Consolidated family music library... Help with Implications

Here's our setup
Two family members: husband/wife
Each member with one iPod and one ipad
Each member has own apple ID
Each member has own iTunes user on same computer
Each has its own, separate iTunes music library
Both use husband's apple ID to pay for purchases
I would like to consolidate both music libraries into one and place it in public folder on a NAS server.
I think I know how to do this as there are numerous posts and knowledge base articles, but have one important question: assume I have successfully merged both libraries and now have both iTunes users pointing towards the same music library. Now, say my wife makes a song purchase in either her iPhone or here iTunes user in the PC... Will that song automatically appear in my iTunes library the next time I open iTunes on my user?
I have not done this delicate merge procedure because I have not completely understood the implications of the merge. Any comments will be appreciated.

Locate the iTunes library, move it to another location, and then drag it into the open iTunes window. Playlists and other metadata will be erased.

  • Can I share music library's with different apple ID accounts

I would like to share music library's with my daughter. However, she has a differet User ID then myself. Is this still possible?
So far I have set up home sharing and auhorized her computer.
I can see and play the music in her library.
However, I am not able to copy any of her purchased music into my library.

It's ok to share the same AppleID for iTunes.  Use Separate ID's for iCloud, iMessage, and Facetime.

  • Can I use Time Capsule 1TB as an external hard drive tos tore my music library(but with cable connection, not WI-FI)

Can I use my Time Capsule 1TB as an external hard drive to store my music library but with a cable connection(Ethernet or USB) and not Wi-Fi.

    Yes, with the following warnings.
    1. A 1TB TC is a Gen3 or earlier and can die at a moments notice.. So backup is essential.
    2. A Gen1 or 2 is slow.. even over ethernet they were processor bound and so transfer speeds are not great.. a USB2 plugged into the computer will be faster. Gen3 is about 50% better as the processor was upgraded by 50% speed.
    3. TC has no built in backup.. TM cannot backup network drives.
    4. TC is designed to spin up slowly and spin down quickly.. you will have issues with itunes constantly losing the library.
    5. You cannot use USB to the TC.. it is a network drive. If you want to use USB directly on the computer buy a USB drive.. but buy as fast a drive as your Mac supports.. Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2
USB3 is cheap and very good.. but the port is only from 2012 so check your Mac specs.
Thunderbolt whilst being super fantastic and around since 2011, has a bank account clearing price although there are Thunderbolt to esata converters.. for around $160. esata falls between usb3 and fw800.
FW800 from WD is no better than USB2 but other brands it can be twice the speed of usb2.
USB2 is the worst. But still faster than a TC.

  • Lost music library - help

I had to clean up my registry due to a virus. I backed up my files but I need to reinstall ITunes. I don't know where my music library is or how I can retrieve it. Can I somehow get it back by copying the music from my Ipod device back into a newly installed ITunes?

Your iTunes library should still be in <User's Music>\iTunes where it was before you started. What happens if you start iTunes now? Does it appear with an empty library or ask questions about scanning for media as if it had just been installed? Did the clean up process involve creating a new profile?
If your library still exists on your computer it will be best to get that working again instead of attempting the more difficult task of extracting your media from your device.

  • IPad music library inconsistent with iTunes Library

I recently sync my iPad mini 3 with my iTunes library, I noticed the music is not consistent with my iTunes library
I checked by Artist, and for example, when I checked Aerosmith, in my ipad the "Pump" album is not displaying under artist, is showing as unknown artist, and in my itunes library is correct.
the ipad mini 3 has 128 GB so it has enough storage for all my music and the setup is to sync the entire library, I only have 50+ GB of music
    Anybody experiencing the same issue?

I had a similar issue. Not sure about what caused the problem, but I think it was something related to folder localizations. When I upgraded to iTunes 9, I changed OS X language from English to my native. Then I noticed almost half of my library was filled with broken links . I checked out iTunes Library.xml file and found that some of the folder names were in English in that file and the real location was my native language localized folder. I'm not sure had NTFS-3g something to do with that bug (my library was on NTFS-3g partition). I got rid off it recently because it caused more problems than solved them.

  • Disorganized library - help with how to clean up?

    Hi guys,
My library is an absolute mess. I have up to five duplicates of a given file, each of which are somehow at different sizes, and all my 50GB of files are spread out over somewhere between 4-6 huge and horrendously disorganized primary folders. Its mostly the result of 3 years of general disorganization, and more so somehow from importing and exporting libraries back and forth between LR and Aperture when I had no idea what I was doing with either program. Then I cant make stacks or get much done at all because all these images are in totally different folders!
But, I have a free external hard drive that I can export and import back and forth to in order to get this mess under control. The question is, how should I do it? How do I export my entire library correctly?
I dont yet know the difference between catalogs, libraries, etc. It seems as though I should export my library to the other hard drive as copied files, erase the original ones, and then re-import the copied files from the hard drive, while making sure it doesnt import thumbnails, suspected duplicates, etc. but Im not confident enough with the program to do so yet!
If anyone could guide me a bit, Id very much appreciate.
    Thanks!
    Alec

    Alec-
You're not alone! Many of us have had to, or are in the middle of, organizing ourselves! It's a DAM headache! DAM, by the way, referring to Digital Asset Management, a term you might want to research.
I would start by backing up and asking yourself how do you want your system to look in the long term: how you want your library structured, and, importantly, how you want your library backed up. If you can come up with a good plan, there's nothing wrong with starting "from scratch", creating a new structure and moving your files into that new structure. While you're at it, create a backup strategy using at the minimum an external hard drive and DVD's so that as you populate your system you also protect your files from a system crash. Hard drives and DVD burners are cheap these days, compared to losing ~50GB of images!
People take different approaches to structuring their file systems and their libraries: there is not a "best" way. The important thing to me is to set up my folders in a way that I can eliminate guess work as much as possible. But as I do this I also make plenty use of Lightroom's collections and keywords. My pictures get cross-referenced in this way so that I can find them from several directions.
With Lightroom, you can export and re-import, or you can move files and folders from one location or disk to another. With your free hard drive, once you settle on a long-term file structure, you need a way to "point" LR to your new drive: try right-clicking on an existing folder and choosing Show in Explorer, then cutting and pasting it into the new drive and file system. When you close the explorer the folder in LR should show up in red as missing; you then right-click the folder and choose the option to locate the missing folder, then navigate to your new location.
Lightroom doesn't have a way of managing duplicates. If you try to import a duplicate it by default declines, although you can tell it to show them in the library anyway. If you have duplicates on your system you have to come up with your own method of finding them and dealing with them. If you have edited versions of a file, though, Lightroom can manage them.
    Hope some of this helps,
    Tony

  • Merge SAP GTS Library ("Help") with "ERP Library"

    Hi all
I downloaded the sap global trade service library (means the sap-help).
Because my gts system is on the same system like my ERP (on a different client) I need to merge the sap-help library of the erp system with the sap help library of the gts.
Now I copied all .chm files from the gts library directory to the ".chm-folder" of my erp system. Now I have to update the "index"  (00000001.chm) so that the GTS-part of the documentation is listed in the first page.
Does anyone has an idea how that could work?
    Thanks and regards
    Marco

NOTE: With SAP NetWeaver AS 7.0 something really important changed! The cryptographic toolkit is now part of the SAP NetWeaver AS Java and does not have to be installed afterwards. In earlier versions the cryptographic toolkit had to be downloaded on the SAP Service Marketplace due to some export and import control regulations. Area where the cryptographic software download can be found. Here is the path: http://service.sap.com/swdc Download ->SAP Cryptographic Software
WIth that i have now other question.
    a. How can i check if I have or i donu00B4t have SAP crytographic in my system( I guess that i donu00B4t have because in D:\usr\sap\QN2\SYS\exe\nuc\NTAMD64 i dont find any executables for sap cryptographi.) but iu00B4m not sure..

  • I think I just lost my whole music library, help!

Hello everyone! First off, i'm in my late 60's and have worked in maual labor my entire life. I'm really trying hard to increase my knowledge of technical devices. I own a classic iPod, 80GB, model #MB029LL and version 1.1.2 PC. I'm also running windows on my computer. (Gateway)  4+ years ago, I spent weeks adding over 2,000 songs to my iPod, from CD's. Shortly after, major and limiting health problems occurred and my iPod sat in a drawer for 3 years. During that time, my computer fried and the hard drive was toast. Health is much better now, and we have a new computer. So all my songs were on my iPod and i was able to connect it to iTunes. I was going to get help via apple support but they wanted $29. Being the stubborn man I am, I decided that i could figure out how to transfer all my songs from my iPod to my iTunes account. I back up my iPhone to a iTunes page so i thought this was the correct site. I tried to transfer the songs to iTunes and i ended up getting rid of all the songs. I'm completely dumbfounded and I'm ready to accept help. I really hope I haven't lost everything.
So my question is, is there a way to retrieve all 2000+ songs and put it back on my iPod and the iTunes account? I appreciate anyone's suggestions in this matter. I'm no spring chicken, but I desperately want to understand and keep learning.
    Thanks in advance,
    philipfromwichita

  • ITunes music library file, yet again...

    I apologize for this advance:
About every other post on this discussion board relates to how people are missing their music, playlists, etc. and I roll my eyes to read them. Now I am one of them.
Two days ago, I consolidated my music on my external drive, fixing a longstanding problem with syncing my iPod. For good measure, I figured I would make a copy of the iTunes Music Library file to have a backup. I am almost sure I copied it, but I may have MOVED it from the Music folder on the Mac (despite how none of my music was stored in that location). When I next opened iTunes, everything was reset: no music, no playlists. I have attempted SEVERAL times since then to import the backup file; my playlists have returned, but my ratings and the last played category are empty. How do I restore this information?
Know also that I had retitled my music library within iTunes to "The Jam." When I import the .xml, does it need to be named "The Jam" or "iTunes Music Library" or what? Does it need to be in the Music folder on my HD? with the actual music files on the external drive?
Any help would be appreciated (and eye rolling, too).
    Grant

    Also, a corollary:
Out of frustration, I imported the backup of my library into iTunes, but did it about 20 times changing the options a little each time in an attempt to restore the rating/play count/last played information (it didn't work). As a result, I have 20 copies of each playlist, so many that it has slowed everything down to the point that it takes around a minute with the spinning beach ball of death to delete EACH playlist. Is there a way I can start from scratch? I already followed the instructions on this discussion board about reinstalling iTunes...I did, deleted my copy, downloaded a new one, and the new iTunes came up with the exact same playlist configuration (despite my replacement of the iTunes music library file with the desired file).
Just know that I have spent days of my life amassing the information I now seek to reclaim and if a proposed solution requires that I reset and reinstall iTunes, I would be more than willing to go through with it.

  • Refreshing music library DONT works

hi, i am using 5730xm i just brought it 4 days ago.
it works perfectly well when i transfer songs from my computer to the phone, however when i refresh the music library, the songs WILL NOT be updated. i used the search function on the phone and search for the songs, they are there but i dont know where is it located at. because i cant find it in the music library.
    helps are appreciated. thanks please.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

have you tried copying the songs directly to the root folder of the memory card on your phone via the Mass Storage connection mode. then try refreshing the music library. i haven't had any problems doing it that way at all.
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • Consolidating itunes media library-how to shorten file names or how to find the file that is creating the problem?

Hi I've switched to Mac for six months now, so is still new to mac and I am using my old 1TB windows PC side by side for my music collection. Now I have seen the posts already in apple community about consolidating itunes music library but could not get the proper way of doing it. My system and itunes is also saying 'file name is too long' and it stops but the questin is how do I know which file is creating the problem and how do I shorten it?
If anybody can answer I'll be obliged to him/her, because its my 6/7 years of music collection stuck in an old pc. Thanks in advance.

By 'it stops' I meant the consolidation process in itunes stops.

Are you using the same ID for homesharing on all devices.
By the way shared libraries don't show up under either 'Music' or 'Libraries'.
