Considering 24" imac but afraid of Freezing

I am currently considering buying the 2.4ghz 24" imac. It seems like it would suite my needs as a good machine to use for Logic Studio 8. I am scared because i am seeing alot of threads of freeezing. The Question is... Is this a common problem on a majority of the new imacs or is it limited to a select few. If it is limited to a few, is there now a fix? I know the 1.1 update seems to be worse.
Thanks,
Mike

I've not had one single freeze on the 24" iMac.
Remember there are people who come to this site looking for support because they have one kind of problem or another. Then there are others who are on this site to give help and advice.
The vast majority of the posts you see are people looking for support.
I cannot say that if you buy a new iMac now that you will have a similar problem.
When I updated to the 1.1, it actually improved my iMac and runs even faster.
So who is to say if it's common throughout, unless someone did a survey of all those who bought a 24" iMac and find if it is common throughout.
If all the people in the world, who reads the negative posts about freezing iMacs, then Apple would lose a lot of business.
However it's your decision.

  • Considering an iMac, but should I wait?

The more I use my PC, the more I start to miss my old iMac. I just got an iPhone 4S and have been scoping out the potential of Bluetooth 4.0, but I'm not sure if the merits of 4.0 will make much difference to an iMac. I really want to purchase a new iMac, but right now they only have Bluetooth 2.1.
With the advent of Bluetooth 4.0 and its possibilities, would it be worth suffering my PC a little longer to wait for the iMacs to get an upgrade to 4.0, or is it not going to make a difference in the long run?

That decision is totally yours. As you probably know we can't speculate on future products on this forum so there really isn't much to discuss unless you have a technical question.

  • I am considering a Apple iMac but would be interested in adding a second monitor. Does it have to be an Apple monitor or can i add any monitor with a thunderbolt cable and DVI or vGA adapter?

I am considering a Apple iMac but would be interested in adding a second monitor. Does it have to be an Apple monitor or can i add any monitor with a thunderbolt cable and DVI or vGA adapter?

I found that the Thunderbolt input accepts the mini-DVI (in my case converter to VGA for a tutorial use monitor)
BUT, you have to really oush it in 'til it clicks.  I thought it too loose until I tried it.  works just fine!!
i get a solved for my own  LOL

We want to update our second iPhone 4 on one single iMac, but are afraid that the data of the 1st phone will be overwritten when syncing the 2nd phone. What to do?

Create a separate user account for the second phone. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495 (and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2542).

This can be done from Single User Mode. You're going to need a little nerve though since everything is command line based.
    1) Enter Single User Mode by restarting and holding down Command+S on the keyboard. A whole bunch of UNIX stuff will go by on the screen in white text on a black background. When it's done, the command prompt will be sitting at:
    :/root#
    2) Above that, you'll see that it tells you to enter two commands. Run this one first by typing it in and pressing enter:
    /sbin/fsck/ -fy
This does a system file check. A good thing to do in your case as it may be damaged. It could take a while. When it's done, you'll be back at the :/root# prompt.
    3) Enter the second command and press enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    4) Type the following at the prompt:
    cd /Users/name/Desktop
Where it says "name" above, the short name of your user account goes there. If you're not sure what it is, first type:
    cd /Users
    Then type:
    ls
That's a lower case L, not a one. It stands for "list". You'll get a listing of all files and folders in the Users folder. So if your short account name is diane, then the command will be:
    cd /Users/diane/Desktop
After entering that command, the prompt should read:
    :Desktop root#
    Type:
    rm *.jpg
Be very careful to type is exactly as shown. rm followed by a space, then *.jpg. Press enter and all files ending in .jpg will be deleted from the Desktop folder. With 450,000 of them, you could be waiting a while for the prompt to come back.
    Type:
    exit
and press enter to boot back into OS X.

  • HT4597 Can I just choose which apps or photos to sync via iCloud since I don't want all of them in all my devices?  I have all photos & apps in my iMac but only sync manually some of them to my iPad and to my iPhone. Can I still do this with iCloud?

I have 3 Apple devices - iMac, iPhone, and iPad.  I am planning to move to iCloud from MobileMe.  In iTunes, I just choose to sync whatever files I want my iPhone and iPad to have since they don't have sufficient disk space as my iMac.
Can I just choose which apps or photos to sync via iCloud since I don't want all of them in my iPhone and iPad?  I have all photos & apps in my iMac but only sync manually some of them to my iPad and to my iPhone. Can I still do this with iCloud?
Calendars, emails, contacts, are fine since files are small.  What I'm afraid of are the apps and photos.
    Any reply will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

With the exception of photo stream, iCloud doesn't sync your apps or photos between devices. You will continue to sync this content via iTunes in the same way as you do now.
Photo stream allows you to sync your most recent photos between all devices, you have the option to use photostream or not.

  • IMac 8,1 Random Freezing

    Hey guys,
My computer has started randomly freezing in the past few months. As I'd migrated from a MacBook with a lot of crap on it, I tried a reformat, but to no avail. I also thought it might be my RAM as I ran Memtest and it came up with errors, so I replaced my 2 Gb of RAM with 4 Gb of RAM. It was fine for a while, but now the freezing has started again.
Here's a log of a period in which it crashed. I can't pin point exactly where, but I think it might be from 4:59 to 5:00.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
         Thomas.

    Hi Tom,
Unexpected EOF implies you need a Disk Repair or Reinstall.
IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero implies a Graphics problem, haven't nailed all the causes ye, but often associated with Multiple screens.
Sorry, I don't have time to really study the log further at the moment, ut hopefully one of the other freat helpers here will pipe in.

  • Since I upgraded to Lion, my computer (iMac mid 2010) intermittently freezes.

Since I upgraded to Lion 10.7.3, my computer (iMac mid 2010) intermittently freezes.  The mouse moves, but I can't do anything.  I can unfreeze it every time by calling up the Force Quit box and then excaping out.  I've tried everything (all upgrades installed including firmware, new version of Flash), but it still freezes.  Any help is appreciated.

There are a couple of things to do. First is restart in the Recovery Partition and repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility and Repair the Disk. How you do this is when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and choose the Recovery Partition. Choose Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions at least twice. Then while you are in DU run Repair Disk twice. Quit Disk Utility and restart however restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches, it's possible one or more has become corrupt. After it has fully restarted then restart normally and test.
If you get the same behavior post back to try some other items.
BTW how much Free RAM does the machine have. You can find this out in Activity Monitor which is in Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor and click the System Memory tab.

My iMac 10.6.7 freezes at startup or if I click anything, won't restart, key commands don't work, I have to keep shutting it off to restart.....I repaired disc via target mode using a laptop, but access permissions there or by clicking anything on the screen...it spits out the discs that came with it...any ideas?

Make sure the DVDs are not dirty, smudged and/or scratched.

Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • Considering an iMac - A few questions ...

After having used a tower (7200, G4, G5) for every Mac model I have ever owned, I'm considering an iMac this time around. I'm liking the smaller footprint and speed-wise they look up to the task for what I need to do (graphic design, PhotoShop work, Aperture).
    1. For those who follow the release cycle, how likely is it that there will be new iMacs released in the next six months?
    2. Is the glossy screen distracting? I've only seen the models on the floor, with the large overhead lights.
    3. Any experiences with leasing? Pros? Cons?
    TIA

I was really in the same boat - never really having wanted an all-in-one system, so having always had various power macs. However, having taken the plunge and bought a 24" 2.4 iMac for work, I have found it to be a very good system - lots of power, wonderfully sharp, saturated screen, fast performance. So much so, I have also bought one to replace my G5 DP power mac for home.
Performance is significantly quicker than the G5 tower, which in itself is no slouch, and it's difficult to imagine it running out of steam on any task.
    1. For those who follow the release cycle, how likely is it that there will be new iMacs released in the next six months?
It does seem likely to me that the iMac range will get at least some revision in the coming months however, not least because it uses a CPU which Intel are phasing out. Also because it's been in the product range for about 6 months already. Thus if you are looking for a system which is at the cutting edge, and have no immediately pressing need to replace the system you already use, then you might want to wait. On the other hand, the iMac isn't exactly cutting edge, anyway and if you are in the market for a system to fulfill your needs, buying one of these and finding that it gets replaced by a newer model in a couple of months or so matters very little - as long as it continues to meet your needs.
    2. Is the glossy screen distracting? I've only seen the models on the floor, with the large overhead lights.
I don't find it distracting at all, though some clearly do. My office has 6 fluorescent strips and a light source directly behind my desk. With the iMac off or sleeping, it's like looking in a darkened mirror and the immediate impression is that the system would be totally unusable. However, when switched on and running, the reflections just vanish.
What seems obvious is that this does not happen for all users, so the only credible advice would be to at least have a look at one before you buy, or buy from a source which will allow you to return it if you're not happy. Chances are good that instead of the glossy screen creating disturbing reflections, it'll prove itself to give you saturated colors, sharp focus and very positive experience, but you really need to give yourself an opportunity to find out which before you buy!

  • IMac G5 2.0 freezes within minutes of startup

My iMac G5 2.0 freezes within a few minutes of starting up. By "freezes" I mean the spinning beachball appears, and the computer will not respond. This is often preceded by a distinct "metronome" kind of ticking (it sounds like the hard drive freaking out, but I don't know for sure). I have run all software updates (10.4.8). I zapped the PRAM - no change. This has been getting worse for a while. I used to think it was a particular program, like Mail or Safari, but now it crashes with either one, before I can even open them both. I have read many other posts, but none of them mention the beachball (I am not getting any error screen at all), and none of the mention the metronome/ticking sound. Help!
    iMac G5 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for the quick reply. My computer does not fall within the repair program (my iMac is a 17-inch, EMC 2055), and I am not under AppleCare (my iMac is 19 months old). I don't think the hard drive is dying, because I have heard the sound once in a while since I first got the computer (I guess it's possible that it was bad from the beginning). If it is the power supply, any idea how much that will cost me?

  • I have a mac air and an iMac and both have Pages. I use Pages on my air and save all documents to iCloud. I can see them on my iMac but it won't open with Pages. It becomes visible if I change it to open with preview but I can't interact with it.

I have an mac air and an iMac 5k - pages runs on both.  I use pages on my air and save all my documents to iCloud drive. I can see the documents on my iMac but some won't open in pages which is bizarre? They will open if I change it to open with preview but then all I can do is read it  - I can't add to the document - All I want is to be able to see all my documents on all my devices and to be able to have them sync so I can add to the documents from  any of my devices. I also have an iPhone 6 and an iPadair2 but I would be happy just to have the iMac and macair sync for starters. I have folders within folders in my documents,. The folders which contain pdf's and individual files open OK . The one I am having difficulty with is the file which I use for ongoing correspondence - in other words it is quite long - I keep adding to it  ( by copying letters in and letters out so I can see a sequential history of what has been going on by scrolling down ) in date order so that it could be 1 - 100 pages long - but I don't think the size is a problem. I don't understand why some folders can open and others not . Has anyone any suggestions please. I have been trying to get this to work for months since iCloud drive came in. It has got much better but it is still not good enough  - or maybe it's me?

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.
