Consider on purchasing Aperture 2

I am considering purchasing Aperture 2 soon. I recently purchased a Canon Rebel XTI and have been using iPhoto and photoshop to edit the pictures yet I have been hearing a lot of good things about Aperture 2 so I just wanted to think of what you guys thought? Is it an eary transition to move everything over an work with? Should I purchase the apple certified book with it?
I'll apprericate any feedback I can get

Max out the RAM in your MBP and go for it. Aperture on strong hardware is best-in-class.
Should I purchase the apple certified book with it?
I strongly recommend that every digital photog with adequate computer hardware spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 2 (Apple Pro Training Series) by Ben Long, Richard Harrington, and Orlando Luna (Paperback - May 8, 2008), Amazon.com. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual. The time spent learning modern digital image capture workflow via the tutorial is invaluable.
As to "why?" IMO a cursory examination of Aperture usually turns out to be mostly a waste of time, or leads to bad workflow habits or folks simply do not get it. Carefully working the tutorial is by far the best way to learn this new killer app category.
As to someone's comment that LR is likely to integrate better with Photoshop, not true. Aperture round-trips to Photoshop just fine for those few images when PS remains necessary.
Good luck!

  • Purchasing Aperture - Serial?

    Hi all,
Well I'd like to purchase Aperture for my shiny new Mac Book Pro. The shipping time listed online is 3-4 weeks! My question is, if I purchase online, will I immediately get access to my serial code? I have friends with the install disks that I could use, but of course I'd need my own serial.
    Thanks!
    Matthew

If you want Aperture immediately, you might consider purchasing 1.0 retail and then upgrading to 1.01 and then 1.1 on line. See this thread for further information:

I tried the Aperature trial and liked it, but did not purchase it when the trial ended. A few weeks later, i purchased snow lepord and purchased aperture via the app store. I have had not been able to use it since. Each time i open it , afer a few seconds i get the spinning wheel of death and Aperture is frozen. I have to force quit Aperture to shot down mycomputer. I have re-installed Aperture 3 times with th e same result. I have iphoto on my computer as well is this causing the problem? I want my money back!!! Can anyone help?

You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

I purchased Aperture from the App Store several years ago. Now I want to install it on 10.7, but the current version requires 10.10. How can I install an older version of Aperture that will run on 10.7?
    Thanks

Click here and try following the instructions. If they're not applicable, get an Aperture 3 DVD.

  • I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000  photos in my iPhoto Library. Can I import only certain events from iPhoto into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library?

I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000 + photos in my iPhoto Library. I see that I can create a unified library between the two. I am wondering if I can import only certain events from iPhoto (like only 2014 events) into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library? Are there any benefits to bringing the whole iPhoto library over to Aperture (iPhoto is SO SLOW for me, I wonder if it is because I have so many photos). Or, any detriment to only bring a few events over?
And, if I don't merge the two libraries, I assume that means I cannot do it at a later date?
Help. My local Apple store has had very few Aperture workshops, and the next one is like 2 months away.

Thank you so much for this information. Here are some responses/comments:
Disk space - it says 114.43 GB out of 499.25 GB free. I have no idea if that is enough.
    iPhoto version is 9.5.1
Again, I am not sure how to know if I have 3rd party software...but I don't think I do. Is 3rd party software anything non-apple?
I will try rebuilding the library. if that doesn't help, maybe I need more memory...? That is what Apple suggested, but that, of course, means buying something else. I've already bought APERTURE, on their recommendation...
It wasn't, and they told me it was slow because I had too many photos for iPhoto to handle and that I should buy Aperture. Which I did.
What is your iPhoto version? Are you using the most recent version 9.5.1?
iPhoto can handle 20000 photos, no problem.  Your computer can be slow for several reasons:
The most common problem for slowness - insufficient disk space. Don't let your free disk space drop below 20 GB of free space, better more. If the operating system does not have enough working space and the applications you are using, you will notice a very lagging behaviour.
Older or incompatible softweare can cripple your mac. Do you have any older third-party software installed, that might have installed incompatible kernel extensions?
Aperture might be slow or keep crashing, if you imported a corrupted image or incompatible video,  that cannot be processed. Then Aperture will try over and over again to create previews and never succeed.  You could test for this situation, by launching Aperture with the Shift-key held down. This will defer the generation of previews. If Aperture will launch and work better this way, you probably have some bad media in your photo library.
Another problem to check for is a corruption of your Aperture/iPhoto library. You have run the First Aid Tools to repair the iPhoto Library, but have you ever tried to rebuild the library? See this post by Old Toad: Rebuild iPhoto Version 11

I am considering the purchase of an iMac or Macbook and want to know whether I can import my iTunes library of  +400 albums from my Windows PC over my Home Network?  300 of these albums have been imported from CD's, so would not want to have to do that again.

Just copy the entire /Musci/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
The libraries will be identical (date added, ratings, artwork, etc.).
You can do this easily over the network.

  • Backing Up a purchase - Aperture

I have heard n these for a that Apple apps like Aperture are not readily restored from backups of the (say) Aperture.app file. Instead, a re-install is recommended. Is there a way to get a dmg file for my purchase, such that I can re-install it, even when the version is no longer available for sale on the App store?
I know one can re-downloaded as long as it's available, but what about after that?
Or is there some other recipe for preparing a comprehensive backup of all the files associated with Aperture, for the equivalent of a re-install?

If you purchased Aperture then you have a box with a DVD in it. If you've downloaded it from the MAS and it was installed directly rather than downloaded to your computer, then the backup is on the MAS' servers. As far as I'm aware anything downloaded from the MAS is directly installed. That means your only backup is the one you keep of your hard drive.
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • I purchased Aperture 3 about a year ago. I hardly use it because it is so slow.  If I uninstall the sample library, will that help the processing speed to edit pictures?  If so, how do I uninstall just the sample library?

Aperture is a hardware hog. Unfortunately your iMac  has a weak processing unit and relatively weak graphics, both of which are important for Aperture performance. Your iMac will never run Aperture particularly well; it may or may not be adequate for your needs.
I ran Aperture with weak hardware (2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo 2006 Macbook Pro, 3 GB RAM) for years. It was tolerable because I also used a Mac Pro for heavy editing work. With weak hardware we need to optimize everywhere we can. I suggest:
    • Do not bother running Aperture until you add RAM.
    • Before each Aperture session restart the Mac to clear possible memory leaks, and run only Aperture by itself unless you have 6 GB or more RAM on board.
    • Drives slow as they fill so verify that all hard drives are no more than approximately 70% full as a guideline. Even less full is better.
    • Keep the Library size reasonable by using a referenced-Masters workflow with Masters on external drives. Back up originals before import into Aperture or any other images app.
    Good luck!

  • I have aperture 1. When I uploaded Snow Leopard I couldn't open Aperture.Do I have to purchase Aperture 3 or can I just purchase the latest download and have it work?

I have an I Mac and on it is Aperture one. i have all my photos on it. When I bought Snow Leopard, I could no longer use Aperture because it says i can't open it with Snow Leopard. Do I have to buy a brand new Aperture 3 or can  i just download the most recent Aperture 3 download. In other words does the recent download allow me to start using it again, or do I have to go through buying all the downloads?

You can just purchase Aperture 3. If you do this from the App Store it will cost you $80 US but this is still cheaper then buying the individual upgrades.
