Considering purchasing Macbook Air.

Hi there.
I am considering purchasing a MacBook Air. I just wanted to get your take on it as I have been hearing some horror stories about it and I am a little concerned.
I have heard there are battery issues, overheating, fan troubles. I have also heard the Air has trouble displaying streaming media(Youtube).
However, I have also heard MBA users who love the portability of the Air and some say their machines run fine.
So I am kinda sitting on the fence here. Should I go for the convenient MBA(portability, etc) or go the safer route and go for the MacBook Pro. I have had a MBP before and was kinda hoping for a change with the MBA. However with everything I have been hearing I am unsure what to do.
Can some of you give me your advice on this?
BTW, I was intending on buying the 2nd gen MBA with SSD in hopes this would boost speed etc.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.
...Bruce

I'm also on the fence. I have a plain old 13" MacBook that I bought just before the announcement of the MacBook Air, so I kicked myself for a few weeks, thinking I'd missed a golden opportunity... but then the complaints started pouring in over the internet. I'm assuming all the bugs have been worked out by now. Most of the problems seem to be with earlier models, but I've seen no input from newer owners.
Basically, I use my MacBook for writing. I use screenwriting software, Safari for research, and Pages for some other word processing needs, and that's pretty much it. Oh, and iTunes while I'm writing, but I play my music from another source if one's available. Once in a while, I might YouTube something. Unlike people who maintain only one computer, I have an iMac for everything else (movies, music, Photoshop, games, etc.) because I like to keep my work separate. That said, I find the MacBook cumbersome; I never use the superdrive, the firewire, or more than one USB port at a time; my entire set-up is wireless. So it SEEMS like it's right up my alley, but I often run my screenwriting software simultaneously with Pages and Safari (and usually Adium/MSN) for upwards of 12 hours straight (sometimes I work like a fiend). I need all of these programs to run together in order to work. So, is this going to work for me? I find that my MacBook really slows down when I'm running all of these at once, but it doesn't usually start until I've been working for a very long time.
I should probably mention that I intend to buy the stronger 2.13GHz version with the 128GB solid-state drive or whatever the most powerful/most expensive model comes out with the next revision this spring (if there is one).

How do I backup ALL of my iPad content onto a newly purchased MacBook Air? I can't backup up apps or music from CDs through the device backup function.

First you need to authorize your MBA with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
With your iPad connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPad. This will transfer/copy all iTunes content on your iPad that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
Photos on your iPad that were transferred from your old computer need to be transferred from your old computer to your MBA.
Before syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal if you aren't syncing this content over the air with an iCloud account, enter one contact in the Address Book and one calendar event in iCal on your MBA. Make these up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provided a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can be imported by your MBA with iPhoto or the Image Capture application.

In my newly purchased MacBook Air, Dropbox does not function properly (it shows MS Word, Excell and Power Point docs but not pictures). It asks for Mac OS Password for my computer which I do not have. How should I get this password ?

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • Have just purchased Macbook Air is there an equivalent program to Excel

Have just purchased Macbook Air , is there an equivalent program to excel available already on the Macbook or do I need to download a program.

    My two cents:
Numbers 3.0, which is either preloaded onto the Air or a quick free download from the Mac App Store, is a very powerful application that opens many (probably most) Excel spreadsheets brilliantly. (My work involves using Excel daily both on a PC and the Mac and I was surprised by that.)
For most things Numbers 3.0 is, in my opinion, a far more agreeable environment to work in than OpenOffice, which I've tried recently. (I haven't tried NeoOffice or LibreOffice). OpenOffice definitely has more features, though.
Numbers 3.0 is not a print-oriented application, so if you need to print out lots of documents you may find it lacking. It's more oriented toward collaboration via iCloud sharing and to syncing to iOS devices than it is to printing. It's also good at charting. Numbers is now very powerful on the iPad, convenient for showing work to others in an interactive way, and doing work while you're on the go that syncs back automatically to the Mac. The syncing, a problem with the old version, now works very well.
In the calculation department Numbers 3.0 lacks the equivalent of Excel's array functions and some advanced statistical functions. It also doesn't have the equivalent of VBA; no scripting. It doesn't have pivot tables, but there are good workarounds. It's got tons of functions, more than the old Numbers version, far more than most people actually use.
If you need 100% compatibility with Excel in order to work with others who have complicated formatting or printing needs or are doing sophisticated statistical analysis or working on huge long spreadsheets, then the only application that qualifies for that is Excel. It's a real workhorse on the Mac, an excellent program.

  • I recently purchase macbook air with OS 10.10.2. I want to use my Seagate external backup plus hard drive for time machine back up. How to partition my 1TB Seagate back up plus hard drive for use with mac and windows pc?

    Hi All,
I recently purchased 13" Macbook Air with OS 10.10.2. I want to use my 1TB Seagate backup plus external hard drive as time machine and my windows 7 pc. Please suggest a method. Thanks in advance for your reply.

I strongly recommend having an external drive dedicated solely for TimeMachine. You could partition the drive but if something goes wrong you risk losing the data on both partitions. Should you decide to go ahead with splitting the drive for two different uses you’ll need to partition the drive either using the Mac’s built in Disk Utility program or Windows utility. I believe the built in Windows disk utility program will destroy the current partition and erase the data that’s on it - I use a third party Windows disk utility program for partitioning and it allows for non-destructive partitioning but warns to back up data first just in case. Apple’s Disk Utility can do non-destructive partitions but I don’t recall every trying to do a non-destructive partition on a disk originally formatted for Windows using it. Again - back up that data just in case.
Finally, your TimeMachine drive should be at least 1.5 times (I prefer 2 times) the size of the data you expect to be backing up a year or two from now.  In other words, if you currently are using 50GB of your computer’s drive but expect to begin purchasing Mac software to replace software on your Windows computer and if you expect to be putting photos, music, and other data on it you might expect that two years from now you’ll have 100GB of stuff on the drive. So a 200GB partition is the smallest size you’d want.  TM’s backup scheme keeps multiple copies of data as it changes so the extra room is important for this scheme.

  • Error shown after purchasing Macbook Air

An error was shown after I have made an oder of Macbook Air in the Apple (HK) Online Store. I have entered the "Order Processing" page after the purchase. However, I didn't receive any email and I can't access to "Check My Order" afterwards.
    Thanks for helping! Cheers!

This is a user to user forum and I'm afraid no-one on here can help you. You may just have hit a server glitch which will sort itself out eventually, but otherwise you can only get help by contacting the Store - try the number given at bottom left of this page.

  • Upgrading Recently Purchased Macbook Air?

I just bought a macbook air about a month and a half ago. Since then, there have been announced updates to the air lineup including a 720p camera, an ivy bridge chipset and usb 3.0 ports. It seems unfair that I would be getting all of these extras for the same price as the "old" air, so can I return my air for an updated version?

You're outside the 14 days 'no questions asked' return period, sorry.  I guess you could ask them but at some stage they have to cut off the transition.
If you feel you must absolutely have the latest model you could sell your old one. I'm sure somebody would be happy to get a relatively new model Mac at a reasonable used price.
