Consolidating masters from an iPhoto library
Hi Folks,
I have most of my Aperture images referenced to my iPhoto library (from a time before I used Aperture). Now, I want to make Aperture manage the masters in its own library and have my iPhoto library pretty bare. I have three questions.
1) Is "Consolidate masters" the right operation? I'm confused by "Consolidate masters" versus "Manage Masters" (I thought I wanted to have Aperture manage my masters, but when I see the window for "manage masters" I have no idea what I'm supposed to do there.)
2) Assuming "consolidate masters" is correct, if I have Aperture "move" the masters, will I invariably mess up the iPhoto library by Aperture poking into places it shouldn't be?
3) Can I perform the "Consolidate masters" operation on a whole project, or do I have to repeat for each folder in the project?

Thanks for your answer and your work on Bagelturf. I should have thought to look there first.
My question about iPhoto wasn't quite about preserving my Aperture photos in both places, but about ensuring my iPhoto library wasn't trashed because Aperture moved files around. I think the following quote from Bagel Turf answers my question.
The warning here is because I could have other Aperture libraries that also reference the same masters. If I move them, they will not be usable from those other libraries.
I think I can extrapolate from that. Since Aperture won't modify other Aperture libraries to indicate the masters moved, it will not modify iPhoto libraries to indicate the masters moved. Would you agree? It's a bad idea to have Aperture move my iPhoto masters and still have iPhoto work right? Or could I do it anyway and then delete the "missing" masters through iPhoto? (I know, it's sort of a crossover question...)

All of my pictures from my iPhoto library are gone after upgrading to Mavericks
I just upgraded to Os X Mavericks and now all of my pictures are gone from my iPhoto library, and of course I am unable to access this version of iPhoto on OS X Mavericks.
I tried to find them using a different application or in Finder, and in both cases "iPhoto Library" is in Gray and no contents are available. My system memory doesn't seem to be reflecting the number of photos I have either.
If I go back to my old operating system will it work? If not, I have lost all my pictures since February of 2011. I have been crying nonstop for an hour trying to figure out what to do.Open the App Store and upgrade iPhoto to the Mavericks version. Installing OS X does not do anything to your iPhoto Library.
The iWork apps are free with a new iOS device since 1 SEP 2013. They are free with a new Mac since 1 OCT 2013. They are also free with the upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 if you had the previous version installed when you upgraded. -
Dear all,
I want to automatically extract my iphone-videos from the iPhoto library since I have way over 25 000 objects in there. Afterwards I would like to import them into iMovie. Anyone having an idea? Or is there no possibility to do so?

Moving photos from one iPhoto library to another
Is there a way to move photos from one iPhoto library to another? I tried to use export, and that puts the photos in the other iPhoto library (I can see the photo if I open Hard drive>user>pictures>iPhoto Library but when I open iPhoto it is not in that Library's library.
If I have not made myself clear, please ask and I'll try again.

I love using iPhoto but this is a real drawback.

I have bought an external disk so i can free the space on my laptop by moving photos and now I have to buy some software in order to do that??
You don't have to buy it. What's more the free version of iPhoto Library Manager will move up to 20 pics at a time. And the paid version is only $20.
BTW: you can run an entire library from the external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Moving events from one iPhoto library to another
I want to move some events from one iPhoto library to another. Does anyone know that this is possible and if so, how do I do it?
iPhoto cannot do it . The full version of iPhoto Library Manager can transfer events between libraries, or Aperture can do this.

If you want to save the money for additional tools, doit manually:
Export the photos from each event you want to transfer to a folder.
Import the folders with images to your other iPhoto library.
You have to make up your mind, if you want to move the original files to your other library or the edited versions. Only exporting the original files instead of the edited files will preserve the full quality. Actually, you want to export both. Using iPhoto library Manager will ensure, that both will be transferred and paired as one photo. -

Hi,
Just wondering if you can help.
I have two Iphoto libraries and would like to consolidate them into one.
However, I want to import them in their current albums rather than as individual files as there is 31,000 of them and it will take forever to put them back into albums.
Is there anyway to do this?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Does the new library have photos in it or is it new? If new and empty, move it to the trash and copy the old library folder into the Pictures folder. Download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Then launch iPhoto and let it convert the old library to the new version complete with keywords, comments, albums, etc.
If the new library has photos in it and you want to keep the keywords, comments, etc. from the old library intact then try the following:
1 - rename the old library and put it in the Pictures folder along with the new library.
2 - run BatChmod on the old library folder as described above.
3 - launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, opt to select a library and select the old one. Let iPhoto convert it.
4 - download and use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two libraries. This will keep all your metadata intact.
If you don't need the keywords, etc. of the old library then all you need to do is drag the Originals folder from the old library folder into the open window of the new library. That will import the originals into events (if you have the Events preferences set like this) that correspond to the rolls you had in the old library.

Importing from one iphoto library to another--how to?
I want to go into a large iphoto library and break it up into several smaller ones.
I currently have two iphoto libraries which, it turns out, are much bigger than the optimal size. One is 25 gigs and the other 71 gigs.
I was told that 5000 pictures should be the max, and the SMALLER of the two has about 6000 pictures and movies. It works fine.
The 71 gig library, however, has had some problems, and run slowly. I want to break it up into several smaller libraries.
I know how to create a new library. And how to close one and open another. But how do you move images from one libary to another?

tYou can split the library by duplicating it and then delete those photos from the second copy that you don't want in it. If you want to move photos between libraries and keep the keyword, titles, comments, albums and event intact then use iPhoto LIbrary Manager that Niel suggested.

I'm trying to import photos from my iphoto library, but keep getting a message saying I cant import from 7.1.5, that I need to upgrade to 7.1.5 or later. But I have version 8.1.2. I don't know what to do. I've been able to import in the past.
Sounds like an issue with the iPhoto Library
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I am having a problem when I try to select a photo or itunes song in Imovie or other programs. I get a window with grey lettering that says: "Open Itunes to populate this list" or "Open iphoto to see photos from your iPhoto library in this list. I have tried relaunching programs and nothing appears. Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.
After a a lengthy conversation with Apple Tech. ($20), my problem seems to be solves. The Iphoto problem solved by trashing the plist file. The Itunes was more involved. We had to create a new Itunes folder and import the files into the new folder; and then import the playlists.

Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.

To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -
I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
Quit iPhoto.
Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine. (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.

and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.
