Console errors re: free agent drive

I converted from Windows to Mac for my home computer and have been very happy. I noticed however that the computer has been slower recently. I did research on the internet and did things like repair disk permissions, zap PRAM, etc. Still is slow. I researched and learned about something called Console. I opened mine and noticed that I am getting the following error every 15 seconds:
Dec 20 19:51:07 richard-cobbs-imac mds[26456]: (/Volumes/FreeAgent Drive/.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/10EFE2E4-87FE-4C19-952B-4F419BFCEE18)(Err or) IndexSDB in dbflushdatastore:/Volumes/FreeAgent Drive/.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/10EFE2E4-87FE-4C19-952B-4F419BFCEE18/stor e.db : dbsyncdatastore: !WARNING! prior write-errors invalidate sync.
I searched Google and the Apple support forums and cannot find out what to do. I tried to repair the disk via disk utility and I got a warning that the disk was not or could not be unmounted. I tried to unmount it with the unmount option and it would not let me. What do I do? Where do I go from here?
Thx.
Rick

According to the disk utility, it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Regarding the sync software, I have no idea. I googled "windows sync software on Mac" to see what you might be referring to. The primary responses were for Windows phone which we don't have. I don't remember much about setting up the Free Agent (which is one reason I like the Mac so much). I plugged it in...I remember going to Time Machine to make sure it was working...and it seemed to be backing up. With the error I am getting, I am fearful that I have a false sense of security...that it isn't backing up. I can see the different dates/time stamps on the right of the Time Machine screen as if it is being backed up.

  • Remote backup to Free Agent Drive: OSStatus error -6602 ??

Reposted with minor edits from the Leopard section...
We are trying to back up our desktop Macs to a Seagate Free Agent disk locally attached to a Mac Pro running Mac OS X Server v.10.5.5. The desktop nodes are all iMacs running 10.5.6. When we try to set up Time Machine to use the remote disk, we get an error "Operation could not be completed. OSStatus error -6602"
We get the same error on 3 different nodes whether the disk is shared or NFS mounted. It is not that the Free Agent drive is in power saving shutdown as we have seen this error whilst Time Machine running locally on the Mac Pro was backing up to it. That backup, BTW, was successful.
At this point I wonder if this is some incompatibility with the Seagate firmware. Has anyone else encountered this problem? A quick Google search on the error code turns up scant information -- perhaps something to do with permissions, the details of which I'm not too familiar on Macs.

I may have found a solution... if I connect to the server from the remote machine I see the backup volume with a -1 appended to its name. If I first open that volume from the Finder and then try to set up TM, I can select the Backups-1 volume, authenticate as myself, and TM will back up to that volume. I'm not sure yet whether the connection has to be kept open somehow for unattended backups to work.

  • I am having problem with Segate free agent drive.

Since I installed Mountain lion on my iMac 24" I am having problem with a previously installed Seagate drive.  When I am in finder and click on the Free Agent drive, I get the following error.  VTDecoderXPCService quit unexpectedly. I click reopen and a few seconds later I get same message.  This did not occur when I was using Snow Leopard  Very annoying. Any suggestions?  Note I have many movies and important data on this drive and don't want to lose. What does this error mean and is there some way to correct?

  • Free agent drive installation help

When I try to reformat my external free agent drive I get an error message saying that it quit unexpectedly. Anyone know the problem?
I can't use my drive until it is reformatted.

That's not how you format the drive. Do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • NotificationExec pop-up after installing Free Agent Drive Manager

I've just installed the Free Agent Drive Manager for a Maxtor 4 One Touch. Now I'm getting a NotificationExec pop-up after installing Free Agent Drive Manager. I've trashed the drive manager but I can't seem to get rid of the pop up. Any suggestions?

    Hi Todd,
That's incompatible software, and from reading other posts, it sounds like even the official uninstaller does not get rid of everything. Do a Spotlight search for file name "NotificationExec" and "Free Agent Drive Manager" and include system and invisible files. Trash the files you find, empty your trash and you should be good to go.

  • Free agent drive not found seagate desktop 750 GB

I am not able to find the external drive that is attached to my iMac.  Has anyone had this problem.  I have powered down and restarted both the drive and the computer without sucess.  I also have a 2TB FreeAgent GoFlex drive that is found.

    Chakys1947 wrote:
It was working fine until Mountain Lion.
GoFlex interfaces are prone to failure.  It is entirely possible that the installation of ML was a co-incidence and the drive failed.  If possible I'd try the drive on another computer to see if the interface is still good.
I've had three of the GoFlex drives and all three failed with symptoms exactly as you describe.  I ended up scrapping the interfaces and putting the hard drives into more reliable enclosures where they are still going strong.

  • Free agent drive, and networking

    Hi all.
I've recently obtained a terabyte sized hdd,
    It's a USB interface.
I was interested in connecting it with my wrt54gs wireless router so that I would not have to keep it plugged in to my laptop all the time, or when I wanted to access files on it.
I looked at the router and there are no USB ports on it. It has 4 open RJ-45 jacks, for wired connections.
Has anyone figured out a way to connect a hard drive directly to a router for ease of access?

Hi Steve, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It can't be done with what you have, but with something like these...
    http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/review-pogoplug-makes-any-usb-drive-a-nas-200 9046/
    http://www.gadgetvenue.com/hitachi-simplenet-usb-drive-nas-converter-07145219/
    http://www.addonics.com/products/nas/nasu2.asp
Be sure to read reviews on them, as some have had very poor reviews.
PS. 100 BaseT is going to be even slower than USB2 though.
Apple makes one two, but you want to check compatability first.

This article has a link for more information on finding your profile directory: [[Fix the "Could not initialize the application's security component" error message]]. On Windows 7, you can try this (either in a Windows Explorer window address bar or from the start menu search box):
    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
You may see one folder in there and that's the one you want. If you see more than one, look for the one with the most recently modified files.

I have a free agent desk 500 GB external hard drive.  Since updating my iMac OS to Mountain Lion it no longer backs up through Time Maching like it did in the past.  Now, after completing its work it says, "Unable to complete backup.  An error occurred while creating the backup folder."  I cannot find any sites that help me fix this.  Do I need to purchase a new external hard drive?

    Hi Aaron,
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imaging something not being covered there.

  • I have a Free Agent external backup hard drive connected to my iMac Intel desktop via USB.  Why do I get an error message, from time to time, upon startup stating: "disk was disconnected improperly, always eject disk before disconnecting"?

I have a Free Agent external backup hard drive connected to my iMac Intel desktop via USB, I never unplug it.  Why do I get an error message, from time to time, upon startup stating, "Disk was disconnected improperly.  Always eject disk before disconnecting."?

I never unplug the external harddrive, and the error message comes up only occassionaly upon startup.  Maybe the USB connection gets disrupted enough to cause the computer to see it as disconnected and then reconnected while the iMac is powered.

I tried your suggestion, and it's been giving me the message "Preparing for Backup" for the past 8 hours.  Does this mean TM is backing up my hard drive?  I'll give it a few more hours, but if nothing else happens, I'm not sure what else to do.  I'm not sure if there are any new external hard drives that are compatible with ML yet.

  • I have downloaded Mountain Lion and Time Machine says that my Free Agent Goflex (Seagate) external 2gb drive cannot be used as it is read only. I tried disc utility to repair permissions but that block is greyed out. The disc verifies as being OKI

Since installing Mountain Lion, Time Machine says says that my Free Agent Goflex (Seagate) external 2gb drive cannot be used as it is read only. I tried disc utility to repair permissions but that block is greyed out. The disc verifies as being OKI What next?

Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.

A few things to check are:
Make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work.
The USB port at the AirPort Exteme is under powered. You almost always need to use a powered USB hub with a drive at this port, even if the drive has its own power supply.
