Console Errors from Time Machine

Time Machine starts normally, but soon gets stuck.   No progress backing up, and the time estimate steadily increases. The console logs repeat this message every 15 seconds:
5/29/12 11:13:20.000 PM kernel: /SourceCache/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-37/Compressors/Dataless/comp ressorType5Kext.c:532: Error: post_request error for /Volumes/T3/Backups.backupdb/jbenniMac/2012-05-29-210005.inProgress/E793898E-8F 38-47F2-B008-060D9D5B7DDF/Macintosh HD/.DocumentRevisions-V100-bad-1/PerUID/501/153/com.apple.documentVersions/44B0 661A-E51B-4F0F-9F77-281DAF310C78.m: 35
The source drive Verifies as clean under Disk Utils.  The dest drive is a new Seagate 3T goflex desk, using FW800 (also tried USB).  It's freshly partitioned and formatted HFS+journaled.
Can anyone shed some light on the problem and solution, or a troubleshooting methodology?
Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what that's all about, but what jumps at me is /.DocumentRevisions-V101-bad-1
.DocumentRevisions-V101 is your (hidden) Versions database (all the previously-changed "chunks" of files made by apps that support AutoSave and Versions).
Seeing -bad-1 appended to the name looks like the database got corrupted internally (in a way Disk Utility can't detect), OSX renamed it, and made a new one.
First, let's exclude that from Time Machine backups (ironically, the "good" version is excluded automatically!). See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #10 -- you'll have to check the Show Invisible Items box there, then on your internal HD, you should see the "bad" folder you want to exclude.
Then run a backup and report your results.

Anyone seen this sort of error before. In a window, the following pops up

Is there a limit to how much Time Machine can backup in a single hit after the initially backup or some other limitation, or have I missed something?

It says it has enough space and then the error -34 is disk full. What's that all about? The file alphanumerically before this one has a longer name by a few characters so I doubt it is a pathname size issue, but who knows.
    Anyone?

  • Constant errors from Time Machine with error code 36 and 8062

    Hi chaps,
I have trawled the internet and spent a huge amount of time on this problem and can't seem to fix it.
This is the first backup on to a brand new external USB hard disk, formatted correctly.
It starts the backup fine and then stops and a random point normally before 5GB with the same error every time but on different files.
First it was failing on garageband so I excluded that, then it failed on a strange pdf that I can't find in User Templates which I excluded with no joy.
I've turned off spotlight for the external disk and tried several different formats, again with no success.
It first errors with 36 and then after 8062
Can any suggest what is going on please?

Are you certain? That's the most common cause of initial backups failing on a new disk (since most new disks come set up for Windoze), and has exactly your symptoms. See #C1 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, and/or this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550?viewlocale=en_US

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

Do I need to uninstall CS4 and reinstall?
    Unfortunately yes.
Also run the Cleaner Tool prior to reinstalling
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Restoring from Time Machine backups invariably breaks the activation mechanism (Error 150:30) and there's no easy way to fix a 150:30 error other than via re-installing.

  • Can't restore from Time Machine backup error message

My hard drive on my Macbook failed a few days ago. Just makes a clanking noise and won't boot up etc... I installed a new drive, formatted it, and selected restore from Time Machine backup from the installer screen. It started restoring from my backup I had on an external drive and everything was fine untill it got about 6% done then get a message that says "An error occured when restoring from the backup" It is pretty non descriptive. It also says please restart your system and try again or something to that effect. I tried again, same problem.  When I try to copy files over manually I eventually gets some error that says there is a problem with a file and it will quit. Any ideas on how to get my data? I can see all my files on there, but can't get them. My backup disc is just used for backup on this one machine nothing else, so it shouldn't have a problem. Help!

Good to hear MA is doing something!

After reformatting my 1 Tb WD ext drive and tinkering with the "exclude these items" list, I now get the following error message from Time Machine: "Are you sure you want to back up to the same device your original data is on?"  I've reformatted in Disk Utilities...not sure what I did wrong.  Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again.

Leopard.  Did a full restore from Time Machine.  Now I can't access my other internal and external drives.  I get the following error: The folder “Capture Video” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  I have repaired permissions pn the main harddrive.  When I try too click on a disk I get the previously stated error.  I can't even open up information to see what permission/access there is.  It simply will not let me see the content.  It shows the content of my main hard drive when I have clicked the other harddrive's name.

    Solved:
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"

I had to restore my iMac from Time Machine. After the restoration all programs are functioning except my Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium. When I start any program in the suite the error message, "Licensing for this product has stopped working." I restarted the computer and tried again to run Photoshop and the same error message appeared. The message was followed by a message that stated that I needed to contact Adobe technical support and mention Error: 150.30. I need Adobe technical support to provide me a solution for my problem so I can continue using my Adobe products installed on my computer.

Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite.  You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.

I've recently received an error message from Time Machine that my Macbook Pro's sparsebundle is in use.  What is this and what can I do about it?

This is asked at least 5-6 times a day here.
Look at the right hand column.. more like this.
It is a bug in Mountain Lion.
    Read C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But the fast solution.. unplug the TC.. count to 10.. plug it back in.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • Errors Since Restoring from Time Machine back-up.

I had to do a complete wipe of my iMac hard drive, reinstall Mac OS X and then restore a backup from Time Machine. Now I am getting errors when trying to open Illustrator files, create new Illustrator documents, or open .ai files through Photoshop. I am using the Creative Cloud CS6 versions.

Ok, now I tried to open a .indd file in InDesign and got a slew of errors about conflicting plug-in files. There were dozens of them.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Connect to the TC via Ethernet cable if at all possible.
Try repairing your backups, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
