Constant Activity between Airport Extreme and modem

Hello all,
I am the recent owner of an Airport Extreme. My Aiport Extreme is connected to my VDSL modem through the WAN port.
In the Options menu, I set the option "Status Light" to "Flash on Activity".
Doing so, I discovered that there is always activity between :
1) the Airport Extreme           => I can see the green led flashing every 4-5 seconds
2) the VDSL modem          => I can see the network led of the modem flashing every 4-5 seconds in sync with the Airport Extreme
Initially, I thought it was "real traffic" coming either from wireless devices or ethernet devices... But after unplugging the ethernet cables (for the devices connected via cables) and after disabling the Wifi network of the Airport Extreme, the leds of both Airport Extreme and the modem were still flashing in sync every 4-5 seconds... Then, I also unchecked the "Set time automatically", and still, both leds were still flashing in sync at the same interval !
I am a bit lost !
I am wondering what there is traffic/activity happening every 4-5 seconds when no device (either via Ethernet or wifi) is connected.
Do you also face the same issue ? Do you know the reason of the almost permanent activity between the Airport Extreme and my VDSL modem ?
Thank you very much for your replies !

Hello Bob Timmons,
Thanks for your insight in this.
Well, actually, to be logical, this traffic between the WAN port of the Airport Extreme and my modem could be coming from
1) garbage/requests on the VDSL line from my ISP
2) requests from the Airport Extreme to my modem
If it is number 2, do you think that the Airport Extreme could query the modem every 4-5 seconds, i.e. to check that the Internet connection is alive ?
Thanks for your feedback,
Regards,

  • Difference between Airport Extreme and Airport Express

What is the difference between Airport Extreme and Airport Express? My son is home from college and would like to use his Macbook for an online class. So I need a wireless router and I would also like to be able to play our iTunes over multiple speaker locations with my home stereo. Which one of these could accomplish this. Thanks in advance.

If you can use just one device to both set up a WiFi network and connect to your stereo you have to use an Airport Express. If you have to use separate devices, for instance because your internet connection device and your stereo are not in the same location, you have to use an Express to stream to and you can use either an Express or an Extreme to set up the WiFi.
By the way you have to use an Express for each stereo you would like to connect.

  • My devices not automatically switching between Airport Extreme and Airport Express in extended network

I have setup an extended network in my home using an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express. The Extreme is connected directly to the FiOS modem and the Express is being used as the extender. The nework is setup fine, but my devices (MBA, iPhone, iPad) are not switching base stations when the signal becomes poor on the one it's connected to. For example, I am upstairs with my MBA and a great signal as I am connected to the Express. When I move downstairs to where the Extreme is setup, the Wi-Fi connection becomes poor even though I am litterally sitting next to the Extreme. To force it to connect to the Extreme, I need to shutoff the Wi-Fi on the MBA and turn back on. At this point, the MBA will connect to the Extreme with a excellent signal.
Any thoughts on why the MBA is not automatically switching?
    Thanks for the help!
    Brian

The first troubleshooting step for any kind of network "issue" is a complete power cycle of the network. This gives everything a "fresh start" with new connections.
Power off the entire network.....all devices....in any order you want
    Wait a minute or two
Start the modem/router first, and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next and let it run a full minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until the entire network is back up
Check the network again with the MBA and report on your results
Do not worry about the iPhone and iPad....they are pretty much hopeless as far as automatically switching from one access point to another....but the MBA should if it is working correctly.

  • What is the difference between airport extreme and airport express, can i use an airport extreme to extend internet and also the airport express ?

CAN YOU TELL ME THE REAL USE ?

Oh wow, now I wished I would have researched this more, We currently have the airport extreme and wanted a backup drive and was referred to get the time capsule. So i guess i need to choose which one to use.

  • Clash between AirPort Extreme and BlackBerry Curve on Apple MacBook??

Hi, I have a 1GB Apple MacBook and use my AirPort Extreme port for Internet access. Lately I have noticed that whenever I receive a text or e-mail through my BlackBerry Curve phone, AirPort cuts out. Each time I have to restart my Road Runner modem and the AirPort base station to get the signal back. Is there some sort of glitch between the signals of the AirPort and the signals of the BlackBerry? Has anyone else experienced this? Thank you for your help!

    Hi,
I am using the Lynksys WPC4400N and I do not have too many problems. Speed is 117-130 Mbps.
    Hope this helps.

  • Random, frequent connection drops between Airport Extreme and MBP

I've had my Airport Extreme (on 7.6.1) and MacBook Pro (on 10.5.8) for a bit over a year.
    Never experienced any connection issues.
4 days ago, connectivity issues started out of nowhere (no updates etc). MBP would sometimes not find the Airport at all in Airport Utility (and then of course also can't find the network), and the connection will just break up intermittently - sometimes every 5 minutes, sometimes every half an hour.
Interestingly, other devices work flawlessly, particularly Xbox and PS3, without connection issues. My DSL modem is just fine, so the issue must be somewhere between the MBP and the Airport Extreme.
    WHAT DID HELP (so far)
    - Turning WPA/WPA2 security off entirely, but I cannot have my WPA off forever as neighbours will use my connection and we don't have flatrates in Australia
WHAT DID NOT HELP (so far)
    - Switching from WPA/WPA2 to just WPA
    - Changing the radio mode
    - Switching Connection Sharing from "Share a Public IP Address" to "Off (Bridge Mode)"

I have tried a billion more things since, but the one that seems to have at least improved the situation is to downgrade Airport Extreme to 7.5.1 and change the channel from #1 to #7

  • What is the difference between airport extreme and express

What is the difference between them? I am not familar with apple products other then the iphone and the ipad

Extreme has three LAN ports; Express has one (both have one WAN port)
Extreme has Gigabit Ethernet, Express 100-BaseT - this affects activities such as performing large file transfers or streaming
Extreme's USB port can be used with an external hard disk, Express can only be used for a USB printer
Only the Express can stream iTunes music.
The Express is about $80 cheaper than the Extreme.

  • Help ! - Connection between airport extreme and airport express

I have a home network with an iBook connecting wirelessly to an aiport extreme base station and an iMac connecting through an Airport Express, which has been configured as a relay to the base station (extending its range). The iMac is on the fourth/attic floor of my house; the iBook on the main floor.
The iMac has a printer attached to it; the iBook does not.
I have only intermittently been able to "see" the printer from my iBook and to print to it. Simiarly, i have only been intermittently been able to pull files from the iMac on to the iBook. I have no trouble connecting to the internet with either machine.
Why does the network keep dropping the airport-express-connected imac (and printer)? what can i do? help!

Sounds like an interferance problem to me. Do you have a cordless phone? You can try changing the channel on the AEBS or enable internet robustness.

  • Lost connection between airport extreme and macbook air when transferring large files

    Can anyone help...?
I have an imac and macbook air wirelessly connected to a airpot extreme being used as a router with a hard drive for sharing files accross the network.
It connects ok but when we try and look at a number of large files one after the other, or copy files from the shared hard drive onto the macbook air, the macbook loses wireless connection?
A very strange issue which i cant figure out....
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Shirmy

It could be a wireless interference or strength of wireless signal issue.
What happens when you connect the MacBook Air to the router via an Ethernet connection?

  • My wireless network looses connection between airport express and modem.

The indicator under the "Internet" icon in airport utility switches from green to amber every minute or so.  When it is amber I have no, or very slow speed.

Interestingly the Linksys WRT-54G is one of the few non-Apple routers that are WDS-compatible with the earlier 802.11g AirPorts. There are a number of posts on the Internet (use the following search terms: Linksys AirPort WDS) where the authors described how they configured theirs to work.
If; however, you don't want to "experiment," your suggestion to interconnect the two routers by Ethernet should work just fine. In this case, you would want to configure them both for a roaming network.

  • Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

I have installed my Airport Extreme and have conencted it directly to a modem. WIFI works fine. However I do not see my LAN network (printer. NAS,..).
    Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Difference Between Airport Express and Extreme?

What may I ask, is the difference between the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express? And why is there a price difference between them. And would I be able to use it for surfing the web and print wirelessly on my Macbook? Which would be worth it for me, Because I'm sorta on a tight budget...

That page does not explain what I think is the most significant feature difference. The Extreme has two Cat5 (Ethernet) sockets (abelled LAN and WAN) whereas the Express has only one (which serves as LAN or WAN depending on its configuration).
If your ISP allows you only one IP address per account, you need a router with NAT to serve multiple computers. Both Extreme and Express have a router with NAT inside.
With an Express, the Cat 5 cable socket is used up with the WAN (modem) input, so all your computers on the LAN must connect wirelessly. There would be no Cat 5 cable for the LAN.
With an Extreme, however, your local computers may connect either wirelessly or via the LAN Cat 5 cable socket (through hubs as necessary).
So, if you wish to add a Mac Book, say, to an installation that has one non-airport computer connected directly to the (Cable or DSL) modem, and the ISP will not serve more than one IP, you can connect an Extreme's WAN port to the modem and configure it translate that one IP via NAT to serve multiple local IP addresses on the LAN. Then you connect your non-airport computer to the Extreme's LAN port. Your Mac Book can then connect either wirelessly or also (with a hub) via the Ethernet LAN. You can't do this with an Express.
A secondary feature difference is that the Express supports AirTunes to drive a mini stereo audio output socket on the case of the Express. It also supplies digital audio via optical fiber through the same socket. Either of these allows iTunes to play over your house stereo system wirelessly. You can't do this with an Extreme.

    Hi SMLaracy:
The AE offers Wireless access and/or Airtunes and/or a USB printer port and WDS with a compatable WDS basestation.
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
The AEBS offers Wireless access with an additional LAN port (to connect a wired computer or switch), a USB printer port and a built-in modem.
    http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/
    I hope this helps!

    John,
I'd pay good money to bet it wouldn't last 5 years... I don't rate the in built power supply and as for "server grade hard disk" - Hmmmm..... The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%.
    Regards,

In theory, yes. If you configure the two base station into either an extended or roaming network configuration, you should be able to walk a laptop between routers and the laptop should attempt to connect/reconnect to the base station providing the stronger signal ... but, in reality, this is not always 100% true.
