Considering move to MacBook Pro

I have a G4 Quicksliver I have used for graphics for years. When I moved to freelance work a year and a half ago I purchased a Dell Inspiron 9300 because I was focusing on PowerPoint presentations and 99% of my clients used Windows. I have Virtual PC but it's just too slow.
With the advent of the Intel-based machines I think it would be great if I could sell both of my current machines and move to a single 17" MacBook Pro. I do need a laptop because I travel some for work.
Does this make sense? In addition to PowerPoint, I use PhotoShop (CS2) Illustrator 10, Quark 6.5, and some Word and Excel, along with Outlook and the occasional sound/video editor. Would I have to buy new software? Can I use my XP installation disks to install XP on the Mac? Can all my files from both my current machines be moved to a new machine without too much trouble? I am just not sure what to consider in making the move and I can't afford to drop thousands on new software.

In addition to what a_brody has said...
I have seen these same complaints concerning PPT Mac vs. PC, and responders have very clearly stated that Keynote presentations saved in PPT format are actually more compatible with PCs. In fact, the feedback I have seen indicated that Keynote presentations far exceeded similar PPT presentations in quality and compatibility. I don't use either, so I cannot speak directly to this. I'm sure someone will happen along who can give first-hand information.
Regardless of this, Let's keep in mind that you can always install Windows, in either Bootcamp or Parallels. Since your new MBP will come with 30-day trials of both Office and iWork, you have time enough to make a comparison and trial of both Keynote and Powerpoint, and to discover for yourself exactly what issues (if any) you might encounter. If it came to it, I might even be willing to let you try Keynote on my machine before you purchase (I'm in Orlando, but I frequently travel to Tampa for a couple days at a time).
What I am suggesting is that you give it a go without installing Windows, at least for a few weeks, and I'll tell you why. My sister only recently "switched" herself, in spite of the fact that she is a professional photographer in the Atlanta area, and I have been after her to "go Mac" for several years. Typical of her, she called me to ask about my recommendations as she was on her way to an Apple store, after she had made just about all her decisions regarding her purchase. Also typical, she ignored everything I had to say, and purchased Parallels along with her new 24" iMac, then immediately installed Windows.
Well, as soon as she started using the iMac, she realized that she had cut her turnaround on photo shoots down to less than 1 week, from as much as 6 weeks when she used her PC. Also, she quickly realized that she had absolutely no need for Windows. I'm sure she would tell you that the money and effort she expended on installing Windows was a complete waste.
As far as portage of files, the issues are few and far between. Any NTFS-formatted volumes you have can be read by OS X (though not written to), so transferring files to the Mac is simple. Going the other way requires a FAT-32 volume, so that files can be written from OS X.
Search on versiontracker.com for a shareware app called "Outlook2Mac." You will need this application on your PC to export Outlook data to a format that can be transferred to the Mac and imported into Mail, Address Book, iCal, etc. Just about everything else will take care of itself.
As you are a current Mac user, I know I am preaching to the choir concerning the benefits of throwing Windows... out the window (;-)). What you have not experienced, however, is the speed and power of these new (Intel) Macs, and it appears from your profile that you have not experienced Tiger, and all that it brings. If you absolutely need Windows, there is no reason not to install it, but I am suggesting that you give Windows-free computing an honest try. Since you do still have a separate PC, there is no reason why this "trial period" need affect your business. If, after a few weeks, you find that you absolutely cannot stick exclusively to the Mac, then go ahead and Install Windows on it and dump the Dell.

For transferring videos you could use 'Video Transfer App'. I'm the developer of this universal application (iPhone/iPad) that let's you transfer videos from your iPad or computer directly to another iPhone or iPad.
The app is currently in the Top 25 iPad apps in the photography category.
Here are couple of videos that show how the app works:

  • Does it worth to move from macbook pro to macbook pro retina?

    Hey
    I have macbook pro with
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
and its good but many people are saying macbook pro 2013 with retina display is the best laptop and has many features so do you advice me to move from macbook pro to macbook pro 2013 with retina display?
    thanka

It's a very sweet machine, of course. Although the upgrade path is a bit dicey. Just my opinion, but unless you have very demanding graphics needs (in which case you probably should have a desktop system with a huge monitor), I don't see the point of spending all the money. Probably you would get more value if you take your current machine and max out the RAM and get an SSD.
It's hard to advise anyone in such matters via the internet.

  • Considering buying a MacBook Pro

I'm considering buying a MacBook Pro once I get a job, which should be soon, and I was wondering how I can have it connected to the internet with my wireless router. There are two PCs in my house and they will still be in use once I buy one so there will already be a wireless router anyways. I'm not sure if I'm making sense but any help is appreciated.

Your MBP will be perfectly compatible with your existing network. The MBP will connect to your wireless router, ask it for an IP address (query the DHCP server), and be able to access internet services just as all the other computers on the network. You will even, depending on the setup of your network, be able to share files with the MBP using the shared folder system. The era of Mac incompatibility is long gone.

  • Since Yosemity and new iTunes i cannot play movies on macbook pro (missing HDCP ability)? Why is that?

Since Yosemity and new iTunes i cannot play movies on macbook pro (missing HDCP ability)? Why is that?
    regards Peter

Yesterday I had Apple phone support, they could partly solve the problem. At least I can use my Mac again to view movies but the problem of less resolution in itunes only is still there. My brother has the same macbook, same yosemity and same itunes. It works. Obviously it has to do with other SW on the Mac. Yesterday we removed Displaylink SW (i believe that was the name of the SW?) from my Mac. Perhaps it is not yet compatible with yosemity?

    Hello there, Whitea08sd.
Something you might want to verify if HD content is available in your country's iTunes Store. The following Knowledge Base article has a great chart that outlines availability of products:

  • Should I switch to Mac?   Considering the New Macbook pro 13"

    Hello,
I am not a mac user and am contemplating switching to mac as I am looking forward to get a new laptop.
I am considering getting a Macbook pro 13" the basic model but I also came across a Sony Vaio 'E' series laptop. The Sony has full HD screen, 500 GB, blu ray drive and an i3 processor. The rest of the specifications are similar to the mac.
Moreover the Sony with its better specifications is a bit cheaper than the mac.
I cannot decide on whether to switch to mac or just get the Sony Vaio.
Hope you guys can help me out in making a decision.
    Thank you.

    Zane.a,
Welcome to Apple Discussions. I won't go into the specifics of the Sony you are looking at because specifications mean very little, what is important is the experience of using a PC and the experience of using a Mac. Many PC users tend to get hung up on computer specifications, which CPU, RAM, Graphics Card, etc.. One thing you cannot do on a PC is run OS X where with a Mac you can run both OS X and MS Windows. In fact there are several excellent solutions (Fusion, Parallels & Bootcamp) for doing so. In addition Mac's tend to have better build quality and certainly have better resale value.
Apple has some sites I would recommend you look over. One is called:
    Switch 101
    and the other is
    Mac 101
These sites provide useful tips, information and videos.
While Windows 7 is a good OS however it still doesn't have the same experience as OS X. With Windows 7 you still have to worry about about malware including virus's and pay annual fees to keep your antivirus software up to date.
If you need support Apple has the best in the industry. Here in the US when I need help I get someone within 30 seconds on the phone that is local, isn't reading off a script and generally is knowledgeable. Over the years when I've had occasion to call my question is almost always handled on the first call. When I used to own PC's when I had to call support I dealt with someone that frequently was nice but didn't have the knowledge and I also had language barriers and had difficulty understanding. I know it was frustrating for me and must have also been frustrating for the engineer I was dealing with.
Remember specifications are just that and many times have nothing to do with the user experience. What I'd recommend is spending time with both platforms in a store and then decide for yourself which one best suits your style.
If you choose a Mac great, if you don't I hope you enjoy your Windows machine.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • How do I convert MP4 file to AVI or MOV using MacBook Pro (2010)

I am 10.6.4 new user on a new MacBook Pro. This is my first Mac computer.
I want to convert a MP4 video file to AVI or MOV file type. How would I do this on my new Mac? Documentation says I have Quicktime X, but I cannot find Quicktime X on my system. When I try to load Quicktime 7 Pro, my system says I have Quicktime X and cannot load Pro. Apple websites say Pro version will allow me to convert the MP4 files. Anyone have any experience or ideas on what I should do? How do I find Quicktime X? Will it do the conversion for me? Thanks

Use MPEG Streamclip, or open the QuickTime Player from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, installing this software if needed.

  • Best way to play movies from MacBook Pro to HDTV

I have some hi-res 1080p movies on my MacBook Pro which currently runs Lion 10.7.4.  Planning on upgrading to Mountain Lion but my hardware will not support Airplay Mirorring (it's a mid 2009).  I will soon be buying an iPad 3rd generation also which of course does do Airplay to an HDTV.  Somehow can I get the material off the MacBook Pro directly to the HDTV though maybe the new iPad or even an Apple TV?  I will be running the audio through an external stereo receiver/speakers, so just concerned with the video.  Also had read that my model of MacBook Pro only supports video from the minidisplay port to HDMI.
Best solutions?  I may get an Apple Tv if necessary or anything within reasonable cost including any programs for the Mac or iPad.
Oh NOTE:  My movies are just avi or mkv files and NOT in iTunes.

I believe you can do Back up to Disc and burn them as Data Discs. (Be sure to check your burning preferences first.) You won't be able to view them from the burned discs, but you can use them to restore to your library. Burning the movie itself....I doubt you can get it to fit on one CD. Another option would be to invest in an external drive. I hear they're pretty affordable.

after a recent iTunes upgrade the sound will not work when I watch a movie or anything else in iTunes on my Thunderbold Display. I have the 15'' retina MacBook Pro connected to the display and it used to work flawlesly. has anyone had the same problem?

When I upgraded the volume control in iTunes (at the top) defaulted to off (all the way left) so no sound.  I just slid the slider all the way to the right.  Also be sure display audio is set in the preferences, sound menu
