Consistency Failure.

Hello Experts,
A consistency job failed with an errror of "ABAP/4 processor: TSV_TNEW_PAGE_ALLOC_FAILED".
Any suggestion, how to fix this ?
Thank you
Regards
Rahul Chitte

Hi Rahul,
Any job after it runs, it will writeback the results as application log and the logs
will get stored in the livecache.
By any chance, if the logs are extended and if it not able to writeback within
the available memory, then it will throw an error (the same which you have
referred)
Ask your basis team to checkback the memory consumed and ask him to
increase it accordingly.
This issue will normally happen in older scm versions.  If yours is the same
case, then you need to apply latest support pack which will reduce this error.
Please confirm

  • Consistent failure at installing Windows 7 with BootCamp

A couple of weeks ago the 1TB hard drive of my mid-2010 21.5 inch iMac died, and I had it replaced with a 2TB hard drive.
As an architect, it is important for me to have access to Windows 7 (at least) so that I can make use of the Autodesk Revit software, among other programs. It is very important that I install Windows 7 on my new hard drive ASAP!
My SuperDrive seems damaged; it has trouble reading disks, as well as burning them (i.e. it simply cannot burn disks) and to circumvent this I purchased an external disk drive (a "LaCie Slim DVD" USB connected disk drive) which I have plugged in to my iMac. While I can confirm that this drive works fine - it was capable for one of burning a disk at 8x - I am encountering a problem when I try to restart the computer and commence installing Windows 7.
Specifically, I get a black screen (in the microsoft DOS kind of style) with a line of text saying, roughly: 'No boot disk detected -- please insert a boot disk and press any key to continue'.
Obviously, my boot disk is inserted. I have tried using Startup Disk to force the computer to use the disk in my external disk drive, but it hasn't worked. I have even tried using the old, damaged SuperDrive in the iMac but it presents me with the same screen. Sometimes it seems as though the external drive isn't activated when I start the computer - but other times it does have a glowing green light and makes that disk drive noise - even when the black screen with 'No boot disk detected -- please insert a boot disk and press any key to continue' is showing.
So what is my ultimate question?
How can I install Windows 7 on my iMac with a busted SuperDrive, using my external Disk drive that my computer seems to be ignoring?
I know MacBook Air laptops are capable of installing Windows with a USB - is that right? - can a very clear tutorial be provided to me as to how I can go about doing this?
I simply have to have this installed on my computer so I can access Revit ASAP, please help!

There could be another workaround, but I hesitate to mention it:
Install Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac and use it to create a Windows 8.1 virtual machine.
    DISCLAIMERS:
    1. I have not tried Parallels Desktop 9 under Mavericks, nor Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp under Mavericks, so this is not a personal endorsement, nor can I provide specific help because I'm still using Parallels 7, and Windows 7, not Parallels 9 and Windows 8.1
    2. Parallels probably does not provide adequate performance for your Windows application software, compared with a Boot Camp installation.
    3. There could well be compatibility issues with your Windows software and hardware. The mainstream stuff like Microsoft Office is fine. The more esoteric the software and more specialized the hardware (digitizers, plotters, 3-D printers), absolutely no guarantees.
So, Parallels 9 allows you to create virtual Windows machines that DO NOT REQUIRE BootCamp partitions, and you can install a legitimate copy of Windows from either a DVD or USB.
If you still want to give it a shot, download a free full version of Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac for a 14-day free trial here:
    http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/#tab4
Once the free trial has expired, it's $79.99 to purchase a license for one machine. You do not have to re-install and re-download if you purchase a license. you simply install the license code into the trial copy. If you already own a recent version of Parallels, there might be a less expensive upgrade available for $49.99.
I have successfully installed my legitimate OEM copy of Windows 7 64-bit copied to a USB stick, while running OS X 10.8.5 with Parallels 7, and my legitimate OEM copy of Windows XP from CD. It's not strictly plug and play. You do have to configure the Parallels Desktop settings to know where to look for the Windows installation files.
There is also VMware, and other virtual-machine software out there, but I have no experience with them.

  • Consistent failure of unit

    August 2013 – purchased
Nov 2013 – realized I was unable to load Contacts.  Visited The Mobile Shop (TMS);  they couldn’t figure it out.
Through 2013, 2014 – not able to load contacts; although phone messages received, no ‘history’ log of incoming or outgoing calls.
July 2014 – screen unresponsive.  After several visits, TMS realized settings required ‘double-tap’ on screen.  Reset.  Not sure how this setting was made.
Oct – Nov 2014 – still unable to load contacts, phone numbers, etc.  Contacted Bell – their view is that the problem is with the unit, not their service; understood.  Contacted personal friend who is RIM employee – he recommended the draconian step of simply wiping out entire dbase and resetting unit (going into settings and entering ‘blackberry’).  Did this, started unit back up, and everything seems to work properly.   Entered several contacts and phone logs are now recorded.  So finally the unit is working as it was supposed to a year previous.
Dec 2014 – sporadic difficulty where screen will not respond.  TMS several times; after several (3?) visits, finally got unit to work properly…. For a couple of days, then nothing responds again.  This happens repeatedly – the unit works properly but after a couple of days everything goes haywire and it’s unresponsive; a visit to TMS restores it for another few days.
Today, a visit to TMS revealed that my screen is only working at the border area – while swiping from the edge will result in a response, tapping anywhere in the centre of the screen has no effect.
Just now, as I’m typing this, my phone rang, but I can’t answer it; swiping the button to the side does nothing…. So I jot down the displayed phone number and will call them on my home phone.
I am not a person who goes in and screws around with the ‘settings’.  I don’t need all the pictures, text, web-access, and downloading.   All I have ever wanted is a phone that takes messages, and some contacts.  For almost a year-and-a-half, this unit has been unable to provide me this.
Lots of acquaintances have either Blackberrys or other smartphones.  Over the year, I often pass them my phone and ask them to try it – just to see if I’m dumb, or am making a mistake.  They always pass it back saying something to the effect of ‘that’s weird’, or ‘something’s wrong there’.  They can’t make it work, either.
I dutifully believe that RIM makes a good product.  But after almost a year-and-a-half of this product providing practically no service at all, I need something better.  I would like a replacement.
When I talk to the TMS store, they say I need to contact you (Blackberry) regarding this.

Hey, I took your post a complaint , since you were addressing "BlackBerry as "you", etc., and you never really ever asked for any help.
This a user to user forum. We'd be glad to help, if you'll post details etc., and all that you've done. Quite honestly, you'd more likely get better help here from other users anyway...

  • CRS Historical Reporting - printing failure !

    Hello All,
I am getting consistent failures for my users when they try to print from UCCX 8.5 CRS Historical Reporting.  From document ID 108553, and other references, I have set the shared memory to 1 from default of 0 in hrcconfig.ini, still no joy.  The error is and remains could not start print job with a window title of crystal report viewer.  Our environment has Microsoft print queues set up for users.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

I believe you are running into this bug:
    http://cdetsweb-prd.cisco.com/apps/dumpcr?identifier=CSCtn20575&parentprogram=QDDTS
CSCtn20575    Could  not start print job to network on HRC for CCX 8.0(2)
    Symptom:
Cutomers on CCX 8.0 may not be able to print to the network in Historical Reports Client even though all other print jobs work fine.  Error message states "Could not start print job" from the Crystal report viewer.
    Conditions:
Only affects customers on the 8.0 platform of UCCX.  Does not seem to matter if they are on a client system of XP or Win7.
    Workaround:
They can either map the HRC user system directly to the network printer, bypassing the print server, or save the report to the PC and then open in a PDF viewer and print from there.  Bypassing the print server seems to be a good option.

  • Apple TV does not load rented items from iTunes in less than three (3) hours depsite YouTube, Netflix and network being fine.  How can I get Apple to actually provide the iTunes service I am paying for?

I'm just tired of waiting on this inept device and it's underserved iTunes counterpart being unable to deliver enough bandwidth to load a show within a reasonable amount of time.  I'm a big Apple fan and an equally big critic.  This whole rig is a big FAIL so far, Apple.  There is nothing ON DEMAND about the iTunes Store at this point.  Netflix and YouTube work better on Apple TV than their own iTunes Store!  And, this has been going on for a few years now, unremedied, and is only getting worse with more people buying these devices!  I do not reccommend this device to people like I used to.
The good news is, that iTunes will give refunds about 85% of the time if I explain my problem the way I have here.  SO, ATTENTION: EVERYONE WITH AN APPLE TV: If you have this same issue with iTunes Store not properly serving your paid content, do not hesitate to ask for your money back.  It's the least they can do for the amount of life wasted waiting for a show to load.  Not to mention, all the disappointments with the kids at bedtime and when my wife and I want to just relax and turn something on.
    Bottom Line: ITUNES IS UNDER-SERVED!!!
    OR
There is a massive conspiracy by cable and DSL ISPs against Apple taking away TV viewers.  Is it possible the ISPs are somehow limiting or buffering the data packets coming through the port(s) employed by iTunes Store?  Like I say, with me and many others on this forum, the problem lies solely with iTunes Store.  Youtube, Netflix, Podcasts and everything else generally serve up just fine.  The iTunes Store, however, is a consistent failure.  Something that seems unusual for Apple not to address, being so customer-centric and all.
Please share any links or insights you have here so the faithful might get to the bottom of this incredibly annoying problem. I WANT MY ATV!

There is a massive conspiracy by cable and DSL ISPs against Apple taking away TV viewers.
Most networks are overloaded and operating at full capacity.  However, a solution is coming.
Technology experts are working on a movie storage system where YOU have physical possession of the movie.
This system stores the movie digitally on an optical disk system that will not be dependent upon a congested, complicated, and fragile network.
Because all of the data is stored only a few feet from your television, all the bottlenecks are removed.  Performance and reliability are virtually flawless.
Further, the system will not utilize any form of security codes, authentications, or passwords. Once the optical disc is purchased it can be moved around freely at will, and can even be lent or given to friends and neighbors with zero hassles.

  • How can i airplay from my mac connected through ethernet to an aple tv 2 on wifi

    Hi everyone..
im having troubles using Airplay on my mac.. i connect my mac to the internet and home network using an ethernet connection to my router (non apple branded router) .. my apple tv 2  is connected to my home wifi network from the same router.. when i first set up my apple tv.. i was able to see the Airplay icon on itunes and it would let me Airplay media from my mac to my apple tv.. however.. it disconnects after a little while.. same thing with viewing my itunes library from apple tv.. i was able to detect my shared library from the apple tv.. i was able to play some media but then it disconnected after some time.. but now.. the Airplay icon doesnt show up in itunes anymore.. and i cant see my shared library from my apple tv neither.. ive looked around for a solution and followed the tip to turn the ipv6 off.. it worked for some time but now the problem is back..
i know the obvious solution is to connect my mac to the same wireless network as my apple tv.. but i would like to keep it connected through ethernet..
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
Apple TV 2 software version 4.4.4
    Thanks in advance

......i know the obvious solution is to connect my mac to the same wireless network as my apple tv.. but i would like to keep it connected through ethernet.........
I wouldn't say that was the obvious answer at all, my Mac is connected by ethernet and 6 of my 7 Apple TV's are connected by wifi, I haven't had any of your problems. The problem is most likely on your network.
    Intermittent problems
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
    Consistent Problems
A frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is the service being blocked on the network. Make sure your network isn't hidden, has a unique name, that MAC address authentication is disabled, security is set to use WPA 2 Personal and that there is only one router/device acting as a DHCP server and providing NAT services.
Make sure your router/computer allows access over the following ports
    Port
    Type
    Protocol
    Used By
    80
    TCP
    HTTP
    AirPlay
    443
    TCP
    HTTPS
    AirPlay
    554
    TCP/UDP
    RTSP
    AirPlay
    3689
    TCP
    DAAP
    iTunes/AirPlay
    5297
    TCP
    Bonjour
    5289
    TCP/UDP
    Bonjour
    5353
    TCP/UDP
    MDNS
    Bonjour/AirPlay
    49159
    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
    49163
    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
Refer to your router manual/manufacturer for any settings that are specific to that model.
Another frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is security software, in many cases configuring it correctly, disabling it or even uninstalling it can help, but in some cases the security software can cause problems that simply reconfiguring, disabling or uninstalling cannot reverse.
If you are consistently unable to activate AirPlay, have tried all the steps in this article and have security software installed on your system, you might benefit from contacting its provider or participating in any online forums they run to discuss the matter with them.

  • Cannot install AIR 2.0.4.13090 sidecar application on Windows 7 64 bit

Our team is experiencing consistent failure to install our AIR-developed application on Windows 7 64 bit. It fails to install, but apparently eventually can be installed only after a complete uninstallation of AIR and subsequent install attempts are made.
The following suggestion from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403150.html has also been tried, but errors persist:
Installing an AIR application displays the error message: "Sorry an error has occurred. The application could not be installed. Try installing it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author." (Windows Vista / Windows 7)
This error may occur during installation if the user has turned off User Account Control (UAC) operating system feature and is a standard or restricted user. From Control Panel, Open UAC and enable it. A reboot maybe required, once complete, re-try the installation.
The error messages are as follows:
    Name of Our Application
    Sorry, an error has occurred.
An error occurred while updating the application. Try updating it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author.
    Error #0
    Sorry, an error has occurred.
The application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged. Try obtaining a new installer from the application author.
This is a boxed product which is slated to ship very soon. The QA team is rejecting the builds because of this issue, which puts the entire project in jeopardy. Timely help is appreciated.

Thanks very much for keeping this issue alive.
    Let me restate the issue:
We have a AIR 2.0.4.13090 sidecar application. Installing the application for the very first time seems to work. Any uninstall or update after that runs into issues on the problematic Windows 7 64 bit machine. The installer logs all point the finger to Windows Installer having problems writing to the temp directory.
We've gone through many, many things trying to resolve this, including resetting administrative access to the temp directory and flushing the temp directory out entirely. I'm reporting this news secondhand, so it's not possible for me to directly relate the exact measures taken, step-by-step. The ONLY thing that reliably worked for running and installing updates on this AIR application was the following:
    1) Create a new administrative level user.
    2) Log in with that user.
    3) Disable firewalls.
    4) Run the updater.
    5) Log back in as normal user, delete temporary user.
if the user account created in step 1 is not deleted in step 5 and is used to attempt a further update or uninstall, it will fail. This seems to tell me that AIR is able to utilize the temp folder via Windows Installer correctly only once. After that, it dirties this directory somehow and is unable to use/write to it, and subsequent uninstalls/updates fail with error 0.
Again, the failure all show msi issues writing to the temp directory. They result in an "Error 0" alert dialog in AIR.

  • TS1741 I cannot get the remote app for Apple tv work on either my iPad or iPhone. Home sharing is "on". Any ideas?

Why won' remote app for Apple tv work on my iPad or iPhone?  Home sharing is turned on.

    Port
    Type
    Protocol
    Used By
    80
    TCP
    HTTP
    AirPlay

Refer to your router manual/manufacturer for any settings that are specific to that model.
Another frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is security software, in many cases configuring it correctly, disabling it or even uninstalling it can help, but in some cases the security software can cause problems that simply reconfiguring, disabling or uninstalling cannot reverse.
If you are consistently unable to activate AirPlay, have tried all the steps in this article and have security software installed on your system, you might benefit from contacting its provider or participating in any online forums they run to discuss the matter with them

  • Flash Player won't install on OS 10.6.8 on Mac mini

    QUESTION:
I need to use Mac OS X 10.6.8 in order to run software not supported in later versions of OSX.  I cannot succeed in installing the new versions of Flash Player in the Mac mini I need to use for this work.
I have successfully installed the version 14 flashplayer on 10.9.3 systems running on the same Mac mini (on a different partition of the same HD).  I have also successfully installed the new Flash Player on a 10.6.8 system running on an iMac.  BUT I cannot do what I need: instal the new Flash Player on a 10.6.8 system running on my Mac mini (Serial # C07FC92JDD6H, build 10K549).  I have tried to install 14.0.0.145 on this computer many many times, and the install always stops, freezing at precisely 95%.  I have downloaded the 14.0.0.145 update from at least three different download sites, to deal with possibility of corrupted version.  Repeated Google searches show many others had similar problems installing the new Flash Player versions (on different platforms and frequently with OS versions other than 10.6.8), and I have eagerly tried to learn from their successes  but NONE have worked on my particular computer.  (Nor have I seen any case of someone experiencing a similar problem on a Mac mini, either without success or with later success).  When the latest version, 14.0.0.176 came out, I eagerly tried it again a few times, but also without success.
By the way, I should mention that my latest version of Flash Player on this Mac mini is 11.5.502.  Would it shed any light on my problem if I try installing intermediate versions (Flash Player 12 through 13) on my computer, to see if they hang up?  Is there any version other than 14 that would not be rejected on the web?
I have two earlier model Mac minis that I could try installing 14.0.0.??  on if you think my consistent failures might be an idiosyncratic feature of the Mac mini whose serial number I gave above (and that the Flash player updates could work on either of the other two Mac minis).  I would gladly put the more recent model Mac mini aside if I could get the Flash Player install to succeed on one of my other Mac minis.
Thanks for any suggestions you can suggest.

This is an update from Winston Salser.
I have discovered one answer to my original question. It is a "kludge" but it works.
You can see above that I asked, among other things, if it might help for me to try installing earlier versions of Flash Player, such as Version 12 or 13.  While waiting for an answer to my question, I decided to go ahead and try installing an older version.  I was able to download version 13 from an Adobe site that has archived older Flash Player versions.  Before attempting to install it, I uninstalled the version(s) of flash Player currently on my computer.  The downloaded version 13, when I used the "get info" function, identified itself as "flashplayer_13_sa.dmg".   When I clicked on this .dmg installer it surprised me by producing an icon called "Flash Player.app"  which wasn't what I expected to happen from seeing earlier Flash installers. Not knowing anything better to do, I decided to run this app, (which "get info" describes as "Version 13.0.0.241").  I clicked on this application icon, and I think it was then that a FlashPlayer icon appeared in my dock.
I assumed that Version 13 would be rejected, not allowing me to see videos because it presumably doesn't have the required security update. But, the plan I originally suggested was that, if it failed with the typical black screen, I would (as originally planned) again try to install version 14, hoping that somehow passing Version 13 through the bowels of my computer would have cleansed it so that Version 14 would now install.
So, I was surprised that Version 13 actually allows me to see videos!! Whenever I click on a video I first briefly see the black screen with the message (I cannot remember what it says, but it is what you always see when it refuses to play a video, and says you are blocked).  Then, within a second or less, the black screen goes away and the video plays normally.  I have tried this on several videos, and so far I can always view the video just fine except for that very fleeting slap-in-the-face of the black screen.
This is obviously a "kludge" but it works for me now, so that I can function.  It may be helpful for others with the same or similar problems.  It may be significant that the "Get Info" function indicates that this version 13 I downloaded August 16th, was last modified on "Monday, August 4, 2014 5:59 PM", so perhaps it has recently been modified to include the security update???
It would be still better if there was a way I could successfully install version 14.  That is why I am not going to indicate that my original query has been successfully answered. I am hoping that the "real" experts (you know who you are) will either have a better answer, or tell me that my "kludge" shouldn't be used for some reason, or these experts will say that my kludge is OK and they don't have any way I can install Version 14.  In this last eventuality it will remain a mystery why Version 14 refuses to install on my Mini mac (as long as the Mac mini is using the OS 10.6.8 operating system, but installs OK if this Mac Mini is using OS 10.9.3).
Thanks to all of you.   Winston

  • Why can't Apple TV stream movies like the iTunes store can?

I'm in the UK with an Apple TV 2nd Gen. 9Mb/s broadband speed checked and have conclusively failed to rent one single movie since I bought this a year ago. Every time I log in, select the film, purchase it, hit play and all I get is "connection error please try later" Playing movie trailers and everything else is fine. Surely the point of renting a movie online is so you can watch it straight away. Lovefilm works just fine via my PS3.
The other day I tried again on Apple TV with the same error so figured I'd try and rent the movie direct from iTunes Store on my laptop, hey presto, 2 mins later I'm watching my film via my Macbook Pro hooked up to my TV.
So the big question is: Why can not Apple TV stream a movie like the iTunes Store can? Of course I appreciate that a certain amount of buffering has to happen but that is never evident on Apple TV.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Port
    Type
    Protocol
    Used By
    80
    TCP
    HTTP
    AirPlay
    443
    TCP

    UDP

  • Inconsistent iChat connectivity

I've recently set up iSight/iChat configurations on 3 family machines, and have had a very patchy experience getting the audio and video to work. Two configurations are Mac Mini/iSight/LCD TV; one is a MacBookPro. All three devices connect to the internet through one of two wireless routers (one Mini and the Pro in one house in Tucson, the other Mini at my parents in the UK).
iChat enables perfect video chat between the pro and each mini when on their respective LAN. However, connecting between the two minis, or between the pro and the remote mini is temperamental. Without changing any settings, we can get either fully functioning video and audio, or video without audio, or 'insufficient bandwidth' errors, or even 'failed to respond errors' between the same two machines at different times. Full function is less than 10% of the time (i.e., 3 times in about 40 attempts).
All machines are on 10.4.7, and have latest firmware as of Jul30. Internal firewalls are off. Wireless routers are residential gateways so should have no third party firewall. Speed tests are showing approx 7000 down/1000 up for the US connection, and 1200 down/250 up for the UK connection.
We have tried various of the fixes posted on this and other help boards, with varying success. The best success has been to delete preferences, reboot the entire machine, set Quicktime to lowest possible streaming (i.e., dial up speed) and hope for the best - though this still often gets an 'insufficient bandwidth' error or video without sound.
I have not yet tried isolating the router by going ethernet straight to the cable modems.
Anyone got any suggestions or similar stories? What is perplexing is that the function varies so much - it isn't a completely consistent failure, but nor does the problem seem to be truly resolved. My best guess is that there is a fluctuating bandwidth problem - either in iChat requiring more than it claims, or in one of our connections being weaker than the speed tests are showing.

    Thanks for the advice yesterday.
Today I tried with my father again, and viewed connection doctor throughout. The results were as follows:
    1) we could get audio to work first time, showing a bitrate ~25 - 35 KB/sec
    2) we got video working first time on two occasions, but with audio quality of 0%. As with yours and my conversation yesterday, my b/r fluctuated from occasional lows of ~90 up to 700, with about 70% of the time between 200 and 500. My fathers bitrate also fluctuated, but from as low as 35 up to about 250, and nearly half the time he was under 100. This I guess is the key to the problem. Though when we first initiated we had 400 and 180 respectively, and there was still no audio. At no time did audio quality go any higher than 0%.
Is there any reason audio should bail so easily and so completely? We're going to talk to our respective ISPs to see if they can explain and/or improve on the connection rate, and also try bypassing the wireless router leg to see if that helps.
I'll let you know how we fare...
    Thanks again,
    DT

  • Why are graphics garbled in PowerPoint?

I have a MBP retina, and ever since I've owned it, I've noticed an issue with the Presenter View in PowerPoint 2011.  Some of my graphics get garbled. This is specific to the Presenter view - with a 2nd monitor or projector hooked up, there is no issue.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?  Is it a hardware issue, or a software issue?  My graphics card is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB.
I have attached a screenshot showing an example.

  • HT4352 I have followed all the instructions on home sharing and it used to work perfectly.  With the new apple OS upgrade my apple TV now longer sees anything, even though I I applied all home sharing settings again.  Anyone know how to fix this?

I am trying to get home sharing to work on the applie tv and its not working after a Mac OS update.  It has not worked for about a month and use to work fine.  Has anyone else experienced this problem.  Is Apple working on a fix for the problem?  Is there a work around?
    Thanks,

  • Oracle 8i clients, inconsistent handling of tnsnames.ora (ORA-06401 gotcha)

This is more of a bug report / oddity declaration than a real problem, though it was a pain in the butt to nail down. I post it here for the benefit of anyone else who may run into it down the road.
Using the linux sqlplus client, I kept getting consistent failures connecting to one of a dozen db's, but tests with the (java) netasst client worked fine. After various debugging of other potential causes, it came down to strace'ing the sqlplus client, and noting that it was attempting to connect to the wrong host, despite what was specified on the command line.
What we identified as the most probable cause:
The routines that load and parse the tnsnames.ora file differ between the linux and java clients, with the java client being more tolerant/robust. The tnsnames.ora file I'd been supplied with had come from a fellow user's Win32 machine, and had been edited there, which probably included a couple ^M's or other non-visible characters within the file.
The solution (at least, what I did):
Load the tnsnames.ora file with netasst, and save it again with netasst. Netasst wrote the file in a manner that sqlplus could read accurately, and I got to go have a beer.

    Hi Fredrik,
You r right. But I have its entry in tnsnames.ora file. The entry looks like this -
    My_Service_Name.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Server = Computer_Name_of_Server_having_Ora8i)
    (Host = IP_Add_of_Server_having_Ora8i)
    (Port = 1521)
    (Pipe = ORAPIPE)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
The same entry exists in the tnsnames.ora file on the local PCs (same office where the Oracle 8i Server is present) at Site 1 and these PCs connect the server without any problem.
    Thanks
    Lokesh
