Consistant problem with music in menus

Hi For several projects in a row, I have had the same problem with adding music to my menus. The music plays thru for about 30 seconds, then, before repeating the cycle, the first few notes come in for a couple seconds. Why would these first few notes appear between cycles?
Any ideas? Thanks very much, Bob

Thanks for your thoughts, Shawn. This problem is really getting weird, though. Please bear with me: the 30-second aif file that I created for the Menu, was originally taken from a aif part of the movie sound track. I extracted the piece into a sound editing program I use called Peak. In Peak I created a discreet aif file which DOES NOT CONTAIN the notes that constitute the 'blip' which is turning up between cycles of the menu. The notes in the blip don't even exist in the aif file that was dragged onto the menu!! (They are, however, the notes that follow in the original file that the new aif was created from.) How and why would DVDSP find these notes and insist on playing them? This is like Twilight Zone.

    I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

    Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
    As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
    Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
    So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
    As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

  • Problems with music on iOS8?

    Hi!
    I'm currently using iOS8.0 on my iPhone 5 and have had problems with music deleting frequently and my phone freezing when I try to re-download it. for some reason it's only letting me have about 70 songs at any given point, but if I have more than that then the next time I open the music app I tend to find a lot of them have been deleted? This is incredibly irritating as I frequently use my phone for music, also whemever I'm downloading songs it tends to freeze my phone and I have to restart it.
    I've tried updating to 8.2 but it's not letting me currently.
    Any suggestions?

    Oops, it says I'm on iPhone 4 iOS 6.1.1, but I'm on iPhone5 iOS 8

  • Playlist problems with music on a Mac.

    I somewhat recently switched to using multiple Mac's as my main desktop machines, all running Lion.  I'm trying to do everything "the Mac way", preferring Apple-provided apps where possible.  While im 95% happy, the funny thing is that the part that works worst is playing music.  So please school me in the Mac way of making music come out of the headphone jack.
    Background: For over a decade, I've been ripping all my CDs, and storing them on a server.  That's done by converting the tracks into mp3 format, and storing them in a directory tree, one directory per CD.  The names of the tracks are very simple - they are 1.mp3, 2.mp3 and so on.  Each track hasID3 tags with album, track title (usually the movement name, like Allegro or Andante), and the artist.  Each directory contains a playlist in M3U format, cunningly always called all.m3u (as it contains all tracks in this directory). Many directories also contain other playlists.  For example, if the CD had both Bruch and Mendelssohn's violin concerti, it would probably have two extra playlists, called bruch.m3u and mendelssohn.m3u.  Or if it contained Beethoven's 1st and 2nd symphonies, it would have 1.m3u and 2.m3u.  Navigation and search is done by a series of html pages that are stored in the same directory tree, making locating music (whole CDs = directories, whole works = playlists, and individual tracks = mp3 files) quite simple.
    This whole directory tree is avaiable through a HTTP server, mounted as a remote file system (for example by AFP or NFS), copies exist on some of the laptops I carry with me, and much of it is also copied onto USB sticks.
    With both Windows and Linux desktop machines, this was very easy to use: point a web browser at the directory tree, available through a http server within my house.  Click on an individual track (an individual mp3 file), and it immediately starts playing (since all sensible players buffer).  Point at a playlist, and it immediately starts playing.  The same player can handle mp3 and m3u files, making the user interface simple and consistent.  There are no cache consistency problems: If I quit the player, edit the playlist on the server, and then click on the playlist again, the music player will pick up the new version.
    In contrast, on the Mac nearly nothing works, and the little that works works badly.
    If you click on an individual track (a single mp3 file), it actually starts playing in the Safari tab.  But that player (I suspect it's a stripped-down version of Quicktime embedded in Safari) is extremely stripped down: it doesn't even attempt to display ID3 tags and claims that everything is "live broadcast".  It doesn't react to F8, so you can't quickly pause the music if the phone rings or someone comes into my office (you have to mouse over to the Safari window and click, way too slow).  And there is no way to rewind while playing.  But at least something comes out of the headphones, and it is the track I expected to hear.
    Now, with playlists, this completely breaks.  If you click on the link to the m3u file in the web browser, Safari downloads the playlist, then starts iTunes. Unfortunately, it completely forgets to tell iTunes the context, so iTunes is incapable of doing anything with that playlist: the playlist "waldstein.m3u" contains entries 1.mp3, 2.mp3 and 3.mp3 for the three movements of the Waldstein sonata, but iTunes doesn't get told that the playlist was found in the directory http://homeserver.example.com/music/piano/dg_419053, and that the relative file names are in that directory.  So there is no way to play a playlist from a web browser if it is being served by http.
    Strangely, if I point Safari at a html page that is on the file system (perhaps on a USB stick or a shared server), the link between Safari or Finder and iTunes works: You click on a playlist file (either on a web page or in the finder), it opens iTunes, and it starts playing the tracks.  We'll get to the broken caching below though.
    OK, plan B.  Take the whole directory (many dozens of GB, hundreds of CDs), and ask iTunes to import it all.  No problem.  iTunes is even smart enough to know that 1.m3u is a playlist (for Borodin's first symphony), containing four movements 1.mp3 through 4.mp3.  Unfortunately, iTunes is also completely stupid, and thinks that all files names 1.m3u are the same playlist. So now I end up with a large playlist called 1.m3u, which contains about a dozen symphonies, sonatas, and piano concertos mangled together.  The really amazing thing is the playlist called all.m3u, which contains every bit of music I own.  The reason I say "stupid": assuming that two m3u files that are found in different locations but have the same name must be the same playlist and must be merged is really jumping to conclusions.  But at least I can sort it by album title (usually the name of the work), and track title.  But that doesn't do anything useful.  I have probably 10 recordings of Rach3, and being presented with 30 tracks, 10 of which are the first movement, then 10 second movements ... sorting them alphabetically is not useful.
    Sorting in general doesn't work: If I by mistake ever sort within iTunes, then it loses the original order of the tracks within the playlist.  And I don't want to hear a symphony in the order "Allegro, Andante, Moderato", just because that's the alphabetic order of the track titles: it works out to 3rd - 2nd - 1st movement.  And I have not yet found a way to tell iTunes to revert all playlists to the order the tracks showed up in the playlist.
    If you tell iTunes to start playing in the middle of a large playlist (for example just the last movement of Rach3 with Argerich), it will happily continue playing within the same playlist.  Even across track / album boundaries!  Today I was playing Bach's St' John passion out of the giant "all.m3u" playlist, and at the end, it simply drifted into Borodin's 1st symphony.  Quite the shock, musically speaking.
    The final straw is this: Once you import, iTunes wants to take charge, and it caches all the metadata (namely the playlists and track filenames).  In caching this, iTunes cmpletely forgets about any form of cache coherency protocol: just because you saw a playlist once doesn't mean that it will always be in that place, and will always have the same content.  Say I have imported at home, and iTunes remembers that the 1st movement of the Waldstein is in /Volumes/HomeServer/music/piano/dg_419053/1.mp3 (and at home that file is accessible via AFP or NFS).  Now I take my MacBook to the office, open iTunes, and click, and nothing hapens: my home server is not mounted in the office.  No problem: I reach into my briefcase, which contains a 32GB USB stick.  If I now open that playlist, iTunes starts playing it ... but now I have twice as many tracks.  Do this for a while, and you end up with N copies (for large values of N) of each playlist, and at any given moment all but N-1 of those are broken.
    Even worse: Say I discover that I made a mistake, and forgot to add the last movement to a playlist.  No problem, go to the server that contains the master copy, edit the .m3u file with emacs, done.  Through a variety of rsync... scripts, the various copies on other computers or USB sticks will be updated soon.  But iTunes remembers the version it imported weeks ago.  Do I have to clear my iTunes cache every time I edit anything anywhere?  Why does iTunes even have a metadata cache, if it is usually wrong?
    So, let me summarize my problem.  I'm looking for a way to click on a mp3 or m3u file that's stored via some sensible protocol (be it HTTP, local files, remote files on a shared server, or file system on portable media), and just play it.  Without storing a play list, without rearranging the play list, without caching, but with a display of the ID3 tag and a working pause key.
    Here are my biggest complaints about the software that ships with a Mac:
    The mp3 player embedded in Safari is missing about 90% of the function.
    Linkage of playlists from Safari running on HTTP to iTunes is broken (but it works from Finder, or from Safari running on files).
    iTunes insists on importing or caching playlists.  I don't need that, I have better storage mechanisms.  I want iTunes to play one track or one playlist, and then be done and forget everything it ever knew.  Is there a way to tell iTunes no never remember anything, just play the one thing I ordered it to?
    If we absolutely must import and cache all playlist in iTunes, at least teach it to recognize that m3u files with the same name found in different places are not the same, and shall not be merged.
    Once you sort a playlist in iTunes, I don't see how you can tell it to get back to the original sort order.
    Any ideas?  Other than going back to Windows and Linux desktops, which I don't find acceptable?

    I would also recommend that in order to ensure the person is getting the document in a format they can understand that he prints to PDF the documents.  Macs do that very easily.
    OpenOffice is free and crossplatform.  If they need to edit his documents, they should all agree to use OpenOffice.

  • Problems with music player after upgrade to V20 (N...

    I upgraded my phone last week to the V20... And now when i go to transfer music through music manager it will not refresh the music library? Anyone help? When i press refresh it just freezes and i have to turn it off when turned back on i can then access the music player and play the music, but if i try to refresh it again it just freezes again and then i cant get into the music player at all, needs to be turned off again, is this something to do with the upgrade?
    Is there anything that can be done to resolve this?
    Thanks in advance
    Message Edited by geof on 10-Jul-2008 05:35 PM

    I had the same problem with v20 but if I waited for like 5 min. it finally refreshed itself. It was pretty annoying so I formatted the memory and hard-reseted the phone. Now it's OK. However I noticed that if you use the PC software to restore the phone's setting, chances are that you'll have problems. So I use it only to restore messages, calendar data and contacts-never to restore the settings so be sure to unmark this option.

  • 6125 - problem with music file names

    Hi everyone,
    I bought a Nokia 6125 last week and have a slight problem with the music player if anyone can help please:
    The music files that I have transferred to my phone have the correct song and artist name on the memory card in the Gallery, but when I open up Music Player it just displays them as squares. Any ideas on how to solve this please?
    Thanks,
    Sammy_JJ

    Hi,
    the problem might occur, because of language versions are different(source and your phone). Or the filename coding is not supported in the phone.

  • Missing ID Tags & Other Problems with Music Transfers

    Hello,
    I have been having some inconsistent problems with adding songs to my main iTunes Music Folder. Occasionally, songs will transfer without some of the ID tag information, despite the transfer (or consolidate) method used. Let me explain...
    My main 30000 song and 170 GB iTunes database is located on my PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz DP at home. I usually rip small portions of my CD’s on the road via my PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz (assuring that all of the tag information is correct). Once home, I transfer the iTunes Music Folder (usually only 1 GB big) from my PowerBook to the Desktop of my G5. From there, I drag the folder onto my iTunes window and allow it to duplicate directly into my large iTunes Music Folder. Once done, I delete the temporary iTunes Music Folder from both the PowerBook and the G5. I also delete the iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files from my PowerBook before starting up the process with another batch of CD’s. This is how I have built most of this database and only recently begun to have problems. The problem songs always retain the song name and, since I have always used the default ID tag setting, most songs show version 2.2 to 2.4.
    In my troubleshooting, I tried to make completely new iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files by using this same method with my entire main iTunes Music Folder (yes, it took a long time to finish and I had a clone for backup). Suprisingly, almost 10% of those songs suffered from the same problem! Reattempts with smaller transfers showed no change. In this process, I also noted that some song files transferred, but showed NO signs in the new iTunes Library!
    As I am a big fan of the iTunes AppleScripts by Doug Adams, I have ways to discover and correct these problems. However, I still would like to find out what is causing it. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Would converting every song to the ID tag version 2.4 make any difference? Obviously, this is my most prized database of information and I want to protect it, as well as administer any preventitive maintenance that it needs for good health.
    If we learn from our mistakes, then I obtained my PhD years ago,
    Dr. Z.

    It shouldn't matter what size your library is - if the information is in your files then it should get imported.
    1. Are you sure your problematic mp3 files are in fact valid mp3 files? If you open Terminal.app, and type this (substituting your mp3):
    hexdump -C -n 30 ~/Desktop/Sample.mp3
    You should see some hex & ASCII come back - for example:
    00000000 49 44 33 03 00 00 00 03 13 68 54 59 45 52 00 00 |ID3......hTYER..|
    00000010 00 15 00 00 01 fe ff ff ff 00 7f 00 7f 00 |..............|
    All id3v2 mp3's begin with "ID3" and the 4th byte represents the id3v2 tag version (2,2, 2.2.1, 2.3, 2.4); mp3's with an id3v1 headers are a little odd, but they generally begin with "FF FB" or "FF FA". I've seen moov files masquerading... all kinds of things. These won't hold tag data, and so would exhibit the behavior you describe. I myself got duped into making these abominations by using QuickTime to select a chunk of an mp3 and renaming to "file.mp3" - when it was a full blown quicktime movie that it really exported as.
    2. Are you sure the information exists within your file at all? All tags get written back into the file (except I think rating and certainly playcount). You can use any number of utilities to get at the data, some easy (python/perl utilities) or that require compiling (id3lib, taglib). You can get use the above method (with a longer number than 30) or a hex editor and look for the values manually as well.
    Using for example PyID3 (http://icepick.info/projects_old/pyid3/), download & extract; open a Terminal.app window and type:
    export PYTHONPATH=/Some/path/to/YOUR/PyID3_folder
    (or you can just type up the the = and drag-n-drop the folder onto the window & hit return. Then type:
    python -c 'import id3'
    Then in the examples folder, drag-n-drop the "listid3v2.py" script onto that same terminal window/session, and then an mp3 file (and hit return). If whatever information is missing from there, it isn't in your file. Note: PyID3 might have some issues with a v2.4 tag (specifically year is carried on the TDRC tag, and TYER is obsoleted). You can get an v2.4-enabled id3lib binary here:
    http://members.verizon.net/pucklock/id3Infiltr8/IDInfiltr8.htm
    Find "id3info" in the support folder, and drag-n-drop that binary onto a Terminal.app window, followed by your mp3 file. It should spit back all your info (except Grouping). The application itself should do much the same, just not the full breadth of tags available - just use it on copies.
    3. Converting to a different tag version wouldn't impact most tags (year being 1 major exception) - the other conversions (latin1, unicode, blahblah) woudn't change anything if you use mainly ASCII text. It could if you're big into Ukranian Progressive Polka - and used Cyrillic to tag everything.

  • Problems with music app after upgrading to iOS 5

    i'm very particular with the organization of my ipod stuff. it has to have album art and it has to be properly sorted out by artist and album. after upgrading to iOS 5 i found several problems with the music app:
    1. some artists dont show on the artist section. i've tried fixing the album artist info, sorting info etc and nothing.
    2. some albums duplicate themselves in the albums section and it only gets cured if you delete a certain song in the album. if you try putting the song back the albums duplicate again.
    3. some album art dont show. i've tried plugging in the album cover directly to the song/s in the ipod, and deleting the song and recopying the song from itunes and still nothing.
    anyone care to weigh in?
    did i mess up the installation?

    I just spent hours trying to solve same (I have a iPod Touch 4th Gen) and I am very picky about its organization too. What I can tell you:
    1- The artists suddenly not showing in the artist section:  Double-check that their albums are not marked as "part of a compilation"... because I had 8 artists disappearing after the upgrade and all their albums were marked as "part of...". After removing that "compilation" tag, all 8 artists reappeared where they had been all along under the previous iOS, namely under the Artists category.
    2- I had an album that did not want the artwork to show. And each time I was able to transfer it back with the art, it would duplicate tracks on the iPod Touch. I finally was able to solve it by deleting manually from the iPod the album (by slowing dragging my finger to the right on the album title and click on the delete button when it appeared) then by deleting it also from the iTunes library and syncing. Then I reloaded the album in iTunes and resynced on the iPod Touch and the album reappeared without duplicates and with the artwork.
    3- Finally, one album was correct (track-wise) but no artwork. I double-checked everything and manually check the info for each track and 2 tracks had not artwork attached to it and a 3rd had 2 artworks. I manually attached the correct artwork to each track THEN to the whole album. Then I resynced and everything FINALLY worked fine.
    OUFF!

  • Problem with music player - can't view tracks!

    I've had my 5800 since 03/09 with no problems with the music player until now and  I have around 7GB of music on the memory card and a few tracks on the phone memory itself.  I can't play this music through the music player anymore though.
    When I select 'All songs' it only comes up with 8 tracks, some of which are on the phone memory, some on the memory card.  This just happened overnight about 4 weeks ago, before it was working fine.
    If I look at the memory card on the PC all the tracks are visible.  If I access the music throught the 'File Manager' on my phone all the tracks are also visible and will play when selected.  Can anybody help me?  I only bought the phone for it's music playing capabilities and it's really frustrating!!  Thanks in advance.

    Try to use some alternative Music Player applications such us Moove or others, and try to delete some unused tracks...May be the problem is that you have too much audio files on your 5800.

  • Problems with pull-down menus

    I have been having a lot of trouble with Safari Version 7.0.2 (9537.74.9) since upgrading to 10.9.2.   One such problem is with pull-down menus in websites.   (This is as distinguished from the pull-down menus of Safari itself.)   Many websites have pull-down menus.   These website menus do not work effectively in Mavericks.  For example, one website that is very important to me has a menu that is longer than the height of my monitor.  And the selections that I almost always need are at the bottom of that menu.  When I scroll down that menu, the menu proceeds too fast, and I almost always overshoot the selection that I want.   At that point, then, Safari stops the operation of the pull-down menu, and I have to reload the whole page.
    Safari gets worse.  Often I try to print a webpage to PDF.   When I pull down the "PDF" menu in the print window, I have to be very, very careful to select the exact selection "save as PDF."  If I don't, then Safari crashes, and I get a dialog box asking me if I want the OS to send a notice to Apple.   I click "Yes."  I wish the button said, "Yes, of course, right now, without delay," but it does not.   And then I have to wait for Safari to start up again.
    Is there a solution to this problem?

    Hi, Cesidio, welcome to Apple's user-to-user discussion forums.
    You have the last version of Safari that will work with OS X 10.2.x. You might want to give Firefox a try.

  • 5800 Sooo many problems with music Player

    Hey everyone... I'm kind of at my wit's end here... I got the 5800 about 3 weeks ago, and I've just had problem after problem with the music functions...
    #1 problem: I don't use Nokia music as my main player (obviously, who does?) I use media monkey or itunes.
    #2: I synced using media monkey once manually with a few albums and it worked perfectly, then I tried auto sync -all albums added to the card became "unknown" artists and albums... manual sync no longer works
    #3: completely separate to this, music I add using nokia music periodically decides that it is by unknown artist and unknown album and unknown genre
    #4: this happens only sometimes with music, but Always with podcasts
    #5: Podcasts are now blocked from me entirely, I can only enter 'by title' and then tapping on anything within it gives 'system error' - I had this once before and sort of fixed it by taking everything off the card and putting it back on, that doesn't work anymore. (ARGH)
    #6: even from day 1 I've had problems with the headset in the box... I use my own headphones with the remote, but it also periodically stops working, along with the handset volume key (but oddly, the volume key works with radio) I also fixed this once by adding new files and deleting others in nokia music, that doesn't work now either
    #7: I reset it once, deleting everything useful, but still leaving me with all the problems
    #8: I don't think it's news to anyone that Nokia music sucks big time but i honestly can't get it to load without it crashing 3 times first. It is resource hungry and the f***ing splash blocks everything when it tries to load - I also can't edit the properties of anything once it's on the phone which is s**t
    #9: can someone please help me find an alternative sync program so i don't have to use nokia music?
    #10: nokia, your forum editing gadget is buggy... I try to delete a space and it deletes two characters instead.
    HELP ME PLEASE I'M BEGGING YOU
    Thanks.
    Meg

    I'm rather sorry Meg to hear that you believe i am patronising you. you are clearly making an assumption that is untrue, as if you had read my post clearly you would have seen that i am offering possible solutions which is the purpose of this board. whether this comes across as patronising because i have had prior experience with your problems, and not saying 'may' or 'maybe' all over my post just to make sure = you taking my advice too personally.
    and yes, you CAN defragment the registry, programs such as Auslogics BoostSpeed perform this function, and if you do not believe me, then Google defragmentation, read documentation, unfortunately you are incorrect on this notion. and as I said, i am offering solutions, you are the one who is assuming that i believe you have an incompetent level of knowledge which is not the case. i am offering solutions, you just took it too personally. and at the end of my post there is a , which stands for a light-hearted joke, if that hadn't been there perhaps you would have justification to take issue with me. but again i am stating possible causes.
    so just chill out ok? we are all trying to help you on these boards, some of us offer a more technical approach to attempting to solve problems, but it does not mean we are patronising users. hope your problems with your phone can be solved.
    If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • Itunes 8 visualizer problems with music

    yeah i just got itunes 8 few days ago, and i was litening to music with the new visualizer on then i heard all sorts of cracking noises, even the music started to slow down. and it only cracks and slows down while i have the new visualizer on!
    i dont get it! how can the visualizer make the music crack to the point where it sounds like the speakers are going to expload, and how can it make the music slow down?
    how do i get ride of all the cracking and slow music with the new visualizer on?

    I have recently noticed problems with the visualizer on my brand new MacBook with 2.4GHz and 4GB or RAM; It won't render the effects some times. I have tried it with nothing else running except iTunes and it still will not work properly sometimes. I would post some pictures but it seems i am unable to. If you want to see them (2) than leave an email address for me to send them to.

  • Focus Problem with JTree and Menus

    Hi all,
    I have a problem with focus when editing a JTree and selecting a menu. The problem occurs when the user single clicks on a node, invoking the countdown to edit. If the user quickly clicks on a menu item, the focus will go to the menu item, but then when the countdown finishes, the node now has keyboard focus.
    Below is code to reproduce the problem. Click on the node, hover for a little bit, then quickly click on the menu item.
    How would I go about fixing the problem? Thanks!

    You can provide a cell renderer to the JTree to paint the checkBox.
    The following code checks or unchecks the box with each click also:
    _tree.setCellRenderer(new DefaultTreeCellRenderer()
      private JCheckBox checkBox = null;
      public Component getTreeCellRendererComponent(JTree tree,
                                                    Object value,
                                                    boolean selected,
                                                    boolean expanded,
                                                    boolean leaf,
                                                    int row,
                                                    boolean hasFocus)
        // Each node will be drawn as a check box
        if (checkBox == null)
          checkBox  = new JCheckBox();
          checkBox .setBackground(tree.getBackground());
        DefaultMutableTreeNode node = (DefaultMutableTreeNode)value;
        checkBox.setText(node.getUserObject().toString());
        checkBox.setSelected(selected);
        return checkBox;
    });
