Consolidated Library, now what?

I reformatted my hard drive after consolidating my library, now I want to put the music back, and am having trouble. I tried importing, then adding files, and it's a flipping hassle. Anyone know how to do this? Do I have to manually add each file from every artist from every folder? I can see the songs that I consolidated, now just getting them to the Itunes library...oh, and I don't know what I did, but I was somehow able to copy over those playlists, like 90's and recently played, ect. So those are in my library now, but that's it. Thanks!

I swear I tried that already, but for some reason it just worked. Thank you!

  • Manually deleted duplicates, corrupted library, now what?

I'm new to Mac. I imported photos into iPhoto, played with iPhoto for a while, and decided for a variety of reasons - including the fact that I ended up with a TON of duplicates - to install Picasa and use Picasa to manage my photos.
I used Picasa to identify, and then manually delete photos. I identified folders that contained duplicates and deleted them. They're still in the trash.
Then, I realized that I was better off sticking to iPhoto. So - in the Photo display, all of the photos are still there, but attempting to zoom into them reveals a black screen with a "!"
So, how do I get out of this mess? It seems that I can rebuild the library, but what should I do about the folders that I dragged into the trash?
I'm trying to figure out how to get myself out of this mess...

To delete an Event, delete or move all the pics within it. You can merge Events simply by dragging one to another.
FWIW here’s a canned answer I use when folks are thinking about organising their photos. Maybe something will strike an idea for you.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 25k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • [SOLVED][Code::Blocks]Installed needed library, now what?

    Hi ARCH-ers,
Today I've got IMO quite easy question but which I cannot overcome by myself - I want to start making some OpenGL stuff using GLFW in Code::Blocks enviroment. I've installed glfw package from official ARCH repositiories. But when I choose GLFW Project in Code::Blocks it asks me to point GLFW location. So now my question is : where it is? Where had this package been installed? Or maybe I'm missing some important puzzle in this whole thing.
I've also googled out this page http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?ti … lling_GLFW but this zip file seems to lack in Linux make files.

@Raynman Thanks, 'pacman -Ql <name>' is what I was asking for.
But unfortunately things have now turned out to be more complex than I thought. The way pacman have installed it seems not to be matching Code::Blocks needs - files are scattered all around dirrefent directiores while it need a proper arrangement.
    Output of 'pacman -Ql glfw':
    glfw /usr/
    glfw /usr/include/
    glfw /usr/include/GLFW/
    glfw /usr/include/GLFW/glfw3.h
    glfw /usr/include/GLFW/glfw3native.h
    glfw /usr/lib/
    glfw /usr/lib/cmake/
    glfw /usr/lib/cmake/glfw/
    glfw /usr/lib/cmake/glfw/glfwConfig.cmake
    glfw /usr/lib/cmake/glfw/glfwConfigVersion.cmake
    glfw /usr/lib/cmake/glfw/glfwTargets-noconfig.cmake
    glfw /usr/lib/cmake/glfw/glfwTargets.cmake
    glfw /usr/lib/libglfw.so
    glfw /usr/lib/libglfw.so.3
    glfw /usr/lib/libglfw.so.3.0
    glfw /usr/lib/pkgconfig/
    glfw /usr/lib/pkgconfig/glfw3.pc
    glfw /usr/share/
    glfw /usr/share/licenses/
    glfw /usr/share/licenses/glfw/
    glfw /usr/share/licenses/glfw/COPYING
I tried pointing different directions but only /usr/include/GLFW have required glfw3.h file. and nonetheless Code::Blocks shows an error like this:
The path you entered seems valid, but the wizard can't locate the include directory. The wizard cannot continue.
Do anyone know Code::Blocks well enough to point me out a solution?
    EDIT:
@progandy Didn't noticed your post. Anyway I'll try the possible solution as you described.

  • Imported iPhoto library now what?

Probably a real newbie question.... After importing my iphoto library and keeping files in original location, I'm confused how to get new images into Aperture without manually selecting each file. I still use iphoto to upload new images/videos, but it looks like if I try importing my iphoto library again it will create another duplicate library of all my files (even if I check the "do not import duplicates" box). Is there an easy way of having Aperture 3 import files as new ones are placed in iphoto? Or do I now need to start having Aperture manage my files?
    Thank you!

You select one or the other. Do not use both. The only exception is for some publication projects which are only available in one or the other, in which case you would export your edited images and import them just for that project.

Iphoto crashes so tried the Alt start with new library and that worked. So now what? How to I get back to my pictures.

That shows you that iPhoto is working correctly and whatever issue you are having is based in your original library.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • TS1967 When trying to recover a lost iTunes library file, the programme moved all the normal contents of iTunes folder to the desktop. Now what must I do?

When trying to recover a lost iTunes library file, the programme moved all the normal contents of iTunes folder to the desktop. Now what must I do? There is no iTunes Library.itl file. On the desktop it is labelled iTunes Library.xml. Several others files have appeared there too including iTunes Music Library.xml
Before I can use the programme is it necessary to take another step?
    Thanks for advice.

Don't worry. I'm all for caution. I guess I should have asked a little more about what steps you took while trying to recover your lost library?
The permissions thing may be a red herring, but if there is a problem with file access rights to the designated media folder iTunes has been known to place files on the desktop instead since it can access this location. The most common cause for such problems is working with a folder on an NTFS drive via a differnt account or on a different computer. In the normal course of events folders created inside user profiles have limited rights for other users.
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Normally the iTunes folder will be created at <User's Music>\iTunes with the media folder inside it. The library files should all appear in the same place so your comment about there not being an iTunes Library.itl file is confusing. Is it just the case that the .itl extension is hidden? The two .xml files makes sense from the above and indicates that the active library is not in <User's Music>\iTunes, but you have a recovered file from when it was.
If, in fact, the situation is that your desktop is acting as the main iTunes folder, and contains the library file, Album Artwork, iTunes Media and (optionally) Previous iTunes Libraries folders, with all other content being inside the iTunes Media folder, then it should be relativly easy to rearrange your into the correct shape and move them to the correct location.
If things are more complex, with something other than a library folder containing a media folder, then reestablishing the normal order is more complicated. The iTunes consolidate function is used to bring copies of files stored outside of the media folder into the media folder. It may sometimes be needed as part of the process of tidying up, however it leaves behind originals. There are circumstances where there isn't room for two complete sets of the media files on the same drive which is why I suggested the script might be useful as it produces the same results for the library without leaving the originals for manual clear up.
I think before you do anything however, we should get a clearer picture of exactly what is where. Could you perhaps take a screenshot of the desktop and post it here? Take a look at this post on making a split library portable. The same techniques I outline there can be used to lick your library into shape, it is just a question of working out which to use in which order for the best effect.

  • I had Snow Leopard and upgraded to Mavericks, and did the various up-grades.  Today when I went to open iPhoto, I got a message "iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it".  Now what?

I had Snow Leopard, and up-graded to Mavericks, and did the various up-grades in iPhoto to become compatible with
Maverick.  Today, when I tried to open iPhoto I got this message: "iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do
not have permission to make chages to it".  Now what?  I can't access my iPhoto Library.

First open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:'
Look for the file named iPhotoLock.data and move it to the Trash in the Dock. Launch iPhoto and see if that helped.
If not Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Moving my iTunes library - So now what do I do???

I store my music on a Seagate 250GB drive which is now full, so I needed to move my library to my new Seagate 1T external drive. I created a new library [changed library] on the 1T with a few songs from my hard drive, and then used iTunes "add to library' to put library from the 250 GB to the 1T. And I went to bed because it would take a while.
When I woke up, iTunes was frozen about half way through the add, the 250GB library had disappeared, and all the copied folders on the 1T were empty. Plus iTunes couldn't open the library because it was 'locked'. And so I restarted and the result is the 250 GB library is intact, and the 1T has about half the songs copied on to it, and iTunes is working again.
So now what do I do?
    1. It would take forever to figure out which folders were not copied, select them, and add them. [it's not like it started with the A's and finished with R's]
    2. It would take forever to try adding the 250GB library again, hope it doesn't freeze, and then delete the duplicates.
    3. So I am thinking I need to delete the 1/2 library on the 1T, and try adding the 250Gb library again.
Or ................ is there some way to do an add/copy and have iTunes not copy the dulicates ie the ones that are already on the 1T.
Or ............. is there something else I should consider.
    thanks

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Lost itunes library..what to do now?

Ok I am very confused! I have an ipod mini, and have my itunes library on my computer. Well something is wrong w/ my computer. Now my question is. Can I login into itunes from another computer or something to still get music and stuff? Or do I have to wait until I get my computer working again and find my itunes on there.
Or if I can't get my old itunes library back, what should i do from here? I have ALL of my songs that were in my library on my IPOD, so I dont know what my best bet is. I do not want to loose my songs on my ipod because i paid for alot of them. Please help guide me!

I am experiencing the same problem. My computer crashed and ALL of my songs (over 500!) were deleted and are irretrievable. They are still on my iPod and I know that there is some way to transfer the songs from your iPod to your computer by converting it to a hard disk but I have no idea how to go about doing that. Anyone know?

  • HT1349 "iTunes has stopped working" and I can't get into my library..what do I do now?

When I try to get into my itunes icon, a message comes up saying 'iTunes is not working'.  I am beside myself as I have a lot of musice in this account. I can't get in on my computer (windows 7 professional) & therefore also not on my apple tv.  Now what? It's been working fine until now!!!  And I hate apple phone support! It is non-existent for this!

That looks like a GPU issue (or possibly a display problem, but less likely).  Your best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  They will be able to give you a definitive diagnosis for FREE.  I note that you have a pre-unibody MBP which they may or may not offer to repair, depending upon the age.
    Ciao.

  • I'VE HAD IT WITH iTUNES- Moved library, now "songs cannot be found"

I have HAD IT with itunes. Apple NEEDS TO FIX PROBLEMS RELATING TO ERRORS WHILST MOVING THE MUSIC LIBRARY. "the original file could not be found" seems to be an all too common error.
I'm using snow leopard, and have an external hard-drive, which has my music library stored on it. I plug in the drive whenever I listen to music. The drive had an error and I was forced to copy the entire music folder to a separate drive, format the drive, then move the music folder back.
I kept the path to the music folder the same, the files the same, and even the name of the drive the same. I opened itunes and in 'advanced' I selected the new itunes music folder location. I figured that it would be fine, as everything was the same as before.
    WRONG.
Now, 2/3 of the songs cannot be found when I try and play them. This happens every time I move my library, even when following Apple's step-by-step instructions!!!
I have just clicked "consolidate library" but now I fear that I will have thousands of duplicates, or worse the songs still won't be recognised.
    HELP, PLEASE
    <Edited by Host>

That setting in Advanced doesn't tell iTunes where to find your library, that setting tells iTunes where to put files when you import them. I'm not well versed on the Consolidation function and what that they may have done. I can say that what you should have done was launch iTunes while holding down the option key and navigate to where the library is located is prompted. I suppose you could do that now...but I'm not sure if you might already have dupes from consolidating. If so, you could check for Corral Dupes, a script over at Doug's Scripts, get rid of the dupes, then follow the launch with option key step.

  • SOS consolidating library

i recently moved my itunes library, manually from the itunes folder onto a new hd, just for backup. then, i decided to make the backup my new library to free up space on my other drive, so i consolidated my library to that new location. the previous location shows the librarys size at 150gb, when copied manually to the new location, that folder showed 150gb, the itunes interface(still referencing original location of itunes library) showed the library contained 150gb. following consolidation to the backup location, the new itunes folder (backup location) size is now 300gb, ironically almost exactly double of the librarys previous content. i immediately thought that consolidating had a doubling of file effect, so i started to manually compare the old itunes folder contents with new, they appear to be pretty consistent with just a skim. so, since itunes was now referencing the new itunes folder that contained 300gb, i thought the interface would reflect that., not the case., itunes, referencing the 300gb itunes folder shows 150gb of media. i went back to the original location of the itunes folder thinking i could wipe the backup and rather than manually copy again, i would only make a new folder and consolidate to that and that would probably reduce the space occupied back to the 150gb of space, but since consolidation the itunes library data has changed and when i try to use the old location it tells me that there is no library data associated with that folder..... so, im kind of stuck. the consolidated library works fine, kept all my playlists ratings etc., but now its just eating up double the space., any and all ideas are welcome. sorry so wordy.

what i did is consolidated my library, which moves all music files regardless of location to a new location and creates the necessary files for itunes to move file locations and still keep your playlists, settings etc but to refernece the music in the new location, the library file etc. so what i had to do to get my stuff right again was this
open itunes, hold option> choose library
-navigate to the itunes folder in your home folder rather than the new location you created, when i did this i was able to get back my original itunes library, complete with my playlists, settings etc. hope fully this will work for you as well., if it does this is what i would do next.
get rid of the new library, make a folder of where you will keep all your new itunes files wherever you want, the location obviously has to have the space to handle all of your audio files.
click advanced>consolidate library, navigate to your newly created folder
-this process will copy all music files from different locations to your new location, and update itunes on the change of location but still keeping all of your playlists etc., once this is done make sure that everything is linking to your new location correctly, once this is confirmed you can delete all of the original files to free up that hd space.
to isolate duplicate files, make sure where you want to look is correctly highlighted (music, movies, podcasts etc.)
    click view> show duplicates
-delete what you want, make sure to remove files from the hard drive not just from itunes when prompted. use this sparingly and with caution for obvious reasons.
