Constant beach balls after clean install of lion

mid 2009 17" Macbook, 2.8 core2duo, 8 gigs ram
After constant problems with my Lion upgrade I did a total clean install, even reinstalling my programs 1 by 1. Everything worked great for about two weeks and now I am back to constant problems. I can't even type this without beachballs, I can't watch a non-HD video, I can't open FCP at all; the mac completly crashes.
I can't imagine its hardware, because when I restore from time machine it works great for 2-3 days and slowly devolves to useless. What am I missing?

I have tried putting the factory 4 gigs with no change. Tests show nothing with either the 8 or 4 gig set.
A search for fail in the console window, here is just 15 minutes worth, it goes on and on...

  • Constant Freeze Even After Clean Install Mountain Lion

    Hi!
I have before started a post on similar topic but back then it ended with a clean install which worked nicely for merely a month.
Currently I am using 13' MBP 2010 with 2.4 GHz Core 2, 4 GB DDR3. 168GB free of use and latest Mountain Lion, 10.8.3.
My Mac started acting weird and all in all application I am opening.
It will freeze and show that beach ball for 1 or 2 seconds. Believe me, it's extremely annoying if you are listening to music with iTunes or editing photos with Aperture.
I had installed some apps like Aperture, PopClip, Pocket, Transmission, Onyx, Paragon NTFS.
I am tired of doing clean install and re-installing all the apps with their updates, not to mention restoring all of my datas from Time Machine.
I have done booting in Safe Mode and repaired permissions from there. I have reset PRAM/SMC.
Please anyone, enlighten me on this!

The surface scan will take quite a while.
Aperture can pull quite a bit of RAM, so Raidiation Mac's suggestion about more RAM for pro apps is a good one, if all else turns up OK.
OnyX shouldn't be a problem but on the other hand you shouldn't need it for anything. Maintenance and optimization are things your Mac should be doing in the background with no further help needed. Downloading torrents is always iffy and an easy way to pick up malware. The rest of the third party apps I'm not familiar with.
I wish you had tested the clean install before adding the apps. If you have another disk you can do a clean install of ML on and run from that disk for a while, it would tell whether it was your Mac or the added software.

  • Booting in Recovery HD after clean install of Lion

I just deleted my hard drive to do a clean install of Lion, but after I downloaded Lion from the recovery HD, my Macbook Pro will only boot in Recovery HD, and not in the Lion install manager as i was expecting.
When I try to select the Macintosh HD from the boot menu, it is not there, although I can see that I have 6 GB used space on the hard drive. (so I assume that is Lion)

Not sure what you are doing but you need at least 15GBs of space to download and install Lion.
You say you Deleted your hard drive? You can't delete the drive, it is a physical thing. You can remove the Macintosh HD partition using Disk Utility and that is what I think you did. You have to Re-Create that partition to install Lion on.
With Disk Utility open from the Recovery HD go to the Partition tab and highlight the partition box and click the Plus sign as the bottom. Or select One partition from the drop down list. Name it Macintosh HD and use Mac Extended (Journaled) as the format. Click Apply.
Then go back and select Install OS X. Then Continue.

  • Reinstall Apple software after clean install of Lion on 2009 IMac

Completed a clean install of Lion on 2009 IMac, which initially reacted poorly to an upgrade (my first attempt to move to Lion). How do I reinstall iPhoto, Garageband, Aperture, Final Cut Express, iMovie, Logic Express? These were all preinstalled with original purchase. How would I find the serial numbers that will inevitably be asked for? The App store wants to charge for these items, and other non-Apple software I've purchased for the App store won't download again. Multiple issues! Any suggestions?

You'll need to use the DVD's that should have accompanied your system when you bought it.
Prior to the App Store when you purchased a system from Apple that included installed software such as iLile or Final Cut the DVD's were always included in the box. The serial numbers will be on the DVD boxes or DVD's themselves.
    regards
Concerning the App Store purchases if you long into the APp Store using the same Apple ID you used when you bought the software you should be able to download again without charge. At least this is how it works for Apple software don;t know if 3rd party stuff has different rules

  • Is it possible to restore individual apps and files after clean install of Lion?

My new iMac is one of the small group that is having HDD drive replaced due to issue with 1TB Seagate drives.
When I get it back I'd like to install a clean copy of Lion and not restore whole system from TimeMachine.
However I don't want to lose my iTune or Aperture Libraries.  Is it possible to restore just these libraries form TimeMachine backup or is there a better way to go?  Email is all IMAP so not an issue, F/Fox & Safari bookmarks and all contacts & iCal material are likewise MobileMe/cloud based so not an issue.
Just after safest and best solution.
    Thanks

The short answer is: yes you can restore only these libraries from the last Time Machine backup.  It's quite easy
    1) Clean install Lion
    2) Enter time machine from the menu bar while pressing "option" (Browse other Time Machine disks).
    3) Restore the Libraries.
Individual apps are tricker - depending on how they were installed in the first place.  Anything that used an installer, and may rely on library frameworks (e.g iwork or MS Office) is not going to work easily with this method.

  • Can not access my Time machine HD after CLEAN install Mountain Lion

    Hi Everyone!
Thank you in advance for your interest and help, I really appreciate it.
I recently did a clean Install of Mountain Lion and already did all the updates that appeared. However, before doing these clean install, I did a back up with Time Machine on my external Hard drive. Now I can't access to it, doesn't even appear on my sidebar when I connect it. On the other hand it does appear as connected when I open Disk Utility, but I can not access to it. There I have all my 5 years of University works and classes, photos, and music. This Hard drive is only dedicated for my Mac Backups and nothing more.
I guess that if I install again Snow Leopard, it will work, but I have to re install everything as my Mac is a Mid or Late 2007 15-inch Macbook pro and it came with the OS before the snow leopard 10.5 or something like that.
What can I or should I do to access my Hard Drive again?
    Best Regards
    Edd

    Hi Mende,
Sorry for my late reply but I want to thank you for your help.
I followed your instructions and now I can access the drive thank you a lot for this. However, now I don't want to restore everything from my last back-up just some files, How can I do this? Also I want to restore My iLife, but the copy I have from the CD that came with my mac doesn't allow to install it, what can I do.
Take good care, and happy holidays.
    Best Regards
    Edd

  • Macbook has constant beachball even after clean install

I upgraded my February 2010 unibody Macbook from Snow Leopard to Lion in July 2011 but after a few weeks it froze so often it was unuseable. I backed up all my stuff, reformated the HDD and re installed Snow Leopard from the original DVDs supplied with the notebook. I did not restore from Time Machine backup, just dragged and dropped from external HDD.
The Macbook was ok for a week or two but after that the beachball started appearing more and more often untill it was there almost constantly.
Beachball activity was at its worse with iTunes. Things got worse and worse until in the end the Macbook refused to boot at all, just went to the light blue screen with the Apple logo and rotating clock type thing and no further.
I inserted the original discs again, whiped the HDD, re inastalled Snow Leopard (it took 6 attempts to re install the OS, the first 5 times it just said INSTALLATION FAILED) but DID NOT transfer any backed up files or folders and kept the OS just as it was when it came out of the box.
I still get the beachball all the time and application icons in the dock just bounce up and down when clicked and most of the time don't open.
    I have a 250gb HDD and 4gb RAM
I connect to an external HDD every so often just to back up (Time Machine and manual transfer) I have Apple TV and my wifes Macbook (which works perfectly!) connected to iTunes homesharing but that's about it.
What could be causing this problem?

Yes, I'm afraid that's not good. The OS X SMART indicator is somewhat binary .... drive is good or not. Smart Utility gives you insights into the actual SMART indicators to give you a better idea on the health of the drive.
If you have a backup, you can erase the hard drive by doing a security erase which writes zero's to the hard drive, and also resets the bad sector table. That may only be temporary if there's a bigger issue, but you could try it.
If you have Applecare, Apple will replace the hard drive. If you don't have Applecare, did you perchance buy the system on a credit card? Some credit cards extend the manufacturers warranty, so may be worth checking on that. Otherwise, it may be time to consider a new hard drive in the near future (2.5" serial ATA or SATA 7200RPM although you can get slower and faster drives). If you get one yourself, I'd suggest one with a 5 year warranty versus 1 to 3 year warranty. Western Digital makes one that I use in their Scorpio Black line.  You can read user reviews on a number of available drives at     http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%2060000334 0&IsNodeId=1&name=7200%20RPM

  • Hi, why is FCP X stuttering and beach balling after I installed 10.1 and 10.1.1? Not all and admittedly the heavy file sizes of which the project consists, but it wasn't doing this before hand. Also, WHERE is the "switch to proxy" button for playback?

    Thank all, BTW.

If you have a lot of files in one library, create a new library for the project you're working on.
The Proxy selection is now in Viewer Display options.

  • Clean install of Lion has lots of spinning beach balls?

I did a clean install of Lion last week. Before I installed any applications or made any personal preference changes I updated the Lion with all software updates.
However after thinking this was a near perfect/clean install after I week I seem to experience lots of spinning beach balls. My wife notices it a lot when she's checking her school web email, which she seems to lose her cursor for several minutes with beach balls.
I don't know what's going on...I ran verify disk permissions with no change.
    Ideas?

As an experiment, I would see if using something like the OpenDNS or Google DNS servers has any effect.  Often times while doing networking things, there are name lookups and if the DNS servers are slow, or unresponsive, you can see network delays.
System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS -> [+] (click the plus button at the bottom of the list to add new DNS entries).  The one at the top of the list will be your primary DNS server.
    OpenDNS.org
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Google DNS
    8.8.8.8

  • How to do a clean install with lion after it is already installed?

how to do a clean install with lion after it is already installed?

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Older iMac giving me constant beach ball

    Hi all,
I've got a semi-retired 2006 Intel Core2Duo 21" iMac.  I say semi-retired because two years ago I took it from being my primary workhorse to my TV server - hooked the mini-DVI to the TV to act as my primary TV service.
Last week, I started getting the spinning beach ball after every couple of commands, so I tried restarting the computer.  I restarted it and the entire OSX was corrupted and needed to be reinstalled.  So I reinstalled with the latest edition of Snow Leopard and the computer is starting to do it again.  After every couple of clicks, I get about a 30 second wait and a spinning beach ball.  There is now a fresh install of OS X on the computer, and all my TV goes through either iTunes or Safari, so except for Flash and Silverlight, there are no other plugins or errant software.  The system is clean.
Does anyone have any ideas?  I recognize this computer is older and has been very heavily used since day one, but I'm not ready to write it off yet if I don't have to.
    Thanks!!

Darn, I was hoping you wouldn't say that, but a dying hard drive is what I was thinking too
Any idea what the Apple Genius Bar would charge to replace/diagnose the problem?  Have to decide if it is worth it to repair or simply replace with a Mini.

  • Clean install of Lion and Time Machine backups

    Hi All,
I have a new MBP on it's way to be delivered to my house today, and my question is about Time Machine backups. I'd like to restore from my old MBP's Time Machine data, but I'm a little concerend because I've had some issues with Lion. Specifically, very slow at random times, spinning beach balls, etc. I didn't do a clean install of Lion, just the download/upgrade method, and from what I've read, that's caused some problems for people.
Will a restore from a Time Machine backup replace all of the "fresh" system files, etc. on the new MBP, or only move specific files, or files not present in the system (i.e. app preferences)? I'd rather not have to manually copy and install everything if I can avoid it, but I don't want to transfer any old problems to the new MBP. Thanx.

OK, you're right. I wish Apple would get rid of the Applications Folder in the User Folder.
If you haven't read this yet:
How to use Migration assistant to transfer files from another Mac
I still believe you are relatively safe in not porting over trouble from your previous System.
    What trouble are you having

  • Would a clean install of Lion Help

Sorry if this has been covered before.  This is my situation:  Snow Leopard was stable and a really great experience from moving away from windows, but in Oct I upgraded to Lion. Since then all I've had is problem after problem. Safari is a nightmares, hanging a lot, my printer only work if I plug it in via USB, the spinny ball is a daily friend, and my mac hangs far too often.  Though my swearing has improved greatly.  I would go as far as to say Windows XP is far less stressful then Lion.  I would really like this to end as my opinion of Apple is not good.  I know I'm not along on this issue so would a clean install of Lion help or would an clean install of Snow Leapard be better? Rant over...

Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • SLOW and SLUGGISH after clean install PLEASE HELP!

My Macbook Pro started acting slugggish a few nights ago, and it seemed after a reboot that it ran better, but quickly slowed down.  I ran permissions, disk repair, reset the PRAM the SMC and etc... nothing helped.  I tried to do a Time Machine restore and after 10 hours of SLOW restoration (it still had 70 hours left) i decided to do a CLEAN INSTAL of Yosemite 10.10.
Same thing, takes over 10 minutes to boot up and i click on something and the beach ball will spin for a minute.
Disk Utility says everything is OK.... but even the internet is sluggish as if the entire machine is not processing the information fast enough.
ANY HELP is greatly appreciated as this is on day 4.
    Thanks
    Steve

CLEAN INSTALL took over 8 hours to complete, as if everything is running in slow mode.
Also, i ran this app as i see most ask for it.
    Problem description:
Clean Install - OS very sluggish and slow before and after clean install
