Console color overwriting sometimes

I've got a function that I wrote that is part of a larger script.  The issue I'm having doesn't seem specific to this function, but it's an example of what I'm seeing in general.  I'm doing this through the ISE if that matters.
About half the time when I run the script some of the colors get overwritten during the display where sometimes the line being written to the screen will have part of the color from the previous line in it, and not always just at the beginning.
Example output
Program Name | Installed   | Latest
Program 1      | 8.4.5.196   | 8.4.5.196
The "Program Name" line is in white which is the way it should be. On he second line the word "Program" is in green like it should be, but the number "1" through "| 8.4.5.196   | 8.4"
is white and ".5.196" is back to green again like it should have been.
I'm assuming it has something to do with multithreading, but I'm not completely sure.  I've tried inserting Start-Sleep -m 100 in parts of the script and it does help a bit but does not completely eliminate it and I'd like to not have to slow the
script down to fix it if there's another way around it.
Is there something I'm missing maybe?  I'm self learning PS after previous experience with batch files, and C#.
Thanks

$Current = $Current.PadRight(12,' ')

else
write-host "$ProgName|`t$result|`t$Current" -foregroundcolor "green"
} # End
else

write-host "Program Name`t|`tInstalled `t|`tLatest" -foregroundcolor "white"
write-host "---------------------------------------------"

CheckProductVersion $Prog2FilePath "Program 2" $Prog2Current
CheckProductVersion $Prog3FilePath "Program 3" $Prog3Current

Everything works currently the stuff at the beginning is just some remnants that I haven't cleared out yet.
As far as formatting, yes I understand it's not formatted and I'd prefer it that way as well. I'm spoiled by Visual Studio doing that for me automatically and the ISE does not.  I will revisit the rest of your suggestions later today.
Some of these things I'm doing are a result of some leeriness of my employer to allow IT to write compiled apps (I'm a Windows Batch and C# person trying to migrate to PS). Since Powershell covers about 90% of what I need compared to C# and it doesn't have
to be compiled it eases tensions with the powers that be.
Now that I even found that you can include WPF and XAML inside Powershell, I can write GUI apps as well.

  • [SOLVED] Console colors make text illegible (i.e. white on yellow)

As shown in this image, colored text on my console often appears as white on yellow or vice-versa.  When this happens, I can't read the text.
I believe these colors are the archlinux defaults, or specified by the programs I'm running.  I don't think its a product of my customizations but I could be wrong.  The text appears this way in bash or zsh.
I've been searching, but I can't find the right way to control the colors.  I'm not searching for a color scheme, although if that's the only solution, I'm open to suggestions. What I really want is a way to say, "never use colors as similar as yellow and white together."
    Thanks for any help.

There's no way to do specifically that - unless you set your TERM to something that cannot use color at all.
But you can easily define what the 14 default colors are.  Most programs don't actually specify a color, they just select from the 14 defaults (often just 7 really):
    # from bashrc
    # #RRGGBB
    echo -en "\e]P0181818" #black
    echo -en "\e]P8000000" #darkgrey
    echo -en "\e]P1a62a3e" #darkred
    echo -en "\e]P9f04758" #red
    echo -en "\e]P238912b" #darkgreen
    echo -en "\e]PA60aa2b" #green
    echo -en "\e]P3b27d12" #brown
    echo -en "\e]PBddb62b" #yellow
    echo -en "\e]P4355c9a" #darkblue
    echo -en "\e]PC45a3e6" #blue
    echo -en "\e]P57c4f9f" #darkmagenta
    echo -en "\e]PDc953ef" #magenta
    echo -en "\e]P6258f8f" #darkcyan
    echo -en "\e]PE60c6c8" #cyan
    echo -en "\e]P7aab8b8" #lightgrey
    echo -en "\e]PFd0d0d0" #white
    clear
Also, setting a good font can help readability.
EDIT: sorry, the above code is for TTY.  For terminals in X, you'd just set values in your Xresources/Xdefaults:
    *color0: #000000
    *color8: #666666
    *color1: #A62A3E
    *color9: #F04758

  • Mask- color range sometime crash , did it happen to you?

    Hi
    i run photoshop cs5 under w7 32bit ultimate
sometime when i select a mask ,  mask palete -> color range photoshop stops to work and give me an error
    did it happen to you?
    is there a cure?
    thanks
    cheers

This has been happening to me today only. I have been using this program for about a year now. Today I duplicated a layer, went to select at the top, and selected "Select Color". I selected a lot, most of the image, then when I clicked "Okay" it crashed. I did this several times and it persists. I remembered to copy the error thingy one time and it was this:
    Problem signature:

      C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WERBA11.tmp.appcompat.txt
      C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WERBD2F.tmp.mdmp
I don't have any plug-ins and when I went to look at the files listed, I opened WER3D6E.tmp.version.txt. But when I closed it, neither it nor the other two were there. I'm guessing the .tmp means they're temporary and I was only able to open that one because I did it so soon after the crash? Anyway, I came to these forums and saw something about MM fonts - I don't have any. I also saw people with this problem - color select. So, I opened CS5, duplicated the layer and before I could click "Select", it crashed. I forgot to get the report     but I got this:

    Any help would be great!

  • Colors dull, sometimes

I've had this problem before. I can't remember how I fixed it. This is in regard to my G5 Dual desktop. All of a sudden colors are dull, at least in some places. For example, the stock widget has green and red where it shows prices as being up or down. These have changed from bright green and red to dull green and red. On some web pages the colors of photos are dull and others normal. All the colors for Labels at the Finder level have gone dull.
I have tried restarting, shutting down completely, checking and switching my monitor color profile, zapping the PRAM, and I've checked the settings in Universal Access -> Seeing which appear correct with Black on White selected and Contrast at Normal.
Does anybody know what causes this or how to fix it?

There may be a graphic card processor issue or power issue behind changes in display colors
if they shift randomly and without explanation. Also, if the computer is running hot due to an
excessive dust accumulation then the power supply vents, fan, and other apparatus needs to
be cleaned of debris. This may also be the case in airflow through the channels where other
circuits are expected to lose their heat; since heat may be an issue behind hardware problems.
And troubleshooting can take on more than a few angles, since you have to find if there also
may be a software issue behind some of the symptoms the computer appears to display.
Do you have a heat indicating control panel such as Temperature Monitor? This kind of item
may allow it to be configured to report CPU heat sensor readouts & other sensors as available.
It is possible there may be a graphics card issue, and it could be failing.
Another source of odd behavior could be corrupted data on the system's hard disk drive; so
if there is something amiss there, that'd be another matter. Heat issues are suspect, though
not much more than a feeling at this point; some heat exchangers need cleaning more often
and there also may be some other problem going on. Failing hard drives also generate heat.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Zsh PS1 tty console color issues with newline

So in a tty I get only white in my PS1 when I use 2 lines:
    PS1="%{%F{white}%}%~ %{%F{green}%}%{%f%}%(10l.
    .)>> "
My old PS1 works fine though:
    PS1="%{%F{white}%}%~ %{%F{green}%}>> %{%f%}"
Anyone have any ideas / workarounds?

copy the rxvt-unicode-256color terminfo to ~/.terminfo/r/ on the remote and make sure your $TERM is set to it. If you get a error about it being too long either fix ssh on the remote, or just rename it and chante TERM acordingy.

  • New User Here: Changing the color scheme of console

    Hi there...
My name is Zia and I am from Pakistan. I am primarily a Ubuntu user. But I needed a lightweight console-only operating system specifically for some work in Intel Assembly and a few other things which do not need X. Someone told me Arch was what I was looking for. So I installed Arch base as guest on VirtualBox and so far, it is impressively. It is running on mere 128M physical and 4GB pre-allocated HDD with very nice results. I did hack away with a few things and set the basic configs up myself. That's no big deal since I have a little background knowledge of how Linux works, from my experience with Ubuntu. Ubuntu, however is a little more resource hungry so I am going for Arch on VM.
Enough with my boring chatter. I am here to ask help. Please direct me.
The console looks pretty boring. I changed the console font while installing and I think I can change it again in /etc/rc.d if I want, but the font looks good. The major problem is colors. I googled it and there are plenty of threads specifying how to change the background/foregriund colors of TTY. But that is not what I want. You see, when I list the contents of the directory, I want all the sub-directories to be listed in blue, all the executables in green and rest of the normal files simply white or grey, whatever... The problem is, I am not sure how I would do that.
Someone at some thread mentioned an .Xdefaults. I didn't come across such a file tampering with my Ubuntu box so naturally I am not familiar with it. If that is what I need to master before in order to get what I want, I shall need links or on-thread help, please.
    Thanking in anticipation. Zia
EDIT: I have not installed X. Just the base system with samba and a few other things. Should the .Xdefaults still control the console colors? I am not talking about the terminal inside X. I am talking about TTY.

    echo "alias ls='ls --color=auto'" >> ~/.bashrc
That will append the alias mentioned in post 2 to your .bashrc which is where aliases are stored (you should run this as user for user's bashrc and root for root's bashrc). You will need to logout or issue
    source ~/.bashrc
    to get it to work.
For example I've aliased ls to ls -sh to give me file sizes
    edit: fixed typo

  • Visited links sometimes don't change color, sometimes do, at the same sites.

I am using Firefox 4.0.1 under Win XP. Under Options/Content/Colors, the color of unvisited links are blue and visited links are purple. However, when I visit a link by clicking on it, the link temporarily changes color but after I visit the link and return to the original page, "'''''sometimes'''''" the link has reverted to its original blue (the unvisited color), and "'''''sometimes'''''" the color becomes the color it should be -- purple for a visited link. Using IE, the color always changes as it should.

Thanks for the input.  I tried that, and it didn't work.  It appears to work for everything else - just not download links.
Here's an example of my links:
    <a href="http://cdn.setxvideo.com/001.MTS" target="new">001.MTS</a>
    in my header is
    <style type="text/css">
    a:link {background-color:#B2FF99;}    /* unvisited link */
    a:visited {
    background-color:#FFFF85;} /* visited link */
    a:hover {background-color:#FF704D;}   /* mouse over link */
    a:active {background-color:#FF704D;}  /* selected link */
    </style>
Again, they work correctly in FireFox but not Safari.

  • RFE - Bring more color to the console

    Hi,
first posting it here so people can discuss it.
What i would like to propose is bringing a little more color in the default archlinux console:
    * [user@host ~] $ colors
    * grep --color=auto colors
And to give an idea how that looks:
    Grep colors
    Console colors
And this is how i did that (in .bashrc):
    # Check for an interactive session
    [ -z "$PS1" ] && return
    alias ls='ls --color=auto'
    alias grep='grep --color=auto'
    PS1='\033[01m[\033[0m \u\033[01;37m @ \033[0m\h \033[36m\W \033[01;37m]\033[0;32m \$\033[0m '
Now i would propose that this gets included in archlinux itself so every new arch user can enjoy these fancy colors ^_^
This can probably done by editing the global bashrc or the user .bashrc but i leave that up to the people that know what's best.
Let me know what you think of this idea.
Btw. for the grep color. That adjustment is already in bashrc for ls.. but not for grep, so it makes sense to me to include grep..
    Regards,
    Mark

While I can see that it is exciting for you to discover these possibilities, I firmly recommend not enabling them by default.
    1. It is not the Arch way:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way wrote:The Arch Linux system places precedence upon elegance of design as well as clean, simple code, rather than unnecessary patching, automation, eye candy or "newbie-friendliness"
    2. It is easy enough for anyone to do. I assume most Arch users already do similar configuration and/or customization to their console behaviour. See #1.
    3. It can break functionality for people that use retarded terminals.
    4. It is a matter of taste. A lot of people prefer gray on black terminals, and that's the traditional style too. If the user wants it different, (s)he may change it according to her wishes (see #1).

  • Off colors and giberish from video - flgrx ??

i get off colors and sometimes green giberish on some videos, regardless of player or codec. I though maybe it was compiz but i turned it off and still had the problem.
I have created two screenshots; the 1st one shows a video frame zoomed in twice, so you can see what happens, and the second one shows how colors are all off in a podcast.
    1st (zoom 100%, 105% & 110%):
    2nd:
So ... what do you guys think it might be ?

As a data point, I have had similar problems when using fglrx. These problems were solved by upgrades to fglrx. If you are using a framebuffer console with fglrx, first try using the normal console. Sometimes there are weird interactions between the framebuffer and fglrx. If you still have problems, try using the ati driver to see if your problems go away. If they do, fglrx is your problem. If they persist, I don't know what to check then, perhaps the hardware?
    Good luck.

  • Irritating console issue

For some reason when I jump through the history of commands I've used (no matter whether under a pure console or GUI console program), it sometimes "jumps" the text over five spaces.  It is hard to tell where the actual command starts when it does this.  This started when I recently re-installed Arch Linux.  I used the 2007-08-2 Core install CD.  I have two computers that I installed this version of Arch Linux on and both are having the same problem (one uses the KDEmod packages and the other uses Xfce).
I've also tried editing my .bashrc to change my PS1 command line parameter to add five spaces before where I type the command, but it still adds five more spaces after that point.
I realize it is a somewhat minor problem, but it would be nice to have it fixed.
By the way, the previous Arch Linux install I had on one of the computers did not have this problem.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

It works.  All I did was do a Google search, which led me to this site:
    http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-C … 0033.shtml
I added the color codes they suggested to colorize my prompt as it has been, and I changed the PS1 parameter to match.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • [SOLVED] urxvt colors and moc theme

I am a KDE user and usually i am using Konsole. For some applications (like htop and moc) i use urxvt (patched version from AUR). The problem is in colors. Moc config file:
    # This is a configuration file for the MOC player. It should be named
    # 'config' and placed in the ~/.moc directory. As this file can specify
    # commands which invoke other applications, MOC will refuse to start if it
    # is not owned by either root or the current user, or if it is writable by
    # anyone other than its owner. All options are given with their default
    # values, and therefore commented.
    # Comments begin with '#'.
    # You can use quotes and escape ('\') in parameters.
    # You can have variable values substituted by enclosing the variable name
    # as "${...}". (This only applies to the portion of the option following
    # the ' ='.) Variables are substituted first from the environment then,
    # if not found, from the configuration options. (Note that the value of
    # a configuration option substituted is that which it has at the time the
    # substitution variable is encountered.) If there is a naming conflict
    # between an environment and configuration variable, you may be able to
    # resolve it by using lowercase as the environment variable matches are
    # case-sensitive whereas the configuration variables are not.
    # You can also use the form "${...:-...}" where the value in the second
    # position will be substituted if the variable name given in the first
    # position is unset or null.
    # So, for example:
    # MusicDir = /music/${USER:-public}
    # Fastdir1 = ${MusicDir}/mp3/rock
    # Fastdir2 = ${MusicDir}/mp3/electronic
    # Fastdir3 = ${MusicDir}/mp3/rap
    # Fastdir4 = ${MusicDir}/mp3/etc
    # Variable names are limited to those accepted by the BASH shell; that
    # is, those comprising the upper- and lowercase ASCII characters, digits
    # and the underscore.
    # If you need to use the "${" sequence for any other purpose, write "$${"
    # and it will be replaced by "${" and not treated as a substitution.
    # Some options take lists of strings as their values. The strings are
    # separated by colons. Additional strings can be appended to the list
    # using "+ =" in place of a plain "=" to assign the value. For an example,
    # see the XTerms option.
    # You can override any configuration option when you run MOC using the
    # '-O' command line option:
    # mocp -O AutoNext =no -O messagelingertime=1 -O XTerms+=xxt:xwt
    # This command line option can be repeated as many times as needed and
    # the configuration option name is not case sensitive. (Note that MOC
    # does not perform variable substitution on the value of such overridden
    # configuration options.) Most option values are set before the
    # configuration file is processed (which allows the new values to be
    # picked up by substitutions), however list-valued options are overridden
    # afterwards (which gives the choice of whether the configured values are
    # replaced or added to).
    # Remember that the client and server are separate processes and the
    # server will retain the configuration values formed from the environment
    # within which it was originally started.

    # PreferredDecoders allows you to specify which decoder should be used
    # for any given audio format. It is a colon-separated list in which
    # each entry is of the general form 'code(decoders)', where 'code'
    # identifies the audio format and 'decoders' is a comma-separated list
    # of decoders in order of preference.
    # The audio format identifier may be either a filename extension or a
    # MIME media type. If the latter, the format is 'type/subtype' (e.g.,
    # 'audio/flac'). Because different systems may give different MIME
    # media types, any 'x-' prefix of the subtype is ignored both here and
    # in the actual file MIME type (so all combinations of 'audio/flac' and
    # 'audio/x-flac' match each other).
    # For Internet streams the matching is done on MIME media type and on
    # actual content. For files the matches are made on MIME media type
    # (if the 'UseMimeMagic' option is set) and on filename extension. The
    # MIME media type of a file is not determined until the first entry for
    # MIME is encountered in the list.
    # The matching is done in the order of appearance in the list with any
    # entries added from the command line being matched before those listed
    # here. Therefore, if you place all filename extension entries before
    # all MIME entries you will speed up MOC's processing of directories
    # (which could be significant for remote file systems).
    # The decoder list may be empty, in which case no decoders will be used
    # for files (and files with that audio format ignored) while Internet
    # streams will be assessed on the actual content. Any decoder position
    # may contain an asterisk, in which case any decoder not otherwise listed
    # which can handle the audio format will be used. It is not an error to
    # list the same decoder twice, but neither does it make sense to do so.
    # If you have a mix of audio and non-audio files in your directories, you
    # may wish to include entries at top of the list which ignore non-audio
    # files by extension.
    # In summary, the PreferredDecoders option provides fine control over the
    # type of matching which is performed (filename extension, MIME media
    # type and streamed media content) and which decoder(s) (if any) are used
    # based on the option's list entries and their ordering.

I read wiki but didn't find anything useful. Thanks for any info.

3d3d3d is for red but you have a blackish and color2 is for green but you have it white the rest should be the default colors. it uses the same colors only it changes the vairiant of the color you choice there or normally moc uses colors such as green blue and such which will call your console colors for those respective fields I know moc has /user/share/moc/themes/ that you can edit or make your own for instance copy one and edit it. I think htop uses the same color count which is 8 but with so green will be white when you use urxvt. 8 for normal colors 16 for bright dark and urxvt is 256 which is 16 but can use any of the 256 colors for 16.
just to clarify you have commented out your colors 4-15 and your green and red is weird, and htop aswell as moc is 8 bit. moc theme_yellow_red is default for background so it will use urxvts background
Haahaha, that is simple. And it works!!!
I didn't bother with commenting that because i thought they are not applied. Anyway, thanks man. My urxvt terminal si grateful to you and your thorough explanation. SOLVED!

  • Problem to start BPEL Console of Oracle BPEL Process Manager 10.1.3.1.0

    Hi everyone!
I'm writing to yours because I installed Oracle BPEL Process Manager 10.1.3.1.0 but I can't start BPEL Console. I tried to start it by the option menu of Windows XP and by Developer Prompt, but I get a HTTP 404 Not Found page. When I was installing the universall installer told me that it wasn't possible to set ORACLE_HOME variable because it had a value older than 1023 characteres. So, I continue the installation but I can't start the BPEL Console. The Dos Console teld me sometimes when I put http://localhost:9700/BPELConsole..timed out. So, tell me how to resolve that problem.
    I'll be waiting your responses.

    Thanks for your responses.
    Greetings.

    Hi,
    you said:
it wasn't possible to set ORACLE_HOME variable because it had a value older than 1023 characteres
What do you mean with older than 1023 chars?
I think the easiest way is to uninstall the BPEL Console and run the installer again with correcting the ORACLE_HOME problem...

  • How to get AirPrint on iOS to print color documents in black and white?

I use iOS 6.0.1 and I use AirPrint on my iphone4s to print documents wirelessly to my printer. The problem is that if the document that I am printing has ANY color on it at all, the printer will print that part in color. Sometimes I actually want the document in black and white only. But AirPrint doesn't give us the option to do this , like OS X for Mac does.
Color ink is way too expensive to just be using "willy-nilly".
Apple , give us a black and white option on AirPrint !
Anyone know any ways around this until Apple updates iOS ?

It might be a problem with your printer's color profile. Did you try to set the color profile in the print dialogue to "black and white" (choose: "more options" in the print panel) ?

  • Secondary color correction not working in Premiere CC

    Greetings,
I'm unable to build secondary color correction masks in Three Way Color Corrector, RGB Curves etc in the current version of Premiere CC.
In any of these plugins, when I check "show mask" I get the usual white slate filling the frame. But when I use the color picker to make a selection the whole frame stays white. It appears that I'm making selections but it's not building the mask for some reason. When making an extreme color change I can see that the mask is not building as it affects the whole frame.
This started after upgrading to CC. I've recently updated to the most up to date version (yesterday) and am still having the same problem.
    Premiere CC 2014.1 Release
    8.1.0 (81) Build
Macbook Pro Retina, 15" Late 2013
    2Gh Intel Core i7
    8Gb
    Intel Iris Pro 1536Mb
    Yosemite Version 10.10
*note-my Colleague is not having this problem, he's working on the same OS and same CC build but he has an Imac. So I'm guessing this problem is unique to my hardware config.
Anybody else have this problem or know of a fix?

I have the same Problem new MAC OS Premier Pro CC or Premier Pro CS6 both have an issue with the Title Tool. If you open the title tool and try to make color changes or change size of the font it sticks at the default color and default font. SOmetimes the title tool will work and then when I exit it's back to the default first type location, default font and default color. Sometimes it will not even let me exit the Title Tool.
Please help I have Projects I'm working on Deadlines and I pay a monthly Fee for Software that works and it's not working.

  • Second monitor displays weird colors

    Hi there,
Yesterday I bought a Displayport to HDMI adapter (Mini DisplayPort Male - HDMI female) for my MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2011 version). I use this to connect my MacBook Pro to my Philips 32" television. Everything has been set up (I've adjusted the resolution of the TV to 1080p and put my refresh rate to 50 hz since my TV doesn't support 60 hz). But once in every 5 - 15 minutes or so, my screen turns green for a brief second and suddenly my background or whatever is on my second monitor turns in to weird colors. Sometimes it takes about 2 or 3 seconds and it switches back to how it normally was, but sometimes it takes way longer. I don't mirror my screen, I use it as a second display. But I can't figure out why the screen it switching betweens there colors and don't know how to fix it. I've looked it up on the internet, but couldn't find anything useful. So I hope you guys could help me with this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Bump.
