Considering Story but have questions

Aloha,
I am a CS5.5 Production Suite User.
I have started writing a screen play  (on paper).
I have a lot of questions:
I don't need to have collaboraive functionality - do I need the plus version.
Is there a version that will work on my laptop?
Do I need to always have internet connection?
Does the program always exist in the cloud?
Does my screenplay always exist in the cloud?
How secure is this cloud thing?  CAn other hack into it and take my work?
Do I have to buy the $25/month version or will the free version do it for me? What won't I be able to do?
Will having CS5.5 opt me out of using Story (do I need CS6)
I could always opt for Final Draft or Movie Magic - but I understand that Story integrates in some way with Adobe Premeire.
THen again if I'm forced to buy the $25/month version - it doesn't save me anything from buying Final Draft or Movie Magic.
Do I need to call an Adobe Sales Rep?

Hi Aloha:
I'll try to answer your questions individually.
1.  Collaboration features are only available to Plus users. So you don't need Plus version for collaboration angle, but some of your other requirements would need Plus.
2.  If you need Story application installed as desktop application on your laptop, you need to have plus account. Free users can access the application on story.adobe.com only.
3.  For free account – yes, you need internet connection to work on Story. Story Plus uses can work offline using Desktop app.
4.  Yes free app on story.adobe.com.
5.  Free account – yes, screen plays are always stored on the cloud only. For plus users they could be on the desktop as well till they are not synced to cloud.
6.  You scripts on the cloud are only accessible to persons you share your scripts with. No one else has access to scripts on the cloud.
7.  You can have a look at Story Free and Story Plus comparison chart at http://www.adobe.com/products/story-plus/buying-guide-family-comparison.html
8.  Story is part of CS6 Creative Cloud offering. So if you've got CS6 as part of Creative Cloud subscription, you get to Story Plus as part of it. Else Story Plus need to be purchased separately.
Hope these help you to make you decision to go for Adobe Story Plus or not.
Thanks
Amit

  • Considering Lightroom, but have some questions

Interested in taking my photography to a new level...currently have a Mac and two Cannon DSLRs. In the past I have used I photo for 'developing' however it is limiting. I have used Photoshop and even taken a class in it at a JC however I find that it is not intuitive for me and am looking for something different....Loved Illustrator when I used it many years ago doing graphic design work so not totally discouraged by Adobe products. Hear someone talking about Lightroom recently and wanted to find out a little more about it...my questions are as follows:
What are people's impressions of Lightroom? More intuitive than Photo shop?
    More functionality than iPhoto?
Does Lightroom work well on the Mac? I have never used any adobe products on the mac, assuming they are similar, but have to ask the question.
Can you buy the software without using the cloud and paying monthly fees?
    Thanks!

Most people love it, once they learn how it works. All editing is non-destructive and adjustments are saved to a database (catalog). You don’t save files as you do in Photoshop or iPhoto. The settings are saved automatically and applied on export.
Lightroom is more like Aperture than iPhoto. But Apple has dropped support for both apps so it’s a good time to consider Lightroom. LR6 is expected very shortly and you can take a 30 day free trial.
Yes works well on Mac OSX
Lightroom is available for outright purchase if you prefer not to subscribe to the Photography Plan ( LR+ Photoshop $9.99pm without any upfront capital outlay) however LR Mobile functionality and synchronization with iPad/iPhone is only available with a subscription.

  • Considering switching to Apple Pro from Windows PC, but have questions.

Repost from the MacbookPro forums (erroneously posted it there first).
    Hi all,
I'm currently a Vista PC user who has a long time history in PC usage. I'm an old timer who even used the very first PCs, among which were Tandy TRS80, Commodore, Synclair, PCM, etc. I'm very familiar with lots of different OSs due to my IT background (was a system's admin and a programmer for quite some years), so I know my way around in different systems (IBM, HP-Unix, Linux, etc.).
Needless to say, I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty when needed and am one of those computer users who likes to do things himself, just because I rarely trust the tech guy from the store, who I usually end up explaining how systems work instead of the other way around.
Now I know nothing about Macs. Only dealt with them in one company where I didn't have to work with them at all. So I'm completely new to this matter.
I'm considering a Mac mainly because I'm tired of the whole Windows scene and because Linux is not mature enough yet and lacks Windows compatibility. So a Mac would be a logical next step. Plus I refuse to pay another $500 for an operating system that never left its beta stage. Anyway....
Here are the things that I am wondering about but haven't been able to find clear information about:
    1) If I were to buy a Mac Pro, can I upgrade/change it to my hearts content? Or am I limited to Mac hardware only? Let's say I want to upgrade the processor and maybe I want to put a different (read better) cooling fan and body in there, can I do that?
    2) Is PC hardware compatible with the Mac? With that I don't just mean printers and monitors, but also HDDs, video cards, sound cards, etc.
    3) For those of you who made the switch recently, is it an improvement in your experience over Vista/XP? And why?
    4) How well does Windows software run on a Mac? Can I just run any type of Windows software on the Mac if I want to?
    5) I'm a big MMO fan, so play one at any given time as a hobby. Do these kind of games run well in a Windows emulated environment on a Mac (provided a Mac version doesn't exist)?
    6) I'm reading in the forums that new models might be announced soon. Is there any place where I can find information on that?
That is about what I had in mind after having browsed a bit and read the forums here.
Thanks in advance for any replies. I have to admit that the costs of a Mac system are what are holding me back still. But my current system is going to need replacement in the next 6 months or so, and building a new one from scratch is probably going to cost me almost as much as a brand new medium range Mac Pro. Hence the reason I'm considering making the switch.
I'm looking forward to your ideas and experiences.
    Marc

    1) If I were to buy a Mac Pro, can I upgrade/change it to my hearts content? Or am I limited to Mac hardware only? Let's say I want to upgrade the processor and maybe I want to put a different (read better) cooling fan and body in there, can I do that?
You are able to change RAM, HDDs and PCI Hardware (must be Apple Versions most the time (eg. graphics) afaik). Everything else will propably void your warrenty (don't know about optical devices...
But you will propably not not want to change the fans oder body as the Mac Pro is extremly well engineered. You will notice that after changing the harddrives and compare that to a standard PC procedure.
    2) Is PC hardware compatible with the Mac? With that I don't just mean printers and monitors, but also HDDs, video cards, sound cards, etc.
As stated above, all the internal stuff will not be so easy (as Video cards, sound cards ...) (except RAM and HDDs). External Hardware like Printers, Monitors, etc. will propably work ootb without even thinking about installing drivers. Some though need some (e.g. Logitech mice) for full functionality.
    3) For those of you who made the switch recently, is it an improvement in your experience over Vista/XP? And why?
I switched about a year ago to a Mac Pro having quite a similar background (IT) as you. And I didn't regret it. The OS is just like it should be and in 99% of times the slogan "it just works" really is true. (My "wow" moment was syncing my mobile with iSync and Bluetooth wich took me (alone for the bluetooth installation) about 2 days in Windows))
I think Mac OS is - especially if you have an IT background - the better choice over Windows because of its rock solid unix foundation and well-thought-through-ness . At first it was a little bit as if I was in a cage as I didn't know how to do some things but knew how I would do it on Windows but after a (very litte) while I just relaxed and everything now works for me. It sometimes even a bit boring as things just work out as they should and you don't spend hours of setting up the system.
    4) How well does Windows software run on a Mac? Can I just run any type of Windows software on the Mac if I want to?
In Boot Camp yes. It makes your Mac an ordinary Windows PC. There is also virtualization software that make you able to run windows and mac apps side by side but there will be much slower performance and no usage of all 8 cores the mac pro has and 3d wont run well too. But nice if you lets say have one piece of software that has no mac equivalent and you just want do use it quickly without rebooting (wich is needed for Boot Camp).
    5) I'm a big MMO fan, so play one at any given time as a hobby. Do these kind of games run well in a Windows emulated environment on a Mac (provided a Mac version doesn't exist)?
Emulated they wont work well I guess but in Boot Camp no problem. I myself played Wow for quite some time (in mac os with great performance) and now play Warhammer in Boot Camp with all settings maxed out 1920x1200 even on 2 gb of ram no problem at all.
    6) I'm reading in the forums that new models might be announced soon. Is there any place where I can find information on that?
No. If Apple didn't announce them its all rumors. Macrumors.com though has a "buyers guide" where you can see how long the hardware has been without updates which is a good indicator for updates.

  • Want to purchase iweb but have questions. :)

I am considering purchasing iweb and I have a few questions
    1) I saw all of the webpages and they had no sound? is this typical?
    2) how many websites can you have with the .mac account? and do we need iweb to make a website?
    3) I wanted to make a website so that as soon as it loads a video (with sound ) will play without pressing a play button.
    4) can i use final cut pro to produce a video for this webpage?
    5) do i need .mac to run this web page? or do you all use other applications? please list other apps if any.
    and last question..............(drum roll)
    6) do I need to upgrade from my OS 10.3.9?
thank you all so much in advance for your kindness...

My answers pertain to using iWeb "as is" - which means not manually messing with the underlying html that it produces. Also, I don't have .mac, I use bluehost. so I will defer to any .mac users.
    1. You can drag audio files on but they show up with controls and need to be started manually.
    2. You can probably make lots of sites. .mac isn't very generous with disk space - that will most likely be your barrier.
    3. You will have to alter the html to make this happen. By default you have to press play.
    4. yes
    5. no, but certain features such as a hit counter are dependent on .mac. also, uploading only the changes to the site depends on .mac. I use a terminal session and rsync.
    6. no
iWeb is like the other i apps. it hides a lot from you. every time you publish to a folder ALL your sites will be published. this will only bother you if you don't use .mac - most likely. all your sites are kept in a single archive type file. It's made for people who know nothing about making a web page.
There is little flexibility. The sites follow templates based on CSS. IF you don't change the css your sites will be prevented from doing simple things like changing the color of web links.

  • New to Visual Studio 2008, not new to CR - but have  question

    Hi,
I started a position to build reports for a small company.  They use VS 2008 and Crystal 2008 (basic).  I am not new to Crystal Reports, been using it since version 4.0.  But I am new to integrating it into Visual Studio or using it to deploy reports via a web application.
I was able to create a dataset, connect Crystal to the Dataset in Visual Studio and design a report.
There are two tabs on the bottom of the Crystal Window - one is to the design side and one is to preview the main page of the report.
So here in lies the problem - when I go to view the results - there are none.  It is random or dummy data being presented in Visual Studio 2008.
I have scoured MSDN and SAP forums looking for help in this.  I see other posts that elude to the same issue, but --there has to be some way to see the data in Visual Studio.
Can someone explain to me why I don't see the real data from the dataset?   And more importantly where is the tutorials for Visual Studio 2008 and Crystal Reports 2008?
Thanks so much for your help!

    Hi,
I have also seen the same, that is report displays dummy data at my end however when you run the report from application you get the data that is when you pass the dataset to the report at runtime and not while previewing the report. I believe this is because when we use datasets to design a report we consider the schema of the report mainly not data.
If you mean that you do not get any data in the report then I would suggest you to use the below mentioned code to generate an xsd file, after filling up the dataset so that the report schema and the dataset schema matches.
    datasetObject.WriteXml("c:\\temp\\myData1.xml",XmlWriteMode.WriteSchema);

  • Love my iMac but have questions

I bought my 20" iMac in November. Love it. I have had few problems with it and when I do it's usually my fault and my 16 year old fixes it for me. But I do have a few questions regarding some pretty basic things that I need assistance with. I know someone out there can help me.
    1. I don't know how to change my log in name. Right now it's my husband's name - Robert - and I want to change it to my name - Wendy - so when I post questions in this forum, for example, my name appears not his. Not sure why his is there anyway ... perhaps because we used his credit card to purchase an iPhoto book?
    2. When I transfered all my data from my 12" Powerbook to my new iMac, it transferred all the information seamlessly. However, it also saved all the wireless network connections that I use for my laptop when I'm traveling. I use the wireless network here at home for the iMac but I can't get the computer to recognize the network automatically. It seems to recognize one of the other networks that got transferred over from the Powerbook and I'm not sure if or how to delete these networks from the iMac.
    3. I use a Lacie external hard drive to back up all my files from both my Powerbook and iMac. To do this I've just been connecting the external drive to the computer and then drag the files I want saved to the external. Is this okay or is there a better way to do this?
That's it for now. I know these probably seem pretty easy problems to solve but not for me. Thanks in advance to everyone who helps.
    Cheers.

If you are referring to posting here, you need to create an Apple ID for yourself. Log out of Discussions and then click here go to the screen where you can create your own Apple ID. Then just use that ID to log into the Discussions (if it's logging your husband in automatically, clear the cookies in your web browser).

That'll work just fine unless it becomes too cumbersome. There is backup software available from other developers (or you can use Apple's Backup if you're a .Mac member) that can automate the process, including backing up automatically on a schedule.
    Hope this helps somewhat.

  • About to buy Lightroom for first time but have questions re. camera and system compatibility.

    Hello there,
I'm about to take the leap into the world of Lightroom but need advice.
I have an oldish computer, an Imac G5 which has a powerpc processor, NOT an intel processor.
My understanding is that because the computer doesn't have an intel processor, I can only run Lightroom2.
This is potentially a problem, as my camera is a Canon 5d mark ii and from reading online, it seems that Lightroom 2 cannot process RAW files from the 5dmarkii and that I would in fact need Lightroom 2.2?
I don't know if I can install lightroom2.2 on a non-intel processor computer and I really don't want to have to get a new computer just to be able to use lightroom....PLEASE HELP!
    All advice gratefully received.

One other relevant point. With LR 2.7 you will be using the old technology "Process version 2003", which you can now consider dated in respect to competitive raw processing software in the market.
You will also not have the more advanced noise reduction and sharpening technology available in LR 3.x and ACR 6.x in addition to the new technology "Process version 2010".
The numbers reflect the difference (2003 to 2010).

  • Want to move to FCE HD but have questions before I drop the coin . . .

I currently have Adobe Premiere 3.0 on a Windows machine, plus I'm primarily a still photographer, so my video experience is limited. I'd rather do all of my video work on my new iMac, so I'm looking at buying Final Cut Express HD instead of returning to Premiere.
It will be primarily used for producing instructional DVDs and in some places I will want to use some stop motion. As I see it, I have two choices: shoot in DV and edit, or produce a slideshow from stills shot at 2.5 frames per sec. and import that into a video. I'd want to dub in a voice-over narration to either one. The stop motion would have to have irregular timed spacing, so that the key images could be held for a time while the narration explains what is going on. These sequences would then be edited into the larger video as DVD chapters.
Would FInal Cut Express HD be capable of handling either method?
I'm currently an Aperture user -- can FCE HD read Aperture libraries for the incorporation of still images into video?
Can I build a slide show in FCE HD or would other software be preferable and the result exported to FCE HD?
    Thanks

You can use it to make slideshow videos/DVDs but FCE can only work in DV quality so your slides will be a maximum of 768x576 in PAL and less in NTSC.
Compared with viewing them on a computer monitor of 1024x768 or more, some people find the quality a little disappointing.
You can of course do it in HDV where the quality should be very high but most people have not yet got that equipment.
    Ian.

  • MAC address issue...old, but have question

I missed all the news about bios 2.5 but anyway did it screw up the MAC address? I flashed it but it never let me into windows saying I didn't have an acpi compliant bios.
I see some things about it messing up the MAC...
If the mac address isn't all zeros is it ok? Or did the bios just change it altogether to a diiferent value?
Sorry for late post about it...I missed it when bios 2.5 out to do my comp being down at the time.

  • Looking to buy LE but have question

ok here is what im trying to do. i need to make a DATA file in garage band and i need to make it possible for the DATA file to be used on Pro Tools so the song can be mixed and mastered. any tips on how to do this?
If I buy Logig Express will I be able to send the song from GB to LE and make it a data (MIDI file) so that my friend using Pro tools can mix and master?
    Lisa

    In a word: Yes.
However, there are both midi and audio tracks in GB (and in LE). They both contain DATA. Since Protools doesn't have GB instruments to play the midi files, you would need to make sure you convert any midi files playing GB instruments to audio before exporting for Protools. Depending on a couple of factors, you could do that in GB, or you could do that in LE.
The easiest thing is to make sure all your tracks end up as audio files in LE, then transfering them to Protools will not be difficult. It's not a 30-second operation, but it should take less than 1/2 hour or so, depending on the number of tracks.

Ok at this point I can read a ton of stuff on here about the differences in signal performance in different areas and things like that but. I am Also curius about functionality. I am constantly on my phone and using apps on it at the same time. besides that is there any other maybe quirky but maybe not differences between the 2 ? does anyone have any information that would possibly change my mind to stay on ATT or is it a go. The reason I ask is i get a new discount through Verizon and would like to save the money.

Besides the problems that you cite is your iPhone 5 locked to AT&T?

  • Considering moving to the Creative Cloud but have an important question...

I'm considering moving to the Creative Cloud but have some concerns. if, for example, after spending 1500+ over the next three years on the Creative Cloud and by then, presumably at version CS9 or CS10, will I be able to continue using the CS9 or CS10 products as I would have, had I bought the retail software?
I know if I continue to simply buy upgrades to retail items and stop at CS9 I will be able to use those products forever so I am not seeing the incentive here if that is the case.
Your confirmation is much appreciated so that I can move on to decide on my next steps.
    Cheers,

No. It's an all-or-nothing exit policy at the moment.
When you stop paying your monthly fee, you lose all access to Adobe software (unless you already own a pre-Cloud version which you can fall back on).
Many requests have been made to relax the exit policy and permit users to perhaps pay a residual fee to keep using whichever version is current when they leave the Cloud. But that hasn't yet been offered by Adobe. Personally I don't expect it to ever be offered.
PS how much will you spend on the retail versions over the next three years given that you must upgrade with every new version under Adobe's new upgrade policy introduced with the CS6 cycle? i.e you can no longer skip a version and still qualify for upgrade pricing next version.
Licensing issues aside, in effect, you never really "own" the software if you want to stay current. Both Cloud and retail are now effectively subscription models.
The choice really boils down to upfront $$ vs monthly $$.

The primary incentive is full access to the entire Master Collection for a low monthly fee. Don't have to outlay thousands of dollars upfront.
    You also get:
additional Cloud services (host up to 5 websites etc)
multi-platform licenses (activate on Win/Win, Mac/Mac or Win/Mac for the same monthly fee. Retail items are single platform only)
early access to new software features for Cloud members only. As soon as Adobe finishes writing and testing the code, Cloud members get it. Retail users must wait for CS6.5 or CS7. Depends if living on the bleeding edge of Adobe software interests you. As we all know, change is the only constant these days.

  • Purch. & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..

    Hi ~
_Purchased & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..._
First I made sure I backed up my 5,500 photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive. (The only downfall to this backing-up process is that I haven't found an easy way to back-up the comments attached to each photo. Any advice on this? Part of the "horror" to losing one's photos is also losing the comments added to them over the years.)
Back to the install... I installed iLife 08 and it installed correctly. I checked to see what version of the applications I have in the dock on my desktop - I figured it would just import existing data (photos, tunes, etc.) into the newer version and replace it in the dock - +it only did this for iDVD+, of course it wasn't that easy for the others.
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
I am most concerned with iPhoto and making sure all the photos AND their comments import correctly into the newer iPhoto 08. I am nervous about this so I want to make sure I do the process correctly.
I also want to make sure my iTunes information imports correctly to the newer version as well.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy

If you backed up the iPhoto Library Folder then you got everything - photos, albums, comments etc
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
The Dock is not important. Look in your Applications Folder for iPhoto 08. That's where it should be. The Dock is just a shortcut to that. What version is in your Apps folder?
To upgrade a Library from v2 to iPhoto 08 all you do is open the Library with the newer version.

I just got my cable company to switch my wireless router to a wired one considering now I have the wireless airport device (the newest one) but now I can't get a wireless signal. The router works when directlyplugged in,the aiport wireless device is green. I've tried going through my new MacBook Pro settings and it the diagnostics check, it says network changes detected, I tell it that it "yes" does connect to a cable modem, it tells me to restart it, after I do it asks if there are any other devices hooked up ( firewall) and when I say no it tells me that it can't fix the problem.
Now I know that I probably have a new IP address because of the cable company switching the boxes but it was working fine with the other box, now there isn't a signal to be had on it!
Please anybody out there that can help!!!??

Any time you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle with the new equipment. Check out the following AirPort User Tip. Please post back your results.
