Considering v2 purchase - large library size - switch from Expression Media

I have been using iView Media Pro (now Expression Media) for years. I prefer its method of referencing files instead of absorbing them into a library like iPhoto. Plus its interface is much more complex and useful than iPhoto.
On my latest Intel machines the Expression Media interface feels very clunky and slow. I just downloaded the latest Aperture v2 trial to see the improvements over v1. In playing around I tested referencing a few image folders. The testing folders of images on my harddisk occupy about 35MB. Strangely my Aperture trial library is 90MB!!! I imagine that Aperture saves thumbnails to speed preview but does anyone know how my library could be 3x as large as files it's referencing? In theory there should be no images in the library as I added the files without importing them so it should be small. This behavior baffles me. I have dug down into the Aperture Trial Library package and found the thumbnail file is about 80MB!!! Can that be right?
Any thoughts?

Very informati've post bberenbaum. Personally I concur and emphasize two points: Apple players are primarily limited to Itunes and Cd's. There is a HUGE range of interesting music sites that this limitation excludes. And, as far as hard dri've size/space goes. The 5gigs that my micro has is WAY more than I need to carry around a months worth of music ( I add and subtract tracks on a monthly basis to rotate in new stuff so that I dont get tired of songs) but I did not forsee needing space for podcasts. Even though they are usually small bit rate files, the one's I subscribe to, This Week In Tech, The Dawn and Drew Show, etc, are always longer than 30 minutes. I currently have about 5 podcasts loaded up, and they consume a scary amount of space.
So my personal recommendations are: Buy a player that gives you access to a wide range of music sites and get way more disc/flash space than you think you will need. I find 5gigs just right.

  • Switching from express 7.2.1 to pro 7.2.1

I recently did the switch from express to pro (both 7.2.1 mac osx 10.4.6) and am impressed by the upgrade. Most of the songs I created in express are loading up in pro, except one. The one that doesn't work loads, but always crashes when I try to save it, even if I save it as a new project or use the save a copy as command. The big difference between the song that doesn't work and the ones that do is that the one that doesn't is significantly larger than the others. It's got a ton of audio files, automation, and is fairly long.
Has anyone run into problems loading or saving express songs in pro?
Any advice on how to save this session so I can move on in Logic pro?

remove things you don't need, (see the audio window first, select unused, delete ), then save as project copying all files, inst....
You can also try it with the audio engine off. Beyond that, I think they are the same file, but express doesn't allow you to open, edit, write certain things

  • Switching from Virgin Media..

Hey, I'm switching from Virgin Media very soon because of their dreadful customer service and looking around BT Infinity is in my area so i thought why not. But the reason why im posting is that I've been on NTL/Virgin Media for about 8 Years, but before that i had a BT phoneline.
When i got in contact with somoneone at a BT Call centre they said I would have to pay a £130 fee to change my line BACK to BT, i told them i used to be a BT customer but they said I still have to pay the full amount. Seeing as I've been a BT customer in the past, does that make my line still BT? I really dont want to have to fork out £130 at this time of the year.
TL;DR - Been a former BT customer but currently on Virgin Media, switching back to BT for Infinity Broadband and not sure if i have to pay the BT Line installation fee.
    Thanks alot in advance
     - Cam

have you contacted the sales team, to find out if they can do you a special offer?
you will be safe and secure with Bt's call centre, as it is in India, and their dedicated staff are not permitted to deviate from their scripted diagnoses, so although slow, they will get to solve any  problem when it arises.
welcome to the world of last wednesday week.
there's now't wrong with 2 cans and a piece of string. at certain times, it is often faster.

  • CSS Designer keeps switching from the media query I want to edit to Global

CSS Designer keeps switching from the media query I want to edit to Global. How can I keep it in the same editing mode so that I'm not all of a sudden making global changes instead of confined to the particular media query?

I feel your pain.  I see that using styles apply to the entire paragraph.
So I have a kluge until some really bright minds step in.
Open the Pages document that you need to edit.
Have in memory a single word that is in (red) in your desired font style.
Just type a word in (red), make your font color adjustments. Copy the (red) word into memory. Delete from the document.  I put this in parantheses.
Paste the (red) word where you want to make an edit
    Sample
I have to edit papers that require me to type red words into each sentence, sometimes several times per sentence.
Every time I write a word in red, the next time I click into the sentence (or anywhere else on the document), the color defaults back to black.
So let's say you want three edits.  I am showing all three, but you'd just do it as you encounter things that need correcting.
    Sample
I have to edit papers that require me to type red words into each sentence, sometimes several times per sentence (red).
Every time I write (red) a word in red, the next time I click (red) into the sentence (or anywhere else on the document), the color defaults (red)back to black.
Type directly into the (red) or double click on red and make your edit(s) one at a time.
    Result
    Sample
I have to edit papers that require me to type red words into each sentence (only those that needs correcting), sometimes several times per sentence (that sounds painful).
Every time I write (you mean type, not write) a word in red, the next time I click (with the mouse) into the sentence (or anywhere else on the document), the color defaults (reverts) back to black.

  • Why has the total library size gone from my itunes

I downloaded the latest iTunes the other day and now the total library size is missing and the window size is actually too large for my monitor too, though I've not altered any settings.
I HATE not having the library size showing at the bottom of the page when my iTunes library is open.  Anyone know what's happened?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library as iTunes Library (Corrupt) and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Library size differs from Vault size

I just made a new Aperture Vault. My Aperture Library file is 41.66GB. My Vault file is 35.41GB.
    Why are these different?
I have consolidated the library as well, so I am sure that the issue is not related to referenced files.
    Thanks,
    ~BC

Thanks for that. Does my vault size (85% of the library size) seem about right to you?
I only ask because the whole point of the vault is to be sure nothing is lost ... so I want to be sure I have this set up properly.
    Thanks,

  • Switching from Virgin Media to BT

    Hello
I've been a BT landline customer for over 20 years but my internet providor has always been NTL and then Virgin through cable. I would have chose ADSL but for years when performing speed checks I was only able to reach 4-8MB, apparently due to poor telephone lines. I think BT said I would have to pay if I wanted new lines put in but I cannot remember.
I would like to switch from my 50MB (recently upgraded to 100MB) to BT Infinity2. When entering my phone number it says I can get 48.8MB. I would like to know more information about this.
    1. Would BT install a fibre line for me without charge? Would/could they use the existing cable line in my house by NTL/Virgin?
    2. I already have a landline tariff but when selecting a package for broadband it says I must pay an addition 12.50 for a telephone line.
    3. If Infinity2 is not using telephone lines why would one need to buy a telephone line/pay for line rental anyway?
    4. I am utterly annoyed with Virgin Media forcing us to use their Superhub routers - the coaxial cable plugs straight into the router and the routers firmware is appalling. I would prefer, although not necessary, to use my own router. Would this be possible? If so, what type of router would I be looking for? For virgin, it was a "cable modem router".
    5. If BT install their own lines, would they still need the 'MAC address' from virgin? I saw this written in the "switching to" articles and I first assumed this meant that it was possible but to use existing virgin media lines for BT, until I realised that MAC addresses are needed to switch between providors on ADSL lines
    6. What type of support does BT provide for its infinity2 customers? Are the call centres in the UK? Is the support line a chargable call?
    7. I'm wondering out of curiousity, can consumers on infinity2 get rDNS or buy additional IP addresses?
Apologies for the mundane questions and many thanks in advance.

***There is no static IP Address offering for infinity, but Dynamic DNS does work fine***

See answers in line, and bear in mind the following...
There are two possible technology types for Infinity- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) & Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and it looks like your area uses the latter.  in this case you are still using the existing BT copper telephone cable to your house, but new larger green cabinets will have been installed locally which your phone line will be connected to. These cabinets are then connected back to the exchange using fibre optic cable the fact that the distance to the cabinet is much shorter than the exchange means that much high speeds can be obtained in conjunction with the fact that the technology is VDSL rather than ADSL

  • Import library and playlists from Windows Media Player without duplicates

How do I import all the music and playlists from Windows Media Player into iTunes without creating duplicates?
I add the folder containing all my music to iTunes and all my music arrives nicely. I begin importing playlists and the playlist comes over with all the songs duplicated in my library. Most of my songs are on playlists but some are not.
After adding the music folder (approx 7000 songs) then all the playlists, my iTunes library now contains over 13,000 songs. The increase is due to the duplicates being created as the playlists are added.
If I skip adding the music folder and just add the playlists I get most of my music without as many duplicates but I am missing the songs which are not on any playlist. Thanks.

If it' sprotectged WMA files, no you can't add them.
If they are plain WMA (like RIPped from a CD) you can File -> Add to library and iTunes will import and convert them.

  • What will I gain/lose by moving from Expression Media to Lightroom

I've been using Microsoft products in general for years, and in the context of what I'm asking here, the Expression suite since Version 1. Expression Design doesn't come anywhere near Photoshop CS5, which I've just bought, but as well as an editing program I need a decent asset management product. At the moment I use Expression Media mainly to catalog my photographs, but also use the HTML export function to create quick slide shows for the web. Microsoft has not updated Media since version 2 (not that that is a problem in itself) but has also sold it to Phase One, who haven't yet said what they will do with it.
My questions are, will Lightroom provide the same or better functionality as Media did as an asset management tool (since Adobe at least seem to be continuing to develop the program), and what else will I gain from it. At £200 it's not a huge investment, but I wouldn't like to think I may be spending it for no real advantage.
Thanks, from an enthusiastic amateur photograper.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

Lightroom is first and foremost a media manager.
I suspect many would have reservations about this.  Lightroom is a very limited media asset manager.  I do not think this is a design goal for the application.  It is designed to manage raw files from supported cameras and some other files - jpg, psd and tiff - and track videos taken with the camera - that's about it.
Many would argue most of the development energy has gone into the dev module.
Another thing to consider is performance.  Because LR is attempting to faithfully reproduce the image as per edits to the dev module it builds and updates a large preview library which has performance and disk space implications.
As suggested, try before you buy.

  • Import from Expression Media

I have a big library of pictures which I managed in Expression Media. Each picture goes through different stages like location tagged, people tagged, etc. Each such stage is represented by a particular color. Lightroom seems to have something similar. I imported some pictures for testing but I am missing:
    1) The 'stage' tags I mentioned above
    2) The location information (country, state, city, etc)
    3) Other location information (home, park, etc)
    4) List of people in the picture
Obviously, I don't want to do all this again as it was a LOT of work. So somehow I must be able to import the tags into Lightroom 3. Sync Metadata did not do anything. Any input is appreciated.

    1) The 'stage' tags I mentioned above
I don't exactly know what that means, but I guess you might use Labels for it. Or Smart collections, with little creativity: http://blog.ericscouten.com/2008/08/lightroom-2-technique-smart-collections-and-worklists/
    2) The location information (country, state, city, etc)
That would probably be IPTC location data.
    3) Other location information (home, park, etc)
    Maybe keywords?
    4) List of people in the picture
    Keywords I'd guess...
Sorry cannot help you with your problem, but I got one succestion: Manage old images with Expression Media and new ones with Lr. As need rises, migrate old images to Lr.
I'm not EM user, but I somehow guess that roots of your problem might lie there instead of Lr. Does EM write metadata to files? If not, then there is probably problem with migrating to Lr.
I also succest that you get Peter Kroghs The DAM book, which afaik also covers migrating from one DAM to another. Also, the DAM forum (http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php) might offer you some solutions, at least there are some experienced EM users, who might be able to help you on that side.
    Good luck.

  • Downcovert large library to 192 from 312

I'm desiring to also downconvert, but save the larger files on a separate hard drive ( i have several duplicated on my 12,000 song library, as backup)..
When you convert the files on your drive that syncs with the Ipod, is there a way to sort by file size and then delete the larger, duplicate files? [recognizing that they are backed up elsewhere]
Dell Inspiron 300m Windows XP Have Gen 3 Ipod, new Video ipod, Shuffle and nano

If you have the original CD's, I HIGHLY recommend re-ripping the material from there instead of transcoding 320 to 192's. On computer speakers you probably can't hear the difference, but on any decent stereo system you will be able to hear additional artifacts from the transcoding process.
Work from the best source you have, basically. Don't transcode when you can avoid it.

  • HT4137 I purchased the iPhone 5 switched from iPhone 4S, how come if I delete a contact or add on my old iPhone it shows it on my new iPhone? How can I make it stop I'm planning on someone else using my old device

I transferred from an iPhone 4S to an iPhone 5, everything switched but it seems to be synced to my old phone. Info I delete or add a contact or music it will then do the same on my new phone. A family member will be using my old phone , how do I get it to stop syncing what I do?

If you have everything that you need on your iPhone 5 then do this to the iphone 4.
Go to settings - general - reset - erase all contents and settings - this will wipe your phone clean.
Then you can give it to your family member for use.

  • Looking to switch from Virgin Media to BT but need...

My new built house has an XNTE situated at the front of the house so have no ideal where the "master socket" will go.  In the house there are about 6 phone plugs each square and mirror finished.  Currently the VM router is in first floor lounge to the front (large 3 story house) and this lounge is rarely used for tv, gaming etc...Ideally I would like the BT router in my rear ground floor extention where most of the BT tv will be watched and so my PS3, Wii U get direct etherent connection to the BT hub.  Problem is if wired from the front XNTE, externally via the wall would need about 20-25 metres of cabling- not ideal is it?
I'm looking to get Bt infinity 2 with 76meg.
A compromise would be having the router same locale as the VM router on first floor lounge and have the BT vision box downstairs connected via powerline adaptors whilst also connected to the PS3, Wii U.  Currently I get half the speeds via powerline adaptor to the actual full speed when connected directly, which is 30 and 60 meg.  Would this setup give me sufficient speeds for online gaming, watching HD content via BT's broadband.
Could someone give me advice on which setup is best or if it doesn't matter(bear in mind I want the best speeds for Bt tv, Ps3) :-
-router first floor with downstairs, powerline plug connects BT Vision, PS3 and Wii U,
-router ground floor connected to BT Vision, PS3, Wii U with powerline plugs upstairs for wi-fi, pc...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The Openreach engineer may/will just bypass the xNTE and fit a new master socket. He should fit this where you want. It may be possible to turn one of your phone sockets into the new master socket. Obviously you will need to discuss the best options with the engineer.
If the modem can not be installed in the extension room and you are prepared to run Ethernet cable outside using CAT6 you will not get any drop in speed up to 100 meters so you could have your Homehub router in your ground floor extension. This would be a better option than powerline adaptors, which as you have found do loose speed.
If you have to use Powerline adaptors then make sure they are at least the 500Mbps ones and preferably 1Gbps one.

  • Switching from PC to Mac - iPhone syncing

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro, switching from a PC. I was wondering if there was any way I could set up my iTunes to start syncing my iPhone without losing the app data.
I've downloaded all the apps and what not, but even when I sync or back it up, when I check "Sync Apps", it says it will erase all the information from my iPhone and replace it. Is there a way to keep all the data, and/or move it to my Mac?

Yeah, that's the first time I've heard that one (switching from Mac to PC). I know this doesn't pertain to your question, but why are you switching? I'm running Vista and my next comp will definitely be a Mac. In addition to AV, Antisypware, and a firewall, be sure to get a Registry cleaner and defragmenting program (unless you want to use the crappy one that comes with Windows). I'm looking forward to not having to spend so much time keeping Windows working right and money securing it.
