Considering an iMac, but should I wait?

The more I use my PC, the more I start to miss my old iMac. I just got an iPhone 4S and have been scoping out the potential of Bluetooth 4.0, but I'm not sure if the merits of 4.0 will make much difference to an iMac. I really want to purchase a new iMac, but right now they only have Bluetooth 2.1.
With the advent of Bluetooth 4.0 and its possibilities, would it be worth suffering my PC a little longer to wait for the iMacs to get an upgrade to 4.0, or is it not going to make a difference in the long run?

That decision is totally yours. As you probably know we can't speculate on future products on this forum so there really isn't much to discuss unless you have a technical question.

  • Wanting  to move up from panther but should i wait????

i am wanting to move on from panther, i like some of the stuff from tiger, widgets, etc. but should i wait for the new lepoard?? it looks really cool!!! if tiger is in fact much nicer than panther i wouldnt mind spending the money now and then again when lepoard comes out. but if tiger isnt that great than i would rather wait. what do you all think, do you like tiger enough to switch now and again in 6 months? (providing they do launch it in the spring) thanks for any advice....

If youdo upgrade to tiger make sure you have at least 1gb of RAM if you are planning on doing more than web browsing and using itunes.
I had 768mb in my work dual 1.25 G4 and it flew with Panther. When i put tiger on it crawled until i upgraded to 2gb. A couple of the guys in my office use 1gb for quark, photoshop, indesign etc and they get by just fine..... although it drives me up the wall using their machines when they are on holiday as i have to keep quitting programs to stop it slowing down too much.

  • I want an iPhone bad, but should I wait???

Do I wait? I've been with Verizon for 10 years now, and I'm completely obsessed with the iPhone. Their version, the Voyager, is junk compared to the iPhone. My house is full of Mac products, and the only thing missing now is the iPhone.
I like the current version. I've had an opportunity to play with it some. However, I always seem to be the guy who buys an apple product and two weeks later there is something newer, better, and cheaper.
It is my understanding that the new iphone won't be out till the end of 3rd quarter 08. So probably at least 6 months at this point.
Is the new version going to be that much better where I should hold off? I hate to buy this one for $400, and then drop another $400 in 6 months. If the changes will be huge, maybe I'll wait then. If not, then I guess I'll head down to the apple store today
    Any advice?

As with a computer - if you need or want it now, get it now since a new and improved model is always in the works. Based on needs or wants, you purchase now and Apple introduces a new model two weeks or two months from now, it does not make the product you purchased obsolete and unusable.
As soon as Apple released the iPhone on 6/29 and probably before, the 2nd generation was already in the works and the same will apply with the 2nd generation iPhone is released. The only thing we know for fairly certain is the 2nd generation iPhone will be a 3G phone but other that this, no one knows and if you don't live in an area where AT&T has 3G network coverage, having a 3G iPhone won't make any difference.
It is my understanding that Apple must get another round of FCC approval for a 3G iPhone which I don't believe Apple has requested this yet which is public information and if this is required and the 2nd generation will be 3G, there isn't much chance that Apple will release the 2nd generation iPhone within the next two weeks or months. It could be anytime after the FCC approval and the end of this year or this could be delayed until early 2009.
If you can wait which is waiting for the unknown and this won't be known until Apple makes an official announcement along with not knowing when, then wait but if you really need or want it now then get it now. You can always use an activated iPhone as an internet device via a Wi-Fi connection and for iPod use without a SIM card when the 2nd generation is released or there is a good used market for iPhones which you can recoup some of your money to go towards the 2nd generation.

  • Want to buy a new Mini, but should I wait for Snow Leopard?

I'm ready to buy a Mac Mini now. But with Snow Leopard just around the corner, I would hate to have to dish out another $129 for Snow Leopard when I could have just waited a few months for it to ship with the Mini.
Is it worth it to wait, or should I just dive into a new Mini with just Leopard?
Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the great input everyone!
Most of you say 'go for it now', and that's the way I'm leaning, but I'll drill down a little deeper with where I'm at on this.
I've been wanting to get a Mini since they first came out, but more intently since last fall. I heard that they were due for a refresh, and rumors had been floating that there would be new models in Q1 of 2009. I had hoped to see them at Macworld, but we all know what a disappointment that was. So after much anticipation, they're finally here. All that to say, I have a very strong desire to order one right now.
But then there is this question of Snow Leopard. My main reason (although there are many) for getting a Mini is to record my broadcast TV shows in HD with eyeTV. I've been using my Dual 867Mhz Power Mac G4 (MDD) to record shows in analog mode with eyeTV, and it does it very successfully. But my G4 doesn't meet the requirements to record in HD (although I've tried it and it will record HD, but it's not always successful and it takes at least 12 to export it to iTunes). Also, broadcast TV is going to can analog on June 12. So I wont be able to record my shows after that unless I have the Mini.
So, here is where I'm at with this dilemma:
AndyO hit the head on the nail with this

There is a good argument to say that if you have no immediate need for a new system, you should wait until Snow leopard is announced, but not yet pre-installed on systems in the supply chain and buy a system then. That would give you an installed copy of Leopard and either a Snow Leopard upgrade disk in the box, or an 'up-to-date' program option to buy a Snow Leopard copy for a small fee. That would give you the best of both worlds.
This is exactly what I'd like - "the best of both worlds." Getting SL with the Mini but not having it pre-installed would be ideal.
But will the announcement come at the WWDC?
Will the WWDC be held at the speculated date of June 6-12 (which is right before the DTV switch btw)? And even if I wait for the announcement, this is not the guaranteed outcome (they could end up saying that all systems will be shipping with SL today).
    Ugh! I'm so torn.
Does anyone know how far ahead they announce the date of the WWDC?

  • Considering 24" imac but afraid of Freezing

I am currently considering buying the 2.4ghz 24" imac. It seems like it would suite my needs as a good machine to use for Logic Studio 8. I am scared because i am seeing alot of threads of freeezing. The Question is... Is this a common problem on a majority of the new imacs or is it limited to a select few. If it is limited to a few, is there now a fix? I know the 1.1 update seems to be worse.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I've not had one single freeze on the 24" iMac.
Remember there are people who come to this site looking for support because they have one kind of problem or another. Then there are others who are on this site to give help and advice.
The vast majority of the posts you see are people looking for support.
I cannot say that if you buy a new iMac now that you will have a similar problem.
When I updated to the 1.1, it actually improved my iMac and runs even faster.
So who is to say if it's common throughout, unless someone did a survey of all those who bought a 24" iMac and find if it is common throughout.
If all the people in the world, who reads the negative posts about freezing iMacs, then Apple would lose a lot of business.
    However it's your decision.

  • So, Should I wait?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask this, but should I wait to buy an iPhone? I went to my local Apple Store to play around with an iPhone, but I still don't know if I should wait for something better or for the iPhone to go down in price. (Example: I purchased my MacBook in November 2006, and now they have even faster MacBooks for the same price that I paid for) What should I do?

I do feel that the iPhone is incomplete in terms of features but that can be easily changed by software updates. Buy it now if you like.
Apple don't discount their products months after its released. They release a newer version of that product for generally the same price.

  • Should I wait to trade in my 4s?

I have AppleCare, and I also have a white spot on my screen. I can live with this for now, but should I wait a year or so, right before I upgrade, and then return it under warranty for a new one, with a higher resale value?  Or is that Bad warranty relations or something?

I see no reason to wait. I don't think that your iPhone would have any significantly higher resale value at the end of the contract if you wait to replace your defective unit until then or replace it now, unless you're hard on your phones and it's therefore subject to cosmetic damage. It's totally up to you, though; Apple won't care.
    Regards.

  • Should I wait till after Macworld?

I'm basically ready and have the funds to get my Mac Pro Logic setup, but should I wait till after Macworld? I practically live down the street from where it's happening.
Will there be any price drops on the current models, if they announce a new lineup?

should I wait till after Macworld?
    Yes.
Will there be any price drops on the current models,

No-one knows, but we'll all find out in less than a week. Definitely wait.

  • My battery drained. Screen shows battery with red line but doesn't seem to be recharding after 20 min.  Should I wait or do a hard restart? I haven't backedup in ages and don't want to lose pics, contacts etc.

    Agree with Richard:
-Your device needs both the CR and LF. To accomplish this:
option 1: Concatenate the "end of line" string constant (this is a combination of CR and LF, located in the string pallete) to all your outgoing commands. Make sure in the "Visa configure serial port" the "Termination character enable" flag is false.
option 2: Concatenate only a CR to your command's strings. Make sure in the "Visa configure serial port" the "Termination character enable" flag is TRUE AND that the termination character is set to 10 (meaning LF) which I think is the default.
Details can be seen in this link:

"Adding Termination Characters to VISA Serial Writes in LabVIEW"
Interesting would be to configure the serial port to accept not one but two termination characters. The above links refers to the document "Developer Zone Tutorial: Termination Characters in NI-VISA.", where this is supposed to be possible. The document however is 404'ed.
If someone find a working link please post it.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Preferably your iTunes account, but it shouldn't really matter for getting homesharing turned on, as long as it's a valid ID.

  • I am considering a Apple iMac but would be interested in adding a second monitor. Does it have to be an Apple monitor or can i add any monitor with a thunderbolt cable and DVI or vGA adapter?

I am considering a Apple iMac but would be interested in adding a second monitor. Does it have to be an Apple monitor or can i add any monitor with a thunderbolt cable and DVI or vGA adapter?

I found that the Thunderbolt input accepts the mini-DVI (in my case converter to VGA for a tutorial use monitor)
BUT, you have to really oush it in 'til it clicks.  I thought it too loose until I tried it.  works just fine!!
i get a solved for my own  LOL

  • If I bought an ipod touch 4th Gen in the USA but live in the UK should i wait to register it in the UK before using it?

My nephew has bought a new ipod touch in the US while visiting me on vacation but is goiung back to the UK in a few days.  Can he register it here and then still use it there or should he wait until he goes back to the UK?

    Hi
It should be okay to activate it in the US as I think you can choose your country when you set the iPod up and if it does go wrong, you can always wipe it and start again in UK.

    1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?
