Constant Beach Balls

My install of 10.6.3 is a week old (10.6.0 was installed from scratch, then updated to 10.6.3 via the Combo Update). All of my usual programs are back and installed. The reason I reinstalled everything from scratch is that things were running a bit slow. Things are helluvalot faster now, but beach balls are randomly occurring.
I've done some basic troubleshooting, such as repair kext and disk permissions, and running some OnyX scripts. IS there anything else I could try? This is becoming quite annoying. Console doesn't reveal anything (except there are DOZENS of entries for Chromium/Chrome (such as 4/6/10 5:26:29 PM sandboxd[622] Chromium Helper(625) deny mach-lookup com.apple.pasteboard.1). I don't think it's Chromium, since this happens even after rebooting and never running Chromium.
It's not the hard drive. It was scanned for bad sectors, and there were none (unlike my old HDD, which was dying within a few months of purchase).
Any ideas? I'd hate to have to reinstall everything over AGAIN (was definitely worth it though, but I just did this a week ago and don't want to do it again for at least a few more months).

From your log entries it sounds like it may be Chromium Helper. But there are other troubleshooting steps you can take.
Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.3 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Older iMac giving me constant beach ball

    Hi all,
I've got a semi-retired 2006 Intel Core2Duo 21" iMac.  I say semi-retired because two years ago I took it from being my primary workhorse to my TV server - hooked the mini-DVI to the TV to act as my primary TV service.
Last week, I started getting the spinning beach ball after every couple of commands, so I tried restarting the computer.  I restarted it and the entire OSX was corrupted and needed to be reinstalled.  So I reinstalled with the latest edition of Snow Leopard and the computer is starting to do it again.  After every couple of clicks, I get about a 30 second wait and a spinning beach ball.  There is now a fresh install of OS X on the computer, and all my TV goes through either iTunes or Safari, so except for Flash and Silverlight, there are no other plugins or errant software.  The system is clean.
Does anyone have any ideas?  I recognize this computer is older and has been very heavily used since day one, but I'm not ready to write it off yet if I don't have to.
    Thanks!!

Darn, I was hoping you wouldn't say that, but a dying hard drive is what I was thinking too
Any idea what the Apple Genius Bar would charge to replace/diagnose the problem?  Have to decide if it is worth it to repair or simply replace with a Mini.

  • Constant beach balls after clean install of lion

    mid 2009 17" Macbook, 2.8 core2duo, 8 gigs ram
After constant problems with my Lion upgrade I did a total clean install, even reinstalling my programs 1 by 1. Everything worked great for about two weeks and now I am back to constant problems. I can't even type this without beachballs, I can't watch a non-HD video, I can't open FCP at all; the mac completly crashes.
I can't imagine its hardware, because when I restore from time machine it works great for 2-3 days and slowly devolves to useless. What am I missing?

I have tried putting the factory 4 gigs with no change. Tests show nothing with either the 8 or 4 gig set.
A search for fail in the console window, here is just 15 minutes worth, it goes on and on...

  • Constant hanging, beach ball, complete system freeze...please help

I have had my MBP since the beginning of the year, about a month I started experiencing problems and took it into the Apple store where they replaced the Harddrive and Logic Board. It was fine for a while, but since instaling CS5 and upgrading to Snow Leopard my Mac appears to be dying a slow death. It has got to the point where it is completely un-usable, after a restart with no applications running, simply browsing the finder I have constant beach balls as the finder tries to load the contents of a small folder. And when actually trying to do some work, with two or three apps open...the Mac freezes for up to 30 secs before every task, no matter how simple.
All my software and firmware is up to date! This is frustrating and completely disappointing, any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

  • New Macbook Pro Beach Ball Lag

Just got the laptop 2 weeks ago, and everything is updated to latest fixes and patches. One big problem I'm having is the constant beach ball showing while during simple things like opening a regular website, or chatting on adium. It will just occasionally start to occur and last for 10-20 seconds. I do not think its a heat issue since its running at 95 degrees. I originally thought it was xmarks, but I removed that. Currently I only have adium running, text expander, grabup.
Is this a known problem, or if anyone else has any suggestions?

I've been having the exact same problem since I got my laptop ten days ago. It's bugging the **** out of me. Every ten minutes: iTunes stops playing, beach ball of death, then just snaps back to normal as if nothing happened. I'm confident it's not the hard drive locking up because nothing like this happened on my old macbook pro, and it doesn't require any sudden movements to occur. I'm hesitant to take it to the genius bar because I can't easily recreate the scenario. I'm more than happy to provide any data from activity monitor to help the guys reading this forum that are obviously far smarter than me figure out the problem
Edit: Just happened again, took some shots immediately after

  • The spinning beach ball keeps rolling

    Hey there!
I've got a late 2009 Macbook and since updating to OS X 10.6.5 the spinning beach ball's been a frequent problem. It's mostly when I use Safari(5.0.3 newly updated) so I tried downloading Firefox but no luck. It's like the computer has slowed down after the update and I also get the spinning beach ball in Itunes and Spotify from time to time.
I've been scanning the board for an answer and tried some of the tips you good people gave to others in need but nothing's helped.
    Any suggestions?
    /Johan

After serious troubleshooting on my new MacBook with almost constant beach-balling, i realized the only time the computer works as supposed to do is WHILE SPOTLIGHT IS INDEXING. When indexing is done or if it is shut off the beach ball returns.
This is on a completely new installation of 10.6.3 on a formatted hard drive with no 3rd part soft installed. It even beach-balls on the user registration form directly after install... and the welcome-video lagged for a cpl of seconds.
This is crazy. I tried everything
    Repaired permissions
    Cleared caches
    Checked hard drive SMART Status
    Reinstalled osx twice
    turned off journaling
    disabled spotlight
    disabled the motion sensor
There, now the indexing is done and in this sentence i got 2 beach balls...
Come on apple! (2 beach balls in this sentence)

  • Beach ball and occasional restart message (kernel panic warning)

    Hello,
I'm getting ready to start an editing project on FCP using my G5. I'm running into general use problems in that everything I do seems to initiate the beach ball. I now have two FW drives hooked up with my video for the project which seems to making everything even slower. Today I came back into the room with a restart the computer sign. It was the kind that is issued when you have a kernel panic. I know this because I lost the hard drive to my G4 a few years back due to a kernel panic. This has happened on the G5 a couple of times and luckily I have been able to restart and get everything going again. Everything is still slow going and now running FCP is very. The computer takes too long to respond to even basic editing commands such as scrubbing through in the browser. I'm thinking it might be a RAM issue. I'm currently at 1.5 GB DDR and know that optimally I want 2. Before I go purchase more RAM I just want to be sure I've taken care of additional details that could make my system run faster and more efficiently without the constant beach ball and restart messages.

    Hi Steve,
Here is the complete panic log. I thought this might be easier to give you the whole thing rather than cherry pick.

  • Constant freezing and beach balls

I've skimmed other posts and seen that it usualy is a hard drive issue. My question, though, is that most of those posts seem to relate to people having chnaged the computer's original hard drive to something different. My computer's out of the box; haven't changed anything. It's been doing constant 5-45 second freezes and beach balls but when I brought it in to the genuis bar, they took it in - then gave it back to me exactly the same, because it passed every single test. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I bought it in November 2010 (Macbook Pro, 13"), and it's running worse than my housemate's older computer yet supposedly nothing is 'wrong' with it.

    Hi a,
It may be a lack of RAM. How much do you have?
One way to get an idea whether more RAM will help or not, is to check Page outs and Swap used. First, use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking this right after starting up isn’t likely to show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities > open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > near the bottom of the window click on System Memory. If Page outs is more that about 10% of Page ins, and/or Swap used is large, chances are good that adding RAM will help.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342
    (PageOuts explained and “thrashing”) http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
    http://querieslinux.blogspot.com/2009/07/what-is-difference-between-swapping-and .html
Sometimes a process can run amok and use more of the CPU than it should, potentially causing a slowdown and/or heat issues and/or other issues. To check on this, first use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking thisright after starting up may not show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities> open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > click on the column heading titled % CPU (this will update continuously, showing the percentage each process is using) > toward the bottom left of the window, click on CPU (this will show % Idle, which will also tell you how much of the CPU is being used).
It may also be due to a corrupt file or OS and reinstalling the OS could fix it.
It may also be due to certain applications which need updating.

  • Constant Spinning beach ball of death!!! please help!!!

    I have a macbook 2.1ghz with OSX 10.5.8 running with 4gb of 667mhz DDR2
Recently I have been getting spinning beach balls of death on a constant biases. They come when I try to open web pages such as google, youtube, espn.com... ANYTHING actually. They come when I try to open applications, they seem to come when I try to do almost anything. I cannot force quit when they come. I have tried waiting for them to go away, sometimes up to an hour and nothing happens. They have come when I try to open utilities to try to figure out what is wrong. They come in safe mode.
I have run disk permissions like someone suggested to you, and that has done nothing.
I made another account for the computer, and that still receives the same amount of beach balls.
    I tried updating software. Nothing.
    I reinstalled the OS, nothing.
I switched the ram out with the ram that came with the computer, and I still get the beach balls.
I ran Onyx, and it said the drives are fine.
Yesterday out of sheer desperation I reformatted the whole thing. (former PC user) At first it looked ok, but then I began to update software and it locked up. Also, now when I open web pages I get a beach ball that SOMETIMES goes away after 5 minutes. Usually it just spins and spins mocking my existence.
What else can I try? What else can I do? I live in a place that makes it VERY VERY difficult to take to a mac mechanic. (South Korea)
I don't want to have to buy a POS PC netbook. Please advise.

My suggestion won't repair anything but it might be able to tell you if you have a hardware issue....(I am thinking that your hard drive may be about to give up....I have seen almost this exact set of symptoms here before)....try running the (AHT) Apple Hardware Test)...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
....when you are booted from your install DVD pay attention to see if the SBBOD goes away no matter what the AHT says...problems found or not when running the tests....and run the extended set of tests.....
If the problem goes away while you are not booted from the internal hard drive....I would strongly suspect the hard drive....
You don't mention having run (Repair) disk from Disk Utility....not (Repair) permissions....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
...again you will need to boot from your install DVD to run (Repair) disk in Disk Utility...

  • Constant spinning beach balls after upgrading to Lion

I upgraded to Lion on a mid 2010 MacBook Pro.  Ever since I have been dealing with constant spinning beach balls every time I log in to anything, type, browse on both Firefox and Safari, or scroll up and down a page.  I have 8GB RAM, have reset the PRAM, restarted often, all is completely updated.  Anyone else have this problem and what to do about it?  It's extremely annoying and hard to get anything done!  Thanks, karen

This is the info received from another post.
    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Constant hang/freeze/beach ball

I am experiencing nearly constant freezing/beach balls. I can barely type this as it hangs up every 30 seconds or so. It happens in all applications and the finder. The issue started a few months back (with an update I suspect), and I have since installed SL with negative results.
I have repaired permissions and the disk from the SL install disk and checked the hardware with the original system disks: all with no problems reported. Activity Monitor shows 27 GB free space on the HD, more than half the memory available and minimal CPU activity.
Not sure where to head from here, aside from installing SL from a clean disk...

I think that means that someone out there may be attempting to get into your computer and the firewall built into Snow Leopard is preventing that from happening. But I am not sure. Do you have a router attached between your Mac and your cable modem? You could try disabling the Firewall temporarily in System Preferences > Security > Firewall (click Stop) to see if that resolves your problem. If you don't have a router this could be a problem since without the Firewall you would leave the computer open to someone from the outside getting in.

  • Constant spinning beach ball with New Macbook no upgrades

I recently purchase a new macbook worked fine first week then it started. Just upon opening Safari I get a "beach ball" I scroll down "beach ball" Open a new page "Beach ball" everything I do in all programs including Itunes garage band the finder Its frustrating. I Reinstalled the OS still the same problem slow crap performance I've owned over 4 macs now and have NEVER been so frustrated any answers would be great

welcome, I have the same, two macbooks sitting here (I am a mac veteran with 20 years experience and 20+ macs bought and used for myself).
But my new white MacBook is a horror. I changed RAMs, installed 10.4 and 10.5 now half a dozen times fresh from scratch and only Apples updates and the machines dances the spinning beachball dance of death and frustration. I will not replicate all the nonworking behaviour what others have described. Just one thing: Each and every problem people have here, my MacBook has also. There is a fault in this series of MacBooks from the hardware side and from Apple! period!
(Beside this Mac I have a 3 month older more expensive black MacBook sitting on my desk and this is working like a charm, no beachball at all!!!)

  • Constant spinning beach ball, other weird behaviors in Mail

I have been using Mail for years without any problems. Now it gives me the spinning beach ball constantly during use. Could it be because of a recent switch from Verizon to Comcast? At first I thought it had something to do with retrieving messages, which seemed to interrupt message-writing or message-reading. So I set the pref to retrieve manually, but the beach ball continues to spin. It seems random, not related to any particular action, and occurs two or three times every time I use Mail. When the beach ball spins, Mail seems locked up. I also have noticed that sometimes there's a delay when the message headers are loading, and sometimes when I click to open a message, the box comes up empty for a few seconds, then the text flows in. All weird behaviors I have not seen before! Any advice? I tried rebuilding my inbox, but this seems to happen in various user-created mailboxes too -- not any single mailbox.

    Fixed

  • Mini and constant hangs and beach balls of death

    OSX 10.5.8 2GHz 4GB, Safari 5.0
I'm starting to get quite frustrated with my Mini. I'm a power user and it's not uncommon for me to have 25 Safari windows going in tabs in the dock, and running LIghtroom, Photoshop, NeoOffice, Mail, Yahoo messenger, Gmail, Virus Barrier, 1Password, Little Snitch, Text Edit, Preview among other things all at once. I have nearly 300 applications on this machine.
Today I think I was running Chronosync and tried to take a screen shot of something (I use RapidoStart to get apps quick) - so I hit the key to show the apps, and click away on the screenshot widget to get the capture cursor and nothing - so I'm trying it over again several times and no reaction. I give up and a minute or two later I get the capture cursor over and over again 10x forcing me to use it to make it stop, and getting 10x useless captures.
That's just one incident. I'm constantly getting beach balls in Safari. Yes there might be some flash content - though I do also use ClickToFlash to stop most of it. I use Main Menu (handy drop down folder in the Menu Bar for all my apps) - sometimes I click on it and it doesn't react - or hangs and finally works after a looong lag or beach ball.
Sometimes when it's really bad I launch Activity Monitor - if I can get it to react. Safari not responding is the most common culprit, but more often there is no CPU hog or frozen apps on the list. It's just slow and sticky all the way. I do repair disk permissions regularly as well as backups with Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper - both.
The reason I got the Mini was to get rid of these problems - same things that happened even worse on my White iMac. Now it's the same stuff all over again. Pre-OSX Macs NEVER hung when I clicked on something - now it's constantly click and grind. I want immediate and fast use and navigation - is that so much to ask?
Thinking about going to a faster CPU iMac model - or any other suggestions would be helpful. Roto-rooter for clogged OSX? Thanks!

    Thanks everyone for the input!
I've been through all the standard stuff (troubleshoot the beach ball) many times.
I was thinking that it's just the Mini coming up short on processing power - but I would agree it's part that - but also quite a bit in the way I work. I never shut down the machine - also a good idea to clear out the cobwebs and reboot or shutdown more...
Shovebox is something I have but never tried - running it now to see if that helps - but part of the reason to keep many windows/tabs going is to maintain active logins on sites - and to have fast retrieval, instant participation, and reminders of current items - shopping, research, discussions, blog, webdesign, web galleries etc.
Safari does seem central to some of the problems. I'm always trashing cookies and dumping the cache (something else that causes a mega-beachball). Firefox might be an alternative - but it's not currently working with my wireless Kensington keyboard button and scroll shortcuts for web surfing (possibly could be reprogrammed though?). It also seems a bit slower and is not as well color managed/correct as Safari.
I got Virus Barrier as part of a MacHeist deal - it's subscription has run out though so not something I'm interested in continuing with. Probably worth uninstalling to see if that helps. I never did really run into any Viruses anyway! It's mostly ParanoiaWare, LOL.
I'm slowly transitioning away from the PPC apps.
Interesting comment about not using Widgets - guess they just put them in there to degrade OSX performance so it's more like a PC! LOL
I'm guessing a new iMac might be a big bump in speed as well.
I resisted them and chose a Mini because of the horrible glossy screen. I'm a professional photographer so it is critical to have the most accurate non-fatiguing monitor possible - not the "newest and shiniest" just that looks good in a retail store.
So if the Mini isn't enough computing power and the iMac glossy display *****, there's no where left to go in the mid-range. Probably go iMac and use an external "good" monitor for critical editing work - and the glossy useless one for the web and everything else. A Mac Mid-Tower would be the answer - but nope.
OK thanks again - that's a good start to hopefully improving performance!
