Consistent and very noticable tweeting noise

hey
there's a very noticeable/annoying tweeting noise coming from my mac mini (intel core solo/leopard). the only way to describe it is like a couple of mice/birds trapped inside.
it's been there a number of months. it starts after about half an hour of use although nothing seems to trigger it specifically. the mac mini is running really slowly in general.
i'm guessing its a hard drive problem rather than the fan.
since i cant afford to eat let alone buy a new computer. do i have any options ? is this a known problem ?
thanks
connor

Actually, it could be a fan problem.
Because if it is a fan problem, then the computer will overheat. Intel designed its chipsets to start shutting off cycles when the computer overheats. Basically a fail safe mechanism to keep it from burning up.
The fan could be broken, something in there isn't moving right, causing the tweeting. The fan could b spiining slow, Overheating the computer.
Download iCyclone, a free app, google search it. Monitor the temps when you are running the following app setups:
:Idle, nothing but the desktop (just the finder in the processes queue)
:Run the flurry screensaver for 5 minutes, then check the temp
:itunes
:itunes + safari
:itunes + safari + dashboard
:anything else graphic intensive up from there.
Your mini should never run above 100 degrees Celsius.
It will shut of usually at 110 degrees celsius.
Remember, these values are not in Fahrenheit. My mini will typically run up to 155 degrees F usually. Currently, with a few apps open, im running at 141.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
You can change the display in iCyclone from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
Let me know what you get.

Did my HD just crash and unrecoverable?  Time to replace my notebook?

I believe your hard drive has failed. Hope you have a backup.

  • My fan makes loud and very strange noises.

    Hi again,
My fan makes loud and very strange noises. Is there any cure for that?
    Thank you!
    Markus

Hmm... that is strange. There are a couple reasons that I can think of.
First, go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Processor Performance. See what its set to. If it is currently set to Highest, your fan could be going more often. Turn it down to Reduced or Automatic. Note if there is any difference.
Secondly, are you all up to date on software updates? The last step was to see if it was a software issue. If it isn't, then you probably have a defective fan. AppleCare?
Now, you would open your PowerBook. Look in the Apple docs (Support - Manuals) to find how to do it for yourself, or take it to a shop or Apple Store and have them do it. Safest option.
Look at your fan. Has it come free of the anchor and is hitting against the wall or fan surround?
Lastly, try keeping the PowerBook in a open, ventilated area. The fan will power up less if the computer stays cooler. For a possibly irritating but possibly helpful option, purchase a product that lifts the PowerBook off your lap or desk. I think Rain Design makes a good one.
    Good luck!

Good catch! Yes there was a time when many companies and other organizations did that sort of thing. Now not so much.
Intel still sponsors clubs see http://www.computerclubhouse.org.
You might also check around, there might be after school programs, sometimes the YMCA or Boys & Girls Clubs have programs.

I'm a new user and learning, I bought and installed Premiere Pro cs6.  I got a nice video clip but has a baby cried in the background and very annoying.  I have tried all of the sounds in Prem cs6 but didn't work. My question is, do I need to get a separate sound software download and install to be able to use it?

In the CS versions, there was some audio capability in PrPro but you needed to get a separate audio program for major work. Lessening a baby definitely qualifies as major work. That's lessening, i dont mean eliminating. Adobe's audio program is Audition. There are others "out there'. In the CC versions one just downloads Audution also.

So I recently updated to the latest Yosemite software (last night to be exact), and this morning i started to get a weird clicking and sort of grinding noise to the right of the mouse pad and extremely slow performance. • IMac abruptly shuts off and makes a clicking noise

I have posted a topic similar to this a good while back. Anyway, let me tell you about my problem. I have an iMac G3 Snow, 500MHz, 128 megs of RAM, and a 20 GB HD. I received this computer from a friend after he was fed up on trying to make it work and he gave it to me. This iMac has been acting very peculiar, because I have been able to turn this machine on and it will work for a few minutes, and then will loose all power. When this happens, the display goes out, the HD cannot be heard, and the power button will start flickering. (It is not in a sleep mode) Accompanied by this is a faint clicking noise that emits from the iMac and will just stay in that state. I have been fooling around with it for a while, and have noticed if I put the computer on it's side, or upside down, it will almost always power up and work correctly. I don't know what is doing it (maybe something is touching) but I am hoping you people might be able to help out.

I have been fooling around with it for a while, and have noticed if I put the >computer on it's side, or upside down, it will almost always power up and work >correctly.
Wow that's some good diagnostic technique. Good job.
The one thing that comes to mind is the flyback transformer. It's the big tall black thing on the computer's right side. I have seen them with bad soldering to the PAV board. If you take the bottom off (4 screws) you can see it through the hole that you can also adjust the screen voltage and focus. This thing puts out killer voltages so no messing with it with anything metallic or conductive. A 12" plastic ruler or plastic chopstick is good. Power the computer up and if you can make it fault by putting pressure on the flyback then it's probably the soldering on that part. Easy to do but hard to get that PAV out.
    eMail me for more info.

I received my week 16 MBP yesterday morning. It has been perfect thus far. Quite the improvment over my old iBook. I do hear some noises rarely but not enough to make me think there is a problem, I believe they are just the standard purrs and ticks of a high-powered computer. It doesn't run hot. I'd say cool to rather warm if used heavily. I hope I have a problem free experiance. I would hate for this product to tarnish Apple's reputation, that would be unacceptable considering this product is amazing. I will say this; I called Applecare, more out of curiousity than anything else and told them that I had just purchased an MBP and, while mine was fine, I had heard allot of disturbing reports about noise and heat. I asked point blank if Apple was aware of any issues and if they where working to resolve it. The answer I got was surprisingly forward. I was informed that they were "VERY" aware and working to correct the issues. He then told me I was lucky to recieve one of the quiet MBPs. I hope they work it out soon.

  • Ultrabook/Notebook freezing and making loud buzzing noise

I just received via UPS a HP Pavilion 11 x2 PC 11-h010nr for my daughter for Christmas.  I decided to let her open it as her one before Christmas present and I am glad I did.  She went into xbox music to listen to her new beats audio sound.  On about the 3rd song the loudest annoying buzzing noise came out of the screen portion and the screen was frozen (she had it detached from the keyboard).  She hit the power button and the noise stopped.  She got back into xbox music and about the 2nd song this time it did it again.  She started to cry and very upset because she thought it was broke and would take a very long time for us to get it fixed and she gets a replacement.  Needless to say her Christmas has just turned into a really bad Christmas.  Also today I brought the notebook with me to work to see if the problem continues and as I was putting the song on Pause/Play the noise occured, the screen did not freeze but the noise did occur.

  • My macbook pro is running very slow and very very hot

hi everyone I have a 13 inch mid 2012 MacBook pro,
it is running very very slow and extremely hot, I downloaded a program called smc fan control and it is reading the internal temperature of my computer as 80 degrees Celsius. I was looking on the forums and saw that I should run an apple hardware test. which I have done and it is coming up with Error 4/MOT/4/40000002: EXHAUST-2003
what does this mean? is it something to do with my fan?
also there is a very strange clicking noise when I lift the mac up or if its on its side and sometimes it just randomly freezes,  the computer does not respond and then it restarts.
    what do I do?
    please help!

" the fan didn't seem congested with dust, at least not enough to cause any malfunction."
The lint and crap builds up in the heat exchanger radiator. It's the grilled thing at the output of the fan.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Fan+Replacemen t/10367
Look at step 6. It's that grilled thing at the top of the fan. If you remove the fan that radiator is probably clogged with lint. Brush it all away and if possible blow out the fan with compressed air. Make sure the fan turns freely and doesn't feel stiff.

This isn't a MBP radiator but the problem will look like this.

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident.

  • Black&white picture and very slow working HP Truevision HD

    Hello!
Few days ago my webcam start working only in black&white and very slow - it's like slide-show.
Problem in any program (Skype, windows camera, youcam...).
I tried re-install drivers and even OS - nothing helps.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY dv7-7255dx Notebook PC and issues with the WebCam in black and White and slow moving. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that might need updating.
When you look in the device manager do you notice anything with a yellow mark on it?
Here is a document on how to troubleshoot the Webcam and the software. It shows you how to test the Webcam.

The back button does not work consistently, and rarely if ever when I open an attachment. Does anyone have a fix for this?
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often
    == I installed firefox

Same problem here: I never had a problem with the previous versions and now I don't even get my homepage when I click Firefox. Instead, I am getting a blank screen that says "New Tab", only after I click the "Home" symbol I get my Homepage (Yahoo). The browser - back and browser forward button don't work anymore, very annoying. Normally a newer version should be an improvement but it looks like Mozilla really messed up with this "improvement". probably I am going to use Google chrome from now on.
