Consistent jump from animated menu to a transition clip in DVD Studio 4

Hi there,
did anyone know a possibility how a consistent jump out to a short transition clip in DVD Studio Pro 4 could be made?
My problem is, that there is a animated video background clip running as loop in a menu. If the button to the next sub-menu is activated a short transition clip should be played. But to get a consistent and smooth transition between the menu an the clip, the jump out should be done when the video is at the loop point. Only there the end and the start frame of the following transition video are equal.
I have searched solutions and tried different scripts but did not figure out any one with the expected function...
Did anybody have solved a similar problem before, or is there maybe a simple solution for it?

Just to be shure...is there no way that when a user presses the button at any time, that I could trigger the jump to the next menu or clip to a fixed point (best the loop point) of that menu.(maybe by a GPRM used as counter)
A delay time between activating the button and the next action is the result and would be depending on the length of the animated menu. But that's OK if at the end a good transition will come up.

M2v files from compressor will not play in QT or DVD Studio Pro

I have 2 hours of HD footage that I am trying to put on a DVD. I tried exporting the entire thing (twice) to an mpeg2 but the resulting file would not open and froze quicktime. I then tried exporting the chapters individually. Even though I tried this twice, only the first clip worked. I then copied each chapter into a new sequence in FCP and exported each sequence to Compressor. This time, I could only open one of the 15 or so files in QT, but I could not even import that into DVD Studio Pro (it said it was an invalid file type). I have been using all the same settings, so I am not sure why chapter 1 works fine everywhere, chapter 2 works in QT but not DVD Studio Pro and the remaining chapters do not work anywhere. Anyone got any ideas as to what to do/try next?

I know that it will take a while, but after two tries exporting the whole thing and the result not working, I broke it up into smaller, 10 minute sections hoping that the computer would be able to handle them better and if one is bad, it is easier to fix than re-doing the entire thing.
The Compressor settings I am using: DVD Best Quality 150 minutes with all the default settings except that I put stream usage at HD DVD. I have also tried using Fastest Encode 150 minutes, also changing the stream usage.
I exported 20 minutes with Fastest Encode and changed the file format to 'H.264 for DVD Studio Pro' and it worked, but it is a mov file that is much bigger than the mpeg2 (m2v) file.
I started the compressor to work on the remaining hour at night and then left it until the next afternoon, but when I came back, it said there were 60+ hours remaining, but FCP was counting off the frames. I left it for another couple hours, hoping that compressor was simply estimating wrong, but when I came back, it said there were 93 hours remaining until it would be done. I canceled it and restarted the computer.

Slow jump from menu

I'm nearing the end of developing a DVD which has a main track with 23 chapters in it that are accessed using 55 different stories. All of that works well, with jumps between non consecutive chapters happening quite fast (testing on my Xbox and Samsung players). Going from the main menu to one of the stories is taking four or more seconds on the Samsung, and although it is near instant on the Xbox it does have a flash to black on the way (jumps between chapters in the main track don't blank out).
Is there a technique that might speed up the jump from the menu on the Samsung? Can anything be done about the blanking on the Xbox?
Incidentally, there is another video track that also has a jump into the main track, and that too is slow. I may combine that track with the main one in order to speed up that particular jump. Obviously I can't combine the main menu with the main track, but I wonder if I can combine the opening animation with the intro video and main track, and include all of those in the same VTS as the main menu? Would that improve things a lot?

Yeah, I thought it might be worth a try - in reality isn't that what DVDSP's doing under the hood anyway?
I recently made a quick compile DVD where instead of going into PS and making all my menus I thought I'd just throw it all together in DVDSP using the Make Button and Track feature (not something I'd normally do). After I'd made about 5 menus and 20 tracks I realised I also needed to create a play all function for each menu. As all the clips we're in separate tracks I decided it's script the jumps (Play All button > T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T5 > orig menu). As I was rushing I accidently assigned the scripts as prescripts to the tracks, rather than end jumps. When I burnt the disc and tested the play all button it jumped back to the same menu, looking exactly like a menu loop (due to using prescripts).
The point of this long story is from the play all button the disc ran 7 scripts across 5 separate tracks and returned to the menu with the same small flicker you expect from a menu loop - so I'd say its worth a try.

Exporting from Final Cut Pro for DVD Studio Pro

In the recent DVDs I've made, the quality seems lower than it has before. I don't think I've changed anything, but I was wondering what is the best format to export a clip from Final Cut Pro and the best way to encode those clips in DVD Studio Pro. Thanks for all your help!

The best and only format is mpeg2/m2v.
The encoding rate for video is based on the length of the sequence in h/m/s.
They should not be encoded in DVDSP, but exported as a self contained with current settings, no recompression and dropped into Compressor.
Based on length and the type of footage, elect a preset for video and elect Dolby 2 for audio

Layered Menu like Apple's DVD Studio Pro

I'm trying to find out if you can create layered menu's like you can in DVD Studio Pro? I don't want to use highlights or subpicture, but a rollover image created in Photoshop.

Yes, you can create layered menus.
I find doing it in Photoshop best.

Keynote transitions and jumping from slide to slide

There are times when I jump from one slide in a presentation to another slide out of sequence. When I do this the transitions go away. The slide just cuts to the slide I'm jumping to. Is there a way to get the transition to work when jumping and, if not, how do I request Apple to consider this for a future update? Thanks

I have requested a default dissolve transition (or a user-defineable default) for jumping and reversing slides. I don't know if Apple even reads the requests because the form still only goes up to version 5 when they ask what version of Keynote you have. I really wish Apple would take Keynote more seriously because every time I use it in a show, I convert more business people to want to use it but if Apple doesn't develop it into a more professional app they may lose a great opportunity to replace PowerPoint.

moving to the trash the com.apple.safari.plist preference file will reset Safari's preferences to the default values after you restart Safari. You can locate this file by going to the Finder - HD/Users/User Account/Library/Preferences folder.
Once Safari restarts, you can select your custom preferences, as well as add any address bar icons available i the View Menu>Customize Address Bar. Trashing the preference file ought to take care of your tab dilemma.

Navigate to point on Edge Timeline from a menu outside of edge

Is it possible to navigate to a point on the timeline from a menu that is outside of the edge animation?
I have a file set up that has about six screens on it. Each screen represents a different navigation tab. The actual file has left and right buttons that create a scroll effect either right to left, or in reverse. This works fine. Each transition is marked with a label, such as "Slide01", "Slide02" etc and I am using | sym.Play("Slide01") | to good effect.
What I need to do though is create a menu on a web page that takes a user straight to the correct point on the animation. For example, the second navigation option would take them to the second screen of the edge file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can replace .stop() with .play() depending on what you want the movie to do.
We're currently working on parsing a URL to the movie so that you can navigate to a specific part of the animatio when you land on it from another page. This may prove interesting for pre-loaders though.

I just want to use a picture as my DVD cover, and then insert a slideshow. Also, when I try to burn my 8.5gb double sided slideshow, all that burns is the music. It is a large slideshow, a memorial on the life of my now deceased brother. This means a lot to me and to my family, and I am having so much trouble trying to burn it. I have gone into Project View and selected appropriately. The bar shows I have room to burn this DVD, but it does not burn. I have burned so many DVDs in the past, but this one just will not burn. I am so confused at this point. I will say this is the first 8.5gb I have attempted to create and burn. My specs list a 7.7gb or 4.7gb as operable....but there are no 7.7gb dvds. I had to purchase 8.5gb. Help? What am I doing wrong? I have spent so much time on this, and just cannot figure it out.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor. The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow. It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them. You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version). Personal preferences showing here.

As you can see from your own email, this is far from simple
My wife and I totally depend on my Macbook Pro (1), my old Powerbook that my wife uses (2), our iPhones (3 & 4), our iPad (5), my Time Machine, and my MobileMe (6), including Backups to our iDisk on MobileMe to keep our lives running.
iCal's synced across 6 Apple platforms
Address Books synced across 6 Apple platforms
Email synced across 6 Apple platforms (me using Mail and wife using AOL)
Bookmarks synced across 6 Apple platforms
Various apple ID's synced across 6 Apple platforms
You get the picture
I would hate to mess this delicately balanced Apple computer ecosystem up at all.
iOS 10.7 requires that I upgrade a bunch of my key work apps and figure out a way to transfer a 10 year dependence on Quicken onto some other equally robust financial management platform that doesn't seem to exist. Just to add insult to potential injury.
I'm scared.
Wish this whole process could be 500% more automated.
We've been on Macs and other Apple devices since 1987. I can't keep track of all of my "Apple ID's" for this and that that you've asked me to set up for each device and for each service over the years. Everything's registered with you.

I do sympathize with your situation: you are among many for whom upgrading is impracticable, but who are dependent on MobileMe facilities which will be withdrawn next June.
As you say, you will need 10.7.2 to access iCloud on a Mac, and iOS5 for mobile devices.
I can't offer you any easy solutions, but this list may at least clarify the exact situation for you:
Your email, calendars, contacts and bookmarks, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery. will continue to work as before until next June.
You will be able to access email, calendar and contacts on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).

How to create multiple TYPES of objects from one menu?

Q: How can I create a single class to create objects of multiple 'object classes' in a way that is not a huge switch statement?
Explaination:
Let's say that I have an application that I am building, that manages five hundred object types. A properly-built object subclassing tree is created, and I want to be able to create objects of any 'leaf node' of this subclassing tree using a single 'objectCreate()' method in a 'factory object'. The purpos of this method will be to create an instance of the correct object, pass a handle to a few collections for properly sorting and storing these objects in groups.
Usually, one could create a switch in this function, testing for the type of object that the user wants to create from the menu. But in the case of having hundreds of possible object choices, this becomes harder and harder code to maintain (let alone performance).
Any suggestions?

The line:

I can't use a variable to replace 'xxxxxxxx' in run-time, but having a ton of choices in code sounds/looks unreasonable.

Do you see what I am trying to avoid? I am not experienced enough to instantly realize how to avoid the latter, and instead, do a single instantiation command for the correct constructor.

Background video in animated menu.

Have searched around the forums but can't find a definite answer to this.
I created an animated menu in After Effects with a background motion loop video.
Total length of 30 secs with button highlight appearing after 13 secs.
If I set the loop point in Encore for approx 14 secs the animated menu and button highlightetc all works ok
but the motion video in the background also stops at this point.
I assume this is probably correct but if not can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong?
Alternatively, if it is correct, are there any tricks which would allow the background video loop to continue for the full 30secs?

Did you use any of these? If not, take a peek to see if you did it right. (I'm wondering if your still menu is covering the motion in AE.)

How do I make track end jump go to menu and highlight next button.

I have a DVD with several programmes each with its own menu button, with track (button) one as the highlighted default. I would like the end jump of each programme to be back to the menu (easy) BUT with the button for the next track highlighted. How do I do that.

Click on the Track your want to jump from - then in the properties panel select "End Jump". A pop out menu will appear giving you the choice of where to go. Select the Menu you want and choose the Button you want to land on in the list.
