Considering Stopping SMS_Exec service before backup. Thoughts?

I'm considering a scheduled task to stop the SMS_exec service before the backup runs and restarting after backup is completes.
This will keep the logs clean from tasks that fail when the database is unavailable.
Does anyone currently do something similar?
Thoughts?

Keeping the logs clean has no actual value.
What are you doing to perform your backups?

  • Stop Services Before Patching

    Hello,
    I had a question come up yesterday regarding a few servers in my environment related to patch deployments from SCCM 2012. Is it possible to deploy a Software Update Group that will stop certain services before patches are applied - then, after the reboot,
    start those services up in a specific order?
    There are at lease two seperate high-profile production applications where I have to suppress the reboots and schedule reboot times for those systems so the system owners can start the services in a specific order. It would be a real time saver to automate
    this type of situation.
    TIA

    For scenarios like this where you need to control multiple steps, many organizations use Orchestrator to automate the process.  I prefer this approach because it allows the most flexibility for handling success/failure scenarios.
    You can also try to use a Task Sequence for this.
    I hope that helps,

  • Dfs R Service Stopping before backup on Domain Controllers

    HI,
    I have a weird issue where the DFS replication service is stopping when a DC backup starts.
    Setup: Forest with 5 child domains. Only one of the domains is having a problem. this domain has DCs in the US and UK. all four DCs experience the same issue. All DC’s are Server 2008 r2. DFS
    R is used for AD replication.
    Issue: DFS replication service stops when a backup starts.
    The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner P1USDC01 for replication group Domain System Volume due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.
    Additional Information:
    Error: 9036 (Paused for backup or restore)
    About 30 minutes later when the backup completed, DFS replication resumes.
    As mentioned this happens to all 4 domain controllers in the domains, but no other domains are affected. AD replication stops during this time.
    Every time this happens the AD DB is rebuilt.
    lsass (548) A database location change was detected from 'D:\Active Directory\Windows\NTDS\DB\ntds.dit' to '\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy168\Active Directory\Windows\NTDS\DB\ntds.dit'.
    I thinks this is more due to the VSS provider than an issue with the DB.
    Some ‘Googling/Binging’ shows that that error can be ignored as it resumes after. But im not so sure. Why are my other domains not effected. They use the same backup procedure,
    same hardware, same OS, same patch revision (always 3 months behind current release).
    Any suggestions would be great!

    You can ignore it as long as it restarts. You can also create a scheduled task that will check the service and start it if it is not running.
    I would recommend starting by installing latest Windows Updates (Especially those ones: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968429) and make sure that your backup solution is up-to-date too.
    If none helped then I would recommend contacting your backup solution developers technical support for assistance.

  • Systemd service to run command before stopping connman.service?

    [This is my first time creating a thread, I apoligize if there is a more suitable category]
    Hello,
    I would like to run a command at shutdown before stopping a specific service (connman). I need the command to finish before stopping connman as well.
    Is there a good way to do this? I tried searching, but it seems systemd is a bit finnicky when it comes to shutdowns.
    I'd like to achieve this without modifying connman.service (Though this would probably work for me)
    What is the best way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    Hi
    I'm not sure if it would work, but from logic, creating a service file for your command with an "After=" dependency to connman might do it. Assuming that systemd passes the dependencies in reverse order when shutting down...
    Plus use "ExecStop=" to make your command execute at stopping.
    You gotta try this out.
    Regards
    Edit: To test/debug you can probably simply stop connman and see if it pulls the dep (instead of shutting down completely).
    Edit2: Maybe better better use "ExecStop=" inside the connman service files. As you mentioned you copy the original service file from /usr/lib/systemd/system to /etc/systemd/system and make your modifications there. This is the correct way to modify service files.
    Or then do it with a "config" directory, analog to how it's done here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/au … al_console
    Reference 'man systemd.service':
    ExecStop=
    Commands to execute to stop the service started via ExecStart=. This argument takes
    multiple command lines, following the same scheme as described for ExecStart= above. Use of
    this setting is optional. After the commands configured in this option are run, all
    processes remaining for a service are terminated according to the KillMode= setting (see
    systemd.kill(5)). If this option is not specified, the process is terminated immediately
    when service stop is requested. Specifier and environment variable substitution is
    supported (including $MAINPID, see above).
    Evtl. make sure your links in the .wants directory reference to the correct service file. (Disable and reenable once.)

  • Stop weblogic services using StartStopServices.xml parameter leaves cmd.exe

    When using the "Start > All Programs > Oracle Business Intelligence > Stop BI services" function it calls the StartStopServices.cmd file. This file then references the StartStopServices.xml file using the following statement;
    <target name="stop_all" depends="set.is.stop.all, opmn.stop, wls.mgd.stop, wls.wait.mgd.shutdown, del.generated.managed.server.credentials, wls.stop, wls.wait.admin.shutdown, del.generated.admin.server.credentials">
         </target>
         <target name="set.is.stop.all">
         <property name="is.stop.all" value="true"/>
         </target
    The problem that I'm having is that when the weblogic services are successfully stopped, 2 cmd.exe windows are left open on the server. I've created a batch file to call the StartStopServices.cmd and added parameters such as
    Sleep.exe 30
    c:\windows\system32\TASKKILL.exe /F /IM cmd.exe /T
    Theoretically this should pause for a few, and then close the open cmd windows. However whenever the StartStopServices.cmd is called it closes the original command window before any statements are executed. So essentially I don't get to the taskkill or sleep parameters. I'm assuming that I need to edit the XML file somewhere to make it so it doesn't stop_all and close, but simply stops all and allows my added entries in the cmd windows to execute so ALL cmd windows are closed.
    I'm scheduling a backup using RMAN in NOARCHIVELOG mode, and need to stop the weblogic processes in order to complete this backup function. However I need to end these cmd windows otherwise over the course of time they will be cascaded everywhere. Has anybody accomplished this?

    Hope still you need a solution for your question.
    Follow these steps to achive as expected file using StartStopServices.xml, do let me know for any questions.
    File loc: MW_HOME\instances\instance3\bifoundation\OracleBIApplication\coreapplication
    1) I've added a new target attribute( as 'veera' to existing code) at the end of the tag
    <target name="stop_all" depends="determine.language, set.is.stop.all,find.or.get.credentials, opmn.stop, wls.mgd.stop, wls.wait.mgd.shutdown, del.generated.managed.server.credentials, wls.stop, wls.wait.admin.shutdown, del.generated.admin.server.credentials, veera">
    </target>
    2) Added new code as show below
    <target name="veera" if="wls.domain.exists" depends="wls.check.exists" description="Stop WLS">
    <echo message="Srini..." />
    <exec spawn="true" executable="cmd.exe" osfamily="windows" dir="${DOMAIN_HOME}/bin">
    <arg value="/c" />
    <arg value="taskkill /f /IM cmd.exe" />
    </exec>
    </target>
    If it is helpful, please mark as correct or helpful

  • Stopping iCloud service erased iCal data on my Mac

    I was setting up iCal and decided to postpone the first sync to later. When I wanted to "Disconnect", I got the message that all data would be deleted from the Mac... of course the data would still be available for other iCloud connected devices.
    Problem is that my Mac is the ONLY device sychronized to the cloud so far. It deleted my iCal files completely. I was lucky to uncheck the address book before iCloud could get to it. Thanks to Timemachine, I'm back to normal.
    Is this normal that if I one day want to stop using the cloud service, it will delete everything from my Mac?
    I can't believe this would be designed that way.

    This is the kind of **** that used to set Apple apart from the others; things that made sense and a sense of care.
    Well Apple you've blown it; thousands of people (perhaps even millions?) have lost their data because they have decided to stop using iCloud. I thought iCloud looked cool, but now I see that there is a VERY big catch.
    Please, put an option there to copy data back to the computer; if you can copy all the data onto iCloud, then ethically you should have the ability to copy all the data back onto the computer. Please, have a sense of ethics and give users this option!!!
    This option was never removed.

    iTunes places the iPhone backup in the following location. Navigate there & delete everything in the backup folder, but not the folder itself. You will have to turn on "Show All Hidden Files & Folders" to see it:
    Mac:~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

  • Installing Patch 9.2.0.5: Weird "Stop Running Services" Screen

    Hi to all.
    I found this issue in several places, including this forum, but I never saw a working proposal for a satisfying solution. Installing Oracle Patch 9.2.0.5 over a 9.2.0.1-Installation on XP Pro, I was confronted with a "Stop Running Services" screen, that listed ALL running Windows Services, even the most basic ones, which are required for a working OS and cannot/should not be stopped. Of course I had stopped the Oracle listener and instance services (including the recovery service, omtsreco.exe).
    I found using TASKLIST.EXE or LISTDLLS.EXE, that many Oracle DLLs like ORAPLS9.DLL were used by a command "svchost -k netsvcs". But I could not find out, where and for what reason this command is launched and how I can prevent this launching without hazarding the system. The string "netsvcs" can not be found in the registry, for instance.
    At least, somehow I managed to do the job, but I cannot exactly recall all the steps I took! At the "Stop Running Services" screen I chose "Abort current component and continue installation", and after install finished (it said something like "install finished with errors" or that like), I was left with a non-functioning Oracle client. Whopee! It told me "Bad function entry point" when I tried to start SQL*Plus. Desperately, I started the patch installation a second time. THIS time I installed OUI 10.1.0.2 as a first step (which I did NOT during the first round), and then started patch install. Strangely, this time I was presented another flow of dialogs (Sorry, but I missed to make notes about the exact titles and the dialog flow), which took MUCH MUCH longer ("Analyzing Dependencies" for example, took 1.5 hours to complete), and I really do not know, how or whether I was confronted with a "Stop Running Services" issue), but after all I really managed to complete the second try successfully, and the client functions worked again (SQL*Plus reported the correct version, 9.2.0.5).
    Before I'm driven through this hell again (I have to patch several workstations running 9.2.0.1), I'd like to know,
    - Whether the issue has been solved, that the "Stop Running Services Screen" lists
    most basic services like "Event Manager". Could it have been caused by using the
    wrong OUI version or under what circumstances will it appear?
    - Secondly, what is this mysterious "svchost -k netsvcs" (netsvcs = NETSerViCeS ?)
    locking many of the DLL files in the Oracle "BIN" folder. It is definitely NOT
    one of the Oracle listener or instance services (all of which start with "Oracle").
    How can this service be disabled or be prevented from loading the Oracle DLLs?
    Sorry for the long story and partially unclear details, since I do not recall all of the long installation session. Any input is welcome.
    Werner

    Ok, "netsvcs" CAN be found in the registry, but I used FINDSTR.EXE to seach a UNICODE .REG file, and of course had no hits. Meanwhile, I learned more about SVCHOST.EXE and it's service groups, one of which is "netsvcs". In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost, I found a value and a key named "netsvcs", the value contains this string (abbreviated):
    "6to4
    AppMgmt
    AudioSrv
    Browser
    CryptSvc
    helpsvc
    xmlprov
    wscsvc
    WmdmPmSN".
    These are the symbolic names of the services presented to me in the "Stop Running Services" screen! Now it's clear, why this screen appears, since "svchost -k netsvcs" is the process locking the Oracle DLLs.
    But the question remains: WHY does "svchost -k netsvcs" need access to Oracle DLLs? Which system or application setting controls whether svchosts tries to load the DLLs?
    Still puzzled. Werner.

  • Stopping NT Service Server

    Hello All,
    My question concerns stopping a managed server once it has been installed and
    started as an NT Service. What we want to do is to shutdown our server at night
    in order to do database backups. Once we have our managed server running as a
    managed service we can issue a stop service command. It looks like that shuts
    down the server, but it looks like it does it very abruptly. Is this an OK method
    for shutting down a managed server? The reason we're doing this is so that we
    can have the command issued automatically by our database server. Is there some
    other automated method which we can use for shutting down the server? What are
    other people doing for a problem like this where backups are done at night?
    Thanks In Advance,
    Rich

    The WebLogic docs describe how to shut down a server from the command line:
    http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs61/adminguide/startstop.html#1028914
    This is perhaps more gentle than stopping the service.

  • 9205 Installation Issue - Stop running services

    Hi,
    I am trying to install Patch 9.2.0.5 on Windows XP Service Pack 2.
    Before the installation begins I am prompted to stop a long list of services. I try to stop all services but obviously cannot stop them all. I can thus not continue my installation. Has anyone encountered this before or have a solution for it as I cannot proceed with my installation as is.
    Kindest Regards,
    Will

    Actually I have the same problem and I'm currently seeking a solution.
    The problem is that OUI lists all the windows services to be stopped (It's insane to ask such thing!!!)
    Normally for patching only the client you should stop only the MTS recovery service!!
    Anyone knows how to handle this? (Apart from uninstall/reinstall Oracle Client)

  • Is it possible to not pay ATT if I stopped using service after buying iPhon

    I would like to buy iPhone 3Gs and I don't mind subscribing to ATT, but my concern is:
    What if I didn't like iPhone & neither ATT service after buying it, *is it possible just to stop using both of them (iPhone & ATT) or I'll have to pay for 2 years no matter what happens?*
    Its logical that if I didn't pay after 4-5 months, they can stop the service & iPhone will get locked again and that's all, isn't it?
    Regards,
    Alan

    You can return an iPhone for payment credit within 30 days after the purchase date - less a 10% restocking fee, and cancel the contract with AT&T within the same time frame with no early contract termination fee charged by AT&T. If you cancel the contract after the initial 30 days, you will be charged an early contract termination fee by AT&T and you keep the iPhone. The iPhone will remain carrier locked with AT&T, and unless the iPhone remains activated with AT&T, you have no warranty coverage. The iPhone includes a one year warranty.
    If you don't pay after 4-5 months and you ignore being contacted by AT&T about your past due balance, your service will be cancelled, AT&T would eventually turn this over to a collection agency, this would be reported to credit bureaus affecting your credit history. Go to get service with another carrier with a subsidized phone, and you will likely be forced to pay a deposit before being granted credit again with a post-paid account.
    The iPhone is sold in the U.S. as carrier locked with AT&T only, and remains carrier locked with AT&T regardless if the iPhone remains activated with AT&T or not.

  • You must stop your application before the engine can stop

    I have a built application that uses LV DSC 6.0.2. The application programmatically starts and stops the tag engine. The application works fine, but on some machines, I will continually get the following dialog when I try to shutdown the Tag Engine:
    "You must stop your application before the engine can stop"
    This is strange, because it only occurs on some machines (it appears as though it might occur on machines that ONLY have DSC Run-Time installed, not the full LV DSC dev. system).
    The dialog seems to be referring to the "control" application that is trying to shutdown the engine... it is not telling me that my device servers need to be shut down.
    This dialog seems illogical, I should be able
    to build an application that can start and stop the engine... and why do I get this dialog on some machines but not on others?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    John Paul,
    There are two points we should consider:
    1st: You might have different while loops in your application where you read/write from/to the tag engine with the Read/Write Tag.vi. Those VIs has an output shutdown which should be wired to abord the while loop. If you have some cases where you do not wire this output to your while loop stop you might access the engine while you want to shutdown the engine within another loop with the Engine Shutdown.vi. -> Make sure you have all DSC Engine accessing while loops ended before you shutdown the engine.
    2nd: I guess there was once a race condition problem with the DSC engine and how it accessed the shared memory with the Read/Write Tag.vi. But this race condtion should be fixed with the LabVIEW DSC version
    6.1 or with the additional fixes for LabVIEW DSC 6.0.2. You could download the fixes (in this case especially the BVRTDatabase.dll) from NI's Driver&Update page : www.ni.com/support/ > Option 3, Driver and Updates > Search Drivers and Updates > type "LabVIEW DSC" > pick LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control 6.0.2 Fixes.
    You need to apply this fixes as well on your DSC 6.0.2 Run Time System!
    I hope one of the two suggestions help to solve your issue.
