Consolidated Network Issues: Something is Just Plain Wrong (or Maybe Right)

I've been following this forum as for the first time since I can remember I am having network problems. Obviously many more people are as well.
I have a MBP running 10.5.1 and an iBook G4 w/10.5, and two identical MacMinis w/10.4.10 and 10.4.11. I usually plug in the MBP and the Mini w/10.4.10 is also wired. The iBook and the Mini w/10.4.11 are strictly wireless. There are also a NAS device, and a Linux server on wires, a Wii, TiVO and occasionally a DS on wireless. There are two Linksys WRT54G's running HyperWRT 2.1b1, a Linksys Vonage router, a D-Link DPR-1260 print server, and we connect to the net via Comcast. Oh yeah, everything has a static IP.
So, anyhow, my wireless, SMB, NFS, Bonjour, LPD, AFP, and almost all other services I regularly use work perfectly fine on all the machines. I've noticed virtually no difference on the machines running 10.5.* in these areas.
My glaring problem is that on either machine running 10.5.* I cannot access some of the web server based functions on my DPR-1260 print server. Loading always chokes on certain pages. It always seems to stall on a particular JavaScript file linked in the header. I have spent far too much time already trying to figure this out so I'm giving up since it doesn't pay the bills. However, I think my experience is worth sharing because it points to some fundamental issue with 10.5.* that I can't nail down.
To answer the obvious questions: Yes, JavaScript is active in the browser(s). This affects every browser. WebKit based, Gecko, Opera, iCab, and I even tried IE 5.2.3 (which otherwise still works as gloriously as ever on 10.5). Now when I disable JavaScript the pages load but of course are useless since most of the functionality is in the JS. I have tried cURL and wget to download the pages and both hang. I have managed to recursively download the whole site using wget and all the files that seem to stall out have the string 400 on it's own line every 20-30 lines. I have also noticed an occasional 100 and 304. Also, all the affected files end with a 0. None of these strings show up when I cleanly download the files. -- Newsflash -- I realized I had not covered all the bases so I did a recursive download with wget on both my Linux box running RH 7.2 and CentOS 5 running under Parallels. Same deal with the number strings showing up in various files. I do not have a Linux machine running X Windows so I cannot test this on a Linux browser with JavaScript. Lynx and links load the pages just fine, as with an OS X browser with JS turned off. And yes, I have checked this through both wired and wireless connections, including turning wireless off on both the machine and the print server and connecting directly (no switch or hub).
I'd say there is a problem with the code on the print server. It's not handling HTTP requests or mime types correctly. Downgrading the print server to an earlier firmware allows access to all the content but does not support the scanning function of my particular MFP.
However... Everything functions just fine with 10.4.10, 10.4.11, booted directly into Win XP on the MBP, running Win XP under Parallels with shared or bridged ethernet, and running Win XP under VMware Fusion using shared networking. Using NAT with Win XP and Fusion results in the same behavior as with 10.5.*. Also, I checked all this out using multiple browsers.
What I have dug into: None of my OS X machines has a sysctl.conf file. It appears to me that the sysctl settings are located in /System/Library/Frameworks/Kernel.framework/Versions/A/Headers/netinet/tcp.h and other related framework headers in the /System/Library/Frameworks/Kernel.framework/Versions/A/Headers/* directories. I compared the 10.4.11 version of tcp.h file to the version in 10.5.1 and found a few differences. In the 10.5.1 version it has this additional definition:

In conclusion it seems, with my problem anyway, either 10.4.* and Win XP are allowing kludgy network requests (or something) to work and, at the kernel level, 10.5 is not. Or perhaps 10.5 has an inherent issue with it's networking implementation.

  • Is JViewport scrollRectToVisible API Javadoc ambigious or just plain wrong?

    I've been working on a JPanel derived class that demonstrates how to position the JViewport of a JScrollPane using JViewport's scrollRectToVisible method. I've got it working, but only after trial & error regarding the scrollRectToVisible's interpretation of the Rectangle input parameter.
    The issue is that the JDK API javadocs gave me the impression that the Rectangle fields "x" and "y" would specify the (x,y) coordinates of the upper right corner in absolute client area coordinates. The impression resulted from past usage of Rectangles where the "x" and "y" fields were always absolute coordinates. But my trial & error revealed that the "x" and"y" fields in the Rectangle are interpreted by scrollRectToVisible as signed relative deltas within the client area, not absolute client area coordinates.
    Here is the javadoc excerpt fom class JViewport: It does not really say how the Rectangle is interpreted...

    I tried it as you suggested, on the JScrollpane instance, not the JScrollpane's JViewport. The results were not what I expected of absolute or relative coordinate systems.You got it wrong, try calling scrollRectToVisible on the component being scrolled i.e. viewport view.

    I entered 5:00 PM and that's what it put in the cell.
    Then I entered 3:50:25 PM and that's what it put in the cell.
    Then I put B2 - C2 in the next cell and I got "0.0483217592592593".
    Not the right thing. And yes, I checked the format to make sure it said "Time", etc...
    I love Numbers, but dear Apple, please fix this...

    I also cannot see a function to convert a real number into a date/time, perhaps with an optional parm to specify a date/time offset.
    Here's a rough idea of the path you need to go down:

    which gives you a leading "0" if the minutes/seconds are less than 10. You need to extend this out for seconds.
    But....
    It all depends on what you are doing.
    Back in my Excel and Appleworks days I found that for reliable data entry it is best to have the minutes and hours specified in SEPARATE cells. I make them nice and narrow with the hours right justified and the minutes left justified.
    Usually this is a start and finish time for employees so I can't take any chances on accuracy when calculating wages.
    As far as I know doing time sheet style calculations has always required your own formulas. But once you have one then just copy it into the other fields.
    I save my favourite formulas in a file by the way.

    Now, you get to Spotlight by swiping down from the home screen, but do not start the swipe at the top of the screen.  Start it in the middle somewhere.

    I can only logon as the register proces ends. Any following (later) attemts to login end with the error message.
    Tried twice - making two new account - same pattern, gets in first time only.
    The printer works - print sent are printed. And do I enter a wrong e.g. password on hpeprintcenter.com I'm promted about the wrong password. But entering the right user and password the above error message appers.

    Are you talking about an app that is available on the printer or are you referencing an app that you download on your computer?

    I will need a little more information in order to help out. What model of printer is it that you own? Are you able to ePrint with the machine when you send emails to it? Have you every been able to successfully download apps to the machine without getting the error message? Do the apps that you download successfully download at any time after that error and later work?

  • Networking issue with Leopard 10.5.2, Arris Touchphone, Netgear WRG614 v4

    I recently upgraded to Leopard 10.5.2 and now having long hang times of 15 seconds (if I connect at all) to internet. It's not a signal issue, AND I have a PC that flies on same wireless network.
    The same time I loaded new OS, Comcast came in a changed out my Motorola SURFboard SB5120 modem for Arris Touchtone Telephony modem. I am still using the Netgear WRG614v4 with the most updated firmware(V5.0_07)
    Of course, I wasn't sure if not being able to connect to internet was a Leopard issue or a networking issue. After many hours of troubleshooting...
    1. MANY hard resets through cable company AND buttons on both modem and cable
    2. Applied all the newest Updates to 10.5.2 which fixed the issue for about 2 hours, then back to crawling
    3. Changed the channel on the Netgear from 11 to 9
    4. Went to Starbucks AND Panera Bread and had fast connectivity even from the parking lot!
    Although I expect some issues to pop up from the new OS, I now believe the connectivity issue is with either the new modem or router. Comcast insists that their firmware is up-to-date and is automatic.
    Should I get a new router? HELP

    I've been on the road and everything is working fine, but now I'm back home and the same issues.
    BUT for some reason, after a day, something switched up and now the mac is on-line and the PC is not. They are definately fighting each other. Even the wireless printer is wacked. Sometimes when I try to print from the mac, it can't connect to the printer. I then either restart the mac or restart the printer, and it goes through.
    The other issue now is that all the lights on the Arris modem are blinking. Comcast is saying something is wrong. They are coming out today. Wonder if I just got a bad modem....

    (If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • IMac running 10.9 not rebooting after network issues

    This is weird, and while I am going through Apple's Knowledgebase steps - so far without success - I thought I'd post here to see if anyone else experienced a similar issue.
    I was having network issues (or what I think/thought were network issues) for about a week. The symptoms looked like high packet loss, i.e. websites would simply not load reliably: sometimes not load at all, sometimes load partially. This started with some smaller websites and eventually it failed to load google and facebook. It took me some time to notice that  other devices on the same WiFi did not have this issue, so yesterday I decided to reboot my iMac. Network diagnostics didn't show any issue and I was able to connect to the WiFi router just fine, just not find any websites, so I thought a reboot may fix it.
    I have not been able to boot it back up since. It stalls at the grey loading screen with Apple logo and a spinning wheel for ever (I've let it sit for hours). Safe boot does not work, and starting in Verbose mode hangs at "executing fsck_hfs" and it doesn't seem to do anything else. I've booted from the install disc (actually a USB drive) and ran Disk Utility from there, but it showed not disk errors at all. It did repair a handful of permissions (I only saw iBooks related stuff and something about etc/apache2/users), apparently successfully, but it's still not booting.
    Disconnecting my external Time Machine drive and unplugging the iMac from my surge protector didn't help, either. I am now creating a new image from the partition just to have an additional backup on top of my Time Machine, and I'm going to try Archive and Install next, which is the next to last step in the Knowledgebase.
    I do have two partitions on the Mac (one 10.9 and the other 10.7), by the way, and booting into the older partition seemed to work right away. It's just that I don't have any use for that other partition right now, it's a leftover from back when I migrated to Mavericks.
    I am baffled how all of this connects together. Network issues, boot up failure without apparent disk issues? Has anyone else seen anything like this?

    I am still working on restoring my iMac with 10.9.
    I've cloned the affected partition. I used Disk Utility and it Restored without apparent unto an external drive. So I tried booting from that drive, but I get the same result as booting from the partition directly. Not a major surprise I guess since this is supposed to be an identical copy.
    I have also created a dmg image out of the partition, and I was able to open that on my MBP without problems! All the files seem to be there. It seems to be something specific with the, uh,  boot sector or, uh, something?
    Next, I booted into Single User mode and ran fsck -fy. The Knowledgebase says it's okay to do it if Safe Mode doesn't work, right? The first time it ran, I got conflicting results. It said both

    **THE VOLUME WAS MODIFIED**
    The Knowledgebase seems to suggest that it should only say one or the other?
    Running it again, it said

    Alas, rebooting it still doesn't work, it continues hanging at the Apple logo.

  • HP 4120 Lync Phone Network issues

    Hello Lync community!
    We have a 2013 deployment running HP 4120 desk phones.  I'd like to see if anyone else is having similar problems to ours.  First things first: HP Lync Edition phone is manufactured by SNOM.  While support/warranty comes from HP the packaging
    materials on repaired units say SNOM.  With this fact out of the way let me tell you what we are seeing.  On initial roll-out the failure rate "out of the box" was about 5%.  The downstream port would not function - and we needed it
    to connect the workstations in the offices.  The lights on the port would flash, but once you flipped the phone over and made a few calls the port would start acting up.  On some phones the port would just go dead, on others it would come in and
    out - causing endless frustration.  You can typically fix the condition temporarily by unplugging and plugging back in the cable in the downstream/PC port.  Needles to say these were sent back to HP for repair.  By the end of 1st year about
    another 5% of the phones had to be replaced due to the same issues.  Initially we thought that some type of electrical issue on the phone side was at play - perhaps a poorly soldered connection, a batch of bad/loose network jack - something that has to
    be addressed on the manufacturing side of things.  Since then also learned that phones themselves can enter a state in which they remain powered on but claim no network availability.  The phones are all powered via PoE - so they are connected, but
    somehow they claim the lack of access to a network at an Ethernet/Level 2 level.  A phone reboot fixes the problem.  This makes us thing that the issue is not in wiring, but in some low level firmware on the phone - not the WinCE 6.0 the phone is
    running - but maybe something else.  Phones run the latest UC software available from Microsoft.  We have some Polycom VVX phones in identical setup - those have no issues with the network. 
    Anyone seen this?  Share your experience - let us know what you've done.  We have no issues with phone provisioning, dropped calls or unexpected sign-outs.  Lync farm running latest CU as well.

    After writing the post above I did another experiment with the phone. 
    Took it apart to see if I can notice something obvious on the PCB - noting there - all is firmly attached and well soldered.  Used a magnifying glass with high magnification to verify that there are no cracks in the solder where RJ-45 jack attaches
    the to the PCB.  Put it back together - plugged in the network cable.  Phone boots, asks me to sign in - as I start the process and begin handling the phone I get disconnected from the network.
    The error message that the phone shows:
    "The Network cable was not detected. Please check that your cable is connected to the network port and that you have a network connection."
    In this state the lights on the network port are off - they are not blinking.  So the PoE is delivered but the interface is down.  Looking at the port status on the switch shows that  PoE is "delivering" but the link status is "down". 
    All you have to do is firmly press the network cable back into the phone and it starts working.  Go figure what's at play.

  • Mac Mini Server 2010 Networking issues

    I cannot get a consistent connection to my wireless router over Wi-Fi or when wired. It seems like the firewall is getting in the way because I can get a connection if I turn it off, but then once connected I can switch the firewall back on and it works. Having turned the firewall off and then back on again I can even then disconnect and reconnect the cable and it works for a while (I have made it inactive and then active again which also works) until some time later after a longer period of inactivity the whole connection issue starts again.
    The network in use has been and still is a solid network for the plethora of MacBooks, XP, Windows 7, Linux machines we use so I can only assume it is some kind of setup issue. I would really like to start the Server Setup wizard again or re-install as I think something may have gone wrong right at the outset. As it doesn't have a DVD drive I am not sure yet how I could reinstall.

    I solved this by scouring the firewall settings. So, to share what I found:
    When using DHCP to assign an IP address for the OS X Server, without any of my own services running (eg. DHCP/DNS/Web etc) the firewall decided to not enable the DHCP and BOOTP Client ports, causing my DHCP requests to not function correctly. Checking the DHCP and BOOTP Client setting made the networking problems disappear.
    Sounds obvious once it is discovered!!

  • IOS 5.1 Created Intermittent Networking Issues - Log Bug?

    I've been putting up with this defect ever since I switched over to the iOS 5.1.  Having used iPhone since the original first-gen 16GB release (and 3 generations of iPhones after that) and not ever seeing this problem I'm quite sure of the timeframe of this change.  I'd like to log a bug but it seems as if you can only do this if you're registered as an apple developer... is there another way?  Although this issue isn't reproducible it occurs often enough that I see it at least a few times a week.  The details of the problem are:
    1. Network connectivity seems to drop permanently when trying to use the EDGE/3G/4G network in areas where the the signal strength is weak (this seems to be the trigger for the issue).
    2. Resolving the issue requires either rebooting the iPhone or toggling Airplane Mode.
    Other factors that my influence this:
    1. I'm using AT&T's network so that may have a bearing on this particular issue.
    2. I'm not switching to a wifi network while doing this- so it seems exclusively tied to the AT&T data network.  However, I'd imagine that the bug may rear its head because the iPhone tries to switch to a wifi network when it doesn't see the data network available- note: I don't think the wifi dialog pops up when this happens so this is just speculation on my part.
    3. I saw this start happening after upgrading to the 5.1 but not immediately after upgrading, but pretty soon afterwards.  So, there could still be something else causing this- I provided the version 5.1 info because that may help Apple to try to figure out what changes introduced this problem so they can limit the scope of their investigation into this issue.
    NOTE: I'm pretty sure this isn't hardware specific or specific to my phone.  A friend has encountered the same issue.  He told me that he works around the problem by toggling Airplane Mode (at the time I was rebooting my phone all the time which was pretty tedious).  He saw the issue start happening around the same time I did.

    1. did it also seem to correlate with iOS 5.1 for them?
    2. is it AT&T specific?
    3. is it iPhone 4 & 4S specific or does it apply to older iPhones running iOS 5.1?
    4. is it only specific apps that access the data network (I regularly use Newsify, Mobile RSS, Flipboard so one of these may be causing the problem if it isn't a general networking issue)
