Considering Switching to Mac - Data on File Server - HELP!

Hi-
I'm a Windows-on-the-desktop user with a whole bunch of iOS devices and I am thinking of switching to Mac as of Lion / Lion Server.  I tried the Mac a few years ago and got frustrated pretty quickly because of the inability of multiple users to share data on a server. Can anyone please tell me if now is the time to try again!?
My needs:
iPhoto - Have a Photos share on a server (windows/mac/linux) which contains all of our family photos (raid6) as the source of 3 desktop Mac iPhoto Libraries.  Automatic updating? Faces recgonition turned off? (server grinding at 400GB of photos), syncing libraries among desktop clients?   Can Aperture do this? (last time I tried Aperture, it wanted to rebuild the library every week.... and that took days of grinding my server)
iTunes - Have a Music share on the server as the source of 3 different iTunes libraries.  Automatic updating?  I'm in Canada so iTunes Match will never come here.
iMovie - native editing of AVCHD yet ? (no desire to convert my whole library to massive uncompressed video files)
Video - Play AVIs / WMVs / MKVs full screen via a Mac Mini from a Video share on the server to a HD Television.  Can Quicktime do this?  FrontRow?  Last time I tried I recall a lot of stutter.
Many thanks-
A Mac-Wanna-Be

So I've got a solution to iPhoto:    Use Picasa.   Not ideal, as I would really like to live the iLife, but it'll do for now.  I've found a bunch of iPhoto library syncing utilities, but none of them deal with shared raw data on a network drive - they all expect you to carry all of your photos on your desktop / notebook Macs.

  • Mac as a file server for windows -- mounting a mac disk at windows startup

Is there any way to use the Mac as a file server for a windows XP home service pack 1 system?
The best I can do is "mount disk at login". However, this fails to use the right username/password, and even then it fails to deal with programs that run outside of a user context, or with fast user switching (it seems every program gets a different set of drive letters to remote volume mappings).
    Mac Mini 1.42 1G   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    And this is my problem.
    In windows terms:
I want to assign a drive letter to a network drive, and have that be a machine-wide assignment, that is activated during bootup, and is visible to all users and services.
I can do that for an arbitrary partition that is physically attached to the machine.
I cannot seem to do that for any partition that is mounted over the network.
    The problems are:
    1. It doesn't map for every user,
    2. It doesn't map for services that run when a user isn't logged in
    3. It generates annoying inconsistencies in what programs see what.
Is there really no way for an XP box to use a file server? Even a microsoft file server? (if there is, how do I make my mac os with samba look like a real microsoft file server).
Annoying tidbit: The "conncet at login" information is stored in the user profile; if you rely on that, then the user profile cannot be stored with the rest of the user's personal files. If it weren't for that, I could probably live with a work around.
(2 to 1 someone will say "Xp Professional can do that trivially" and tell me to upgrade. I thought XP home was supposed to support home and small office networking, and I thought that included a single shared file server.)

  • Transfer data from File server to SAP R/3 AS

hi, i need to transfer data from file server (http:/.....) to SAP R/3 application server. I have the HTTP Host name (http:/......) and login details. please let me know how i can resolve this.
    best regards
    Neeraj

    Hi
You need to create a RFC Destination with the details what you have, then you can create a RFC Fucntion module to read the data, according to the destination system, you have to code that, once you
pick the data from the destination system, later you need to convert it to SAP Format.
To trace your fm status, there are function module availabe in sap, search with http, you can find.

  • Considering switching to Mac

Hello everyone, i have been a PC/Windows user all of my life, and am now very seriously considering switching over to mac. However, i have some questions first that i cant seem to find a direct answer to, and apologize in advance for asking things that might seem like a stupid question... so, here goes:
    1. If i were to switch over to the mac version of Microsoft Office, could i swap documents i created in Word with PC's and vice versa(all of the rest of my families computers are PCs as are my schools)without any problems? Would whatever that answer is be the same for any other Office apps like PowerPoint?
    2. Am I correct that Safari is an internet browser?
    3. Does iChat come with the Macs, or is it a seperate program you have to buy?
    4. In iChat, can i still instant message all of my friends who use AIM on a PC and still use my old screen-name if i wanted to? What if i wanted to create a new AIM screen-name? do i just go to AIM.com, make a new one, and use it in iChat without actually downloading the AIM program?
    5. I currently have AOL on my PC but, of course, it *****, and i hear it is even worse on a Mac, so i would just use Safari, but can i still keep my old @aol.com e-mail address and access my e-mail through aol.com? and if i wanted to, could i create a new @aol.com e-mail address using this same method?
    6. Will i still be able to watch all the online videos that run using quicktime/real player/windows media player, on my mac?
    7. Am i right in assuming that i can network my new mac and my old PC in order to move my iTunes library (in AAC format)
from the PC to the Mac? Just for the record, none of the music that i purchased from the iTunes store is "Protected" anymore because i burnt it to a cd and re-imported it, however the videos and tv shows that i bought from them im assuming are still protected, so how could i move THOSE to a my new mac?
Once again, i apologize that I have so many questions that probably seem pretty stupid, but i havent been able to find direct answers to these specific questions
I also want to say thank you in advance for any help anyone can give me, sorry im such a clueless PC user, but, hopefully, with these questions answered, i will be able to happily switch to mac.

    Hello,
switching over to mac. However, i have some
questions first that i cant seem to find a direct
I'll answer them as we go below:
    1. If i were to switch over to the mac version of
Microsoft Office, could i swap documents i created in
Word with PC's and vice versa(all of the rest of my
families computers are PCs as are my schools)without
any problems? Would whatever that answer is be the
same for any other Office apps like PowerPoint?
Yes, all the documents will open and exchange between Microsoft Office for the Mac and Microsoft Office for the PC without trouble.
You can send and exchange them in either direction, and it will work fine.
My wife does just that with her computer. She uses Office for Windows at work and Office for Mac at home.
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents move either direction without any trouble.
There is no Mac version of Access though.
Personally, I use the free NeoOffice program on my system:
    http://www.neooffice.org/
It is also compatible with Microsoft Office. Everything exchanges back and forth in either direction without trouble.
I've exchanged a lot of documents with Office users who have PC's, and they've never had any trouble opening anything I've sent them, and I've never had any problems with anything they've sent me.
NeoOffice can also work with PowerPoint files as well. They've played just fine for me.
It exchanges / works with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.
    2. Am I correct that Safari is an internet browser?
Yes. It is the standard browser on the Mac. I personally prefer it. And, it works with every page I've tried it with. I use it full-time.
But, there are also versions of Opera, FireFox, Netscape, and many others, for the Mac if you want to use something different.
    3. Does iChat come with the Macs, or is it a seperate
    program you have to buy?
It comes standard on all Macs. It's part of OS X.
    4. In iChat, can i still instant message all of my
friends who use AIM on a PC and still use my old
    screen-name if i wanted to?
Yes. You just enter your AIM screen-name when you setup iChat. And, it works as expected from there.
iChat has been designed to work just fine with AIM accounts, and will allow you to talk to other AIM users without any hassle.
    What if i wanted to
create a new AIM screen-name? do i just go to
AIM.com, make a new one, and use it in iChat without
    actually downloading the AIM program?
Yes. Just do it at their website. That's how I did it.
    5. I currently have AOL on my PC but, of course, it
*****, and i hear it is even worse on a Mac, so i
would just use Safari, but can i still keep my old
@aol.com e-mail address and access my e-mail through
aol.com? and if i wanted to, could i create a new
@aol.com e-mail address using this same method?
If you're talking about using Safari to go to the AOL site and use their webmail interface to check your e-mail, then yes that should work just fine.
    6. Will i still be able to watch all the online
videos that run using quicktime/real player/windows
    media player, on my mac?
    Yes.
There are Mac versions of all of those programs. Quicktime comes with all Macs. But, you can download the others.
Windows Media Player has been discontinued, but it still works and can be downloaded from Microsoft's website.
There is also a plug-in to play Windows Media Players in Apple's Quicktime Player.
    7. Am i right in assuming that i can network my new
mac and my old PC in order to move my iTunes library
    (in AAC format)
from the PC to the Mac? Just for the record, none of
the music that i purchased from the iTunes store is
"Protected" anymore because i burnt it to a cd and
re-imported it, however the videos and tv shows that
i bought from them im assuming are still protected,
so how could i move THOSE to a my new mac?
You should be able to find all you need on that here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Those directions explain how to move them using your iPod. But, you could use the same basic method to move them over the network. Just substitute copying through the network for the part that addresses copying them into and from the iPod.
The rest should be about the same.
I also want to say thank you in advance for any help
    anyone can give me,
You're quite welcome. Glad to help

  • AirDisk vs. Mac Mini as File Server

I'm so frustrated with AirDisk (as with any other wired NAS) due to their slowness with large files transfer over my wired network of Macs that I started looking for another solution.
What access/transfer speed difference I can achieve with a dedicated Mac Mini set up exclusively as file server on gigabit wired network?

The right tool for the job. I'm not sure the airport is the best solution. Some things to consider:
How will these files be backed up? This is absolutely the number one question to ask. Number 2 should be, how are we doing off site backups? If this is really for an office and you have files, that if lost, mean your business can be impacted, you need to have off site backups. Even if that is just bringing in an external HD every friday, backing up the server, and keeping the backup at home somewhere safe and secure.
For 100 MB files, you can do that over a network. Not a big deal. For GB files, what is worth more, time or money? Do you have files on the same disk that need simultaneous access by different people?
What machines do you use to do the editing? Can you attach a drobo to one of the machines (helping you with your backup issue as well as providing a nice way to grow your available storage pool), and then use personal file sharing? I don't think you necessarily need a dedicated file server for three people. With the Mac Mini option, if you don't have a keyboard and monitor, I don't think the Mac OS X client software is a great choice for a headless server. I know, I tried to do this. It did not work out very well.
I have two Airport Extreme Ns. I've got a Drobo connected to one and it is not too bad. I have all my DVDs ripped to it and have my laptop synched to my Apple TV. When I watch a movie, iTunes reads the file over the airport extreme and then needs to stream from iTunes to the Apple TV, all wirelessly. It works out well enough. I might have to wait a second or two for the video to start, but its all wireless and that rocks for me.
In your case, you'd likely benefit from wired gigabit ethernet and direct attached storage on one of the machines you use and personal file sharing.
    Just do those backups!

  • Screen Needed for mac mini as file server?

I have two pb I want to network together through a mac mini. Do I need a display for the mac mini to run as a "file server"? I'm new at networking, and I want a place where I can share files with other co-workers w/out using more space on either of our computers. Any help is welcome. Thank you.

The first response you received in this thread was spot on...I just want to add another option to consider.
You can find very inexpensive, network-capable external enclosures on the web (check out dealnews.com). Just toss in a good-sized hard drive (the last 320GB I bought from newegg.com was $115)...hook up one of those enclosures...and boom, you have NAS (Network Attached Storage). No computer to update or support...just simple, effective, and fast network file storage.

  • Considering switching to Mac but.....

    Hi everyone,
I'm sorry to sound such a noob but i have never owned a Mac in my life, but i've got an 2.4 Ghz iMac on loan from work at the moment to try it out and i love it! However i do so have a few questions relating to the switch. I am considering a brand new MB Pro 15 inch with a Bootcamped Windows XP install but am unsure as to the way to go with storage.
You see i currently use several music related apps in Windows such as Acid Pro, Cubase, Wavelab etc so i need access to heaps of wav files and mp3s, but i will need to read and write to them with both Windows and Leopard.
After some research my thoughts here lean towards an external drive that possibly both operating systems can access but, correct me if i'm wrong, for both OS's to be able to read and write to it the drive needs to be formatted in Fat32 yes? I had considered a larger internal drive on the MB but i'm not sure which partition would be best to store the wavs - i know if the windows partition is over 32gig then it has to be formatted in NTFS but Leopard can't write to it, and on the other hand Windows can't read the Mac partition right?
Secondly, i would like to use the USB 2.0 interface so i can use the drive in my other Firewire-less Windows laptops and at work, but will this interface be fast enough for Acid Pro when it's accessing multiple audio files at once? I do have a couple of newish 500 GB SATA drives i'm thinking of putting into an enclosure but now the MB has no express slot i can't go for an eSATA interface, or can I?
And finally, is there any truth in the rumour that the sound in a bootcamped copy of Windows is very quiet compared to Leopard? I will be using an external audio interface for pro recording however.
I'm sorry if these have been asked before but i did a search, found a few answers but couldn't really find the answers to all my questions.
    Many thanks in advance.
    John

Windows 7 audio drivers and codecs are still a work in progress but should be much better.
You can read and write to NTFS with 3rd party drivers from Mac side, and Mac OS 10.6 will allow reading HFS+ natively from Windows with its driver. Third, MacDrive allows reading and writing to HFS+ from Windows now.
There are some ExpressCards with eSATA and USB but the iMac doesn't offer expansion, which is why I would never buy one. And there isn't a slimmed down Mac Pro workstation. The eSATA would be fine, and USB3 won't be here until 2010.
I think you'd love a PC using Core i7 with all the drives and memory, audio card and graphics. I went from Windows on Mac (and still do) but added a couple PCs which are much easier to configure and use.
You could make most of your internal drive be Windows, leave a small basic Mac OS. You can't have more than Mac OS and Windows. There are other hidden partitions that go against the 4 that MBR allows.

  • Considering switching to mac but need some help

Sorry if this is inappropriate for this forum or section. Wasn't sure where else to post. My pc finally died and am tired of viruses, pc problems etc, so I got the green light for a mac from my wife (thinking of a mini). My question is how do I get all my backed up data on my western digital my book (pc formatted) onto my new mac? Is it possible?
I was thinking it is since I've read that macs can run windows. Theoretically I would think that if I turned the mac in windows and plugged my My book external drive, it should recognize it, right?

The Mac should recognize your drive without dealing with installing Windows.
If your data that is backed up is just in folders, etc, then why even mess with windows? I thought the whole idea was to get away from the PC virus issues and stuff.
Mac's can *read and write* to PC drives that have been formatted with Fat32 (common with Win98, XP and most external drives) and they can read drives that have been formatted with NTFS (common with XP internal drives). After you get your data off of the drive, you can use Disk Utility to change the partition type to HFS+ and format the drive for Mac's and Time Machine or just use it with Fat32 for transferring files to PC's etc.
You mount the drive by plugging it in, it shows up on the Mac desktop, drag the files onto your Mac and put them in the proper folders or make new ones.
If your files are standard computer files like PDF's, Doc's, Jpg's, then they will open with MacIntosh versions of the programs you used on the PC or other programs specific to the Mac. In the PDF example, I don't even install Adobe Acrobat Reader on a Mac (who needs the security issues) and use Apple's Preview program instead.
For my clients who are switchers, there are usually only two programs in common use on a PC that are a problem for Mac's - The PC version of Quickbooks is better and there is no MS Access Database program for the Mac. There are Mac versions of almost all of the most common PC programs, or excellent replacement programs for the Mac. Programs are easy to deal with, it's the data that you can't replace.
Deal with Windows if you have to, but many don't and use their files and hardware anyway...
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac mini as file server and Mediacenter

I have bought a Mac mini with Lion and want to use it as a fileserver and a mediacenter. After formatting my external disks and putting the data back on I have now been able to share them on my network (mix of Mac and PC). My problem is the Mac mini will freeze up quite often and and therefore I cannot get access to my files from the other computers in my network and it will stall every no and then when watching a DVD.
Is there a power saving option I have overlooked? When it goes into standby mode I cannot always wake it up again but have to make a hard reset.
I am using XBMC as mediacenter software. I also have IDrive running as online backup and Evocam as videosurveillance software.

You say disks.  How many and what brand and how is the connection
    made (USB/Firerwire)?

Can you post your settings that you currently have?

Can you disable IDrive and the Evocam software for a while
and see if the issue persists?  I don't see XBMC as being an issue
as I use it on multiple Macs without a problem.

  • Using Automator to Find Date in file name--Help!

    Hey guys,
    I have this automator question.
Daily I record a radio show. Due to cpu limitations I cannot record it right to AAC. (I use the radio shark) So I record it to aiff format. Radio shark adds in the current date to the file name so I know what date the show is from. What I need to know is if I can get an Automator action to find a file in the Radioshark folder with "Radioshow" and the Current Date in the filename.
How can I have automator use the current date to search for the file.
I need the date variable included because sometimes my automator app doesn't delete the old file, so at times the radio shark folder could contain numerous "RadioShow" files.
    Any help appreciated.
    17inch Imac 800Mhz/12 inch PB   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hey thanks. That did work. A new question. It takes about 60 minutes to import the file. Once the file is imported I would like automator to change the Track Info and put it into a specific playlist.
Most of the time the file imports but does not finish the actions in automator (the track info and moving it to the playlist). I am assuming that it is "timing out" during the import process. Is there a way to pause the automator actions for 60 minutes after it begins the import process and then completed the subsequent actions?
    Any help appreciated!

  • How to check DFS replication status in windows 2008 r2 file server

    Hi,
I have created File server DFS namespace between 2 windows 2008 R2 server. namespace mode is 2008. I have copied 3 TB data on file server 1. now it is getting replicated from file server 1 to file server 2. till now the data is not fully replicated.
My question is how can I check the status of DFS replication? how will I come to know that the initial replication is completed.

Scorpio. Yes you are right. Microsoft officially says it will not work. My apologies. Thanks for the correction.
Do Ultrasound and Sonar work with DFS Replication?
No. DFS Replication has its own set of monitoring and diagnostics tools. Ultrasound and Sonar are only capable of monitoring FRS.
Is there a way to know the state of replication?
Yes. There are a number of ways to monitor replication:
DFS Replication has a management pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007 that provides proactive monitoring.
DFS Replication has an in-box diagnostic report for the replication backlog, replication efficiency, and the number of files and folders in a given replication group.
Dfsrdiag.exe is a command-line tool that can generate a backlog count or trigger a propagation test. Both show the state of replication. Propagation shows you if files are being replicated to all nodes. Backlog shows you how many files still need to replicate
before two computers are in sync. The backlog count is the number of updates that a replication group member has not processed. On computers running Windows Server 2008 R2, Dfsrdiag.exe can also display the updates that DFS Replication is currently
    replicating.
Scripts can use WMI to collect backlog information—manually or through MOM.

  • Using Time Capsule as a File Server

In my current set-up, I need to use my 3TB Time Capsule as a router, time machine destination for a couple of Macs and as file server (about 1TB in size).
The file server files will not be on any of the Macs so need to be backed up separately to a 1TB USB drive.
Apple has confirmed that the TC can be partitioned easily and, although unsupported, you can use third party apps to back up the file server to an external drive.
Does anyone have any real experience of doing this?
I have the option to us e a different router and to sort the time machine back-ups without needing the TC which means the TC would be used only as a file server.  Would you recommend another product to the TC if you only needed a home file server?
    Any help much appreciated!

To answer your question, yes but I would not use two Time Capsules. Just purchase one Time Capsule and then one external hard drive (cheaper than a Time Capsule) and connect the hard drive to the Time Capsule via USB. You can use the Airport Utility to archive the contents of your Time Capsule to the external hard drive using the Archive feature (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281).
In fact, it may be worth buying two external hard drives so you can keep one offsite in case of disaster, theft, etc. You then rotate the external hard drives weekly (or whatever you choose) so you always have a current backup offsite.

Thanks for your response and yes I understand what you are saying. Maybe you could explain why "email users" hate HTML email with a passion.
These tend to be technical users who have a more purist attitude about email. They prefer that email be text-only, and consider HTML formatting to be superfluous for most messages. And I do think they have a point. If you have 100 plain-text emails and 100 HTML emails, you will notice that the HTML emails take up noticeably more disk space. And if the HTML email senders have loaded down their default emails with background images, signatures with corporate logos and winmail.dat attachments and all manner of embedded ornamentation, and (I never even thought people went this far) animations, then a simple email reply like "Thanks! I'll see you this evening," ends up carrying an tremendous additional amount of file size and network bandwidth overhead just to carry those six words. It not only means more disk space consumed, but it ripples all through the system: More space is required for backing up and archiving your emails, plus more mail server space and network bandwidth are consumed per message. Purists see this as an incredible waste of resources.
The message body of at text email can simply be "Thanks! I'll see you this evening."
The HTML version, at a bare minimum, must be
    {html}
    {p}"Thanks! I'll see you this evening."{/p}
    {/html}
(replaced angle brackets with curly brackets so Apple Forums won't try and format it)
Already that's almost double the amount of characters required to send the message, just to format it in HTML. And that's if no fonts, styles, graphics, or media have been applied. If they are, the number of actual characters sent balloons dramatically.
I'm in the middle. I don't hate HTML email, I'll even turn it on when I think formatting will help my message. But I like to use disk space efficiently, so I've set plain text as my default for sending messages.

  • How to move all my data to a server and wirelessly access it from any Mac

Hi. I have a PB, an MBP, a Mac Mini and a new iMac, which all serve different purposes. I have got to the point at home where I want to have one private account with all my data on a HD and to just log in to it from whichever machine I happen to be using. I currently have an Airport Express as my wireless router and am considering buying and Airport Extreme/Time Capsule. I have about 500GB of data, which is growing pretty quickly since I have use of an HD camcorder, so I will buy one or two large drives in addition to the various external HDs I already (that total about 850GB) have. What is the best way (at relatively low cost) for me to set up my wireless home network in order to achieve the above goal?
    Thanks for your time.
    Matthew Whiting

Don't go there. At least not for all your data.
The relatively low throughput and high latency of the wireless connection (at least compared to direct-attached disks) will make accessing large files cumbersome and frustrating. Since you specifically mention HD video you should be aware that what takes a long time now will take a lot longer if the media is accessed over the wireless network.
So while your goal might be technically feasible, it's unlikely to be workable.
Instead you should consider focussing your centralized data on content that makes sense (e.g. maybe your iTunes library), and store data locally where it's more appropriate (e.g. consider one machine for video editing).
Therefore you need to analyze your data - both in terms of content (what you have) and use (how you access it) to determine what makes sense to store centrally. Once you have that it will be easier to form a plan.
