Console logs: Couldn't read user-specified computer name

Last night I was experiencing frozen apps, was unable to open web pages and could not open the Apple menu to Restart computer. Somehow I eventually managed to Restart and everything seemed OK.
When I checked in Console logs tonight, I saw this message:
Couldn't read user-specified Computer name; using default using default "Macintosh 00145112d484. local instead"
I found BDAqua"s reply to a similar problem dated 4/14/08 - "Try editing it in both places in Sharing Pref pane." However, I could not find what I exactly had to edit!
I would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks.

Hi there,
However, I could not find what I exactly had to edit!
In System Preferences>Sharing Pref pane...
Then click on the edit button to verify, it'll have the .local after it here.

    Any problem here?
    Thankyou.

    Hi
Not really. Although it may be an indication of a confused/corrupted property list. Probably one of the plists in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration. If it bothers you re-assign the mac the Computer Name you think it should have? This is done from the Sharing Preferences Pane. Alternatively you could use the command line. Something like:
    sudo scutil --set ComputerName thenameyouwant
There must be a password set for the local admin account for sudo to work. You won't see the password being typed.
Alternatively and assuming this is a single mac that's not part of an LDAP environment or has no Location settings or has nothing special in terms of network configurations, you could move all of the property lists in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration to an untitled folder you create on your Desktop and restart afterwards. On successful login apply a desired Computer Name using the Sharing Preferences Pane.

  • HA-VMM cannot be installed : HAVMM name in db is differs from the user specified HAVMM name

I have a two node HA VMM cluster.  This is working correctly and has been for while.  I am now attempting to add an additional node to the cluster.
I joined the node to the cluster and then start the VMM install and follow the wizard till it gets to the Database Configuration Page.  When I Click Next here nothing happens.
If I check the C:\ProgramData\VMMLogs\SetupWizard.log file I see the following error as the last item.
HA-VMM cannot be installed : HAVMM name in db is differs from the user specified HAVMM name
    If I check the S
CVMMCDB01 I find the HAVMMName property with a value of SCVMMC01.domainname  This is the same value that is returned when using powershell with Get-SCVMMServer
When I check the cluster configuration it is the same story.  I connect to the  cluster name scvmmc01.
Even if I look at Cluster Manager I can see the name is tied correctly.
Any ideas would be great as I am effectively now stuck and cannot install another node.

    Greetings!
It happened because you renamed your VMM cluster after first node installation.
Juts update HAVMMName value in dbo.tbl_VMM_GlobalSetting. Start SQL Server Management Studio, connect to your VMM DB, and Edit table.

  • 22591 The specified computer name (%ComputerName;) is already in use by another virtual machine or by a virtual machine configuration object. Ensure that the computer name is unique in the VMM environment, and then try again.

    Hello everyone,
I recently bummed into an error message when I want to deploy a service template.
    Setup:
    1 HyperV server on win2k12 r2
1 SCCM VMM 2k12r2 on the hyperv server
1 template with all the objects in the library
    Error:
When I deploy the the service template I get the below error message.
    22591
The specified computer name (%ComputerName;) is already in use by another virtual machine or by a virtual machine configuration object.
Ensure that the computer name is unique in the VMM environment, and then try again.
The issue is that I can't find it anywhere, not on my domain controller not on my dns server as a record and also not as a vm in sccm or in powershell when doing get-vm. So where do I need to remove it ( no it is not an option to create a new Hostname for
    this service template ).
    Andre

There could be a couple things happening.
One - you have a Service Template, it defines %Computername% as a variable.  And you have deployed this Template once using 'foo' and you are deploying it again as 'foo' without deleting the previous instance.
Two - you hardcoded the computer name into the template.
Three - you are scaling out and you have hit the bug that the wizard does not increment the machinename if you have something like computername## where SCVMM should be incrementing the machine name.
Windows does not support identically named machines (you can't have two machines on the same network with the same computer name - they broadcast their name and the 'second' one shuts down its network stack).  In support of this SCVMM also enforces
    this rule.
And with any templates SCVMM is in charge of machine names at deployment.

    Hi Lynn,
Thanks for your analyst and reply, I run the command as you suggested and checked accordingly to Task Manager, but seems none of them indicates a firewall or anti-virus.

  • Changing 'main' user and computer name

    Hi everybody!
I got an older iBook from my sis. I'm trying to remove her stuff and clean it up a bit for my use. Is there a way to change the main user account so the computer isn't in her name anymore? I tried creating a new admin account, but I can't delete the first account. Also I can't change the computer name on the main log in screen. Any suggestions?
I was thinking about bringing it in to a store. I'm sure they can do it quick fast in a hurry.
    cheers.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Matt Clifton has given his suggestions here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1076960
You need to log out and log back in with the new account in order to delete the old one.
(It really isn't necessary to delete the other account unless you need the hard drive space. You can simply choose to have it automatically log in to your account and not the old one.)
To change the computer's name go to System Preferences > Sharing and change the computer's name there.

  • Export:- User specified file name

    Hi,
On clicking Export button in BIP, the filename is same as BIP Report heading in file Open Dialog box, is there any way to give filename same as selected value from Dashboard Prompt. So when someone click Export, by default it should take the same file name as selected in Dropdown value.
    -Amit

    give this at title
    @{presentation_variable}
    and uncheck 'Display Saved Name'
this gives you the title name as the user selected prompt value..

  • Computer name and local hostname not recognized at startup

I've been having trouble syncing with .mac lately. (This isn't syncing question.) Looking at my console and system logs, it would appear that my computer and network connection have a problem right from the start (except that I can connect to the Internet and can send and receive mail no problem). But I think the logs below indicate that there's some disconnect because later on, when I try to sync or do something with iDisk, "Failed to register NSConnection" and SFIDiskMirrorCopyPair returned NULL" appear in the console log. Here's some of what the logs showed. I was wondering if anyone out there can make heads or tails out of it. Wondering if I'll have to blow it up and do an archive and install.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you for helping me. My computer is very old and it gets a lot of non-taxing use, like email and word processing. I'm trying to get another year out of it before I replace it. I first had to reset the PRAM because I had full-on freeze a couple of months ago. I couldn't get the computer to respond at all. Apple Support helped. They had me reset the PRAM, but the reason I've been resetting it now and again is that it seemed to fix a problem I was having with audio. When I am using Skype, Facetime or Gchat there was a crackling sound so loud, I'd have to hang up. Resetting the PRAM seemed to take care of this. I read around a little on the Internet. There was some suggestion that maybe my logic board is failing, at which point I would really have to replace my computer. But I was hoping for some pointers about this keyboard. I spent a couple of days reading and didn't find anyone having quite my problem. I guess it wouldn't really be such a problem if I didn't have this audio problem as well.

  • MDNSResponder can't recognize Computer Name or local hostname?

When looking in Console Logs recently, I noticed log messages saying the mDNSResponder could not read user-specified Computer name or host name and using default names etc. Example: "Aug 18 13:46:23 dialup-4 mDNSResponder: Couldn't read User-specified Computer Name; using default "Macintosh-000000000000" instead" I am using dialup internet service with the internal modem. These messages are created when I log on and off the internet. Are these messages normal or is my computer missing some data? I am having no problems getting on and off the internet, I just don't understand the logs. Thanks for any help.

    Thoughts?

I think Directory Utility is in 10.5+, it's called Directory Access in previous versions (at least in 10.4). I have an OD running on the Mac server that I am trying to bind to, the AD/windows server is just for the PCs.
I did find this though about the mDNSresponder error I'm getting:
    (from http://lists.apple.com/archives/bonjour-dev/2005/Aug/msg00020.html)
-65557 means NAT Traversal error. You need to be using a router that
supports NAT-PMP or UPnP if you want to register your hostname
    successfully using DNS Update.
I enabled UPnP on my router/firewall but it did not help.

  • HT5884 Console Logs for Troubleshooting SMB

The Troubleshooting section in the article says "The following Console logs may help advanced users identify an issue." It then does not specify the logs. Does anyone know what Console logs are most helpful when troubleshooting SMB connections?

Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support
The "dark wake" is normal. The Spotlight crashes are not.
Reindex the entire volume. If you have an external Thunderbolt drive connected, reindex it too.

  • Constant Console logs from ardtaskmonitor

Every 10 seconds I'm getting entries in the Console log for ardtaskmonitor reading:
    10/15/09 10:06:28 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[167] (ardtaskmonitor[1490]) >posix_spawn("/Users/admin/Library/Application Support/Remote Desktop >Assistant/TaskMonitorAgent", ...): No such file or directory
    10/15/09 10:06:28 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[167] (ardtaskmonitor[1490]) Exited >with exit code: 1
    10/15/09 10:06:28 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[167] (ardtaskmonitor) Throttling >respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
Anyone know what these mean and to fix if necessary? There is no remote task server, and the get entered into the Console log regardless of whether or not the ARD Admin app is runing.

Michael how about using Apple System log(ASL) facility for my requirement?
Can you help me out in understanding ASL ?

  • SBBOD and Console Log

The "scrolling beach ball of death" continues to inhabit every program on my laptop. After finding an article on trouble-shooting, I found the following logs inside the Console Log. But, I have no idea how to read what they mean. They were posted about the time that the SSBOD occurred the last time.
Can anyone assist in interpreting if these logs may point to some cause of the SBBOD?

    Hi,
First off, the network tab does not work  in weinre with the exception of XHR. The resource tab is limited to Session Storage, Local Storage, and Databases. From what I know these are fact-of-life limitations of the tool.
I just tested the console tab and console logging for a local page and it's working fine for me with our hosted version of weinre. If you're not seeing logging messages can you describe about your environment and how you're testing? Can you provide a test asset that's not displaying console log messages?
