased my ipod cache and hit sync. It looked like it was working, but just like before iTunes locked. This time at 2,244 of 15,000. Anybody have an idea of how to fix this?

What's the capacity of your iPad?
iTunes needs up to 3x of the actual size of the files you want to sync during the sync process. And syncing 15.000 photos could cross the size of the available free space on your device.
Don't forget that the pictures are now optimized for the retina display, so the size increases for each of them.

We have purged cache as per suggestions from the opening error messages but this has only made matters worse to the extent that now it wont load its previews at all.
Ive reinstalled Bridge three times now. Even after reinstalling Bridge still retains last folder browsed information and will attempt to navigate to that folder regardless what you are trying to select.

MAC CS6 - Update error -- Purge Cache Won't hold

I cannot populate my images as an error occurs upon opening Bridge saying that the cache cannot be read --- I purge the cache--- & it makes no difference - I encounter the same error every time I reopen Bridge -- I downloaded the update & it won't install - Adobe Bridge CS6 5.0.1 Update Installation failed. Error Code: U44M2P7I
Please advise troubleshooting.

There is a way to reset by keyboard including clearing the cache:
Start Adobe Bridge and immediately press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) until the Reset Settings dialog box appears. Select all three options--Reset Preferences, Reset Standard Workspaces, and Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache--and then click OK.
