Constant disk activity on 2 node RAC 11g cluster - Can anyone help?

Hi Folks,
My first post on the forum so I hope you go easy with me.
I'm new to Oracle, and thought that the best way to get into it would be to dive in and build an experimental RAC cluster on my home network. To this end I used Jeff Hunter's "Build Your Own Oracle RAC Cluster on Oracle Enterprise Linux and iSCSI" guide.
My only departures from the guide is that I've modelled the architecture entirely within Vmware ESXi on a single quad core Opteron server (HP ML115 G5) with 8Gb RAM and a 1 Tb SATA hard disk. I've also used Openfiler 2.3 for the iSCSI storage rather than the deprecated 2.2. I therefore have 2 Virtual Machines running Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.1, and a 3rd VM running Openfiler 2.3. Each VM has a second virtual NIC connected to an isolated vswitch which functions as the RAC interconnect network.
I've completed the configuration of the cluster and all the checks (as per the article) report that everything is a-OK.
However I've noticed that there is a high rate of disk activity on my server, which continues constantly. I've left the server running overnight and the continuous disk activity is still there! :(
I also noticed yesterday that I could not stop the first instance using either the instance specifc srvctl stop instance -d orcl -i orcl1
or the global srvctl stop database -d orcl. In both cases the command appeared to hang. I had no problems stopping the second instance on the other node though. Not sure whether this is related.
So - does anyone else run a similar "single box" setup, and if you do are you noticing similar constant disk activity? If not could you recommend any troublehooting steps I can take to determine the root cause? While the disk activity is contant, the "bursts" appear random, so it looks like something is going on. Not sure what though! :)
Any replies would be much appreciated.
Peter

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
You are right in that there are a lot of guides around to creating "fake" RAC clusters, however Hunter's guide appears to be one of the best and I found it while browsing around the Oracle website. Of course Oracle stress that it is entirely unsupported and for "education purposes" :)
Well education is what I'm after and I accept that it would perform nowhere near a real cluster. Still the performance issues I'm having appear abnormal.
The background to this is that one the applications I manage at work (Vmware) has a backend DB hosted on RAC. There is an entire database team who look after this area. For my own personal edification I'd like to learn a bit more about RAC (and Oracle in general) and get my hands dirty, though I currently have no long term aspirations to become a full fledged DBA. I'm working through a text on Safari and I thought it would be useful to create a "fake" as you put it cluster at home and play around a bit. Unfortunately the resources to create a "proper" environment are currently not within my means:(
With regards to my problem I was hoping someone here has played around with a similar setup and could advise whether they had similar issues. The 3 days or so I spent labouring through the 60 page guide was far more educational than just reading a text.
I've found that the excessive disk activity appears to be down to my server and Vmware ESXi rather than Oracle. I stopped all instances and CRS and the constant disk activity still continued. I had taken number of snapshots of each linux node during my installation and I'm currently deleting these to see whether this improves things. My hard disk could well be the bottleneck as ESXi is really meant for SCSI controllers and disks if using local datastores.
I'll take your advice and have a trawl through Ebay. I will also install standalone oracle on a seperate box and have a play with that.

My DVD drive has stopped working...put a disk in...spits it out. Can anyone help?

If you have a mid 2010 iMac, it is not PPC.  PPC refers to pre-2006.
The 2010 is getting close to the age the PRAM battery might go, so that could be at issue.
The other issue is that the drive itself could only handle up to a certain speed DVD disc:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP588
    Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
If any are near the top end, that could explain it.
Some copy-protected commercial DVDs that were recently released may have difficulty with Apple's drives.
Some non-region discs may have difficulty if you are outside of the country region the disc was made.  Apple gives you several attempts to setup regions.
If you or anyone else stuck an SD card in the CD drive by accident, it would spit out discs regardless of what kind you put in.  Good to try a commercial music CD you know worked before, or a commercial DVD you know worked before under 10.6.8.
I know for instance some Netflix DVDs won't read on my 10.9 installed iMac of the same age but will work on the 10.7 installed MacBook Pro that is newer.   And switching back to 10.6 on the same iMac doesn't make a difference.
http://www.macsales.com/ offers external drives as well as internal replacement drives worldwide.
    Bluray is not compatible.
Discs with sticky label may not work because they make the disc out of balance, and the sticky can get into the drive mechanism.
Barring anything else, it could have gotten dust accumulated.  Bring it to the genius bar of an Apple Store if still baffled.

  • Why is there now unusually high, constant disk activity on my Mac?

Firefox 9.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 is churning my HD and then must be force quit. It seems to run but there's definately something new and unusual happening here.

  • Constant disk activity; who is doing that?

    Hello there,
I pimped my G5 with two new internal drives (WD 1TB Caviar Black) and copied onto them clones of other disks and volumes (with SuperDuper), including my old system. Seems to be quite succesful operation; nearly all works as usual again.
Of course I expected mdimport to do some heavy indexing, with constant disk activity as a result.
But, after a couple of days, there is still constant disk activity: every second or so some 5,99MB is being written to disk, according to Activity Monitor.
I do not understand which app is doing this, for no one seems to be very busy at all.
    Any ideas out there?
    Appreciated,
    Marius

I just dealt with this problem effectively on my Mac Pro (Snow Leopard 10.6.4), after considerable mucking around. Hard drive noise, flashing lights, system slow-downs, all driving me nuts (admittedly, a short drive).
Turned out to be Spotlight. As it happens I have a WD Studio 1-terabyte Firewire drive that's always hooked up. I back up to it several times a day when I'm on a project, and it has clones of my application drive and three data drives, all visible on my desktop. I also have a separate Windows drive that's visible. Recently, for reasons known only to Apple, I'm sure, Spotlight began indexing and re-indexing the cloned logical drives on the WD Studio. Never stopped -- as soon as it finished, it would start again. I simply went into the Privacy tab of the Spotlight preference pane from System Preferences, made sure that all my drives appeared in the box, and then removed all four cloned drives and the Windows drive so that Spotlight would no longer index them.
Problem solved. If you have extra physical or logical drives beyond those actually in your system (as opposed to Firewire or USB drives), try removing them and re-adding them in the Privacy tab of the Spotlight preference pane. Then wait for Spotlight to re-index the drives -- could take a bit of time, and the drives will keep accessing until re-indexing is complete. If that works, you're good. If it doesn't and the process just keeps going, you might have to remove permanently the external drives and clones from the list of drives to be indexed. That's what I ended up having to do.
    Hope this helps.

  • T520 Constant disk activity

T520, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive, Win 7 Pro 64 bit,
Do any fellow T520 users see constant, about one flash per second, hard disk activity. I've turned off the usual suspects, including Windows Indexing Service and all the Intel security and management services and uninstalled Symantec Endpoint Protection 12, which has also been mentioned in certain articles about disk thrashing.
The side effects of this constant disk activity is that the computer will not enter sleep or hibernate due to inactivity, although I can force it manually.I'm also worried about premature disk wear.
Any hints would be gretly appreciated.

    HI mixz1,
I can't answer your question directly, but on my T400 running Win7 Pro 64 I also see the HDD LED flash ~ once per second.  My guess it's monitoring drive status, not actually doing reads or writes.  Even so, the machine sleeps as expected.

  • ServiceLayer.exe and constant disk activity

    Hi
I wondered what process was causing HD activity every 5 seconds on my system.
File Monitor from Sysinternals reported that the servicelayer.exe performs a series of disk operations every 5 seconds, continuously. It tries to create a directory, fails because directory exists, opens PCCSConfig.dat, does an query on the file, performs three read operations, one query, one read etc ... until after 9 information queries and 32 reads the file is closed - and after 5 seconds the whole process is repeated. A File Monitor log file is attached showing the constant disk access.
Is all that constant disk activity really necessary or is it a bug?

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

Is the store that you bought the card from nearby so that you can try going back and asking if they can activate the card properly ? If it's not, or if they can't/won't activate, then you will need to do as the message says and contact iTunes Support (these are user-to-user forums) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then iTunes Cards And Codes (you will probably need to give them images of the front and back of the card, and possibly its receipt)

  • How can I install Aperture on my new Macbook Pro. I am up to date with my Mac Pro, I have the Aperture 1 and installation disks but cant remember how I got to 3. Can anyone help?  Many thanks regards Alf

I have an up to date version of Aperture on my Mac Pro, and I would like to install it on my new Mac book Pro. I have the original installation disks for Aperture 1 and 2. I cant remember how I got to Aperture 3, I think it was via a web download but not sure. I have checked my purchases in the App Store but there is no indication of me buying an upgrade to Aperture 3.
Ive tried to download it from the App Store but it wants me to pay again.
Can anyone help on how to install Aperture 3 on my new Macbook .
    Many thanks regards  Alf

Then you can download the Trial version of Aperture 3 and unlock it with your serial numbers - you will need all three for all three versions: A current link to the Trial version is in this support document, also instructions on how to reinstall on different systems:
Aperture 3.4: May quit unexpectedly on launch after updating
    Regards

BTW: Your Aperture 3 serial number will be displayed in the "About" panel - the panel you see, when you use the command "About Aperture" from the Aperture menu in the main menu bar.

My iMac goes to disc utilities on startup, repair disk doesn't cure it and I can't reinstall Mountain Lion because I don't remember my ID and password at the time I bought the software the system isn't accepting my current details and Apple isn't recognising the answers to my security questions.  They don't even seem to have my correc date of birth so I can't progress the reinstallation.  I'm currently abroad and have my iMac with me but with no way of contacting Apple that I can find, I'm at a loss and very reluctant to pay £35 to try and get my ID and pasword sorted out given that their system recognises my current details.  can anyone help please?

when they gifted me the mountain Lion software several years ago.
Mountain Lion was introduced in July 2012. Did the people who gifted you possibly use their Apple ID for the purchase of your OS? If you used your own Apple ID, you should have simply used the one you use for all things app store. The problem with any purchase at the app store is: whatever Apple ID was used to purchase, it willl stay tied to that Apple ID forever. And, purchases from the app store are not transferable.
So, you can check with the person(s) who gifted you or spend $20 to buy it - or, if your hardware is compatible with the new OS Mavericks, you could download it and associate it with your Apple ID.
FWIW, according to the licensing agreement, the OS remains the property of Apple and you are only granted a license to run it.

  • Can anyone help me?Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to...  An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.  What is the problem?  I've made no changes.

I recently starting receiving the error message "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to... An erro occurred while copying files.  The problem may be temporary.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.  I have had no problems backing up my MacBook Pro 2011 to my Western Digital My Book Live through a Linksys EA4500 router until recently.  I've made no major changes.  I've ran a diagnosis on my back up drive with no problems.  The Time Machine back up starts, but about after about 5 to 10 minutes I get the error message.  I can see the shared drive in Finder.  The light on the drive blinks while it starts the back up.  I can see the shared folders on the networked drive.  The backup process starts but for some reason it just stops.  Can anyone help?

You can't repair a network volume in Disk Utility.
Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)
