Constant Amber Light - Airport Express

I've been using my Airport Express successfully now for about a year to connect my Mac to a stereo wirelessly. However, today, the Airport Express stopped working. Essentially, the Airport Express just shows a solid amber light, and it is not shown on the Airport Express Setup utility at all.
I have done a factory install reset, and the Airport Express blinks green when I initially do the reset, and then it turns to a constant amber. Nothing happens after that no matter how long I wait.
Ideas? Is this a hardware failure?

Sounds dead to me. One of mine died recently and was just like you describe.
I took it as a signal to buy a new Extreme base station

A solid amber light indicates that the AirPort Express cannot get out of startup mode.....likely because of a power supply issue within the device.
Try a Factory Default Reset as a last resort to see if that might help. To do this....
Power off the AirPort Express and wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button on the Express first, and keep holding it for 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back into power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart
At this point, if the Express is operating correctly, the amber light will be blinking slowly and you can reconfigure the Express again.
If the amber light remains solid after a few reset attempts, the internal power supply on the Express is faulty and the device will need to be replaced.

  • Why does Green-lighted Airport Express Repeatedly Hang & Require Reset

I have a network with an Airport Extreme acting as my home router (doing NAT and DHCP with a 20 minute lease time) and 3 Airport Express basestations in Bridge Mode connected to the Airport Extreme via wired Ethernet ( I live in a large apartment with lots of concrete walls and need multiple WiFi basestations to cover the whole place).
I have had these Airport Express for years and they work fine but every few days, I notice that I cannot connect to one using an iPad, iPhone or whatever, even though the Airport Express light is green and I can see the WiFi network associated with the particular Airport Express.  I have them running WEP 40 bit with MAC Address Access Control.  All of these Airport Express are the older model A1084 and are running firmware version 6.3.  The failure is evident when I try to connect to the WiFi network associated with the Airport Express and enter the correct password and I am rejected. Or when I attempt to use Apple TV and find it is not connected to the internet for this same reason.
At this time, as I recall it, I also cannot see the misbehaving Airport Express using AirPort Utility.
But upon cycling the power of the failing Airport Express, after power up and showing amber and then finally green, all returns to normal, with other iDevices able to connect and with the Airport Express visible using AirPort Utility.  When reset in this manner, the Airport Express works for hours or days.  So far I have never experienced a failure when actually using an iDevice connected to the Airport Express.  The failure is always when I move an iDevice around the house and it attempts to connect to the WiFi network nearby after it loses its connection to the WiFi network it was previously attached to.  Or when I attempt to use Apple TV and find it is not connected to the internet for this same reason.
This does not seem to be a thermal problem as the Airport Express are all hanging from wall receptacles surrounded by open space in an air conditioned apartment, i.e. they could not be better cooled unless a fan was blowing on them.  And once power cycled, they always work for several hours afterwards.  It almost seems like a long time constant software problem (i.e. a memory leak or the like) that causes them to hang after an extended period of usage, or perhaps after several attempts by iDevices to connect to them.
Might there be some patch or upgrade to resolve this?

We need to check the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) at the location of the AirPort Express to see what quality of signal it is receiving from the wireless network.
I am assuming that your "main" router is also an Apple router, correct?
Unfortunately, most "free" utilities do not provide an easy way to check SNR. One that I recommend is WiFi Explorer....but it is about $4 or so. I have no interest in this other than that as a customer.
Mac App Store - WiFi Explorer - iTunes - Apple
If you want to make the investment.....very useful for analyzing wireless connections.....we can proceed with checking your network. Post back if that is the case.

  • CONSTANT problems with Airport Express in two rooms, dropped connection with gateway, no AirPlay

I have 3 Airport Express in my apartment, one is connected (named Living Room) to my ISP provided gateway (router) and acts as the main wireless hub, the other two (named Kitchen and Bedroom) and are set up to provide AirPlay audio only.
The ones set up for AirPlay have had constant issues since we moved to our new place 4 months ago, this is very strange because we were with the same ISP in the old place and used the same gateway (router) without any problems which leads me to think that there is something in the walls in the new place which is blocking an effective signal.
Even as I type this, I have Airport Utility open on my Mac and a message just popped up from AU saying that 'Living Room is unavailable'.
Attached is a screenshot which shows the current status of the Airport network. Basically it is a mess, and I have tried everything, from resetting the ISP router and all the AXPs, to changing the Network Modes to experimenting with repositioning the units to points in rooms where the reception might be better.
    NOTHING has made any difference.

Sorry, have been away for work so only just had a chance to look again at this:
I'lll try again: right now using WiFI Explorer I can see 9 other networks, 3 of those are using channel 11, the same as my Airport Express network. (Set to Automatic in Airport Utility)
What I tried to explain earlier was that the one in the kitchen will not stay connected long enough for me to get a reading on WiFi Explorer, but I can tell you that I powered up the one in the bedroom at 19:56, it is currently connected in Extend Wireless Network mode (the one in the kitchen is disconnected from the power) and has an average SNR of 59dB (and shows as 'Excellent' in Airport Utility) and so far it has not dropped the connection, but I am 99% certain that it will be back to blinking amber by tomorrow.
So there is one Airport Express in the living room which is the one that has created the wireless network, within the living room the Average SNR is around 60% (as you would expect as that is the unit that is wired to the ISP provided router).
Since I connected the one in the bedroom earlier this evening it has managed to stay connected and appears to still be extending the network, I checked it just now by standing next to it with WiFi Explorer open on my MacBook Pro and it showed an average SNR of 55%.
I ordered a 10 metre ethernet cable yesterday and I will try relocating the unit that is set to create the wireless network to a place in the living room that is closer to the bedroom and kitchen. It is currently on a shelf on the TV bank which is about two metres away from the wall closest to the kitchen.
I will report back here once I have moved it and set up the kitchen and bedroom boxes again. Hopefully this will allow the kitchen one to stay connected long enough for me to get a reading on WiFi Explorer.

  • Constant Amber Light

I bought my apple tv over a year ago, I have had problems where the indicator light would be flashing yellow for a long time. For that case, i just unplugged everything and let it sit for a couple hours and when i replugged the cables, the Apple Tv would work smoothly.
However, this time, the LED indicator is just a constant amber color. No flashing, i plug all the cables in and the light is yellow and nothing shows up on the TV. I tried to keep it unplugged for a week but it still has the same problem.
What do i do? is there a way to restore/reset the apple tv? any help would be appreciated

press and hold the menu + the down button and then follow the instructions 'til you are given the option to restore to factory setting.. this will restore the software that came with the appleTV.. you can then proceed to do updates.

  • Constant activity on airport express

Any ideas why my Airport Express (and modem) are constantly showing activity?
I've set security and access control. Even tried switching channels from 11 to 6.
It's not that I'm seeing slow speeds, but who knows what I could be getting?
BTW, I'm on Comcast and using they're Motorola router.
    Thanks.
P.S. Any reason I couldn't put a switch between the modem and the router?

  • Seagate Backup Plus 3 HFS  formatted drive when plugged in to new Airport Extreme causes it to shut off and shows constant amber light.  Please help.

I just purchased a new 3tb Seagate Backup Plus 3 to attach to my new Airport Extreme.  When I plug the Seagate's USB in to the AE, the drive starts spinning, clicks and then the AE light turns amber and the wifi connection is lost.  After I unplug the HDD the signal comes back and the AE light turns green.  I have even tried using 3 partitions on the drive to see if that would work.  I have a 1tb portable drive that has worked on the AE but this new drive doesn't.  I have formatted both drives with Macdrive 9 pro and only the portable drive has worked.  I've tried everything I could find on the internet to resolve this.  I hope someone out there can help.

When it blinks amber, use the airport utility to peek at the status to see what error it's telling you. I'm guessing you MAY need to use a powered hub...

  • Flashing amber light, Airport wants to update, but I don't

The Airport works fine without the update. We have the flashing yellow light. Should we just ignore the update and the flashing yellow? (I'm afraid that the update will screw things up)

Hello M in Denver. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The Airport works fine without the update. We have the flashing yellow light. Should we just ignore the update and the flashing yellow?
Yes, you can ignore the warning to update. You can also disable the warning by using the AirPort Utility. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Summary > Select the amber dot adjacent to the Status line. This will bring up the reason(s) for the warning. You can then ignore (disable) any particular warning.)
You can also disable automatic updates to the AirPort Utility itself. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > From the AirPort Utility's menu bar select AirPort Utility > Preferences > Disable (uncheck) each or all options on this panel.)

  • Flashing amber on airport express

I can connect to the internet directly with an ethernet cable to a cable modem but when I connect to the cable to the Airport, it just flashes amber. My Macbook finds the Airport but it won't connect to the internet. What am I doing wrong?
    Susie

Start by performing a complete power recycle of your network components:
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem & AX. (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, let's check your AX's settings:
Using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure: Using DHCP
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)

  • My airport express no longer works with my network

The airport utility does not recognize my airport express. It was suggested to download Airport utility 5.6.1 but that is no longer compatible with my OS X 10.7.4. Even my iphone sees it but then crashes when it trys to do something with it.

It's an easy mistake to make, but AirPort Utility 5.6.1 will only run on Snow Leopard and Leopard machines.
If you want to use the previous version of AirPort Utility, you need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
It might be a good idea to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express and then start over to reconfigure the device. To do this....
Power off the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first and keep holding it in for an additional 9-10 seconds as you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow it 45 seconds or so to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
The Express provides a default wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. Make sure that your computer is logged on to this network first....no password is required.....then open AirPort Utility and it will have a good chance to recognize the Express.

  • Buying old Airport Express of eBay - Do i need sellers' password?

    Hi,
If i just bought an old Apple Airport Express (The one that actually plugs into that wall) on eBay, do i need to ask for the sellers' password to the Aiport Express in order to connect it to my current wireless network and use airplay to steam music? What im ultimetly asking is: If i get the this airport express and i dont have the password, am i out of luck? Do i even need a password to connect to the aiport ecpress?, or do i just use the password to my current wireless network?
         Thanks, Riley

Perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express as follows to get the device back to new, out of the box settings.
    Power off the Express
    Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first and continue to hold it in for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back in to the Express
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    The Express is now reset
If you are asked for a password, the default is "public" (without the quotes)

  • Configuring airport express to work with a secure router

i have installed a new router on our network and have added security.  My airport express no longer can recognize the network since I believe it has to pass along a password.
How do I tell the airport express the network password?
    Airport utility version 5.5.3
    MAC OSX version 10.6.8

You have to start over and perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express....then re-configure it using the new settings for your "new" network.
    Power off the AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the 9-10 hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
The Express is now back to new, out of box settings so that you can configure it to work with your "new" network.

  • I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is flashing and so it is not being recognized.  I have been on the computer and gone to airport utility and it is simply not showing up at all.  What can I do?

I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is blinking.  When I go to utilities and try to find the airport express it does not show up.
    What should I do?

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • New airport express flashes amber light

I just purchased an airport express. It keeps flashing the amber light. This morning my mac mini recognized its existence. It won't even recognize it tonight. On my computer, it says that the airport express is connected to our network, which is odd. I am not sure if the device is defective, or if there is anything I can do to remedy this. A call to the internet service provider indicates that the airport express is supported by their internet services. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there
You may need to set up your Ax using the Airport Utility found in your utility folder. Double-click this app and go through the steps of the setup. This utility app will scan and find your Ax automatically. When you have gone through the setup process it should turn green
You may reset your Ax using a pin and go through the process from the beginning.
    Good luck.

  • Airport Express 801.11b/g and the neverending, unconfigurable blinking amber light

Gather round and let me tell you a tale. Once upon a time I bought an airport express 801.11b/g and I was very happy to use it for airtunes, extending a wi-fi network and the wireless printing capabilities. One day, it beagn flashing a scaaaary amber light. The base station stopped showing up in my airport utility 5.6 as well. The only way to get it to show up, was to hard reset it, and lose all the configurations I once enjoyed happily. After the hard reset, It would show up in the utility, and I would reconfigure it to do all its cool things it once did, and it would restart. But sadly, after restarting the blinking amber light came on a again. It would also not show up in the utility unless I hard reset it again, and the same thing happened over and over and over until I felt like pulling my hair out.
I decided to get another airport express a few months later, ultimately deciding that the unit must have just been defective. Bad luck. But - the second unit literally went through the SAME EXACT THING. Worked for a while, then onto the blinking amber light- hard reset- reconfigure-blinking amber light thing. Over and over and over. Just like the first one. The end.
So - either Im missing something totally fundamental or I had the misfortune of getting two defective units in a row. Both were bought used from different places, and worked "fine" for previous owners. Am I corrupting these things or what?
I have spent literally hours trying all the resets, configuring "workarounds" and nothing works. For both of them.
What do I do with these two devices? I don't need two shiny white paperweights.
    Please advise,
    Thanks.

Yes. It seems an integral part of the set up process though, you don't have to seperately configure the airport do you?
My wireless security is WPA/WPA2 Personal. When I go through the standard network set up, it automatically enters my wireless security settings. So it doesn't really seem to give an option to specifically set that option on the airport if that makes sense?
I did go through maunual mode to try that with the same result:
If I'm using the airports own network and connect to the wifi, no security, then I'm getting airtunes from my macbook. Of course this means it's plugged into my router via ethernet which isn't any use to me as I want it in my kitchen, and would rather not limit my apple devices to b/g when I have a decent N router, and would also mean running a huge ethernet cable across my house!
The seller has said it worked for him but he's not up to scratch on his tech, so if I'm sure it's malfunctioning he'll refund. Obviously this is great news and he seems like a very nice guy so I want to be certain it's not me malfunctioning before I send it back!
So in summary I have it functioning on it's OWN network:
Wireless mode: Create a wireless network
Wireless network name: Apple Network XXXXXX
    etc
Once 'wireless mode' is switched from 'create a wireless network' to 'join a wireless network' I select my current WiFi, security and password, checked the TCP/IP settings all good. Select 'Update'. Get the warning that device and network will be temporarily unavailable am I sure I want to continue. Then it goes through the same as before, says it's succesful, restarts to flashing amber with no way of accessing it unless I hard reset.
Thanks for the help so far...
