Considering AppleTV, not enough HDMI ports

I really want to get an AppleTV, because I've got a boatload of iTunes TV and movie content on my Mac, that I want to watch on my TV. Also, some things like the NHL package and other stuff is kind of cool.
But, I've got an HDMI port problem, and I'm trying to figure out what to do.
My sound system has 2 HDMI IN ports, 2 optical sound ports and 1 HDMI OUT ports. Both HDMI IN's are being used, and the HDMI out goes to my TV
I have Airplay set up with my Airport Express that uses a AUX line from the AE to my sound system. I either play music from my iPhone/iPad or directly from my iMac.
My TV has 3 extra HDMI IN ports. But it has lousy sound (hence the sound system).
I was thinking that the best solution would be to run an HDMI from AppleTV to my TV for video, and use an optical cable to run sound to my sound system. I just want to make sure that this will work, that AppleTV is smart enough to know that the HDMI is just for video and the optical is going to carry the audio stream.
Alternatively, I was thinking that video would still go through the HDMI to my TV, but audio would go through Airplay through my Airport Express? I'm worried that there would be just enough of a delay between the video and sound through WiFi to put my video and audio out of sync.

OM
I have Apple TV with HDMI to my TV which I get video and sound via the TV.  I also have opical audio to the soundbar from Apple TV.  I can use just HDMI for video and sound through tv, HDMI for video (turn tv sound to 0) and soundbar for audio via optical audio or even just audio from the soundbar with TV off (need tv on to navigate frst!!).  Apple TV 2 with Samsung TV and soundbar all works great.
So short anser, yes your idea should work, just the apple TV won't know the HDMI is just video, you have to turn the TV sound off yourself.!

  • Can I Hook an Apple TV to an older TV that does not have HDMI Ports using a connector cable

I have an older Sony HD TV and would like to hook my Apple TV to that TV but it does not have HDMI Ports.  Can I hook my Apple TV to this TV through a cable adapter that converts HDMI to Component Video and Audio (Red Green Blue Video Cables, Yellow White Audio) or HDMI to S-Video.  I have both these connections on my TV.  Thanks

Thanks, I actually meant a converter box I just wanted to make sure that using that would work.  With Amazon FireTV Sticks for example I  jhave been told that only a direct HDMI connection to the TV would allow the device to work at all.

  • Not enough USB Ports for charging ipod ?

not enough USB Ports for charging ipod ?

If all your ports are in use, try buying a USB hub, they are inexpensive and will give you several more ports.  Google for them.

  • Not enough Ethernet ports

Airport Extreme only provides three Ethernet LAN ports, which is not enough. Is it possible to daisychain an Airport Extreme to another Airport Extreme? If so, how?
    Thanks.

I assume that an Ethernet "hub" is the same thing as an Ethernet "switch"?
No, that is not the case. A hub splits up or divides the available bandwidth among connected devices. So, if you have 4 devices connected, each device would receive 1/4 of the available bandwidth.
A switch delivers full bandwidth to each connected device.....much better performance. For that reason, a switch was traditionally quite a bit more expensive that a hub. Luckily, that is not the case any longer. For a $10-15 dollar premium, you can get a Gigabit Ethernet switch, instead of a hub.
am I also correct that in order to get Gigabit Ethernet from the Extreme and/or the hub (or switch), I will first have to be sure that my modem isoutputting via Gigabit Ethernet?
I doubt that you can find a Gigiabit Ethernet modem. Even if you could, your signal is only going to be as "fast" as the plan that your provider will allow.  Typically, that might be 20 Mbps.......while Gigabit is 1,000 Mbps.
The advantage to having Gigabit speeds on your "local" or "private" network is that file transfers or copies between devices will occur much more quickly.
Your Internet connection will never be any faster than your plan allows.

  • Not enough physical ports - error message??

    Hi
I just started to get an error message dialog box when I open Soundtrack Pro on my quad core G5. The message says "the current output device does not have enough physical ports for this document. Some outputs may not play back as a result".
I don't understand this - can anyone help. If I click OK then for sure, not audio comes out of STP.
Running version 1.1 on OSX 10.4.10
This hasn't happened before. It happens either when I open a new STP file with nothing in it, or when sending from FCP.
    Thanks

First of all, thanks for the replies.
I gave it another try today; I deleted the old files and ripped them to my computer again, this time using Windows Media Player instead of iTunes. I tried transferring them to my iPod again and this time it worked. As always iTunes had to convert them to files that it could read, but then it took just a few seconds and all of them made it to my iPod.
I don't know what the problem was the first time around. I checked the file sizes, and the largest was 4.2 MB. There were about 11 songs. It was just a typical audio CD and its total length was 44 minutes.
I guess from now on I'll just import CDs with Windows Media Player and then let iTunes convert them so that I can have even more files on my computer. Oh well. If that's what it takes... Sometime when I have a lot of time to fool around I'll try to see if something is going wrong when I'm importing them with iTunes.
    Thanks again for the responses!

  • Not enough USB ports!

I have 3 USB ports on my G5 and 4 things that need to be powered directly off them (the keyboard; a DigiDesign M-Box; a Mackie Baby HUI; and a 4-port hub). How can I get this to work all at once? I’d rather not have to un-plug the 4-port hub every time I want to use the Mackie mixing board.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!

I have been a strong advocate for more rear panel ports (fat lot of good it's done!) for years. USB expansion on Macs is terrible. I have a box full of PCI USB cards from Sonnet, Adaptec, Belkin, IO Gear, NEC, you name it. Red ones, yellow ones purple ones, big ones, small ones, 2 port cards, four port cards, five port cards....not one "works without issues". Some will allow the computer to sleep as long as nothing is connected to them. With others, the computer will not even boot. I could buy another Mac with what I've spent on these 'effing things. And don't give me that bull about the display and keyboard ports either. The display ports can be just as problematic as the expansion cards and the keyboard ports while convenient for things like a mouse or PowerMate, are low power and cannot support things like media card readers. The front port is very handy for temporary connections but who wants a cable sticking out of the front of their computer all the time?
All of this could be avoided by simply providing 4-6 rear panel ports like the other computers have. For what Apple charges for their machines, it would not, I am sure" break the bank".

  • Dual Displays, not enough firewire ports?!

My MacPro isn't here yet...and I only have 1 cinema display right now but plan on adding a 2nd one in a few months.
In my anticipation for the Mac to be dropped of by FedEx, I noticed something while reviewing the specs...
My video card, the ATI Radeon X1900, has two DVI ports (so I can do two 23" or whatnot). If I use the my 23" Cinema Display, I can plug in the USB, the Firewire & the DVI connector.
However!! If I get a 2nd 23" Cinema Display, there's room for another DVI port and USB but NO firewire port. There's only ONE 400 FW port on the back of this machine?!?!
What do you all do if you're dual displaying it w/ Apple displays??

Well, the Firewire cable/port in the monitor is only there as a hub/extender, it doesn't affect the working of the monitor itself. So you can always attach the cable from the second monitor into the Firewire port of the first monitor. It depends how many other Firewire devices you need to add.

  • Not enough USB Ports for non-hub-friendly Peripherals

Several of my USB 2.0 devices require being plugged directly into the computer and aren't hub friendly. Unfortunately there are more of these type devices than there are USB ports.
    Solution?

Are you using a powered hub?
I have never heard of that problem before.

  • Can Apple TV be used on a HDTV without HDMI port? If yes, what is needed for setting up?

I have a Sony wega HDTV, and it does not have HDMI port, does anyone know if I can use Apple TV on it? If so, how is it set up?

Current AppleTVs require a TV with HDMI.
You may find some dubious adapters out there which purport to convert to other formats.
If your Tv has VGA in and an audio input you might want to look at:

  • HT1586 Is it possible to connect my Apple TV to a TV withouth an HDMI port

I have just bought an Apple TV but my TV does not have a HDMI port - can i use it on this TV and if so what connectors do i need?

Hi @kateaird.Welcome to Apple Support Communities, and congratulation on your new Apple TV.
Unfortunately the latest generations of Apple TV only output video through an HDMI port. While the first generation also had component video and RCA stereo audio ports, they were removed in the second generation.
However, there are HDMI to 3RCA 3-RCA Video Component converter which you can purchase, to connect your Apple TV to a TV that does not have HDMI port.
    I hope that helps.

  • Older Projection TV without HDMI ports

    Hello,
I was recently given a 65 inch HDTV ready Projection screen tv.  Here is the link for the model. http://dprojection-hdtv.blogspot.com/2011/07/toshiba-65h82-65-inch-169-hdtv-ready.html.  It is I would like to say 7 years old and does not have hdmi ports.  I have a lot of videos on my Xbox 360 that I would like to play on it.  I am using the HD composite cable for it right now and it just isn't as clear as I would want it to be.  Is there anything I can do? Is there something that converts component cables to HDMI? If someone could help that would be greatly appreciated!!

I had one of those! It was a fantastic TV at the time. You could really get a spectacular picture out of them, howerver....it's a 10 year old CRT RPHDTV so you're probably not going to get a great picture out of it anymore. You're going to deal with two issues:
    1) Phospor aging is the first. There are three color guns inside that TV, as the R/G/B phosphors age, they lose brightneess and produce a less accurate image. The typical lifespan of those TV's is about 10 - 12 years depending on how it was used.
    2) Convergence is the second. The three color guns need to be 'aimed' correctly to produce a clear image. The 'touchfocus' button on the front of the TV will start an auto-convergence cycle, then you can manually adjust the convergence in the TV's menu system.
    Good luck.

  • No HDMI port

Two years before I buy G570 from Fry's. Today I need connect my computer to HDTV by HDMI output but alas there is no HDMI port . There is three side by side USB (one of them different appearance)  , one RJ45 and one VGA  connector at the left side. Between USB and RJ45 there is no HDMI connector.
          İs it normal ?
          Can I add a HDMI port ?
    Thanks

    hi Psawed,
If the system does not an HDMI port it means that a transcoder is not included in the Board and VGA Port cannot output a Digital Signal. Only analog.
What you'll need is an external Signal transcoder, From VGA analog signal to HDMI Digital Signal.
You'll need one of these VGA to HDMI Tanscoder.
    Hope this helps,
    Cheers!

  • Location of HDMI port on a Touchsmart 600 PC

A technician from the cable company once said that we should buy an HDMI cable to run from the PC to the cable box. I see the HDMI port on the cable box, but don't see such a port on the PC. Does anyone know if an HDMI port exists on the Touchsmart 600, and if so, how to access the port? Thanks.

  • HDMI port in Nexus 2000

All models of the nexus 2000 has HDMI port
Installation guide says it is for console connectivity. There was no special cable supplied with Nexus 2000.
anyone tried to use that port? I want to what type of cable connector to use to console in to the FEX. Anyone knows what type of cable to use??
I know FEX can be consoled in using attach fex 101 command on parent switch but then what is purpose of this HDMI port.

    Krunal,
It is not an HDMI port, though it kind of resembles one.  This port is utility port used by manfucaturing & TAC.  As the N2K is managed by the N5K which has your traditional console port, it's not necessary for console access direclty to the FEX.  It's stictly for diagnositcs.  These ports are standard on FEXs including the IO Modules within a UCS Chassis.
These cables are not supplied to customer or available for purchase.
    Regards,
    Robert

  • I have an Pioneer HD TV, but it does not have the HDMI port and it only has a USB connection?  Can I still hook up my Apple TV to my TV?

I just got an Apple TV (the newest black one) and I have an older Pioneer HD TV.  I noticed that I don't have a HDMI port on the TV and only a USB connection.  My question is, can I still hook up the AppleTV to my TV with other connection wires and will it still allow me to use my ITunes music, photos and Netflix with the same picture and sound quality?
    Thank you!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV will not work over USB, the only type of connection supported is HDMI.
