Consistent OS bug when ejecting disks (Mac OS 7.5.5 to 10.4.9)

I have a problem and a complaint about a bug in every Mac OS since 7.5.5, up to and including 10.4.9, and it is about disk images and ejecting disks. It has already happened to me twice tonight, and I hate rebooting my macintosh so frequently.
The problem has been both highly repeatable and extremely annoying because I have to reboot the computer every time it happens.
Its simple to repeat, just put a cdrom in the drive--I'm using an imac G4 USB with OS 10.4.9 at the moment but I've verified a similar problem occurs with floppy disks in various OS versions back to 7.5.5 on a Mac SE 30.
Next use Disk Utility to make a copy of the disk. I make a copy on the desktop and keep the same name as the original disk because I want to use them for archives. Now open the disk image to inspect its contents and make sure it looks right. Once the disk image opens on the Desktop it becomes impossible to eject the cdrom.
I've tried:
- the media eject key--graphic flashes but nothing happens
- dragging the icon to the trash can--icon disappears but the disk doesn't eject
- remounting the disk in Disk Utility and then using 1) the eject command, 2) the media eject key, 3) dragging the disk icon to the trash can.
Since I have an iMac G4 USB (the flat panel) the computer doesn't have a manual cdrom eject. The only way I've found to change cds is to reboot the computer and hold down the mouse button. Every single time I copy a disk I have to reboot--I hate that.
This bug is really overdue to be squashed. Until then, is there a way to force the cdrom to eject without either 1) damaging the drive or 2) rebooting the computer?
I don't want to damage the computer by forcing the cdrom drive open. Nor do I want to keep rebooting every time I make a disk image.
Thanks,
- Mike

Can you eject the disk after unmounting the .dmg file? Can you eject the disk if you change the .dmg's name slightly? BTW, my mate has a 17" 1GHz G4 iMac and her keyboard has an eject button.

  • USB3.0 enclosure won't spin down when ejected or when Mac sleeps

    Hi,
I just purchased two different USB3.0 2.5'' SATA enclosures to replace USB2.0 enclosures that I currently use.
In both cases, the drive I have inserted has refused to spin down when the drive was ejected, or when the Mac it was attached to went to sleep.  I have never had this issue with USB2.0, FireWire400, FireWire800 or eSATA drives attached to these Macs.
I've used the USB3.0 enclosures on two different Macs, one a Mac Pro, the other a MacBook Pro.  One runs Mountain Lion, the other Mavericks.  Both only have USB2.0 ports.*
Is this a noted bug with USB3.0 drives being used on USB2.0 ports?  I can't find any evidence that it is.
Comments on this would be welcomed, because otherwise I can see myself trawling through Amazon's range of USB3.0 enclosures until I find one that works properly - probably the most expensive
    * The Mac Pro will shortly have a PCIe USB3.0 card, hence the enclosures, but this won't help matters on my MBP.

Received the PCIe USB 3.0 card today and was able to test the enclosures with it.  In this case, the drive still fails to spin down when ejected.  So, it's not a USB 2.0/3.0 incompatibility.  The manufacturer advised a firmware update on the enclosure, but this didn't fix the issue.
The enclosure did spin down when the USB 3.0-equipped Mac slept, but when I woke the Mac it re-mounted a previously unmounted volume on the device, so I suspect this was more a case of the PCIe card simply entirely losing connection with the drive on sleep, and re-recognising if on wake.  This tallies with information I've read regarding the odd and unpredictable performance of USB 3.0 on older Macs.

Well, if the internal hard drive  is no longer readable, there's pretty much nothing anyone here can do about it. There are no magic words that will fix a hardware problem.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and have it looked at.

    Complements of Kappy:
    Try:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

    What can I do?

The good thing about mac-centric resellers such as OWC, is they have people on staff that can answer questions without you buying things first. They also have how-to information, and instructions are included in many of their products. I saw a link to watch a DIY video in one of their pages; an example of a RAID (with its own power supply) is shown on their drives page. Also a few in there, with no power supplies, for less money.
If I were looking to backup and perhaps also have a partition for a system clone, I'd consider something like one of these: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Some ideas on the RAID backup methods appear in google search, some of the pages are ideas and concepts; and the better ones also warn about using RAID for the only backup plan.
Oh, OWC has live chat. Haven't tried it, nor have I bought anything from them. I have what appears to be two products from them, but have not used either. One is in a box as-new, but has only USB2.0 ports & my Macs needed FW400/800. It has been said their RAM is a good way to upgrade, too. But I can't confirm!
A 'RAID-ready' unit for backup may be more versatile for just that, but I have not checked into these details. I use single HDDs in powered enclosures, and usually manually make backup clones to FW drives, of bootable OS X systems. Some of the OWC raid-ready use eSATA ports so that may not be viable for a computer without them.
The unused in-box external drive I have is like the base model in the link above. However mine is USB2.0 (maybe) and won't boot my older Macs due to hardware variance; and my preference would be for FireWire options, these models do offer that. But the one I have does not. Dual 500GB HDDs, and they could be used in tandem as a RAID. That would be a choice set up in software. I'm not sure and not interested enough to read up just now.
    My backup method is not automatic, or a moving backup plan, if I don't get a move-on and make full system clones. I do make copies of photos and documents the manual way, to USB external drives; and occasionally backup to DVD or CD media. And USB flash, that helps to move files between computers without need to use file sharing via wi-fi. {Like Why fly? Walking is better exercise unless one is a bird. Squawk!}
    https://www.google.com/#q=raid+backup+mac
Depending on the ports in your Mac, you may be able to use other cables to attach between a backup or externally enclosed hard disk drive with multiple partition and bootable clone in one of them. Not sure about the Thunderbolt, and where that is the main port, adapters are required to access other devices, as allowed.
Anyway, I am going on and on, yet not really saying anything.
My ideas would not be all that interesting to follow as a backup
plan when matching available newer hardware to task, but you
can get some into better ideas if you are not in a rush. Get a
good setup and then look into more an betterer stuff.
    Good luck & happy computing!

I was loading some CDs into my iTunes library when the disk drive refused to "suck in" the next CD.  Does anyone have a suggest on how I might proceed?

Yes, that is a Catch 22.  If you have another Mac you can connect your Mac to it in the Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire, and use Disk Utility on the second Mac to try to run the Hardware Test from there.  Not sure if it's possible to a connected Mac though.
You can try this several times in the Terminal app and then see if a disk can be fully inserted:
Enter the following command followed by the Enter or Return key:
    drutil eject
Do it several times and then try another disk.  (A long shot).

  • Loud electronic screeching noise when ejecting CD

I was copying CDs to iTunes using the "Import Songs and Eject" feature (iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Importing, set "On CD insert" to "Import Songs and Eject"). When ejecting the drive occasionally makes a loud electronic screeching noise. Is there something wrong with my drive or is this normal?
    Thanks in advance,

Are you sure it is electronic? I looked at my MBP and it seems like the flaps they have covering the drive are just a little too long and rigid and make a screeching sound when ejecting a disc.
I would pop in a disk, without using iTunes, and then eject it and listen to if the noise is coming from the flap on the drive or somewhere else.

  • FCP keyboard won't eject disk

    Hi all,
At work, we have an older FCP editing keyboard, I'm guessing from before the days of having a keyboard key to open/close the disk drive. It is, instead the power button. However, we have a G5, which means we have no idea how to open our disk drive (I just arrived here, and have no idea how the previous people did it).
Does anyone know another way to open the drive? Command E only works when there's a disk in there, I think.
Thanks very much for helping with such a silly problem,
    Craig

Here's some other options that I've found other than the ones mentioned (and yes, F12 works):
    Ardiem
Hold down the mouse button (the left button for those of you with multi-button mice) while restarting the computer until the drive ejects.
If you have Toast, launch it then use the eject command (command-e).
Open Disk Utility, click on your optical drive, click the eject icon.
Restart your machine with the Option, Command, O, and F keys held down, and type the following into the prompt:
    eject cd
    mac-boot
Add an Eject menu to the Finder menu bar. The menu extras are located in your System\Library\CoreServices\Menu Extras folder. By double clicking on Eject.menu, an eject menu should appear in the Finder menu bar with an option to open the drive.
Sometimes people get too used to using F12 for Dashboard on other systems that already have an eject key so I've listed these alternatives for those that are interested.

On a PowerPC-based Macintosh (but not an Intel-based Macintosh), you may use Open Firmware to eject a CD or DVD disc when normal methods for ejecting it have not succeeded.
Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold the key combination Command-Option-o-f. Enter commands:

Is this a hint that I need a new disk drive, and if so, where is the best place to get one with a small budget?

  • Eject disk on sleep

Is there a way to eject disks on sleep; or more exactly ensure I don't get the "Disk not ejcted properly" message whem my iMac sleeps?

Think what you will, OS X never ejected a disk upon sleep. However, USB drives lose power on sleep because OS X puts the ports to sleep to save power.
Nevertheless, you asked if there was a way to eject the disk automatically when you put the computer to sleep. There is no solution within OS X.

Deauthorizing the computer will only cause you to have to enter a password to play iTunes Store purchases on that computer. It doesn't have anything to do with media thats synced to the iPod, other than the account user name is synced too.
Check this Apple document out -> Using iPad or iPod with multiple computers
If you want to delete the music library on your device and make the new computer its "home" computer, choose Erase and Sync. iTunes will delete all songs and playlists on your device, and then will copy the music library and playlists from the new home computer to your device.
If you want to move the iTunes Store purchases on your device to the new computer, choose "Transfer Purchases." The new computer must be set up with your iTunes Store account and authorized to play your iTunes Store purchases in order to transfer your iTunes Store purchases.
    Notes:
Synchronization generally occurs only in one direction, from your computer to your device. However, if you are legally allowed to transfer song files, you can use your iPod as a hard disk3. An exception is the transfer purchases feature, which allows you to restore purchased iTunes content to an authorized computer from your device.

  • Cannot eject disk from bootcamp set up

Just setting up the bootcamp with Windows XP disk, all the installment is done but when you get to the end and windows says 'restarting in 13 sec's, please eject disk we cannot eject and it then states in a black background - disk error, press any key to re-start - nothing working when we do this. Have tuned on and off with same response - disk error, Think if we can just eject the disk it will be ok, using a wireless keyboard (but did not install keyboard software) thanks

You cannot eject the disk from the Mac during the install process. You only have access to the eject key after the Windows install is complete and after you install the Bootcamp Windows drivers from your Mac OS X disk. That is why you need to use a full version instead of an upgrade version per Apple's Bootcamp documentation. If you have a full, supported version of Windows you should be able to complete the install and reboot. Then you can boot into Mac OS X (holding the alt key after the ding and the white screen appears on the computer), eject the Windows install disk and insert the Mac OS X disk, then boor Windows and install the Bootcamp tools.
It sounds like your wireless keyboard is the problem here. You probably need a wired USB keyboard to do the Windows install. A USB keyboard (or the build-in notebook keyboard) will work for the install process (typing in the codes and what not).

  • Hard Disk - Mac OS Boot Volume failure

    Hello everyone,
    My Mac does not boot.
I started having odd problems of clicking on a document and the mac refusing to open its application (tried with PDF, DOCX, even JPG).
When I rebooted I was  greeted with a a normal grey screen with apple logo and immediately received a  terminal system message:
    The message read:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8010bcb7d4): "Process 1 exec of /sbin/launched failed, errno 8"@/SourceCache xnu xnu-2422.1.72/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3836
    Debugger called: <panic>
Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Adrress
    etc. (please see above image)
After quickly listing these messages it rebooted. Again same thing.
Now this is odd since to my knowledge nothing particular happened that could justify this behaviour - regular apps being used, mac at the desk, no pwer failluers or surges... I even got a brand new disk I installed back in October last year.
I rebooted with option pressed and got the three volumes I expected: Mac OS X, Bootcamp and HD Recovery
Retried Mac OS X (you never know ;-) and nothing changed, same panic screen.
I then rebooted on HD Recovery and run repair on Disk Utility. The S.M.A.R.T status is "Verified" and so I tried to Repair the volume. Can't remember exactly the message but basically something in the lines of "The disk cannot be repaired, backup your data and format it".
The disk change prevented me of having a proper backup (last one done before changing disks - and as you probably will know when changing disks Timemachine does not recognize and proposes reset the backup it has from previous disk).
So I thing I will get the disk out and connect it externally to another mac and backup and format it to later restore.
But wait, how about Bootcamp? I rebooted, pressed option and chose Bootcamp as startup disk and... amazingly it works without a problem (besides seeing Windows 7 on a mac which is still a troublesome image to me  ;-) So not all is lost!
So my question: any ideas if I may repair the disk from the apparently fully functional Windows? I started backing up the more recent and important files, but already had troubles with file long names and naming rules (so I will definitely have to backup it later on a Mac OS X environment as external disk).
Any thoughts will be most welcome.
    Regards,

    You were right BobRz! :-)
On second thought and still thinking that the drive could be a more likely culprit I decided to take the Mac back to the store where I had bought and installed it so I could profit from the warranty.
They run a quick test (could not figure out which sequence keys but it was something built-in into the OS or Firmware) and they told me the disk was probably not at fault and that I should leave my Mac (chills!) for a more thorough testing.
Although I already had saved all data files not covered by my existing TImemachine backup, I negotiated with them they would do the eventual full backup just in case testing pointed the finger to the disk and left it to - hopefully  - come back next day with everything sorted out.
The following day they phoned me and when I presented myself at the counter I had my mac wating for me (I think I saw it smile - I certainly was) alongside with a faulty disk cable which has been replaced! So there you have it, you were 100% on target! :-)
All in all I had a 100€ repair and cable to pay for.
So all is well that ends well!
Thank you very much for your insight Bob.
    Best regards,
