ConsoleOne on Windows 7

I have finnaly gotten the word that next year we will move to Windows 7.
I have downloaded the GroupWise 8.02 sp2 installer, installed ConsoleOne. When I try to run C1 I get the error "You have Novell client version lower than 4.91".
My PC is running Win 7, Home premium. SP1. 64 Bit. Novell client 2-sp3 for Windows 7 (IR3).
I searched the Forums and did not find anything. But I am sure this must have been discussed in the past.
any help would be great

I believe latest version of ConsoleOne which should work on
Windows 7 without requiring any other changes is available within
download for GroupWise 8 SP3 HP3[1].
One complication might be that you're using Windows 7 Home Premium
- I don't believe the Novel Client is supported with Home
editions of Windows 7 so it's possible that's what is tripping up
ConsoleOne.
You should note that ConsoleOne is no longer a supported product
in it's own right and is only provided with GroupWise 8 & 2012
downloads whilst used for management functions. The next version
of GroupWise (2014, codenamed Windermere) doesn't use
ConsoleOne.

  • ConsoleOne and Windows 7

With the rapid oncoming inevitability of Windows 7 and having completely skipped Vista as a viable Enterprise OS I've been doing a bit of testing.
I have had Windows 7 x64 Build 7232 running as my primary OS for a bit over a week now and I have to say that it's quite an accomplished presentation. Using the Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 I have managed to set up my desktop in a thoroughly usable manner with a fully working GroupWise 8 client, properly mapping drives (after an initial odd process of having to re-enter my Tree and Context a couple of times it now goes in an maps all drives seamlessly), and up until yesterday when I allowed my machine to sleep overnight a fully working ConsoleOne.
It appears that the Novell Client, Groupwise and especially ConsoleOne do not like being recovered out of Sleep as all the network connections are dropped and do not recover gracefully. Groupwise and the drive mappings were not an issue as rebooting and logging in again resolved that issue without much fuss. ConsoleOne on the other hand has not recovered gracefully at all. Now when attempting to make a change to a user I get communication errors and when trying to change a users password I get the following error:
(Error 0x8801) A request was attempted with and invalid or nonattached connection handle.
Further investigation (i.e. clicking on Details :) ) produces this:
    0x8801 CONN INVALID
    Source
    Client Services
    Explanation
An attempt by an application to request a connection failed. If a connection is closed, it becomes invalid.
    Possible Cause
The connection handle that is being used by the requesting application no longer refers to a given connection slot in the requester's connection table. In this case, the application, such as an executable file or driver, might be out of date.
    Possible Cause
An application might request that a connection be closed without any regard to other applications that point to the open connection.
    Action
Try the task again. If the error persists, contact the developer of the application for the latest version of the application.
    Possible Cause
The server ran out of connections.
    Action
To free a connection, have a user who is connected to the server log out. Or, to increase the number of connections allowed for that server, go to a workstation where a user is connected to the server and has Supervisor rights, and increase the number of connections allowed.
    Possible Cause
The software might not allow more connections for the client. For example, in some of the NetWare 3.12 utilities, like MAP and CAPTURE, this error will be returned if the workstation is attached to 9 or more servers. In NetWare 3.12, these utilities were designed to provide functionality for only 8 servers.
    Action
If you desire to increase the number of connections that a workstation can have, use a version of the software that will allow more connections. The utilities in NetWare 4 and later versions allow this number of connections.
    Possible Cause
The connection might have been closed at the server, such as by an administrator clearing a connection using MONITOR.
    Action
If desired, have the user log in again to the network.

So - a little ambiguous in the Possible Cause/Action scenarios. I did try uninstalling my Novell Client and re-installing without NMAS as this has been known to cause issues.
The other thing I would've liked to have tried was re-installing ConsoleOne - but there is the small issue of C1 checking for an up to date version of the Novell Client being present and as was entirely expected C1 doesn't recognise the Beta Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 as being a viable up to date Windows client and promptly boots you out of the install siting that version 4.91 is a much more up to date client and that I should install that instead before trying to update C1... Nice...
You might ask how I got C1 working on Windows 7 in the first place - well it was fairly straight forward - I copied the installation off the network rather than trying to do a local install as I have seen many instances of people having to do registry hacks to get it installing - this doesn't make much sense to me as the reality is that the majority of enterprise environments use Windows and within the next 6-12 months Windows 7 is going to start having a level of penetration making our having to administer to it inevitable.
Not being able to administer to your environment because the tools don't work is not really acceptable. Granted W7 is in RC1 at the moment and as such is not strictly a released OS and as such isn't 'supported' surely it's better to start looking into this stuff sooner rather than later. I'd use iManager but it is an utterly painful and woefully non-intuitive tool when compared to C1. There is a HUGE amount of work left to go toward making that one a viable admin tool.
So rant over - my questions:
    1. Is ConsoleOne a dead admin tool and is it something that we as network administrators should be fogetting in favor of iMangler?
    2. Does anyone have a more definitive idea what might be causeing the 0x8801 CONN INVALID error and what might be a way of fixing it as for now ConsoleOne is a significantly better admin tool for us.
    3. Are the any plans for Windows 7 support and when is Novell going to start making this support available to the end users?
    4. As far as Novell admin tools go - am I missing something? Is there a super intuitive clever admin tool out there that nicely centralises our workload?
    Many thanks!

new poroducts should be managed through iMAnager. Alas, as so often,
Novell doesn't have the power to impose its own decisions to its own
product teams and so some teams continued to use ConsoleOne as their main
management tool, even though the death of ConsoleOne was clearly and
loudly announced in advance. This now leaves the customers in the bad
situation that a recently shipped product like Groupwise 8 uses a dead an
    unsupported Management tool ConsoleOne.
Bad is one way to put it, extremely amateurish is another. How can a company as large and established as Novell after six years still get this realtively basic thing so wrong? Don't get me wrong, I've been a Novell fan for years but, there is something terribly wrong with the development process if upper management can't control their own dev teams!
So not only are we as customers faced with a piecemeal approach to our admin processes but we're also going to have to face having to administer with externally unsupported tools whilst the dev teams still insist on plugging away with them. Personally I'd start putting my time an effort back into getting ConsoleOne into a usable state as it is far superior (I can't believe I'm saying this about Conslow 1 ;) ) admin tool compared to the entirely unintuitive iManager. Either that or employ some accessability specialists to work on iManager because in it's current state it is not a particularily friendly structure to work through.

client version check and refuses to run on a client with a version number

Installing and Running ConsoleOne on Windows Vista
Cheers for the reply Marcel, I do appreciate it despite my gripes about the situation. I used the registry hack and it did allow me to install 1.3.6h successfully - after renaming the old install directory of course. Unfortunately I still have the same issue as before. I also tried installing 1.3.6h over the top of the old install as well so that it carried across all my snapins with the same unsuccessful result.
Currently any user password resets are being done via iManager, which by the way I still have to figure out how to assign roles etc to myself, using an admin user account which is not overly desireable. Any major changes are still being done through ConsoleOne with my dual booted XP install which seems perfectly happy.
Being completely aware of how annoying it is to hear someone b*tch and moan about and issue and not offer any solutions I would offer my services/suggestions as a long time admin for a potential remodeling of iManager to a much more usable and admin friendly interface however I have no idea either who to talk to or whether they would listen.
Anyway - again I appreciate your response and if anything else comes to mind please let me know!

  • ConsoleOne on Windows 7 GW client 802 TopDown Rebuild issue

Does anyone seen this issue before? Recently (3 months ago) we have migrated to GW 8. We are using Windows 7 64 bit and consoleOne 1.3.6h.
We have done topdown rebuild on all Domains and PO's. While logged in to ConsoleOne >Tools>Groupwise System Operations> Pending transactions. It does shows me 3-5 domains in "Modify" operations.
We checked the DB and rebuild agian and it shows same. Can't add or change password for the objects in consoleone too.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems no one installed such configuration and never had any issue. Please let me know what to do in case if you resolve this in future...:-)

  • Missing Volume in NSM

Hey everyone. We recently did an upgrade of NSM 2.5 to 3.0.2.70 and one of our volumes is not showing up in the storage resource list. I've attempted running a Discover and a Rebuild through the NSMAdmin interface, but it cannot detect this particular volume. I suspect that it may be the volume itself that is the issue, since it's the only one. But it doesn't seem to have any obvious problems as it is currently holding student home directories and is accessible through ConsoleOne and Windows Explorer. Does anyone know what NSM looks for when it's discovering volumes so that I can looks for something specific or perhaps a way to manually add the volume to NSM?
    Thanks, Seth

Can you check your NSM Engine logs, to find if the engine is reporting
    "invalid namespace"?

  • GW801 Primary Domain Netware to OES migration failure

I have started migrating my GroupWise from NetWare to OES. I have migrated a small post office to a server with no problems. I have created a new domain and webaccess on another OES server. My problem came when trying to migrate my primary domain from NetWare to OES. I used the migration utility from the same NetWare server and to the same OES server the small post office I migrated earlier. The migration utility ran without errors. I manually changed the IP's in the Domain and Link configuration, and also I have a startup MTP in our main post office to the primary domain which I changed (I needed this when running on the NetWare Cluster). I ran a database recover DB before and after the migration. All links were green but no traffic from post office to migrated domain or gwia domain to primary domain, queues were filling up. I was running out of time so had to revert back to the NetWare server. I changed the IP's in the Domain object and Links, and MTP on PO, ran DB recover again. Now it wouldn't work on the NetWare server. Luckily I ran a DBCOPY to another source before migrating. I copied over top the domain directory and that saved me.
    Any ideas???
I'm running OES with NSS and long name support because I didn't want to deal with administration compatibility issues. I didn't have any problems using my workstation ConsoleOne for the small post office and new webaccess domain. But should I have been using ConsoleOne on the OES server?
On the NetWare server I had in the startup files "Remote Connections" user and password. These are NLM settings and error out when using them on OES. Do I still need a "Remote Connections" user for OES?
If I'm using long name space on the NSS volume do I have to worry about case sensitivity? I'll just copy the files over manually.
    Unrelated
The default agent file and log locations are in /opt and /var. I would prefer to have these on my NSS volume. Is this good practice for OES?

kjhurni, thanks for your response. I hope this reply looks correct. I'm reply via my GroupWise Client. For some reason I have a problem with replying via the browser.
I figured the agents would have to stay put if I didn't want to deal with update issues in the future. I think I'll move my logs.
I used the GroupWise Migration utility. Actually I tried again last night with no luck again. The link configuration changes I know that the PO is trying to connect. Here is part of the log file.
    06:32:36 094 MTP: GW HCH: Unable to open connection [8925]. Address = 10.0.59.210, Port = 7100
The Primary Domain thinks all is well when looking at the screen. Because it shows all PO's and Domains open. The Secondary Domain shows Primary is down.
I have been using the Migration utility because of the case issues. Which when I tried Dbcopy it didn't seem to change the files to lower case. I think I figured this out and that I need to have Unix name space running and not long. Otherwise it won't make it lowercase.
I just have a Training PO on this server, no MTA.
Do you think I should add secondary IP addresses for POA and MTA agents on the same server?
I do use odd ports for my secondary MTA's because they still run on a NetWare cluster.
Yes, I'm using OES/NSS and ConsoleOne on Windows. I have many administrators that I didn't want to educate, that's why I didn't go SLES.
This is my plan for my third try.
Change the volume name space to unix on destination server.
Make normal dbcopy on original server (This is what saved me the last two times).
Change ConsoleOne Domain and MTA paths.
    Stop MTA
Use DBCOPY -m (it will probably work now that I'm using unix name space).
Delete mslocal, wpcsin and wpcsout folders.
    Start MTA
Check Links and change If needed.
If I cannot get it to work. Perform a top down rebuild.
    What do you think?

NSS is fine, but you can't really change the location of the agent
files. Log files, yes, but the agents and startup files are going to be
in the /opt/novell/groupwise/agents/bin and /share directories
    Anyway, back to your question
You used which migration utility? the OES Miggui or the groupwise
    migration utility?
I personally just do a dbcopy if it's an MTA as it'll do everything I
    Need it to do.
On the destination OES2 server, you mentioned you had a PO on it. Did
you also have another MTA on that as well?
The only time I've seen issues is when you have multiple agents on
    OES2. At that point you'll need to use dedicated IP's (there's a
problem it seems where Groupwise doesn't pay attention to the "bind to
specific" IP if it's running on Linux/OES2).
Also, I've had an issue where the stupid MTA had a "bad" configuration
(odd port # leftover from WAY back when) and no amount of rebuilding
would fix it. I ended up having to manually edit the startup file to
force it to use the configured IP and Port.
Then I stopped/started the MTA and it stayed loaded. Then I
stopped/started the POA and it loaded.
Then a few minutes it got communication to each other and seemed to
behave properly from that point on.
I am assuming that you are using NSS on your OES2 server and using
ConsoleOne on a Windows machine (as opposed to running on the actual
    OES2 server itself).

  • Windows 7 and ConsoleOne for GroupWise

    Scenario: GroupWise 703 on NetWare, ConsoleOne from GW 8 SP1 w/ GW 703 snapins, Windows 7 64bit w/ Novell client 2 sp1
    Problem: When you connect to a domain in the GroupWise view, that wpdomain.db is opened on that server and does not show "locked". {This is the same as in XP} When you make a change to the GroupWise object, the change does not complete. In ConsoleOne Tools/GroupWise System Operations/Pending operations there is a pending op. If you try Retry, undo, etc you get a timeout hang - get a cup of coffee and come back. If you go to the server and clear the Win7 user, the user reconnects IMMEDIATELY but the wpdomain.db is no longer open. You can now retry the pending and it will process. {If I clear an XP user, the user stays cleared until that user does something on the server}
If you forget to "unlock - clear" the Win7 user, any/all other changes made by any ConsoleOne connected to that domain will be incomplete and in the pending list. Once you have cleared the Win7 user, you can "retry" each pending op and they will process.
Since the ONLY way to manage GroupWise is with ConsoleOne, Is there a reliable way to run it on Win7 or should I stay with XP?

You'll want to use the GW8 snapins, not the GW7 snapins. I doubt the
GW7 snapins have been tested with the new C1 included with GW8 on Win7.

You could always use XP Mode... that's what I do rather than run it on
    Win7 natively.

  • ConsoleOne work-a-like for adminning Windows/AD

I hope the mods won't smite me for asking this here. I've asked over at SpiceWorks, but apparently that's mostly Windows and Linux admins who have no real idea of what "elegance" is.
My question: does anyone know of a tool for administering Windows/AD that can do as much (and as well) as ConsoleOne did for Netware/eDirectory? After 10+ years of using it, I've grown quite fond of the simple tree interface that C1 has, and the fact that I can do almost anything necessary in my eDirectory with it. I really miss that power with our new fire-breathing Windows Server2012 boxes. I haven't yet found anything similar for Windows, and was hoping that someone here might have a pointer, or at least tell me it's a fool's quest.
    Thanks,

I never thought I'd see the day that someone wanted something
ConsoleOne-like for administering Windows/AD especially since it's been
deprecated by Novell in favour of iManager and other admin tools/interfaces.
Windows servers are managed via Microsoft Management Console (MMC) - see
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc709659.aspx for information
about MMC 3.0 available with Windows Server 2012.
Of course if you hooked your Windows Servers up to Novell eDirectory via
Domain Service for Windows you could then use Novell's management tools
to administer the AD-side of things!

  • My consoleone is no longer working with groupwise

    Hello
Somehow I screwed up my consoleone. It is GroupWise 7.0.3 and running on SUSE Linux 10.1 . Now when I select domain, the domain databases come up but none of the GroupWise options are available and it is just showing the standard consoleone info.
I have uninstalled it, reininstalled it and put the snapins back in but no avail. Any thoughts will be appreciated.
    Chris T.

In addition to jmarton's comment. You need to go through the process of setting up the Console One mount directory where all your GroupWise MTA and POA files have been mounted for access by NCO. Unlike NCO on Windows, NCO on Linux has no idea about UNC paths. So you need to create the exepected set of mount points for NCO so it can access them. Without these, it will be as if you have no domains.... But if you have NO groupwise menu options, including Create New GW System, etc. That does point at the plugins as being the issue.
You can look in the About-->Plugins IIRC to see if they are showing up. You can start NCO with debugging to see if it struggles, and where. I believe the NCO startup options would be --debug --windowout [ --showhiddenobjects ] or some combination thereof.

  • Unable to Configure Database in ConsoleOne

    PROBLEM
I can navigate to Tools->Zenworks Inventory->Configure Database, browse to
and select {server_name}_invDatabase. However, when I click OK the mouse
pointer just turns into an hourglass. The window wont close and accept
the change. You end up clicking Cancel with the hourglass to close the
window. You can right click on the {server_name}_invDatabase object in
eDir and choose Zenworks Inventory->Configure DB but when you attempt to do
a query or something a window pops up prompting you to first configure your
    database.
    SYSTEM
    Netware 6.5 SP5.
ConsoleOne 1.3.6e with Zenworks 6.5.2 snapins (after upgrade, see below)
We were running Zenworks for Desktops 4 until I upgraded to Zenworks 6.5
SP1 about a year to year and a half ago. Some time after that the
Inventory functionality stopped. Im now trying to fix it.
    ATTEMPTS TO FIX
    1. I first applied Support Pack 2 for Zenworks 6.5. That didnt fix my
    problem.
    2. I then tried reinstalling the Inventory Service off the Zenworks 6.5
with SP1 CD, starting the Inventory service, and then reapplying SP2. That
    didnt fix it.
    3. I have followed the steps in Novell TID # 10097151. I actually had been
wondering which object was the correct one, if it was Inventory
    Service_{server_name} or {server_name}_ZenInvService. After following
these steps I am seeing computers getting inventoried on the Inventory
Service console screen. That wasnt happening before. So this fixed one
of my problems but not all of them.
    4. I then followed the steps in Novell TID #10097366. I confirmed the
usernames were set as shown and retyped the passwords. I even restarted
the Sybase (ASA) and Zen Inventory services at the console but that didnt
    fix it.
    5. I found this thread
    (http://groups.google.com/group/novel...b931657601b01a)
in which other users were dealing with the same problem. I found an older
copy of InventorySnapins.jar as specified and tried it but that didnt fix it.
What can I try next? I really want to use Zenworks to hunt for old apps on
my network that were not using anymore.
And in a side note, where *do* you configure Zenworks to scan a workstation
for applications? The software scan tab of the workstation inventory
policy has a footnote saying these settings only apply to ZfD 3.2, 4, and
4.01. I checked the ZfD 6.5 SP2 manual and it says about the same thing
verbatim. However, neither one includes a helpful sentence telling you
*where* to set this if you are using Zenworks 6.5 or even referring to a
different chapter or section of the manual. Does Zenworks just assume that
if you want to inventory the hardware that you want the software
inventoried as well and just do it automatically?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Matthew

I see. It seems there was a change in assumptions when Novell moved from
Zenworks 4 to 6.5. Previously it seems there was the assumption that since
desktop computers weren't that powerful it might overwhelm them to scan for
both hardware and software. Therefore, these options were put next to each
other so you could choose. In Zenworks 6.5 the assumption is that, since
client computers have become more powerful, if you're scanning the client
hardware you're going to want to scan the software as well. Therefore they
took away the use of the software tab and made it less obvious on how to
    disable scanning.
Everything seems to be working for me now on Zenworks Inventory. It's been
inventorying for about 48 hours now and has updated most of my stale
records. I want to thank Shaun for all the posts he replies to on the
Zenworks newsgroups. I've seen his replies all over the place as I was
searching through Google Groups trying to fix this and they helped me fix my
    problems.

  • New GWIA on Linux - ConsoleOne does not show all GWIA tabs

    Hi,
Last night I moved a POA and MTA to a new Linux server (SLES 11 sp1 on VMWare), which are running fine. I then had to install the GWIA to this server so I deleted the old GWIA object (which was running on Windows) and then ran the install for the GWIA on Linux. The GWIA agent runs on Linux now - at least according to the monitor on port 9850, but in Consoleone I do not have all the normal tabs associated with the GWIA object - just the "Groupwise" tab. All snap-ins, of course, are there because I can manage all other GW objects without a problem. Any clues? Thanks!
    Don

No, no, no. Mapping a drive letter is not the solution. In fact, it fixed itself after apparently running an update process at night. Everything is on the Linux server w/Linux paths in C1 - don't need any stinking drive letter mappings running C1 from the Linux console.

  • Move to Windows Server 2008 R2

I am testing the GroupWise migration from NetWare 6.5 SP8 to Windows Server
2008 R2. I have copied the domain and post office directories to the Windows
Server. The parent directory for both is a windows share. I ran the agent
installation pointing to the new directories. I said to install as a
service. I modified the POA and MTA objects to point to the new IP address
and Database Platform for the Windows Server. I modified the Domain and Post
Office objects to reflect the new directory path (using UNC). I go into
Services on the Windows Server and attempt to start the MTA and POA. Both
error out with error code 1053: The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion. This is a pretty standard MS error.
However, according to MS that error is generated after some time (like 30
seconds) that the service failed to load. In my case it comes back right
away. What could I be missing?
In ConsoleOne on an XP machine I attempted to change the domain database
path for connecting to the GroupWise system and it says the path is not
valid. After I mapped a drive to the windows share it let me specify the UNC
    path and I was in.
I prefer to run the agents as a service vs. as an application. I double
checked the startup files on the windows server and the /home switch does
reflect the correct path. The MTA file also shows the correct "service name"
for windows. BTW, the group Everyone has FC to both the share and the parent
    NTFS directory.
    Ideas?

  • Novell Zenworks Application Window is empty

The ZENworks "Application Window" on my Windows XP SP3 desktop computer is empty. Only the "[All]" node is displayed. In other words, there are no Novell-delivered Applications showing up in the "Application Window". So I cannot see the list of the applications that I could manually deliver to my computer. The strange thing is that IT support is able to deliver ZEN applications and patches to my desktop. They are also able to wake up my computer or establish remore desktop connection to my computer via ConsoleOne or other means.
Also when I click the Application Window's menu bar items (File, Edit, View, Help), they have no options available under them.
Furthermore, when I go to the "Application Explorer Properties" and click on the "More" button in order to go to "More About Application Launcher" box, the "Login Information" subwindow is empty while the "File Information" subwindow is full; that is, it has the File Names and their Versions displayed in it.
    The Zenworks's version is 7.0.1.x.
Please help me resolve this issue.
    Thank you.

Thanks, Shaun for your response. I'm new to this forum, so I don't know what "TID 3546801" means.
However, I'm going to give you the following file versions which may help:
    NalAgent: 7.0.1.12
    NalWin or NalWin32: 7.0.1.0

  • ZRm files in the windows\temp directory?

We use ConsoleOne on a Citrix server (rather than have to constantly mess with installing and updating on many pc's) for our helpdesk.
I'm seeing TONS of files in their windows\temp directory that are:
    ZRmrandomnumber files
    Like:
    ZRm13_12_29
    or
    ZRm15_41_45
I am GUESSING that these are ZEN Remote management files, but I'm unable to find anything on Novell's KB or documentation about what these are and what they are used for.

I install Zenagent 7.0.1.4 on a laptop running Windows 7 64. It seems to install fine but upon login I do not get any desktop icons and does not create a workstation object in ConsoleOne.
    Any Ideas?

I appreciate that their is no support but was hoping that someone might come across this issue and resolved it. I have installed it on Win7 32bit a few times and it works fine.
    Thanks
