Considerations before installing SSD for system only

I Have 3 2 Tb HDD in raid5 via mdadm working wonderfully, providing me of a 4 Tb /home partition.
I just purchased a 128 Gb SSD to use it just for arch installation (root) and I have a couple of questions:
First of all.... I will use syslinux as boot loader... is it better to use GPT over MBR?
Second.... I used to put /boot on a separate partition but, as I have been reading, the less you partition a SSD, the better... so, better just create a single 128 Gb ext4 partition and install all the system there?
I currently have 4 GB 800Mhz RAM, and the machine is used for dwnloading purposes and for browsing and HD movie playback..... I'm thinking about not using a swap partition anymore...
Any recommendations?
Thank you guys!
EDIT1: The RAID5 is using MBR... can I run into trouble if there are some other disks using GPT?

As will plain fdisk these days.  GPT is a better option anyways (unless you lack UEFI and need to boot Windows from the drive), but either major cli filesystem tool will align by default to 2048 sectors.
When I redid my system, I just made / and /boot on my 64 GB SSD (and in hindsight I could probably have gotten away without /boot but meh, ~habit~.  A 100 MB /boot won't do much to the drive either way).  I haven't gotten around to remaking my HDD yet beyond a 4 GB swap partition; I won't know what filesystem to use for the rest of the HDD until I know whether or not I'm reinstalling Windows (the swap partition is mainly for hibernation and Windows 7 can stick its mostly-mandatory page file in it with SwapFS).  My main data storage is over my home network.
As far as data partitions, I tend to put them in /mnt/$HOSTNAME/LABEL - sure, it might be easier to just mount them in $HOME instead of sticking them in /mnt and symlinking if/when needed, but I like to at least maintain the illusion of a multiuser system (or just forgo symlinks altogether and cd in the /mnt tree ...)
Adding the discard mount option can have noticable performance drawbacks; you could instead manually or up a cronjob to run fstrim when you're not actively using the system and such impact would be less noticable.  Pros and cons w/ either method
(As an aside, one thing you can do if you want to do something that'll go somewhat over your 4 GB ram limit - like linking Firefox PGO x64 which uses somewhere around 5 GB - you can use zramswap.  It acts as a high-priority swap and compresses RAM contents when needed.  Slower than plain RAM once you start "swapping" but quite a bit faster than disk i/o!)

I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with SSD for system drive.  Drive stopped booting, but otherwise appeared healthy.  Restored from system backup.  Now drive seems to work properly, BUT my logon password no longer works.  Password OK for account; can access system preferences, and change user password there BUT logon still refuses to accept password.  No luck changing password for that account after adding new administrator account and logging on from that account.  Suggestions?  Thanks.

  • Before installing SSD in macbook pro, should I first partition it through USB?

    Hi there,
I've got the Crucial MX100 as an upgrade from my Hitachi HDD. I don't need to copy anything from the old drive, and I will install Yosemite via usb flash.
I did a bit of research and some people (not mac users necessarily) have had problems in partitioning the SSD after attaching it to the sata port. My question is: would it be recommended to first create a GUID partition through USB on the ssd before installing it in? I think I know the answer to that, and my instincts tell me to trust the Mac, but I want to be sure.
    Thank you!

Even if you have the same name as Grant Pannell the "pioneer" in the starting period of the SSDs, you can not post your statement as the truth.
And it certainly has nothing to do with data integrity. Can you tell me if Apple has something special in their SSD controller or the standard controller ?
If you refer to old SSDs with controllers of 3 or 4 years old, and a pre_Yosemite OS, Trim may have been interesting to install, I did it on all SSds then, and I am using SSDs already for 5 years. but in the last 2 years the SSD controllers are so advanced that - when overprovisioning is enough, trim does not add anything anymore. In Yosemite it is certainly unrealistic to do because you have to disrobe an important layer of security.

  • SSD for system directory (boot drive)?

I'm curious why anyone would recommend an ssd drive for the system directory (boot drive). From what I read about ssd's, if there is a lot of (re)writing to the drive, the performance will degrade with time due to the way ssd's (re)allocate free space. Given that the paging space (backing store) would be on that drive (unless you go out of your way to place it elsewhere) and also the system caches, wouldn't you expect the performance to degrade with time? Yes, you can stick a bunch of memory on the machine and that may reduce paging. But still, over time, I would still expect the performance to still degrade.
So explain to me what's the _long term_ benefit of a ssd drive for your boot device?

Most people when it comes to storage know about StorageReview.
    That's you're assumption.
I've only started researching this question since last week. There's nothing at that site that specifically answers it so I wouldn't be attracted there.
And because I just posted on Thursday a couple long replies on

A search of "storagereview" yields a hit on one of your posts On Sept 4 ("Are SSD harddrives faster ?"), four days before I even joined these forums! Searches here didn't yield anything and I wasn't about to wade through 200 pages of titles if searches didn't yield anything. And I don't know you from Adam so there would be no reason to look for your posts.

  • SSD for boot drive

I've installed a Seagate SSHD hybrid SSD / HD unit and installed Mavericks on it.  Things do run fast.  However,
something worries me a bit.  Since a block of SSD can be written only so many time before it reaches the end of its
life, will the system drive have problems with this.  Unix uses some sort of swap disk to allow more to run than there is sufficient
memory for.  This means sections of memory which are dirty (changed from when the program started) get written out to a
swap file so the memory can be used by other programs.  Windows XP did this as well.  I imagine other modern systems do thet
    same.
Will this cause the boot drive to get more writes than it might otherwise have?
Against this, I observe that the Macbook Air uses SSD for its only built-in drive and that the new MacPro uses SSD for its boot drive.
This leads me to think, that OS X does not do enough writing to the boot drive other than user data files to have a significant effect.
Does anyone know more about this?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

All recent SSDs already incorporate wear leveling in their firmware to extend their longevity as much as possible.
SSDs all have a finite write / erase cycle limit and will eventually fail, but it is reasonable to expect their lifespan should equal or exceed that of conventional hard disks. High capacity consumer grade hard disks should be considered wear items that will require eventual replacement. SSDs are no different, the only question being how much longer they will last in typical, average consumer applications. There is no doubt they are more abuse-proof than HDs and are preferable overall despite having a finite lifespan.
For all practical purposes a HD's capacity eventually becomes too limiting for most users, and require replacement for that reason whether or not they fail. SSDs are no different in that regard.
Unix uses some sort of swap disk to allow more to run than there is sufficient memory for.  This means sections of memory which are dirty (changed from when the program started) get written out to a swap file so the memory can be used by other programs.
Macs have been doing that for ages, well before OS X was as much as a sketch on a cocktail napkin. Mavericks uses a new "memory compression" algorithm to minimize use of mass storage swapfiles entirely. It's light years ahead of XP or anything else.
Apple's Fusion Drive intelligently migrates frequently used data to the SSD. Whether Seagate's hybrid drive it is capable of that is unknown.

  • Recommended SSD for a DV7-2170US

    Hi all,
I bought a OCZ Vertex 3 SSD for my DV7-2170US but Windows 7 is blue screening whilst completing setup.  (Tried everything to resolve it but nothing's working).  My understanding is that AHCI needs to be turned off in the BIOS in order for this part of the setup process to continue and can then be subsequently turned back on after setup has completed.  The problem is the DV7 does not have the BIOS option to turn off AHCI so I'm hooped.
Does anybody have any recommendations on which SSD brand/model would work with this DV7?
    Thanks!

I'm a guru in this area (I do it for clients)  Here's my best advice.  Use SSD for system. Replace optical drive with 7200rpm rotational drive for recording audio.  You can get the bracket from MaxUpgrades.com  Installation is straightforward and the performance is optimal.  They also sell an enclosure for the optical drive you take out.
I've been using Crucial M4 512GB SSDs since release and performance is like day one. However, I only use these drives to READ sample libraries for Kontakt, EastWest, etc.  That is where SSDs excel, not recording audio.  Unless you are recording 16+inputs in one take @192KHz, you don't need high write speed for recording that a 7200rpm drive can't give you.
On that note, I advise you max out your ram.

  • How do you run to Drives on the same screen. I installed a ssd and a hhd to my mac but i can only view the content of the drive only if i boot of that drive. Im try to have my ssd for fast boots and hhd for my music, movies etc. Please help.

I installed a samsung 840 pro SSD to my primary slot and relocated my 1.5 TB HDD to a data double where my optical drive was. I transfered my apps and Mac OS X to my SSD for fast boots and all my itunes movies, music, Iphoto etc to my HDD. I rebooted off my SSD then seen all the data on my HHD itunes movies, music, iphotos etc i cannot view on my SSD. So my question is how do you view all the content on both the ssd and hdd on the same screen with having to boot off one or the other?

No, what I'm saying is that once you boot into OSX, you should be able to see both drives listed.  If you don't then either OSX is hiding the other drive because it sees it as a boot drive and is trying to protect the contents from novice users or there's another problem.  If it's the first thing (i.e. it's a protection thing), then your only option would be to boot into the old drive, copy off all your personal data to an external backup drive, then reboot into the SSD and go into Disk Utilities and wipe/reformat the second drive so that you can see it as a regular secondary drive.  Then when you see it as that, you can copy your data back to it.
Be carefull poking around in Disk Utility as you can easily lose your data.  It's possible the Mac just isn't mounting that second drive because it sees it as another boot drive.  Whatever you do, don't accidentally erase it without getting a copy of your data off of it because you obviously don't have that on your SSD now.

System Builder - just be sure to get 64-bit version, no one needs or wants 32-bit today, and only comes with one, while retail ships with both 32/64-bit media.
you can't install it and activate on different hardware later is all, and by then for what you saved, so what, Windows 8 or SP2 will be out.
A few people had trouble with Windows 7 SP1 for some reason and not sure exactly why, changes to the boot loader on the DVD I presume.

Yeah, just open Boot Camp Assistant, restore the hard drive to a single partition and then redo the partitions again. You should have a bare minimum of about 50GB as @The hatter said. You might want to just divide equally, that's usually the easiest thing to do.

  • GUIDE Install ExpressCache for SSD Caching

After purchasing a M5-481T as well as setting up a M5-581T, I wanted to be able to reproduce the factory SSD caching for these models. They both come with 20GB SSD's that are used for both Intel's Rapid Start technology as well as Diskeepers ExpressCache. After quite a bit of research, I became underwhelemed with Acer's support and provided downloads. While setting up these laptops, I did create the Drivers and Applications DVD's before blowing away the default build. These did not contain the ExpressCache software, nor did the download website. I even called Acer asking for support and I was told that with these models, the SSD drives are not used for caching only for the Rapid Start. The technican I spoke with was adamant about this. To make a long journey short, I was able to figure out how to replicate the default SSD caching in addition to the Rapid Start that comes on the default build of these devices. This should be handy for people that are trying to do clean installs for various reasons. The key to this is to have the ExpressCache software from the default build. The software is licensed to the OEM system builders and without it the software doesn't work. Fortunately for us, if you have the files then your golden. This proves quite difficult when Acer doesn't provide the software to download. Two key items are needed for the ExpressCache install. The software from a different Vendor, and the files from the default system build. I have provided them for you at the following links: ExpressCache Install: http://depositfiles.com/files/l73q0rizhExpressCache Acer Files: http://depositfiles.com/files/68vvduipq Hopefully if you have made it this far, you don't need a guide on how to install software. The idea is simple:1.) Install the Software using the installer from the ExpressCache Install link above. Don't worry if you get a message that says that it couldn't detect the SSD Drive to use. We will fix this later. Don't reboot when prompted to do so.2.) Use the files in the ExpressCache Acer Files download link above to overwrite the ones that were created during the installation in step 1. (copy everything in that download the the program files folder) The location is: C:\Program Files\Condusiv Technologies\ExpressCache\. Once this is done, you may restart the computer.*3.) If you happen to have restarted before completing step 2 above, all you have to do is stop the ExpressCache service and then do step 2. Start the service back up when completed. Now that the ExpressCache software is installed, we need to make a decision. Do you want to use Intel Rapid Start? If you don't care about Rapid Start, the process is much easier. If you do, then go down to the Rapid Start with ExpressCache Instructions. ExpressCache Only: 1.) Open an elevated command prompt and type diskpart.2.) type "list disk" (note the drive number of the SSD).3.) type "select disk n" (n= the drive number found above)4.) type "clean"5.) type "exit"6.) Now that you are back to the normal command prompt, lets navigate to the ExpressCache directory. Do this by typing "cd C:\Program Files\Condusiv Technologies\ExpressCache\"7.) type "ECCmd -partition" (this tells ExpressCache to use the whole SSD drive)8.) Your DONE! to confirm that it is working, you can type "ECCmd -info" and ensure that it starts showing you some caching statistics. Intel Rapid Start with ExpressCache: 1.) Open an elevated command prompt and type diskpart.2.) type "list disk" (note the drive number of the SSD).3.) type "select disk n" (n= the drive number found above)4.) type "clean"5.) type "create partition primary size=NNNN" (NNNN= the amount of memory you have in your system. So if you have 6GB's of RAM, replace NNNN with 6000)6.) type "detail disk" (Note the volume number of the partition that you created in step 5)7.) type "select Volume M" (Replace M with the volume number from the previous step)8.) type "set id=84 override"9.) type "exit"10.) The above steps created a hibernation partition on the SSD drive approximately equal to your RAM. Before you can Install Rapid Start, you will need to reboot the computer or else it will not install. You can do this now or after you setup ExpressCache.11.) Installation of Intel Rapid Start is straight forward. Just download it from the Intel web site and install it. You can also refer to the Rapid Start User guide for the above steps as well as how to configure Rapid Start: Intel Rapid Start (as of 3/21/13): http://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/21612/eng/Rapid_Start_Win7_2.1.0.1002.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=21612&DownloadType=%0a%09%09%09%09%09%09%09Drivers%0a%09%09%09%09%09%09&OSFullname=Windows+8%2c+64-bit*Intel Rapid Start User guide: http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/rapid_start_technology_user_guide.pdf 12.) Now we will setup ExpressCache. Its a little trickier now that we are using Rapid Start.13.) Figure out how much free space you have on the SSD now that the Hibernation partition is created. You need the value in MB. So for example, if you created a hibernation partition of 6000, and the total drive size is 20480, then you have 14480MB left. You can get this information easily in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) by right clicking the SSD drive and selecting Properties. Then go to the Volumes tab. Remember this value for later.14.) If your elevated command prompt is not still open, open it now.15.) Navigate to the ExpressCache directory. Do this by typing "cd C:\Program Files\Condusiv Technologies\ExpressCache\"16.) type "ECCmd -partition X YYYYY" (X is the drive ID and YYYYY is the partition size you wish to create for ExpressCache. In other words, replace X with the drive ID from step 2 and YYYYY with the free space from step 13)17.) Your DONE! To confirm that it is working, you can type "ECCmd -info" and ensure that it starts showing you some caching statistics.  This procedure took me quite some time to figure out and to also get written up. Hopefully you guys find this useful and can benefit from my work. Please also let me know if you run into any issues. Thanks!

As promised, I'm reporting back on my venture - trying to install Intel Smart Response Technology + Intel Rapid Start, but it's not working and I made it work    I have tested, and both technologies are working in tandem, which brings me back to the question: why did Acer spend money on 3rd party software, instead of using Intel's? Anyway.... This is the recipe:Clean all partition in the SSD and the HDD.Install Windows7 on the HDDInstall Chipset INF file and video driver ( not necessary, just to speed up the system )Install Intel Rapid Storage and enable Acceleration ( Intel guide here )Create the hibernation partition on the SSD and REBOOT ( required by Intel Rapid Start, from first post or here )Install Intel Rapid Start Technology softwareI didn't measure the boot time with ExpressCache, but on my experience, the Windows boot is faster with Intel Smart Response. Some notes:I'm able to use the latest drivers from Intel website to theChipset ( 9.4.0.1026 )VGA ( 8.15.10.2712 )Rapid Start ( 3.0.0.1053 )But not for the Rapid StorageTechnology. My Windows 7 64 bits PRO would get stuck on the boot logo animation if I used the latest version ( 12.9 ), it only worked using version 11.7.0.1013 ( link ). Since the Hibernation partition has 3.77GB, and the laptop has 4GB, I can't predict what will happen in the situtation your laptop is using more RAM than the partition has.On my research, I think this wouldn`t be a problem because I have seen on other forums people advising others to use 80% of the system physical RAM to the hibernation file. Regards,HalfBit.
