Console CDE scree freeze!

hi,
I'm running Solaris 8 on an intel box.
Sometime in the mid of unzipping a package using gunzip my CDE screen will freeze at the console. I would like to be able to telnet in to kill the stalled CDE session. Which daemon should I kill in order for me to restore my console CDE screen back to its logon screen state? Thanks for your help!

try using /etc/rc2.d/S99dtlogin reset or stop/start option to restart dtlogin daemon or
try killing /usr/openwin/bin/xterm if you are in telnet or
try killing /ust/dt/bin/dtsession

  • Console (X-Fi) freezes EVERY time I click on EQ button (All 3 modes) -- HE

    Hi,
    I have the X-Fi Elite Pro and just recently developed this problem... my console freezes EVERY time I click on EQ button... I mean I have to hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and kill it with task manager. This happens in all three modes. After I kill the process,?I can re-open the console and use it as normal -- As long as I NEVER CLICK on the EQ button... This happens regardless of the mode I am in. If I wait long enough, I will get an error message that says "Out of memory". The title of that error window varies... I wrote down a couple of them... once?the title?said?"modeEnTM" and last time it was "CTTheme."?Anyone else ever have this problem.. again... it just cropped up all of a sudden -- but it won't go away. I did uninstall all Creative software and drivers, deleted all Creative folders, deleted the registry entries?and reinstalled everything... but no change. Hope someone knows... -- ScribbleMeat

    Perhaps you have something else which you installed that is conflicting with the Creative software. Try using Sysinternals autoruns or msconfig to disable all unnecassary start-up items and then see if EQ button still causes any crashes. Do you see any CPU usage spikes on any other processes whilst the Out of memory crash appears?Have you checked to see if your Virtual memory is set correctly? you can check this in Control Panel, System Properties > Advanced Tab > Performance SettingsMake sure you have a paging file set to a custom size of around 2046 or leave it on System managed size. You might want to also try out a program called CCleaner, this can clean up your temp files and registry without damaging your OS or program installations. If none of this helps, try uninstalling the complete driver set again and then using Driver Cleaner to make sure there is no trace left afterwards or go through the hard disk manually (Program Files, Documents and Settings) and remove all trace of Creative related software and configuration files.

  • Macbook Pro A1226 Keeps Freezing

    Hello and best wishes for the new year,
    My macbook freezes at different intervals but most of the time while it boots up or shorthly after; once in a while it will freeze after a longer period of time.
    When it freezes I have to restart it a bunch of times, when it freezes on each occasion before I can eventually get some work done for a subtential period of time.
    I had the same problem about 3 months ago where eventually it was impossible to boot and I send it to an online repair service that replaced the logic board with a new used one.
    All along the hard drive could be access in T mode so I think it is good.
    It worked for a while but now it is starting to act up again in the same manner.
    From my research it seems like it could be the GPU, graphic card or maybe some weird kernel panics.
    I am attaching 2 logs from the console between 2 freezes and the Etrecheck.
    Should I attempt to repair and if yes how or is this machine done?
    Thank you.

    I have done both of those, and even taken the computer in for a repair and the problem still hasn't been resolved. Any ideas? The apple store did a full system erase and reinstalled the software, and I'm still having freezing problems. After playing around on programs more, I have noticed that when I'm only using safari or itunes it's rarer for my computer to freeze (it still happens, just not as often). I have recently noticed that connecting my mac to my tv using a HDMI cord often causes instant freezes, and while I didn't think so before, it does seem that Sims 3 and Logic cause almost constant freezing too. Is it possible that this could be a graphics card issue or something like that? It seems weird to me that a computer with such high specs can still freeze playing a Sims 3 game or having a few safari tabs open while playing a song on itunes. I'm at a loss since I've now sent it in for two repairs and still haven't resolved the issue.

  • Freezing/crash of iMac under Snow Leopard when backup with Time Machine

    Hi!
    The backup on my external hard drive with Time Machine cannot be completed.
    After few ten Go out of 360Go the backup stops suddenly and the computer freezes/crashes.
    I have got an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 − 64 bit. The external hard drive is a LaCie 500Go.
    Also, backups for another Apple computer can be done with this LaCie external drive. So, it is not the cause of the freezing/crash of the iMac.
    I tried to solve this problem applying the following steps:
    1- I started with the installation disk.
    2- I repaired the internal iMac drive and the permissions with the Disk Utilities soft on the installation disk. All was OK.
    3- The LaCie drive was erased, formatted again with one GUID partition (500Go) and the disk verified. All was OK.
    4- I re-install the OS with the installation disk -> 10.6 Snow Leopard
    5- Updates to 10.6.8, etc… security update 2012-004 and the 13th Java update to v1.6.
    6- I deleted in the folder /Library/Preferences the file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    7- I deleted the file com.apple.finder.plist in the administrator account Preferences folder.
    8- The iMac was shutdowned as well as the external LaCie drive.
    9- I restarted and changed the name of the external LaCie drive.
    10- I choose the LaCie backup drive with Preferences System > Time Machine with right exclusions.
    Unfortunately, the problem remained and the backup was again unsuccessful followed by another freezing/crash of the iMac.
    So how to solve this problem?
    Here is what I obtained from the system.log with the Console utility (crash/freezing at: 10:48):

    You know, i just logged in trying to find out the same thing. My iMac is a 2 Ghz 17" Rev. B and it just froze in Safari. The beachball showed up but i could still mess with other programs. When this happens the fans start getting realllllly loud and they just get louder and louder until i do a forced restart. They seem to just kick in sometimes and get really loud when i am doing mundane things like checking webpages, and if i can close the program, they stop. I'm wondering if this is a defect or this is something that is normal. I know that the logic boards would go bad on the Rev. A's, but they supposedly fixed the problem for the newer batches. Anybody have an idea?

  • IPhoto 11 freeze when import from SD on MacBookPro1,2

    Hello there,
    I installed a brand new hard drive on my MacBookPro1,2 (17", Core Duo 2,16 , 2Go) with a fresh Snow Leopard install + iLife 11 Fully updated (10.6.8 + 9.1.5) , but I can't import any pictures directly from any SD card coming out of my cameras or VCR.
    When I insert a SD card in my card-reader, it is well mounted and I can browse it or copy anything from/to it.
    Then iPhoto shows up and detects the card, Import scren feature shows up but instead of showing the thumbnails, it shows a spinning wheel and the mouse cursor is spinning too.
    To be able to use iPhoto (that is not responding), I have to force to quit it and restart my computer.
    I tried many things that didn't make the Import screen feature work when I plug a SD Card :
    - Rebuilding the library using iPhoto (Command and Option)
    - Rebuilding the library using iPhoto Manager
    - Using a new Library
    - Using Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature
    - Using BatChmod
    - Reinstalling iLife 11
    - Reinstalling the whole computer
    - Formating cards with Disk Utility (using FAT16 and FAT32)
    - Formating cards with cameras
    - Trying many cards (2Go, 4Go, 32Go) (Kingston, Transcend)
    Things that worked :
    - Import screen feature with my iPhone4
    - Import menu "Folder / Import"
    I tried using my library on my other Mac, Import screen feature worked perfectly.
    So, I reinstalled this hard drive with the same Snow Leopard in my a MacBookPro5,1 (15", Core 2 Duo 2,4, 4Go).
    Using my old photo library or an new one, the import screen feature has been working without any problem.
    Then I putted back the hard drive on my MacBookPro1,2, ... the import screen feature didn't work....
    It looks like a USB Driver problem, but I can read/write from the card.
    There isn't any message in the Console when iPhoto freezes and is "Not responding...".
    Is someone else having this issue ?
    Thank you for paying attention.
    Teiho

    Looks like https://discussions.apple.com/message/12566520 but formating cards didn't help.

  • Unable to open console on display :0

    Hi,
    i have a ultra 5; i replaced one of the seagate barracuda hdd of 9.1 GB with a WD 80GB ... So, now i have 2 hdds: 1 x barracuda 9.1GB and 1 x wd 80GB ... on the same ide cable (Cable Select) while on the secondary ide i have the cdrom - master ...
    Then, i successfuly installed solaris 10 (build 63) ...
    Everything looks ok, the only exception is that i cannot open the console (cde) ...
    If i check /var/dt/Xerrors:
    Thu Dec 9 22:27:59 2004
    error (pid 325): Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly 0
    Thu Dec 9 22:28:01 2004
    error (pid 325): Server for display :0 can't be started.
    Couldn't open display connection
    Nothing else ...
    If you have a workaround/possible fix , please advise ...
    Thank you for your time and help, catalin ciontu .

    Personally I'm not very fond of the use of CableSelect, but who am I ! If it works than leave it like that.
    Most likely the video issue you have is due to a general video driver issue for build 63.
    Your best bet is to go up to build 72.

  • Constant Freeze/Hang associated with UPD connection attempt

    As suggested in another post, I have been monitoring the system logs with Console and the freezes/hangs and beach balls perfectly coincide with numerous (>15/per occurrence) of the following message:
    9/7/09 6:21:33 PM Firewall54 Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP 10.0.1.6:59119 from 10.0.1.1:53
    Any thoughts?
    Previous Background:
    I am experiencing nearly constant freezing/beach balls. I can barely type this as it hangs up every 30 seconds or so. It happens in all applications and the finder. The issue started a few months back (with an update I suspect), and I have since installed SL with negative results.
    I have repaired permissions and the disk from the SL install disk and checked the hardware with the original system disks: all with no problems reported. Activity Monitor shows 27 GB free space on the HD, more than half the memory available and minimal CPU activity. Also, reset the PRAM again with no improvement.
    Not sure where to head from here, aside from installing SL from a clean disk...

    A quick update to my issue: after more than 7 phone calls to Apple Tech Support, (who were more than helpful!) it took the macbook into the local repair shop. Turns out while the HDD did not fail any diagnostic test, replacing the HDD cured all issues.
    Thanks again to those that offered assistance; and after all that I got an upgraded HDD 120 GB to 320 GB... could have been worse!

    Ok I have found my problem :
    On every web pages, we have defined some inactivity timeouts.
    On my own server I have disabled these timeouts but not on the distant timeout.
    And it seems that the timeout (defined in javascript ont he web pages : 3s) has a very bad influence on the launching of my applet ... only with firefox (with IE and Opera no problem)
    My problem is anwsered but the problem keep alive for firefox ...

  • Kernel Panics - 2013 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display

    Hi everyone,
    I've been experiencing some system freezes lately, and upon investigating the console logs, each freeze seems to correspond to a kernel panic, which is listed as such:
    1/20/14 9:25:19.000 PM kernel[0]: BootCache: too many history clusters (150, limit 151)
    I'm running the computer with all original components (stock RAM, etc.), and the only externally-connected peripheral is an Apple Thunderbolt Display, which is connected by both Thunderbolt and MagSafe port.
    I've done a bit of Googling to see if this was a widespread/known issue, but didn't find anything conclusive, expect for a few similar reports, but very little follow-up information or detail.
    I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this problem, or if there's someone out there with a bit of hardware expertise who could share some insight.
    Thanks!
    Andrew
    Here are some console log screenshots:

    Thanks, Kappy. Here is everythign from the /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports directory from today:

  • Using JavaCompiler Class for Debugging Info Only

    Hello everyone,
    Before I get started into the problem, I'll tell you what it is I'd like to do. I'm building an educational applet that'll allow students learning Java programming to write code on a Web page. My goal is to simulate a compiler environment without having it actually compile code (i.e. I want to tell them if there are any syntactic errors in their code). I've searched around the Web quite a bit for how to do this, and I thought I had something by using the JavaCompiler class. It works perfectly in a command-line version I've developed, but in the applet, when I invoke the compiler, the applet freezes. I've isolated it to the compiler call itself. Here is the init method (yes, I know it's a better idea to do the hard work and GUI building in a separate class; but right now, I'm just checking if it all works).
    @Override
    public void init()
    output = new JTextArea(5, 30);
    this.getContentPane().add(output);
    PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(new TextAreaWriter(output));
    out.print("Hello!");
    JavaCompiler compiler = ToolProvider.getSystemJavaCompiler();
    String program = "class Test{" + " public static void main (String [] args){"
    + " System.out.printl (\"Hello, World\");"
    + " System.out.println (args.length);" + " }" + "}";
    Iterable<? extends JavaFileObject> fileObjects;
    fileObjects = getJavaSourceFromString(program);
    compiler.getTask(null, null, null, getOptions(), null, fileObjects).call();
    If I exclude the bold line of code, the applet runs. Otherwise it hangs and does nothing. I imagine this has something to do with the execution environment, permissions, etc. If you'd like to see more of the code I'm using, let me know.
    My questions are these: is there an easier way to go about this? Is there a way to invoke the compiler to get its output only, WITHOUT directly compiling a class? Is there a Magic Library designed for this that I've somehow overlooked? I know JDB only works on already-compiled class files; there's a tool called Checkstyle that seems to be more for formatting and subtle issues of style (hence, the name) than actual error checking (not to mention, it requires compiled code as well).
    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, all. :) Let me know if you need more info.

    >
    I checked the console after the freeze; it's handing me a NullPointerException for that line, which would be understandable except all of the arguments to call() can deal with null values. ( http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/javax/tools/JavaCompiler.html )
    From the javadoc for ToolProvider.getSystemJavaCompiler():
        Returns:
            the compiler provided with this platform or null if no compiler is providedSo it's definitely possible that compiler.getTask(null, null, null, getOptions(), null, fileObjects) returns null.
    Indeed that's what I would expect from a browser's JVM (which includes only a JRE, and not a JDK).

    Ah, ah, I missed your latest edit while I was reading the API Javadoc :o)
    Glad you found out!

    Actually, if you look closely, you'll see that they're neither crashes (.crash) nor hangs (.hang).
    Here's what's reported in Console.app:
    1/3/2013 11:01:30.601 AM mdworker[12719]: Unable to talk to lsboxd
    1/3/2013 11:01:30.946 AM sandboxd[12721]: ([12719]) mdworker(12719) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd
    The second line has an "attachment" icon which you can click to get the full report, which is saved in an auxiliary document at:
    /private/var/log/asl/AUX.2013.01.03/796282
    Here's the contents (minus the backtrace information) of that asl (Apple System Log) auxiliary document:
    mdworker(12719) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd
    Process:         mdworker [12719]
    Path:        /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/Metadata.framework /Versions/A/Support/mdworker
    Load Address:    0x10817a000
    Identifier:      mdworker
    Version:         ??? (???)
    Code Type:       x86_64 (Native)
    Parent Process:  launchd [340]
    Date/Time:       2013-01-03 11:01:30.905 -0500
    OS Version:      Mac OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    Report Version:  8
    Compare that with a crash log (.crash) which specifies a Crashed Thread number as well as the Exception Type and Exception Codes:
    Process:         AppleScript Editor [88791]
    Path:            /Applications/Utilities/AppleScript Editor.app/Contents/MacOS/AppleScript Editor
    Identifier:      com.apple.ScriptEditor2
    Version:         2.5 (138)
    Build Info:      ScriptEditorX-138000000000000~5
    Code Type:       X86-64 (Native)
    Parent Process:  launchd [344]
    User ID:         501
    Date/Time:       2013-01-01 06:05:30.986 -0500
    OS Version:      Mac OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    Report Version:  10
    Crashed Thread:  8
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0xfffffffffffffff8
    So, it's not a crash, but just a report of a sandboxing violation. It is likely the backtrace information that makes it look so similar to a crash, but the backtrace information serves the same purpose in both cases: to provide the contextual information about what lead up to the event being reported. (In the case of a crash log, there will be one Thread that is listed as Crashed).
    Anyway, if it isn't already obvious, I'm experiencing the same logging to Console about this issue, and a Google search led me here.
    From what I've gathered, you can apparently fix the issue by restarting in Safe Mode, then restarting normally. That appears to delete some cache files inside the "secure" temporary items and caches folders, which are located in /private/var/folders/, that are somehow responsible for this issue.
    Unfortuanately, I don't think I can start up in Safe Mode, since I don't have a recovery partion, because my Mountain Lion installation is spread across 2 volumes in a RAID 0 setup.
    I'm still in the process of researching this, and need to reboot now to try creating an external flash drive with a ML installation + Recovery Partition.

  • Satellite Pro L100: Ghosting with Symantec Ghost Suite 1.0

    Hi all,
    Have brought 50 pro L100's hoping to able to just set one of them up then ghost the image to the other's.
    I can't get Ghost to work at all, the boot disk binds to the Nic no problems, but when it starts to load the dos based ghost console it just freezes and won't go any further.
    have tried the -FNI switch, 3Com bootservices, PC Dos, and various versions of MS DOS, am quite stumped to why it's not working.
    Have got 15 Pro A20's and had no problems ghosting them, it's strange, is there something I've missed??
    Thanks
    Jay

    I had exactly the same problem not so long ago. I managed to get to the bottom of it after much much frustration!!!
    The L100 uses SATA, ghost doesn't understand all SATA drives and needs a little help to know where the drive is and how it works. So, when you launch ghost you need to launch GHOST.EXE -NOIDE
    This will definetly work, you owe me big time!

  • NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! ....??

    iMac, Strange behavior and eventual freeze of the screen!
    While using software like google-earth, aperture 2 or sometimes even while just browsing the net with safari 3.1, or changing of the space (leopard spaces) strange behavior with the graphics starts: slowniness showing the dock, intermittent unresponsiveness, frezzing of the screen for various seconds, strange lines or pixelation on the screen, and eventually, spinning pizza and complete freeze, forcing me to restart the machine with the power button. (the mouse pointer moves but anything else is absolut un-responsive)
    This happens to me several times a day, while different kind of tasks, its very annoying feeling nervous not knowing when the screen will freeze again.
    If i got the chance to see the console before the freeze i can see a lot of lines containing:

    I have tried resseting PRAM, disconect all usb-firewire periphs.. repair permissions, etc.. nothing seems to help...
    I also reinstalled completely leopard, and all my aplications, it took a complete day, with all software updates, leopard graphics update, security updates, etc, etc... and 15 minutes after that it froze again.
    Has anybody experience something similar or may it be a problem with my graphic card?
    Imac 24"
    2.16. Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2Gb RAM
    (NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT)
    OS X 10.5.2

    Sorry, hit the hotkey by accident and posted without finishing.
    Try updates again. They go quick and can not harm the system.
    Now, let's skip to the Logitech mouse. Are you aware of the threads in this forum regarding that scenario? The logitech drivers at Leopard's release were incompatible with 10.5. They may have subsequently released new drivers or updates. Apparently, jumpy mouse behavior was a problem with the old drivers BEFORE the graphic updates and 10.5.2 updates were posted. Perhaps the problems exhibit themselves differently with these updates. Worth checking. If there are no new drivers for your mouse you can check out Steermouse or USBOverdrive. Google those.
    Your epson drivers are out of date if they say PPC. Install the Intel versions.
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid= 88043&infoType=Downloads
    This link may do the trick.
    When I say make all updates, I mean you should go to Apples "support" and then "download" site and manually browse every applicable update for your machine going back to October 27, 2007. You will be surprised that some of the updates may not have been installed or packaged or delivered....I have personal experience with a friend on this one. The system would tell him if the update was already performed or not required, etc....therefore no harm no foul.
    To recap: Manually download and install every applicable update from Leopard's release.
    Install the new scanner and mouse drivers. Avoid PPC processes in backround.
    Then check out this:

    and check the second link about installation without CD

  • Trouble booting CentOS after installing 10g XE

    After tackled with XE on Window XP and 10g DS, I moved on to Linux. I installed CentOS 4.2, and everything seemed to work fine. Then I installed 10g XE with Start XE when CentOS boots up. Everything seemed to be fine, and I was able to login through the XE home page as system. Then I turned off the computer and went to sleep. Next day when I started the computer, my CentOS wouldn't boot. It stopped after:
    Checking SWAP Spaces [OK]
    The cursor was blinking...forever! The sad thing was I had to switched the power off to stop everything. I am a newbie to Linux. Did I miss something? Somebody help please?!

    This doesn't really mean there is a problem with the swap space. When linux startup process hangs at enabling swap space means next step (database startup) is hanging. It is just about to open the graphical console, but it freezes at this point because it is not able to startup oracle.
    When installing, did you perform the execution of '/etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure' as the root user to configure the database?
    You can still enter into your linux environment, as by now the networking settings are already active. So open a session by means of ssh or telnet if available and verify this startup phase. Just as a workaround, look for the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe file that was created by the XE installation. Rename it and set just an empty file instead, so you are able to open your console. Once fixed, rename it back to its original name.
    In case of boot problems, use your rescue disk, mount your root file system and perform the outlined steps.
